What Your Favorite Sanders Sides Ship Says About You
Inspired by Eldena Doubleca5t's excellent series!
Prinxiety: You are a firm believer in the inherent eroticism of getting dunked on. Also, you probably watched BBC Merlin at some point.
Analogical: Your ideal relationship dynamic is two cats on opposite ends of the same couch.
Anxceit: Your addiction to edgy boys got so bad that one day you decided: [spongebob meme] What’s better than ONE edgy boy? TWO edgy boys!
Dukexiety: I’m not saying you for sure see a therapist, but I am saying with as much love as possible, that maybe you should.
Moxiety: You are touch starved. You don't want to be hugged, you want to use another human being as a weighted blanket.
Logicality: Your ideal relationship dynamic is sitcom wife x sitcom husband.
Intruality: Either "I can fix him" or "I can make him worse" depending on which side you're projecting on
Royality: Your ideal relationship dynamic is himbo x himbo, and you have so much ADHD.
Remrom: 🚨 FBI OPEN UP 🚨
Logince: How's that crush on your much more extroverted best friend going?
Intrulogical: Looking back on your childhood, you can pinpoint The Master from Doctor Who as the beginning of your crippling addiction to the most unhinged characters known to fiction.
Lociet: Half of you came here from shipping L and Light in Death Note, and half of you came here from shipping Sherlock and Moriarty in BBC Sherlock.
Dukeciet: You are a firm believer in the inherent eroticism of committing arson together.
Roceit: Your ideal relationship dynamic is just that tumblr post that's like "go fuck yourself" "fuck me yourself, coward."
Mociet: I'm not saying you for sure have daddy issues, but I am saying I would be surprised if you didn't
LAMP/DLAMP(polycule): You don’t like to make decisions.
Nicomas: And, finally, you are a firm believer in keeping things canon and keeping things wholesome. You just want good things for Thomas, and really, who wouldn't?

Real to Me (A Sanders Sides Princess and the Frog AU) Prologue
First | Next
Summary: Virgil Bast grew up in a poor neighborhood in New Orleans, learning from his family’s work ethic and never once slowing down from the day he could get a job of his own. He’s always been kept company by his best friend, Patton La Bouff, son of the richest man in New Orleans.
Prince Roman of Maldonia has always been surrounded by praise, money, and almost anything he could ever want. Prince Remus, on the other hand, has never really been what you might call the pride of Maldonia.
And the Shadow Man has only ever wanted to punish those who’ve done wrong, helped along by his Friend on the Other Side.
Relationships: Platonic moxiety, eventual prinxiety
Characters: Virgil, Patton (eventual Roman, Remus, Janus, Logan, C!Thomas)
Warnings: None for this chapter! (There will be eventual unsympathetic Janus and Remus, but they get redeemed. There will also eventually be racial prejudice, but no slurs or physical violence.)
Word count: 1644
A/N: Hi, I’d like to preface this fic by saying that I’m not black. Although I am non-white, I also don’t have the same experiences as black people do and therefore cannot do their stories justice the way that they can.
I really debated on how best to write this au, because I want to give the best representation that I possibly can, and I even considered just scrapping it. However, I was really excited about it, and in the end I wanted to provide what representation I can, because as a racial minority myself, I know that some representation (so long as it’s accurate) is better than none at all.
There are no internal monologues about being black in this story, because I don’t know how that would go. I also realize that not all black people share the same exact thoughts/opinions and since I can’t use my own personal experience with racism for this, I figured it best to leave out the internal aspects of it altogether, so that I don’t misrepresent the black community. There is, however, some racism aimed at some of the characters by others. This is something I felt like I could accurately write about, having witnessed and experienced racism myself. The racism is there, presented, and condemned, but I don’t offer much more than that. Discrimination on the basis of race and/or color is something that too many people have faced, and I felt that it was too important to leave out of the story altogether (especially considering it’s part of why Tiana struggled to get her restaurant in the movie itself).
If you made it this far, thanks for reading!! This is something I’ve worked hard on, and I really hope you enjoy it! This first chapter is going to be mostly characterization and setting up the rest of the story, but I hope you enjoy it anyway!
Without further ado, I give you Real to Me!
“Just at that moment, the ugly little frog looked up with his sad, round eyes and pleaded, ‘Oh, please, dear princess, only a kiss from you can break this terrible spell that was inflicted on me by a wicked witch!’”
Virgil felt Patton lean over to him to loudly whisper, “Here comes my favorite part!” Virgil mentally prepared himself for what he knew was coming next.
“And the beautiful princess was so moved by his desperate plea that she stooped down,” Patton was leaning in now, “picked up the slippery creature,” Virgil was leaning away, “and kissed that little frog!”
Pat gave a squeal of delight and grabbed the cat that was walking by, squeezing it so tightly its eyes seemed to pop out. All while Virgil was dramatically sticking his tongue out as far as he could.
That was one thing about his friend that Virgil would never understand. How could Patton possibly think that the story was anything but unrealistic and unsanitary? The princess could’ve contracted some disease! Or maybe the frog was lying and he wasn’t even a prince?! Who came up with those stories?? He needed to have a talk with them.
“...and they lived happily ever after!”
He heard Patton sigh with delight before looking at Virgil’s mama with pleading eyes. “Will you read it again Mrs. Bast?”
“Sorry, honey, we’d better be heading home,” she said with a kind smile. “Say goodbye Virgil.”
“There is no way I’d ever ever EVER kiss a frog. Yuck,” Virgil ranted as he gathered his things from around the room.
“Even if he turned into a prince after?” Patton asked.
Virgil nodded hard. “Especially if he turned into a prince. Princes are just rich boys who do nothing all day but ride on their horses and dance with pretty ladies. I’d have to do all his work for him!”
“Nuh-uh!! Princes are brave, and polite, and after you’re married, they only dance with you!” Pat defended.
“You don’t kn-!”
“Evening Eudora!” Patton’s daddy called as he turned into the room.
“Daddy! Daddy!” Pat jumped up and down excitedly. “Look at my new dress!!” He twirled around to show off the fluffy, sky blue gown Eudora had sewn for him.
“Why, I’d expect nothing less from the finest seamstress in New Orleans!”
“Well thanks, Mr. La Bouff,” Eudora Bast replied. “Sorry to leave so soon after seeing ya, but we’d best be heading out now.”
Virgil vaguely heard Mr. La Bouff give his well-wishes to his mama as Pat was walking over to say, “What if the prince wasn’t lazy and boring? Would you marry him then?”
“I’d only marry him if he wasn’t just some prince in a book,” Virgil stated matter-of-factly. “He has to be a real person that I can talk to.”
“Well duh, silly! You can’t marry a book!” the blond boy laughed.
“Virgil! It’s time to go home baby, your daddy should be home by now,” Eudora called to him.
He ran over to where his mama was standing in the wide, elegant doorway and shouted, “Bye Patton!”
“Bye Virge!!”
~
Virgil always liked the ride home. He could watch the other people on the tram, and wonder what they’re like, and stare out the window at the fuzzy streetlights in the distance. Plus he got to lean his head on his mama’s shoulder and feel the tram rock side to side. It made him feel safe.
When they got near their neighborhood, Eudora whispered, “Go ahead and pull the cord.”
Virgil waved goodbye to the driver as he hopped off the tram and onto the sidewalk. He looked up at his mama as they walked down the street. “Why does Pat wanna marry a prince so bad? He’s already a prince, pretty much.”
“I don’t know sweetheart.” The lights made his mama’s face look so warm. “Maybe he wants to make it official. You could ask him sometime.”
“No,” Virgil said thoughtfully, “I think I’ll just help him find his prince. Oh! That can be his birthday present this year!!”
Eudora laughed lightly and smiled down at him. “I think that’s a great idea, hon.”
Voices rang out from houses along the streets, and Virgil could see families laughing together through some of the glowing windows. The two of them stepped up to the old, brown house and the door that creaks when you open it. As soon as he stepped inside, Virgil smelled the most amazing gumbo in the world, the kind only his daddy could make. He could almost taste it in the air. That, in combination with the yellow light coming from the kitchen and his daddy’s heavy, brown coat draped over the living room chair made Virgil feel like there was a fire in his chest, the kind that you have at Christmas.
“Daddy! We’re home!!”
Mr. Bast looked over his shoulder at the two coming inside, and smiled big. “Hey, Virge! I’m almost done chopping veggies, you wanna help me finish?”
“Yeah!! Can I taste it?” the boy asked as he dragged a chair over to the old stove.
“I’d be hurt if you didn’t,” James joked, helping him up. “How ‘bout you put these peppers in?”
After they’d let the ingredients stew in the pot for a while, Virgil put the wooden spoon to his mouth and his daddy asked, “How’s it taste?”
“Hmm…” Virgil tapped his chin a bit before quickly sliding to the floor, running over to the cupboard, and grabbing a bottle of tabasco. He dashed back over to the pot and shook in some of the sauce. “There! Try it!” The curly-haired boy handed the spoon over to his dad. He laughed as his daddy made a big show of tasting it.
“Mmm, now that has to be the best gumbo I ever tasted!” James grabbed Virgil under the arms and swung him to the ground. “Why don’t you go with your mama to call the neighborhood over? I’ll grab the pot.”
Virgil slid out of his daddy’s arms and nodded before running to the door. He flung it open and shouted as loud as he could, “Hey, everybody! I made gumbo!!” His mama reached where he was standing on the porch and stood behind him proudly, while the neighbors greeted him with “Woo! That smells good!” and he replied with “I made it almost all by myself! My daddy helped a little though.” Mr. Bast spooned out some gumbo into everyone’s bowls, and one by one they picked up their spoons.
It was quiet for a little, the kind that happens when your family’s sat around the table and it’s been a long day, but now you get to eat something and it barely even matters what it is because you’re all eating it in the same place at the same time. Then, though, people start saying things like “Mm-mm-mmm!!” and “this is fantastic Virgil, you must’ve gotten your daddy’s talent.” He could barely stop smiling long enough to chew. (His mama didn’t say anything about chewing with his mouth closed.) (This time.)
~
That night, when Virgil snuggled under his covers, he was smiling. He felt his mama sitting down on the bed by his feet. James was standing right next to her.
“You know the thing about good food?” Virgil looked up at his daddy. “It brings folks together from all walks of life. It warms them right up and it puts little smiles on their faces.” He tapped Virgil’s cheeks when he said it. James pulled a piece of paper out of his shirt pocket and showed it to Virgil, a drawing of a beautiful golden room with fancy tables and soaring ceilings. There were lots of people in the picture, musicians and waiters and diners with nice clothes and big feathers. “When I open up my restaurant, I tell you, people are going to line up for miles around just to get a taste of my food.”
Virgil sat up at that. “Our food.”
“That’s right, baby. Our food,” his daddy laughed and handed him the picture. The boy held it gently in his hands, like it was the most precious thing in the world.
Suddenly, Virgil got up and said, “Oh, look!” He stared out the window.
“What is it, hon?” Eudora craned her head to see what he was looking at.
“Patton’s fairy tale book said if you wish on a star, it’s sure to come true!”
James smiled at him and said gently, “Well, you wish on that star. You dream with all your heart. But remember, Virge, that star can only take you part of the way.” Virgil looked away from the star and back at his daddy. “You’ve got to help it along with some hard work of your own, and then, yeah, you can do anything you set your mind to. Just promise me one thing.” Virgil held his eyes. “That you’ll never, ever lose sight of what’s really important. Okay?” He nodded hard, twice, just to be sure his daddy knew he was serious.
His mama reached over to rub the tight black curls on his head. “See you in the morning, baby.”
“Get some sleep,” James told him.
“G’night,” Virgil whispered as he snuggled deeper into bed.
When the door closed, he hopped up again and went to the window. He could still find the star he had been looking at earlier — it was the brightest, and almost in the very middle of the sky. Almost like it was standing on a stage, waiting to be seen. Virgil closed his eyes and held the drawing to his chest. “I wish, I wish, I wish…”
Rrrrrribbit.
Virgil slowly turned to see the frog on the windowsill.
If he screamed, it was nobody’s business. (His mama and daddy were lucky enough to enjoy his company that night.)
~
A/N: Ok so I realize that it’s a lot of just quoting the movie, but I liked the way they set it up so I figured why fix it if it’s not broken right? But from here on, the characters deviate more from those of the movie, so the dialogue will be a whole lot more of my own :) it’ll be a lot more interesting next chapter, I promise. (And Virgil will be grown next time.)

You must be he I was seeking
Summary: Roman and Logan have been best friends as long as they can remember, but will it stay that way?
or
Roman and Logan are huge idiots.
Pairings: Logince, backround (but still a lot of) moxiety and dukeceit.
Warnings: mentions of bullying, friends fighting, there is quite a lot of angst but with happy ending :)
word count: 5690
a/n: Hello everyone, it’s been quite a while since I posted any fic, I am quite proud of this one so I hope yall enjoy it. I originally wrote this for @sanderssantas fic exange for the lovely @therealmoshar! (go check them out!!). I have always wanted to write enemies to lovers and a soulmate au so I absolutely loved writing this.
The title comes from “To A Stranger” by Walt Withman.
you can also find it on ao3 here: https://archiveofourown.org/works/21804592
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Roman was practically bouncing in his seat at lunch, or more than usual anyway. It seemed today he was surpassing even his sibling in hyperactivity. His mom smiled softly at him.
“You’re going to Logan’s later?” She said knowingly.
Upon hearing his best friends name Roman’s face lit up.
“Yeah I’m gonna, “ he said between haphazard bites of his sandwich “Imma pick him up from his house, after lunch!”
Remus rolled their eyes next to him.
“It’s tragic to be the only one with manners here,” they said.
It is to be noted that they said this while practically covering the entire table and themselves in peanut butter and jelly.
Roman playfully shoved them after he finished his food.
“Shut up, Ree,” he said.
To which Remus responded by sticking their tongue out, before going back to their food. Then Roman looked at his mom with his best pleading puppy dog eyes.
Carmen laughed at her children fondly, shaking her head.
“Fine,” she said “You are excused, Roman.”
The moment she said it, he bolted from the table to put on his shoes.
“Be back at seven!” she shouted at him.
He ran back into the room, gave her a quick kiss on the cheek and raid rushed:
“Will do, thank you, bye!”
“Love you!” she called out in the general direction of the hallway.
She heard a very loud “Me too!” and a slam of the door.
She couldn’t help but laugh. He reminded her so much of when she had been young and met her soulmate; she and Isa couldn’t get enough of each other either. Absentmindedly she touched her arm where a garden of flowers is tattooed on her skin and she smiled.
Then she turned back to the table.
“Remus! Do not feed peanut butter to the cat!”
--------------
Roman knocked excitedly at Logan’s door.
They were going to go to their secret clearing in the neighborhood park. Well “secret”, technically anyone could come there, but there were never any people there.
It was a small clearing with a bench and overgrown plants all around. Roman insisted that the place had to be magical, Logan on the other hand said it was simply forgotten due to poor municipal planning.
Whoever was right didn’t really matter in the end, it was their favorite place to be.
Logan’s dad opened the door, he always looked very similar to Logan, with his dark skin and black curly hair, although Logan’s was shorter. The biggest noticeable difference was his tattoo on his neck that consisted of various little birds, the very same that his mother had.
Anyway, Logan’s dad smiled at him and said:
“Logan’s upstairs, you know the way.”
“Thanks Mr. Sanders!” Roman said, and ran up the stairs.
He practically stormed into Logan’s room.
Logan looked up from Foundation and Empire, annoyed, until he realised who had just charged into his room.
“Roman!” he said, a little too enthusiastically considering they had seen each other yesterday.
“Yeah, now come on Lo! We gotta go to the park!” he said grabbing his friend’s hand and pulling him downstairs.
Logan shook his head at his impatient friend, but did not stop him.
“You do know we still have about six hours of playtime, right?”
“Yeah yeah but the dragon witch is not going to defeat herself!”
Logan could not really argue with that.
He quickly put on his shoes and could only say a quick goodbye to his dad before Roman grabbed his hand and took off towards the park.
-----------------
They played happily for hours, occasionally Logan would point out inconsistencies in Roman’s stories which he always answered with a variation of:
“It’s magic, Specs!” or “we are playing pretend, calculator watch”.
Roman liked nicknames.
And Logan would give in and follow Roman’s nonsensical plot. Logan always liked Roman’s stories a lot, secretly.
They played until the sun started setting, then tired out and content they sat on their bench, surely late for curfew and not bothered by it whatsoever.
Logan rested his head on Roman’s lap, to be able to properly point at the stars and show them all to Roman.
And although Roman couldn’t really remember all that he was told he always listened carefully, slowly threading his fingers through his friend’s hair, smiling at Logan’s beaming face.
It was time to go home and a comfortable silence fell over them.
Roman sighed content and said.
“We will always be together, won’t we Lo?”
Logan sat up and looked at his friend.
“Always is a very long time, Ro.”
“You think we won’t?”
“That’s not what I said.”
Roman laughed
“It's almost as if you like me, nerd.”
Logan tried to give him an annoyed look, which ended up looking more along the lines of “desperately fond”.
“For the record,” Logan said. “We will be together forever.”
Barely above a whisper but with the conviction one could only have when speaking an absolute truth.
It was strong wording, but such are the things you say when you have yet to turn nine and the world seems simple.
And they believed it, with all of their hearts, they really did.
-----------------
Then middle school rolled around, and everything went wrong. And as far as Roman is concerned, it was all Logan’s fault.
A few months after they started middle school Logan already seemed to change so much. He was quiet and reserved, which is something he had always been, but never around Roman. He was also always seemingly busy.
Roman didn’t know about how kids made fun of Logan in class, how slowly but surely Logan began to believe his only redeemable quality was his grades.
It’s not like Logan told him.
What made it harder is that they weren’t in the same class anymore, so they only saw each other after school.
More and more often Logan would be studying, or taking extra classes, which he didn’t even need in Roman’s opinion.
Roman got increasingly sadder, and quietly wondered what happened to his best friend.
As far as Logan was concerned it was all Roman’s fault, because he had replaced him.
One day Logan arrived at Roman’s house, unannounced, sure, but they did that all the time.
Or they had done that once.
Remus opened the door and seemed genuinely surprised to see him.
“Logan…” they said, pitifully?
“Hello, is Roman home?”
“Yes, but,” they hesitated “he has a friend over.”
Logan’s brain short circuited, a friend? Of course Roman could have other friends, many people at school liked him. He was allowed to have other people over that weren’t him.
It still didn’t sit right with him.
He walked up the familiar staircase to Roman’s door, which was easy to find because it said “Roman” in cursive red and gold and covered in stickers.
He heard Roman’s loud laughter mixed with someone else's.
He opened the door to find Patton Jones in Logan’s usual spot, next to Roman on his bed laughing at a joke only the two of them understand.
The two on the bed stopped abruptly when they saw Logan at the door.
“Logan!” Roman said excitedly, because they hadn’t seen each other in more than a week.
“It’s good that you are here,” he continued.”Now you can meet Patton!”
Patton smiled in a way that seemed to light up his freckled clad face, he seemed lovely with his sunny smile and golden curls, Logan felt something akin to anger bubbling in his chest, he immediately did not like Patton.
“You must be Logan,” Patton said happily “Roman talks about you a lot.”
Logan completely missed Roman blushing, and instead realised that the feeling bubbling up in his chest was something as stupid as jealousy.
“I can come by another time.” he said.
“No, no its going to be fun!”
The rest of the evening was awkward. Roman and Patton had jokes and stories Logan didn’t know. Logan couldn’t shake the horrible feeling in his stomach.
Logan left before dinner in a hurry.
Roman was extremely confused, why couldn’t Logan even be just nice to Patton.
Patton was sweet and if Logan didn’t appreciate that, Patton was Roman’s friend.
“I am sorry Pat, I have no idea what’s up with him.”
“I think he might just be jealous, Ro.” Patton said softly.
But Logan was not an idiot, there was no reason to be jealous, Roman was sure Logan knew that. But of course he didn’t tell him that.
“No, I think he is just being a jerk.”
Patton shook his head sadly, he didn’t like it when people were hurting.
----------------------
Roman and Logan saw each other less and less through middle school.
They didn’t talk about the things that bothered them or anything really, and soon painful silence fell over them when they hung out.
Things didn’t completely get ruined until about a week before summer vacation.
“My parents agreed for you to come along with our vacation.” Logan said, pretending very hard that everything was fine.
They had always gone on vacation together, he saw no reason for it to be different this year.
Roman shifted uncomfortably.
“Still the week of the 11th?”
Logan eyed him dubiously.
“Yes? It’s always been that week?”
Roman looked at the ground guiltily.
Logan stared at him baffled.
“You forgot?!” Logan said, way too loud, his fists clenched, his body tensed up.
“I am so so sorry Logan! I am going camping with Pat that week but maybe-”
Logan saw red.
Of course he thought what did I expect?
“Fine! Go hang out with Patton then!” he yelled, trying very hard not to cry.
Roman threw up his hands.
“I don’t know why you hate Patton so much!”
“I don’t! I just-”
“You do.”
Logan clenched his jaw so hard he wondered whether he could break his teeth like that.
Roman looked at him with a challenge.
“This is preposterous Roman, we are not toddlers anymore.”
“So you admit you dislike Patton.”
Logan slowly breathed in and out.
“I do not.”
Roman shook his head.
“Oh yeah? You merely hate when I hang out with him? God forbid I want to have a friend that doesn’t ditch me because he is a such a fucking nerd!”
Roman regretted the words the moment they left his mouth and saw Logan flinch.
Logan looked back at him as if he had just been slapped.
Kids at school said those things, but Roman, Roman wouldn’t.
Yet he had.
Logan felt tears prickle in his eyes.
“Logan...“ Roman said softly.
“I hate you!” Logan shouted, before storming off.
Roman did not run towards him, nor did he try to reason with him.
He just shouted “Fine!”
And ran back home choking back tears.
-------------------
3 years later.
Pretty much everyone at Gainesville High School knew Roman Reyes and Logan Sanders.
Roman Reyes was known as a semi-popular theatre kid, that many people knew either because he constantly got the lead role in the school’s play or because he was signed up to at least 10 different extracurricular clubs and activities. Most people liked him well enough, although he usually sat at lunch only with Patton Jones and occasionally his twin.
Whom was another reason he was known across the school, people tend to remember you if your sibling blew up the lab, on multiple occasions.
Logan Sanders was a genius, who had won more science contests than anyone else at the school ever. Everyone also liked him well enough, or at least they said so ever since he started hanging out with Deceit - who did have a real name, supposedly, but made up a new one every time someone asked him - and Virgil Decker. Who were both rather punk/emo and would not hesitate to fuck you up if you messed with their friends. They had a very interesting brand of psychological warfare they had used on Chad Carson when he had spray painted Logan’s locker in freshman year, no one had dared to mess with him since.
Anyway, they had many things in common, Logan and Roman.
They both had a tendency of arguing with teachers, they both had interesting brands of extra, they both liked to wear skirts occasionally.
And mostly everyone knew them because they knew that letting those two in a room together was about as catastrophic as letting an atomic bomb go off.
Some of their arguments and fights were famous.
Like the time they argued for two periods about the correct interpretation of a single line in Hamlet , derailing poor Ms. Chase’s math class.
Or the time Roman joined the debate team loudly announcing to anyone who would listen that he was doing it to kick Logan’s butt. In retribution Logan had auditioned for the role Roman wanted in the school play. They now shared the role, much to the demise of the whole theatre cast and crew and director Thomas Sanders.
Or the time they were doing their standard comparing grades and bickering shenanigans which escalated in Roman pouring water over Logan, which in turn got Roman covered in an unholy mix of coffee and red bull.
Everyone tried to separate them as much as possible, but it seemed somehow those two always ended up stuck together.
----------------
Patton sighed as Roman shouted yet another stupid nickname at Logan, who was sitting all the way across the cafeteria. Logan shouted back a “burn” that sounded suspiciously like a rap verse.
Patton gave a sympathetic smile and wave at Virgil who seemed to be faking slamming his head onto the table in frustration.
Virgil saw him and blushed timidly and waved back, which in turn made Patton blush.
He looked down at his arm looking at his forming soulmark. He had made friendship bracelets is whole life, he was in fact looping one now. A green one, Remus had bitten through their old one. Now he had the simple design of one on his right wrist, a blue one with a little purple heart in the middle. He really, really hoped Virgil had the same tattoo.
Roman didn’t notice his very obvious crush and instead started ranting about Logan, again.
Patton tuned him off as much as he could.
“You two are like Harry and Draco.” Patton cut him off, hoping Harry Potter might make him stop.
Roman scoffed.
“I hope you mean that he is Draco.”
“You have been talking about him for the past ten minutes!” Patton countered.
“First of all clearly I am a Gryffindor, second of all he is just so-”
“Infuriating!” Logan said to Dee and Virgil who were totally paying attention and hadn’t heard this all before.
“Oh,” Dee said, rolling his eyes “you hadn’t mentioned it.”
“I haven’t? Well in that case-”
They were saved by an impromptu lecture on everything infuriating Roman had ever said and done by Remus, who slammed their lunch on the table. They proceeded to crawl on Dee’s lap casually. Virgil muttered “get a room” which earned him a middle finger from Remus.
“Can’t you shut up about my brother for one second Lolo,” they said “there are more subjects, you know.”
Logan did not give in.
“Doesn’t your brother regard you as a traitor?”
“For sitting with my soulmate?” Remus rolled their eyes “You are so dramatic, nerdy wolverine, besides Roman may be a pain in the ass, but he is also a romantic.”
Logan wrinkled his nose looking at Deceit and Remus’s intertwined arms. In full display was a currently simple, but surely one day extremely extra green and yellow serpent tattoo that coiled around both of their arms, making it hard to make out where each of them ended or started.
They were ridiculous. And so was his mark, it was not visible but it was a simple and way too cartoonish bunch of stars under his left shoulder blade.
Soulmates where stupid, in Logan’s opinion.
“It’s not like any of you like Roman, I am in my right to find him aggravating and-” he saw all of his friends looking at him incredulously. “What?”
He distinctly heard Dee mutter: “Lord grant me patience, because if you grant me strength someone will get murdered.”
“Well, I mean Princey isn’t my best friend but,” Virgil shrugged “ I like him well enough, plus his antics in debate club are always entertaining.”
Logan looked at Virgil disbelieving, then at Dee who smirked a bit.
“He certainly is dramatic and annoying, I’ll give you that but then again,” he gestured vaguely at his company on the table “a lot of people are.”
Vrigil rolled his eyes, Remus simply nodded in agreement.
Logan scoffed.
Since when does Deceit hang out with Roman anyway, well aside from play rehearsal and the fact that he is his soulmates brother and- , Logan thought, realised he was being stupid and shook his head.
“I have seen you hit Roman with a morning star, Remus, you can not tell me you enjoy his company.”
“It was play rehearsal!” Remus defended “and we are siblings, it’s different.”
“I can’t fathom any of you enjoy his company he-”
“Well don’t be like that, you two used to be best friends.” Remus said nonchalantly.
Virgil stared at Logan baffled, Dee burst into laughter.
“I am not joking!” Remus said amused.
Dee shook his head.
“I know, darling, but it's not like we have had to endure daily rants on how dreadful Roman is, and it turns out they were fucking best friends!”
Virgil just kept staring at Logan quizzically.
“Yes, Roman and I were,” he hesitated not sure how to phrase it “..close, but we were children, it was quite some time ago.”
“What happened?”
Logan looked briefly across the cafeteria to Roman’s table, where Patton was tying a friendship bracelet to Roman’s wrist.
“He found new friends.”
-----------------
Logan hadn’t quite realised how much he missed Roman, but now that he had been lying wide awake for quite some time, memories of both of them unable to get out of his head, he supposes it’s a lot more than he initially thought.
He really does like his current friends, but somehow Roman had been different, they had been so very close and Logan had believed they would be together forever.
There was still a picture somewhere buried under books on his desk he couldn’t bring himself to throw away.
It was a nice spring day, they had their arms around each other, they were both smiling so wide it seemed impossible, they were probably around ten years old, childhood innocence still in their eyes. And Roman was looking at him like he hung the moon and the stars in the sky.
Where had that look gone? What had happened?
Logan’s chest ached with nostalgia,and although he had previously never ever considered sneaking out, on this night with a full moon and thousands of stars he quietly slips into his coat and shoes.
He opens the front door silently and he walks calmly to the clearing in the park.
Their park.
He gets there and goes to sit on the bench.
Their bench.
He looks up at the sky, he looks at the stars that he once considered theirs.
A deep melancholy settles into his chest threatening to blow him into pieces.
Tears prickle in his eyes for times long gone.
He is snapped out of his thoughts by a soft, surprised, achingly familiar voice.
“Logan?” his best friend, his rival, a stranger says.
-----------------
Patton had never been mad at Roman before. Sure Roman could be a bit much, Patton had been frustrated, annoyed, aggravated, perhaps a tad angry.
But today it seemed he had finally crossed a line with him. Roman was, as usual, ranting about Logan.
Patton had sighed heavily.
“Now you are just being mean, Roman, I know you miss him but-”
And ok, Roman may have exploded a little, stating that he was better off without Logan in about ten different ways.
Patton had huffed and said in a tone Roman had never heard from him before: “Fine, see you tomorrow.” and he walked away.
And now in the middle of the night Roman couldn’t shake Patton's words out of his head. Mostly because he had been right.
He did miss Logan.
He looked at the little stars, just under his shoulder blade in the mirror. They always reminded him of Logan, and his ceiling full of glow in the dark stars. Too bad Logan hated his guts.
He put his shirt back on and looked through the window, out to the full moon and the stars.
He made his way downstairs careful not to wake up his moms’. Downstairs he bumped into Remus who snickered at him.
“Sneaking out little brother, I always figured you were too much of a goody-two-shoes for that.”
Roman eyed his sibling dubiously, they were wearing a neon green skirt with suspenders over a black crop-top, knee length boots, and those weird long fingerless gloves.
Roman wondered how they could possibly be related.
“First of all, what are you wearing? Second you are also sneaking out and third we are twins! And i was born first!”
Remus laughed and grabbed a rat out of their skirt pocket.
“Can you believe how easy it is to rile him up, Woody?” they said to the rat. “Isn't he ridiculous?”
“You are sneaking out with your rats?”
Remus carefully stuffed the rat back in their pocket and said: “Dee is having a party!”
As if this was an explanation for the rats. Also Roman knew very well Deceits “parties” consisted of either vandalising public property with anarchist messages or some other sort of public disturbance.
Roman shook his head and walked towards the door.
“Don’t get arrested, I won’t bail you out this time.” he called over his shoulder.
“I make no promises.” they said before disappearing through the kitchen window, for some reason.
Outside he wondered whether Logan joined them in their mischief these days.
Logan seemed like a rational individual, but slap a decent hypothesis to any shenanigans and he will call it an “experiment” and go along gleefully.
Or he used to anyway.
He walked towards the park remembering all the trouble they had gotten into, chuckling sadly at his memories.
He made it to the clearing as if last time had been yesterday, and not years ago.
There to his surprise was Logan Sanders, looking up to the sky and...crying?
“Logan?” he asked, unsure of whether or not he was dreaming.
Logan looked at him, a little bit shocked, but mostly he looked tired.
They stood still for a moment staring at each other tension everywhere.
Finally it was broken by a small, exhausted voice.
“I am tired of fighting, Roman.”
He looked so sad, so small, Roman wanted nothing more than to gather him in his arms.
He didn’t, instead he sat next to him.
“I think I am too.”
Silence fell over them again.
“Then pray tell,” Logan said. “What are we doing?”
Roman looked down at his hands.
“I don’t know,” he shook his head. “You promised you know.” Roman said bitterly. “Forever.”
Logan looked back at him, anger clearly bubbling right back into his stomach.
“Maybe we would’ve if you hadn’t replaced me!” he spat with venom in his voice.
Roman’s eyes widened in surprise he turned to Logan baffled.
“What?” Roman asked.
“Well it was clear you favored Patton, which I suppose should be fine, but-”
“Hold up! Time out!” Roman said shaking his hands. “You were jealous? You thought I liked Patton better?”
Now Logan looked equally baffled.
“I- yes?” he said.
Roman burst out laughing. Logan really didn’t get the joke.
“What?” he demanded.
“I thought you didn’t like me anymore! I mean we never hung out anymore and you seemed so distant.” he gripped Logan’s hands firmly into his own. “I love Patton don’t get me wrong, but I started hanging it with him because I was so lonely,” he looked into Logan’s eyes “without you.”
“You were?” Logan said his voice so small.
Thus Roman realised he was an idiot, a petty, stubborn, stupid moron .
“Yeah, I was.” he sighed sadly. “I am sorry, for what I said then and well for everything.”
Logan shook his head.
“It was so long ago.”
“I should never have said that.”
Logan smiled just a little bit.
“I apologize too, for everything.”
Roman smiled back.
“Man, I thought you were being a jerk to Patton for no reason.”
Now it was Logan’s turn to laugh, a little bitterly and with bitten back tears.
“Patton seemed so perfect, and with everything people were saying at school,” he looked away from Roman. “I did not think there was a way I could compete with him.”
Roman did hug him then, clutching to the back of his shirt, pressing Logan close and said:
“No one could ever compete with you, Specs.”
Logan’s heart soared, he hugged back and clung to Roman like a life raft, he let out a shaky laugh, a breath of relief and said very quietly but full of conviction:
“No one could ever compete with you either.”
They stayed in the park way too long, remembering old times, making plans for times ahead. Perhaps it should’ve been awkward, but somehow it wasn’t, they fit like two pieces of a puzzle, just like they always had.
They had years to catch up on, but soon they realised that their lives were still intertwined, their friendship group was pretty much the same and they shared extracurricular activities. They had never really been separated at all.
They did still bicker, but they didn’t fight and their words lacked bite or venom.
So they ended up pressed against each other, looking up at the stars. Logan’s head rested on Roman’s shoulder.
“Look it’s Cassiopeia.” Roman said, pointing at the constellation.
Logan couldn't quite bring himself to be embarrassed about the way he giggled.
“I thought I was supposed to be the astronomy guy.” he said.
Roman smiled into his hair.
“I did listen, you know, when you talked about the stars.”
Logan looked up at the stars and held Roman closer, he remembered, now how it had been so easy to promise him forever.
------------
The next day at Gainesville high school everyone was fairly sure the apocalypse had just started, because Roman Reyes and Logan Sanders had eaten lunch together, with all of their friends, who all seemed delighted and not at all bothered by it. And not just that they had, supposedly also sat together in all classes they could.
“You are kidding me, babe.” said Remy Katz taking a sip from his starbucks iced coffee.
“I swear I am not!” said a very baffled Emile Picani, “I saw them at lunch!”
“You sure they weren’t try to poison each others food? Secretly murdering each other through pure passive aggressiveness?”
Emile recalled how he had seen them, their smiles blinding, looking at each other as if they hung the moon and the stars in the sky.
“Yes, I am sure,” he said smiling “They seemed happy.”
-----------
Logan and Roman’s friends had varied reactions to finding their years long rivalry had ended with a good conversation and some hugs.
Patton was so utterly delighted he hadn’t been able to be mad at anyone, especially after Logan’s very sincere apology, the gist of which was “I was a jealous thirteen year old, and I am sorry.”
Patton had hugged Logan very tightly and handed him a blue bracelet with a little star in the middle.
Logan smiled surprised.
“How did you know I liked astrology?”
Patton smirked and said: “Roman talked about you, a lot.”
Roman turned cherry red and sputtered some nonsensical words.
And of course all his friends were kind enough to laugh at his expense, really loudly.
After that Virgil offered his reaction which had been something akin of “Fucking finally.”
To which Patton said: “Language, babe.”
And Roman got his revenge by laughing very loudly at Virgil's very red face.
Which was not much of a revenge at all because Patton felt so very sorry that they were laughing at his poor boyfriend and so kissed him quite sweetly.
To which Remus shouted: “get a room!” which they shouted while sitting on Dee’s lap with their legs coiled around each other.
Dee had then shook his head, looked Roman up and down and said: “I suppose we can add another moron to our group.” A statement that no one argued.
Everyone ate happily together, bickering loudly and laughing a tad too loud.
Patton and Virgil tentatively held hands under the table; their bracelet tattoos giving an illusion of hands bound together, content and forever.
Deceit and Remus ate, as always, half on each others laps, their arms twisted together to show the serpent seemingly pressing them together.
As for Roman and Logan? Well I hope it is established by now that they are clueless morons.
Yes, they were friends again, and everyone pretty much assumed they had figured out they were soulmates as well.
But
It took them a week more.
It all happened over lunch at Roman’s house, Roman was eating, or well he was shoving food in his mouth as rushed as possible.
His moms shared a knowing look.
“Are you going to Logan’s later?” Carmen aksed.
Roman’s face lit up and made something of a sound of agreement.
“After lunch!”
Everyone at the table couldn’t help but smile at his besotted face, even Remus.
“Well I am glad I don't have to hear your rants about not having a soulmate anymore, they were getting exhausting.” They said brightly.
Roman practically dropped his fork in shock, eyes wide he turned to his sibling.
“What?” Roman said, trying to process the sentence.
“Wait, you seriously hadn’t figured it out yet?” Remus said dumbfounded.
And when Roman, still shocked, shook his head, Remus burst into laughter joined by their moms’ not so subtle chuckling.
Roman on the other hand was freaking out.
“Oh my Gods! Logan is my soulmate?! Oh my- I- What?!” Roman sputtered.
Which just made Remus laugh harder.
“How do you know?” Roman continued “When did you see Logan shirtless? Wait! Do I want to know?”
Remus waved their hand dismissively.
“I got sulfuric acid on his shirt, doesn’t matter, long story, but like...you really didn’t know?!”
Roman felt like his world had been shaken upside down.
He had to-
“GO! I have to go!”
Carmen, who was still laughing said: “you are excused, Roman.”
As soon as she said that Roman bolted out of the door, nearly forgetting his shoes.
----------------
Roman knocked on Logan’s door excitedly. Logan’s dad opened the door and smiled down at him.
“It’s good to see you again Roman!”
Roman nodded politely, still practically vibrating from emotion.
Logan’s dad seemed to notice, laughed and said:
“Logan’s upstairs, you know the way.”
“Thanks Mr. Sanders.” Roman said as he dashed up the stairs.
Upstairs he actually barged into Logan’s room.
Logan looked up from his book and did not even try to hide his glee as he said:
“Roman! You are early.”
He also did not hide his surprise and subsequent rush of warmth to his face when Roman blurted out: “Take off your shirt!”
“I- wh- what?” he stammered.
Roman laughed, still bouncing.
“Ok, ok,” he said. “I could’ve frased that one better, wait let me just-”
Then Roman started taking his shirt off, oh Goodness Gracious-
“Roman what in the world are you-”
Then Roman turned around.
And Logan’s heart either stopped or started beating so fast he couldn’t properly feel it anymore. Because there, covering Roman’s right shoulder blade was a perfectly glitterly, stupidly cartoonish little galaxy.
“We are soulmates.” he stated.
And then again, and again and again getting steadily more excited as he went.
Roman looked on at his shiny face and wondered if it was possible to die of fondness and cuteness overload.
“Yeah, L.” Roman said, giggly and breathless. “We are.”
Logan came closer, laughing now, joy clear on his face.
“Oh,” he said shaking his head. “We are such idiots.”
“Oh yeah we are.”
Logan came to his senses only for a second to realise that Roman was still shirtless.
He coughed pointedly, Roman smirked.
“I don’t know, pocket protector, don’t like what you see?”
Logan swatted him lightly and gave him a fake scandalised look
“Put a shirt on, Roman.”
Roman pouted but obliged and put on his shirt, making a whole show of turning around and putting on his shirt as slowly as possible.
He turned around.
“So-” he started and never finished, because Logan grabbed him by the front of his shirt and kissed him.
Roman made a sound at the back of his throat between “delighted” and “please God more”. And he kissed back, practically making them both fall on Logan’s bed.
Their kiss, they both agreed, had to be magical, they were soaring flying and pulling each other closer and closer, practically melting against each other. They giggled and laughed and whispered sweet nothings that meant the world and nothing at all.
They ended up pulling apart only for the insufferable need for air.
They sat up on Logan’s bed,panting, pressed against each other, looking up at Logan’s glow in the dark stars in pleasant silence.
Roman gently brushed the hair out of his soulmates face and said softly:
“We will always be together, won’t we love?”
Logan smiled and leaned into his touch.
“Always is a long time, beloved.”
Roman tenderly brushed his cheek.
“You think we won’t be?”
Logan closed his eyes, smiling contendly.
“That’s not what I said.”
God, I love him so much. They both thought.
“Gosh, it’s almost as if you like me, nerd.”
They both giggled.
Then Logan pulled Roman even closer and whispered into Roman’s ear, very faintly, but with the conviction one could only have when speaking an absolute truth.
“I know we will be together forever.”
And they believed it, with all of their hearts, they did.

Hey, romance for once.
Most of my stuff is just platonic but there’s this idea I’ve had for a while now.
I was suddenly reminded of it while listening to this song My Eyes Adored You.
So, the basic idea is that Patton and Virgil become friends, basically, from birth cus they’re parents are friends with each other.
They’re extremely close and stay that way for years.
It even reaches the point that Patton, upon finding out what marriage is, says that they should get married when they’re older.
And Virgil agrees and they promise that they’ll get married one day.
But then, Virgil’s mom dies.
And the only family he has that’s willing to take him in is his uncle and cousin who both live all the way in Alaska.(Patton and Virgil live in florida at the start of this.)
So Virgil has to move super far away and they don’t really have a good way of communicating because, for plot reasons, the town in Alaska he’ll have to move to doesn’t have any sort of easy communication system past the occasional satellite phone call and letters.
So they’re going to end up being separated completely.
And they’re both distraught and terrified of losing each other completely.
So Virgil makes a promise that he would come back and be with Patton again.
That he wouldn’t leave his side again once he did.
And that they would still get married one day.
That, when he returned, he’d propose and they would get married and move into a house together and stay together for the rest of their days.
And Patton accepts the promise and promises that he’ll wait for him.
And then Virgil moves away and they both enter middle school alone, sending letters to each other whenever they can, but otherwise remaining isolated from each other.
Years pass by and Patton gets a couple of good friends at his school that stay with him all the way thru college.
Roman and Logan adore Patton and try their best to be good friends to him.
And Patton eventually ends up telling them about Virgil.
And they both are instantly uncertain about the situation.
Especially as time goes on.
Because Patton refuses to try anything remotely romantic with anyone else.
Even when people ask him out or when he’s given opportunities to be with people he genuinely likes, he never feels any sort of romantic atraction to them and ends up rejecting them.
And Roman hates it because he both wants his friend to find happiness with a good person that cares for him and he wants to set Patton up and celebrate his friend’s romance.
And Logan is bothered by it because he doesn’t think Patton will ever actually reunite with Virgil.
He assumes that Virgil probably has no intention of returning and keeping his promises to Patton.
He also believes that following this promise, despite not seeing each other in person for years and making it when they were children, is an unrealistic thing to do.
Roman and Logan both express their concerns to Patton, but Patton just tells them that he trusts Virgil and would keep his promise to wait for him.
Sometimes Patton will even admit that he made sure to learn certain skills, like cooking and cleaning and sewing and finances, because he and Virgil had both talked about how life would be when they got married and Patton had always wanted to take on the role of the house husband while Virgil worked to support them both.
And in their shared updates to each other, Virgil had told Patton that he was working hard to get physically stronger and more skilled at various tasks so that he could eventually get a good job to support them both, while also trying his best to take on jobs and save up money for them to use on doing things like actually getting married and buying a place to live together.
So Patton would send his own updates, usually with pictures of himself with whatever he’d managed to learn or achieve recently, and they would both continue to work as hard as they could so that they could eventually live together as they’d planned.
And Roman and Logan find this strange and unsettling as well, saying that Patton shouldn’t determine his life by his plan to be with Virgil one day.
They become even more against the arrangement when they find out that Virgil never sends Patton pictures back.
Or, at least, none of himself.
But Patton continuously shuts them down.
He says that he’s the one that always wanted to be a stay at home husband/dad.
That, if anything, Virgil was the one that was changing his plans to accommodate Patton’s own wish.
Because Virgil wanted to be a music artist.
He wanted to create all kinds of music of all kinds of genres and had ever since they were children.
But he was going to put that dream on the backburner until they were together and stable enough financially that he could focus on it.
Patton also defends that Virgil just doesn’t like to be in pictures.
He shows them that the only pictures Virgil had ever been in had been ones where Patton had kept him in the shot or he’d been caught unawares.
He says that he doesn’t mind waiting until they reunited to actually see Virgil.
That he’s fine with the pictures he has and is perfectly happy sending his own instead.
He constantly tells both Roman and Logan that this is something he genuinely wants and that they don’t need to worry.
And, although neither of them really stop worrying about it, they eventually leave him mostly alone about it.
So Patton goes about his middle and high school years sending and receiving letters from Virgil while preparing to one day marry his childhood best friend.
Meanwhile, in Alaska, Virgil does the same.
He makes a couple of friends of his own, but they are much less suspicious and against the idea of him marrying Patton.
In fact, both of them, and the entire small town Virgil lives in, are incredibly supportive of Virgil one day marrying his childhood best friend.
There are many reasons for this.
One being that it’s always been pretty obvious to everyone in town that Virgil absolutely loves Patton.
It wasn’t obvious in that he shouted it from the rooftops, like Patton did.
But, rather, it was obvious in how he talked about the other and how happy he always was to receive one of his letters.
Another reason everyone supported the plan was because of everything they knew about Patton and absolutely adored the other boy, despite never meeting him.
Virgil was always happy to talk about his future husband and could go on for hours about the smallest of things, like Patton’s tiny, almost invisible, freckles on his nose, so they all knew quite a lot about him.
And Virgil was also always happy to show off the pictures Patton sent.(which essentially translates to him always being happy to just show off Patton in general.)
So everyone very quickly gained very high opinions of the other.
A third reason was simply that Virgil was so incredibly determined to be the best husband to Patton that he pushed himself to constantly be better at everything he did.
He worked out regularly to make sure he was strong and fast enough to both do any fun activities Patton might want to do, be able to protect Patton from any sort of harm, and make sure he was physically appealing to the other.
He maintained various beauty regimens(as did Patton for similar reasons)to make sure his skin was clear and soft and his hair was also soft and smooth.
He learned various skills(metal working, bartending, car maintenance, handy work, construction, dancing, and various others)to make sure he could apply for basically any job in the future.
And he spent the majority of his time doing odd jobs around the town so that he could eventually save up enough money to buy a plane ticket to Florida and buy a house for them to live in when he got there.
So it was kind of hard to go against his complete determination to marry the other in the future.
Instead, everyone supported him.
Including Thomas and Deceit(Heckin’ hard to include Dee in AU’s like this since he doesn’t have an actual name and I don’t want to give him one of my own out of concern that I’ll confuse myself later when he finally does get one.)who both honestly believe that Patton and Virgil will definitely meet again and get married one day.
One particular person, the metal smith/jewelry maker whom Virgil works for the most, even offers to give Virgil the materials he needs for whatever kind of ring he wants to give Patton, so long as Virgil makes it himself.
So, in his senior year of high school, Virgil asks for the materials and makes a set of rings for himself and Patton.
And after graduating, alongside Thomas and Deceit, he leaves Alaska and moves back to Florida.
Patton finds out about Virgil coming to Florida and the two exchange cell phone numbers with the intent on simply calling each other when he arrives and quickly meeting right after that.
But Patton ends up losing his phone and getting a new number.
He also forgot Virgil’s number and left the boxes of letters from Virgil, including the one with the phone number on it, back at his childhood home instead of taking it them with him to his shared apartment in a separate city in Florida hours away from home.
So Virgil calls, but gets no answer.
Surprisingly, he isn’t incredibly bothered by it.
When Thomas and Deceit question this, Virgil just tells them that Patton was clumsy sometimes and reminds them that he’d already managed to lose and break three phones in the past year alone.
So he figures that he’ll just have to find Patton the harder way.
Although he’s attending a university within a particular city hours away from his old childhood friend, when he has the time to make the trip, he goes back there and meets up with Patton’s parents.
They recognize him almost instantly and welcome him in easily.
When he asks, they confirm his theory that Patton had simply broken his phone and they tell him that they know Patton is attending a particular university.
And it turns out they’re going to the same place.
Virgil had left Alaska before he could hear about which school Patton decided to go to, so he’s happy to hear that they’re actually so close together.
So he heads back and starts trying to keep an eye out for the other.
But, unfortunately, their schedules manage to keep them from meeting.
A few months go by and it’s agonizing for both of them.
Patton has no way of contacting Virgil anymore and just plans on staying in school and waiting for the other to eventually find him somehow.
Roman and Logan find this plan slightly ridiculous and just try to quietly make him give up on waiting try actually being with other people instead.
Meanwhile, Virgil just continues to search for Patton while Thomas(He’s attending school with Virgil but Deceit is content with just working from home.(I want him to be a game developer. I think he’d enjoy doing something like that.)tries to keep an eye out at well.
But, while Virgil and Patton don’t meet up, everyone else does.
Thomas ends up in the same performing arts courses as Roman.
Virgil ends up in the same academic courses as Logan.
Patton ends up in some of the same humanities courses as Thomas.
Virgil ends up getting involved with Roman’s performing arts classes because he’s in a wood working course and comes by sometimes to help out backstage.(As more work practice, really.)
So everyone meets and gets closer to each other.
But Roman and Logan don’t realize who Virgil is and Thomas never actually meets Patton during class because it’s an online course where all of the students usually use nicknames when they communicate.
Instead, Logan and Roman befriend Virgil without even knowing who he is.
This happens because everyone simply knows him for his last name, Storm, and Roman and Logan, and even Patton, don’t actually know what he looks like now.
Logan and Virgil become particularly good friends, Roman and Virgil gaining more of a frenemies sort of relationship, and it becomes a game between them for Logan to figure out what Virgil’s first name actually is.
More months go by and it’s almost a full year later when Logan finally figures it out.
By this time, Patton has also started looking for Virgil, having heard from his parents that he was going to the same university, but they’ve still had no luck.
Until Logan and Virgil are sitting in a cafe, Logan taking calculated guesses on what Virgil’s first name is.
Virgil ends up confessing, after Logan asks him several random questions in the hope of getting some kind of hint, that his last name of Storm was actually the one he’d gotten after being adopted by his uncle.
That his original last name was actually Knight.
And, suddenly, Logan realizes who he is and is proven correct when he says the name Virgil and Virgil laughs in surprise at him getting it right so quickly after learning his original last name.
And Logan is freaking out now because this has to be Patton’s Virgil.
Patton had said that he attended the same universtiy.
That the other had dark, almost black, brown hair and purple eyes.
That he was as smart as Logan and was very witty.
That he wanted to create music one day but was currently just striving to be good at enough things to get himself a solid job to support them both with.
And Storm, the classmate he’d been friends with for almost a year now, matched that description perfectly.
Logan feels like an idiot for not realizing it sooner and kind of shuts down while Virgil wonders what broke him, until Logan suddenly admits that Patton is going to be upset with him and then Virgil is up like a shot, questioning him.
And Logan explains that he’s both friends and roommates with the other, alongside Roman, and offers to help them meet up that weekend.
Logan says nothing to Patton but talks about it all with Roman.
And the two end up admitting that they actually think that Virgil was a good match with Patton.
In fact, they’ve been trying to discreetly set the two up for weeks now but with no luck.
So, a few days later, they take Patton to the place they agreed to meet Virgil at and Virgil is waiting there with Thomas.
And Patton knows it’s Virgil as soon as he sees him, sure because of the eyes and the familiar but different face.
And Virgil just doesn’t really know what to do when he finally sees Patton as well and ends up just saying, “Hey, Patty...”.
And Patton just starts running towards him and launches himself at him at full speed.
And Virgil catches him easily and holds him close and they both start crying and rambling about how happy they are to be together and how they’ve missed each other and been waiting so long.
And then Virgil eventually sets Patton down again and gets down on one knee and proposes without hesitation.
And Patton says yes, without hesitation.
And they end up clinging to each other for the rest of the day and already start making plans to find a place of their own to move into, one that’s close so that they can both still finish school together.
And they make more plans to meet up as much as possible when they can and, eventually, they follow thru with those plans.
And, a few years after this, once Patton has graduated with a bachelors in culinary arts and Virgil continues working towards a degree in music production, while working a few various jobs that keep them both afloat in the house they purchased with Virgil’s savings, they finally get married.
And they continue to live a happy life together.
And that’s that.
Whew...
That was a lot.
But I really like this AU, okay?
It’s very romantic and cute, to me.
And I’ve thought about it a lot.
I have a few different versions of it in my head.
This is just one of my favorites.
I ended up rambling about it a bit more than I expected tho, tbh.
Ah well.
Hope nobody minds.

I’m back! Forever ago, @thomasthesandersengine sent me a childhood best friends logince prompt, and I finally got it done!
Word Count: 822
Warnings: food, restaurant mentions
Pairings: Logince, and some background moxiety because I can’t help myself
Tag List: @ren-allen @emo-sanders-sides-loving-unicorn @roxiefox23 @bloodropsblog @insanityandimperfection
Logan wasn’t nervous. He didn’t get nervous. He was the most respected (and feared) food critic in Oregon. He could make or break restaurants with a single review. But this restaurant was different. This chef was different.
Roman Prince was the rising star of the culinary world. Everyone knew the story- after finishing his studies at the Culinary Institute of America at Hyde Park, he worked his way through the ranks at Iron Chef Michael Symon’s flagship restaurant, Lola. He recently returned to Portland, his hometown, to open up his own restaurant, a barbecue take on New York City’s famous Stardust Diner, performers and all. One doesn’t work under Iron Chef Symon without mastering barbecue, and Roman was known for serving dishes as flamboyant as he is. But that’s not what was making Logan nervous- he’d reviewed many hot-shots before and wasn’t afraid to knock them down a peg or two.
He meticulously tied his tie, chastising himself. It’s just another day on the job. No way he remembers you, you were 13 when he moved away. It’s been a decade and a half, and a whirlwind one for both of us, no matter how close you used to be or how much- Logan quickly shut that train of thought down and finished getting ready, trying to ignore the butterflies in his stomach.
-
“Breathe, Chef. Like we practiced. In for 4, hold 7, out for 8. Tonight is going to be perfect. You planned it, after all.”
“Thank you, Virge. You’re a lifesaver. I’ll pay you back later, maybe help you get with that waiter you’re head over heels for,” Roman said to his sous chef, his right hand man, with a wink, “name’s Patton, right? One of our best performers, too.”
“I- um- yes, but- er, thanks?” Virgil stuttered, blushing, before walking away to find something, anything, else to do.
Roman chuckled to himself. Poor boy has no idea Patton’s just as smitten. At least he knows Patton knows who he is. I wonder if Logan remembers- No. This isn’t some Raoul/Christine love story, no matter how much we talked about it after I had to tell him I was leaving. It was decades ago, and we both have jobs to do. Stay focused, Roman. He’s the final word in the Portland culinary scene, not the boy you loved before you knew what that meant. He shook his head as if to clear out his thoughts, and went back to prepping for the night.
-
The food was perfect. Frankly, Logan would have been hard-pressed to find anything substantial to criticize. And suddenly it was time to meet the chef. Logan watched as Roman confidently walked toward his table.
“Phenomenally well done, chef, and welcome back to Portland.”
“It’s my pleasure to be back. I’ve missed it. Hopefully now that my restaurant is up and running, I can start rebuilding relationships I had to leave behind.”
“I’m sure you won’t have trouble there. Can’t imagine someone with your charisma and joie de vivre being easy to forget,” Logan replied, avoiding the eye contact Roman was searching for.
Roman’s reply was cut short by the start of the next performance. His two stars, Patton and Valerie, had been practicing “Point of No Return” from Phantom of the Opera for months, and were debuting it tonight. He couldn’t help but notice Logan’s eyes cloud over as he started saying something under his breath. Roman stepped closer to hear him, and his breathing stopped.
“- let her mind wander. Little Lotte thought: am I fonder of dolls, or of goblins, or shoes? Or of riddles or frocks?”
“Those picnics in the attic…” Roman added instinctually.
“Or of chocolates?” Logan couldn’t believe it. He remembers!
“Father playing the violin.”
“As we read to each other, dark stories of the North.”
“No- what I love best, Lotte said, is when I’m asleep in my bed, and the Angel of Music sings songs in my head.” Out of habit, Roman started singing at ‘Angel of Music’.
“The Angel of Music sings songs in my head.” In a harmony from long ago, they finished quietly together.
“R- Roman, you remember?” Logan broke the emotionally charged silence that had fallen.
“Lo, of course. You weren’t just my best friend, we had something… magical. Or was that all in my head?”
“Not at all, Ro. Let me take you out this weekend. Let’s catch up, get to know each other as we are now. Unless you’re in a relationship, which you probably are. You’ve always been magnif-” Roman cut Logan off with a brief, sweet kiss.
“No, I’m not seeing anyone. You know what? Forget this weekend. Let’s go get a drink and talk. My staff has a good handle on things here.”
“I’d like that very much,” Logan replied, blushing and adjusting his glasses. No one noticed Virgil collecting on his bet with Thomas, one of the other sous chefs.

The Long Road Home
Rating: Mature
Pairings: Platonic to Romantic Moxiety / Background LAMP
Summary/Excerpt:
Some say childhood friendships don't last. Others say they're forever. For Patton Bunker, they're life-saving.
Virgil Wraith is happy enough to leave his past behind him; left forgotten like the scared little orphan he used to be. He's happy now; he has a steady job (sort of), two loving boyfriends, and he gets to travel as much as he wants. Being a consort to Prince Roman has good perks.
But he remembers the injustices he saw. And when he sees his past haunting him from the horizon, he doesn't hesitate. This time, he can stop the pain.

Randomly had this idea "Moxiety childhood best friends to lovers edition" and ended up with loads of random moxiety childhood best friends headcannons. Enjoy! (no explicit romance bc they're still kids who don't have it all figured out yet but there is some confirmed mutual pining oops)
. Their parents are so confused about how they ended up becoming friends
. But Patton helps Virgil to open up and Virgil keeps Patton out of trouble
. So they just go with it
. Patton was an insanely clumsy kid
. Like, constantly has colourful bandaids all over him
. He was just so excitable and always running around and falling over
. Virgil was the safe kid
. He was the kid who wore a helmet and protective gear when skateboarding
. He never ran anywhere unless it was to stop Patton from doing something reckless and impulsive
. Patton had so many feelings and he felt them so intensely
. When he was really angry or really sad Virgil was the only one who had any chance to calm him down
. Virgil was really quiet and kept his feelings to himself at all costs
.But then when he became friends with Patton he started to get better at expressing himself
. I love the idea of Virgil being really protective of Patton
. He definitely punched a kid for making his best friend cry
. Catradora moment when Virgil is jealous that Patton makes a new friend but then he assures him that
. "You're always gonna be my best friend Virgil! But we can both be regular friends with Roman if you want!"
. Bro imagine the epic slumber parties they'd have
. Patton would bring the snacks and Virgil would bring the definitely age inappropriate movies and soft blankets
. I live for the idea of them doing traditionally "girly" stuff at sleepovers like Virgil painting Patton's nails and Patton plaits his hair
. They would top and tail in the bed but always woke up cuddling
. Bonus slightly older moxiety where Virgil wakes up first and just kinda snuggles in because even if he doesn't quite understand his feelings for Patton yet he knows this is nice
. Patton was one of those kids to pick up shiny stuff off the floor
. "Hey Virgil look at this pretty marble!"
. "Pat that's probably dirty put it down!"
. Patton was so the "look at me I'm gonna do a flip off this jungle gym" kid
. Virgil lived in constant fear for the safety of his best friend
. They didn't argue much but when they did it ended in tears
. Usually it would be Virgil's mom to call Patton's house so they could talk it out
. They'd hug it out and apologise the next day
. Soft for the idea of them being eachothers first crush
. Patton realises when he's 11
. Virgil doesn't realise till he's like 14
. I imagine in human AUs that they don't get together till high school so the PINING
. Buuut that's young teen moxiety so shhh that's not part of this
. As a birthday present one year Patton made Virgil a little pink teddy bear
. And despite his hatred of the colour pink he loved it and brought it everywhere
. Virgil kinda struggled in school because the teachers went too fast for him
. So Patton always helped him after school
. And was really patient and worked with him till he understood
. Virgil had super severe social anxiety
. So when they were invited to birthday parties and stuff
. Patton would just lead him to the quietest place he could find
. Virgil felt bad because he knew Patton loved parties
. But Patton would always assure him that he'd rather be with Virgil
. And oooo what's that fluttering in Virgil's stomach?
. Haha, nope he didn't figure it out for YEARS
. Just-
. They're best friends
. They care so much about each other
. And once again
. I am s o f t

is it possible for you to summarize pattons playlist please?
*cracks fingers* glad you asked
Things I have surmised from Patton’s playlist, in order of song:
He wants to be seen as wholesome and silly/fun
The only time he felt he could express himself was in Thomas’s childhood, and now he feels stifled and inadequate in comparison
He’s overwhelmed by how quickly life is moving, but he feels like it’s his responsibility to keep up with the other sides, even when he can’t
He knows he’s alone in enjoying simple, domestic pleasures, but he’s okay with that :)
As Thomas’s connection with religion, he struggles with holding that bond and keeping faith / he feels like it’s his responsibility to answer the ‘prayers’ and needs of the others
Even as he messes up again and again, he wants to believe in a happy ending, even in a hostile world
He feels like he isn’t worth anything if he isn’t caring for others / he’s very lonely
he wishes the other sides would stop running themselves ragged and appreciate themselves
He has a huge crush on at least one other side, and wishes they would recognize that they don’t have to prove anything for him to love them i got royality / moxiety vibes but that’s just me
He fantasizes about running away and leaving his worries behind him, sometimes, but he knows there’s nowhere he could go.
He’s always the one who comforts others, but no one ever comforts him, yet he can’t bring himself to hate them for it
He’s embarrassed by how open he is with his feelings
He wants to believe that he’s doing the right thing
It scares him, how much Thomas is losing the joy he had in childhood
He forces himself to be optimistic, even when it could hurt him
He really loves and trusts his friends :D
No matter what, he believes the world is a place where you can create kindness and love, if you really try
That being said, it hurts him, sometimes, how much hate and anger there is, and he often wishes there was a better place he could escape to
He misses the way things were when they were younger, and wishes they could be that easy again
He’s afraid of being alone
Over all, I was really interested in the stark contrast between the sub-textual longing to be alone and worry-free compared with the songs about friendship and undertone of needing to be of service. Also, there was a lot more running away / escaping imagery than I would’ve thought of Patton!

Simply Meant To Be (pt 2)
[Part 1]
You don’t need to read part 1 to read this one since that one is Roman backstory and this one is Janus backstory
Rating: teen
Word Count: 3456
Pairings: Remile, Moxiety kinda (they’re kids, but they’re soulmates so I guess it’s future moxiety), Roceit but only at the very end
Warnings: religion, religious cults, religious guilt, child abuse, internalized homophobia, childhood trauma, stalking, threats of kidnapping, throwing up, psychological warfare (?), paranoia, swearing
I think that’s everything
It’s worse than you’d expect after the first part, but not quite as bad as the warnings make it sound, but if any of the warnings make you uncomfortable then feel free to skip this part
I started with some religious stuff right off the bat, so I put the entire fic below the cut
~~~START~~~
When Janus was growing up, he was taught that the colorblindness that everyone was born with was a test from God. God created a beautiful world full of wonderful colors, then gave man the ability to view only a fraction of this beauty. The wicked ones searched selfishly for ways to see even more, but the humble ones were grateful for what little beauty they were given.
Soulmates were frowned upon in the Community. Janus was taught from a young age that soulmates were a trick, sent by Satan to lead people away from God. Even those who met their soulmates by accident were expelled from the Community.
As such, Janus never expected to see color — for a while he’d even dreaded the mere thought of it — so he taught himself to discern between shades of gray. He was very good at it, almost to the point that someone who could see color would be fooled into thinking Janus could too.
The Elders were not very pleased with this skill, and the Community as a whole was torn as to whether it was a sin or not. They said it was a reflection of his desire to see colors, of his desire to stray from God.
So Janus repented. He begged forgiveness and promised to abandon his skill. He was devoted to God and only God.
That was a lie of course, Janus prided himself on his ability to discern shades of gray, but he didn’t see why that had to be mutually exclusive to being devoted to God.
Pride was a sin, and so was lying, but they were lesser sins to the Community than soulmates and colors. God would forgive him.
He lived in the Community for twenty years, rarely leaving the town and when he did it was only for a few hours.
He carries a lot of baggage from those twenty years, but he’s doing his best to shoulder it, to not let it affect his relationships with those around him, to not let any of the Community’s teachings hurt his son.
Sometimes the little voice in the back of his head told him he was being selfish. Janus always silenced this voice with one thought: there’s nothing wrong with a little selfishness.
Janus started going to gay bars on Saturday nights to feed his selfishness. He was never looking for anything, he had a young son at home after all, but one time, he kissed a man — he threw up in the bathroom afterwards, but he still counted it as a victory.
There was a teenager that lived in the apartment next to Janus and Virgil’s first home outside the Community, and they were always willing to watch Virgil for a few hours, even if Janus couldn’t afford to pay them much. Elliot was Janus’ first friend outside of the Community, probably his first real friend ever.
Janus hit Virgil once. Virgil was about two and a half at the time, and he’d proudly told Janus that his favorite color was magenta — after the dog on Blue’s Clues — and Janus hadn’t even thought, he’d just slapped his own son across the face. In the Community, a slap on the face would be the least of a child’s concerns after saying such a thing, but this wasn’t the Community, and Janus was trying to be better than them. He’d been completely consumed by guilt before the tears even began forming in Virgil’s eyes.
“I’m so sorry baby!” Janus apologized, pulling Virgil in for a tight hug and rocking back and forth in a soothing motion. Virgil easily accepted the hug, and that only made Janus feel worse. Virgil trusted him completely, and he’d betrayed that trust. Janus was going to be better; he was going to do better. He was never going to hurt Virgil again. “I’m so sorry darling. You didn’t do anything wrong. It was all my fault; I shouldn’t have done that. I did a very bad thing, I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay daddy. I forgive you.” Janus’ heart broke even more; he didn’t deserve forgiveness. He didn’t deserve this child.
After Virgil went to bed that night, Janus searched the internet for therapists. Doctor Emile Picani came highly recommended, and after a brief email exchange, they agreed to help Janus, even though he couldn’t afford their usual rate.
Picani was an… interesting character. They made several strange statements then told him that they were references to cartoons that Janus had never even heard of. TVs in the Community weren’t for children to use, and Virgil was only two, he mostly just watched Blue’s Clues, Dora the Explorer, and Sesame Street. After telling Picani that, they changed their references accordingly, telling Janus that they had their own two-year-old at home, and they were more than familiar with the kind of shows Virgil was watching.
Picani didn’t think Janus was a bad person, which was a foreign thought for Janus, who was certain that he was going straight to Hell. They were good at finding ways to make the little voice in Janus’ head shut up. It took Janus a while to believe him, but it got a little easier every week.
Over the years, Emile became his friend, and Janus was grateful to have them every day.
Emile was the one who insisted that Janus let them throw a birthday party for Virgil’s 5th birthday. Birthday parties hadn’t been a thing in the Community, and even after he left, Janus mostly just celebrated Virgil’s birthday by getting him new clothes, a whole party was a completely foreign idea.
But Janus had said yes and agreed to bring Virgil over to Emile’s place the following Saturday. The party, he’d been told, would just be Emile, Emile’s husband Remy, and their son Patton. That was good, neither Janus nor Virgil were very good in crowds.
Of course, whether there was a crowd or not hardly mattered when Virgil had met Patton and informed Janus that “everything is prettier now!”, Janus had a panic attack either way.
Virgil can see colors! That isn’t allowed, they’ll take him away! He’s only five he needs me! They won’t let me keep him! This is all wrong!
“-five, six, seven. Out, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. In, two, three, four. Hold, two, three, four, five, six, seven. Out, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Good. Are you with me, Jan?”
“Yes,” Janus croaked. He was in a different room now, with only Emile. Virgil was nowhere to be seen. “Where’s Virgil!?”
“Breath, Janus. Virgil is in the living room with Remy and Patton. Remy is teaching them all the different colors.”
“They’re going to take him away!”
“No one’s going to take him away. There is absolutely nothing wrong with him meeting his soulmate. Everything is going to be okay.”
“I don’t want to lose him.”
“You’re not going to lose him. You’re not in the Community, there’s no reason anyone will take him away.”
“I’m sorry,” Janus apologized, wiping at his tears. “I probably scared the kids.”
“Would you like a hug?” Janus nodded. That was one of the nice things about being friends with Emile, they gave great hugs and gave them freely. “Virgil was a little concerned about you, but Patton didn’t notice. Remy’s with them now, they’re okay. Do you want to go join them?”
“Not yet.”
“Alright.” Emile allowed them to sit in silence for a while before speaking up again. “I’m proud of you.”
“Why?” Janus asked miserably.
“Your son met his soulmate and you didn’t respond with anger, you didn’t repeat any of the Community’s teachings, it’s a big step for you.”
“It doesn't feel like a big step.”
“Well it is.” And that was that.
Ten minutes later Janus was feeling up to joining the others. Virgil climbed into Janus’s lap as soon as he sat down, and having his son in his arms did wonders as far as calming himself down went.
“This is my source material!” Virgil informed Patton and Remy happily. Patton accepted that information easily, but Remy shot Janus a bemused look.
Janus shrugged in return. As soon as Virgil had started getting anywhere near being able to speak, Elliot started teaching him weird phrases in the hope that Virgil’s first word would be strange, some of them stuck.
Virgil started babbling after that, telling Janus about how ‘Mr. Remy’ was teaching him about colors and soulmates. Internally, Janus was grateful that someone else had given Virgil the soulmate talk, someone who hadn’t grown up with a cynical and toxic view of soulmates.
Other than the hiccup at the beginning, Virgil’s birthday party went pretty well. Patton was a very nice boy — though he’d have to be considering he was Emile’s kid — and Janus truly couldn’t have picked a better soulmate for Virgil if he tried. Patton seemed to have an absurd amount of emotional intelligence for a not-yet five-year-old, and when Virgil starts fatiguing towards the end of the night, Patton’s energy level changes appropriately.
Janus headed home that night with a sleeping child, two new stuffed animals — one of Blue and one of Magenta — a box of Playdough, a Sesame Street coloring book with crayons — a last minute addition thrown in because of Virgil’s newfound colors — and newfound sense of peace. His son met his soulmate and nothing bad had happened.
Play dates became a regular thing, and Janus was glad his son would already have one friend going into kindergarten in the fall. One of the kids’ favorite things to do during play dates was painting, and as a result, Janus found himself using his skill to baffle Remy with his ability to paint everything the correct color, even when Remy tried to trick him. Painting, however, was not particularly fun to Janus in and of itself, and wasn’t something he partook in when he and Virgil were at home.
Remy was actually the one to suggest a different medium for Janus: makeup. Remy even allowed Janus to use him as a canvas, and Janus’ skills on a living canvas soon flourished. Often he would sit down to practice on Remy, and Virgil and Patton would do the same with Emile. Janus’ work would of course look a lot better in the end, but Emile vehemently claimed to love both looks equally.
Eventually Janus started a YouTube channel dedicated to makeup tutorials. He always used Remy or Emile as models, appearing himself with contacts and half his face painted to look like a snake, hoping that was enough to obscure his identity in case anyone in the Community ever came across his channel.
His channel became fairly popular, not enough for Janus to make a living from that alone, but he did make enough from the channel for it to pay for itself. He could afford better makeup brands, which meant he could make cooler designs, which made his channel more popular. It was going well.
Until his mother showed up on his doorstep one day, nearly a decade since he’d last seen her.
“Janus.”
“Mother.” He didn’t have anything to say to her. Not a thing. Ten years and he hadn’t once felt the need to reach out to her.
“When are you going to stop this silly game and come home, Janus? We miss you, and this is no environment to raise Virgil in.” She gestured to Janus’ apartment, and Janus’ blood began to boil.
“Well excuse me for not meeting your standards, mother, but as I recall, it wasn’t my choice to leave in the first place!”
“If this is about Emmaline-”
“It’s not just about Emmaline! Virgil and I are perfectly happy where we are, and I’m not about to go exposing him to your toxic-”
“TOXIC!? Janus Lysander Hadley you take that back this instant! I will not have you speaking about our faith that way!”
“It’s not my faith, mother, it’s yours, and it has no place in my home!”
He should have been expecting the slap, it was a common way for his mother to respond to anyone disagreeing with her, but it had been so long, the sharp sting on his cheek came as a complete surprise.
“Step aside, Janus, I’m taking Virgil home whether you’re coming or not. You’re clearly not fit to raise a child.”
Her trying to push past Janus and into his apartment shook Janus out of his shocked stupor and he blocked her advance.
“You’ve never been fit to raise a child in your life!” He hissed, pushing her away from the door. “Now kindly fuck off, mother, you aren’t welcome here!”
He slammed the door on her shocked face, and quickly locked the door, locked the deadbolt, and slid the door chain in place. As soon as the door was thoroughly locked, his mother started pounding on the door, the gravity of the situation sunk in, and his panic started mounting.
His mother found him. She knew where he lived. She wanted to take Virgil from him. He yelled at his mother. She knew where he lived. He made her angry. She wanted to take Virgil from him. She knew where he lived!
“Sperm donor?”
His son’s voice snapped him out of his spiraling thoughts. Virgil was peeking out from behind the partition for the living room, where he wouldn’t have been visible from the door. He was clearly scared, because of course he was, his father had just had a screaming match with a woman he probably didn’t recognize outside their apartment, and said woman was proceeding to yelling abuse through the apartment door. It had to have more than a little unsettling for the ten-year-old.
“It’s okay, mini me, everything’s going to be fine.” Janus crossed the room to pull his son into a hug. Virgil latched on to him immediately, shaking from stress.
“I don’t want to go with her,” Virgil mumbled into Janus’s sweater. “She’s mean.”
“You don’t have to.” Janus tightened his arms around his son protectively. “You’re staying with me.”
Janus’ mother stopped pounding on the door eventually — presumably because one of the neighbors either threatened to call the police, or actually called the police — but Janus and Virgil’s nerves were both shot for the rest of the day, and they both ended up spending the night at the Picanis’.
Janus didn’t see hide nor hair of his mother for weeks after the incident, but his paranoia levels were through the roof. He wouldn’t let Virgil be home alone anymore, instead having him go home with Patton after school, staying at the Picanis’ until Janus could pick him up. Every day when he got home he would search their apartment for anything out of place that would suggest that someone broke in, he even went as far as constructing minor booby traps for anyone who tried to root around through their things.
“Janus — I’m saying this as your friend, and as a mental health professional — I’m concerned about you,” Emile told him one day when he came to pick up Virgil from their house. “You’ve been on edge for weeks, it’s not healthy, for you or for Virgil. He told me he’s been having nightmares, you know.”
“I know, I know! But I don’t know what to do!” Janus stressed, he was dangerously close to his breaking point, but he didn’t know how to stop it.
“Have you considered moving?” Emile asked gently. “It’s clear you don’t feel safe here, maybe putting some more distance between you and your parents will ease your distress.”
“I can’t move; you guys live here. I can’t just take Virgil away from Patton, he’d be devastated.”
“I’m not saying move to Antarctica and become a hermit, we can visit, and Patton and Virgil can Skype. Yeah, it’ll be hard and both of them, but this is hard on them too. Janus, I think it’s important for you to feel safe in your own home, and you obviously don’t.”
“I don’t know…”
But a week later, Janus would be pushed over the edge.
He came home from work — thankfully before picking Virgil up — to find his apartment door wide open. Cautiously, he searched the apartment for any intruders, but after twenty minutes he was confident that no one was around.
There were a few things missing, mostly all of Virgil’s crayons and colored pencils, as well as his coloring books and some of the drawings he’d made that Janus had put on the fridge. There were also a few photos of Janus and Virgil missing from their frames, and a tile with Virgil’s baby handprint missing from the kitchen. And three of Janus’ booby traps had been sprung telling him that whomever broke into his apartment — presumably his mother — had opened the hall closet, the cabinet next to the fridge, and the medicine cabinet in the bathroom.
As if that was bad enough, there, in plain sight on the dining room table was a copy of the Community’s version of the Bible.
“We have to move.” Janus wasn’t sure how he ended up at the Picanis’; everything after finding the bible had been a panicked blur. All he knew was that he couldn’t stay at that apartment anymore.
Moving was hard. Virgil didn’t like it, but he was afraid of their apartment too, and if Janus and Virgil just moved in with the Picanis — which Remy had suggested — then Janus’ parents would just start terrorizing them too, and Janus couldn’t have that. No, it was better that he and Virgil move away, not just to a new apartment, but to a new city, a new state even! Somewhere his parents wouldn’t find him or Virgil.
They ended up moving to Florida, halfway across the country. Remy had a cousin in Florida, one that he swore up and down that Janus would love, and moving somewhere where he sort of knew someone was better than starting over from scratch a second time.
Remy and Patton came with them to help them move and to allow Patton and Virgil to spend as much time together as they could. Emile stayed behind since they couldn’t reschedule all their appointments on such short notice. Emile did suggest a new therapist near Janus’ new home, and included a suggestion for Virgil too.
Having Remy around for the moving process was good because he was able to parcel things out in ways that didn’t make Janus feel overwhelmed with the amount of work that went into moving. Having Patton around for the moving process was good because when all Virgil could see were negatives, Patton pointed out the positives and had a way of making Virgil begrudgingly agree to them.
Part of the moving process was for Janus to change his and Virgil’s name in the hopes of throwing his parents off their scent. Since Virgil was taking the move so hard, Janus let him pick their new last name to make him feel better. Of course Virgil was beginning to enter his emo-pre-teen-angst phase, so he picked a name that was edgy and extra: Storm.
Janus Storm.
He sounded like a supervillain, but it made Virgil happy, and he could never resist anything that made Virgil happy.
Before Remy and Patton went home, Remy introduced Janus and Virgil to his cousin: Thomas Sanders. Thomas owned a theater in town, and offered to let Janus use him as a model for his YouTube videos. He was alright; Virgil seemed to like him well enough, and Janus trusted Virgil’s instincts on these kinds of things.
It was a teary goodbye when Remy and Patton went home, and Virgil refused to speak for the rest of the day, but once their plane touched down, Patton called on Remy’s phone, so maybe the distance wouldn’t be too bad.
The Picanis came to visit for Virgil’s eleventh birthday since it occurred during Patton’s winter break. They ended up staying for almost a week.
Almost a year after Janus and Virgil moved to Florida, Thomas called Janus to tell him that the makeup artist at his theater quit, and that the job was Janus’ if he wanted it.
Taking that job turned out to be the best decision of his life.
“I’m Roman.”
The moment Janus had been dreading since he was a child was finally happening. The moment Janus had learned to be cautiously optimistic about was finally happening.
Slowly, as though someone were carefully turning up the volume on a speaker, the monochrome world around Janus began to change, and he finally understood what Virgil meant by ‘everything is prettier’, because it was. It was wonderful and terrifying all at once.
“Janus.”
~~~END~~~
Janus’ backstory wasn’t supposed to be quite this angsty but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ here we are. It’s probably never going to get this heavy again
Let me know if I forgot to tag anything or put anything in the warnings

Day 20: Moxiety
@tsshipmonth2020
(Yes this is out of order, but I figured I’d rather give you guys out of order content than no content at all. Hope that’s okay.)
Day 20 - You can send one item to your soulmate every year.
Content warning: Christmas, food mentions, homophobic family members mentions, serious fluffiness.
Word count: 2.7k
Songs mentioned in this fic: “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”.
Patton’s eyes scanned over the letter, barely reading the words he’d read many times before. After the first time he’d gotten one, years ago, he’d re-read it so many times he’d committed it to memory.
Patton Hart,
You are receiving this notice to inform you that the annual soulmate item exchange is arriving. On December 24th, BEFORE MIDNIGHT, please bring your package to your nearest postal service or drop box, marked clearly with the provided adhesive label on the TOP. Item must be contained in the shipping box provided. Other boxes will not be accepted. If the drop off time is missed, your package will not be received.
There was no signature, no return address, no number to call. At first, he’d been slightly suspicious, since everyone he asked had no further information than what was on the small letter, but after the first year, when a beautiful black and gold notebook and a matching pen had shown up on his doorstep on Christmas morning, he’d decided to heck with his worries. Despite his initial curiosity, he’d sent a gift anyways (if it was legitimate, he wasn’t about to leave his partner without a present!), a grey beanie that he’d stitched a small heart and message into.
He giddily placed the letter back into the envelope and stuck it into the gap between the hallway mirror and the wall so he wouldn’t forget. Although, he doubted he would. He’d already bought a present, months ago, when his eyes fell upon a black and purple striped sweater in the window of the mall. The black thin stripes occasionally jumped, looking like the lines on a heart monitor, and it hooked him instantly. It was simplistic yet eye catching and unique, like the gifts Patton always received from his soulmate, so he immediately bought it and wrapped it as soon as he got home. He didn’t know his soulmate’s size, but you really can’t go wrong with an extra large (baggy sleeves are ideal, after all).
His time passed quickly, filled with movie nights with his roommate (who insisted on watching Nightmare before Christmas at least once a week) and trying new Christmas cookie recipes. It was his favorite holiday, with the songs and the decorations and the ever present smell of cinnamon in every store, so the moment they had passed Halloween, every moment was filled with his Christmas playlists and cheesy holiday sweaters. His family was coming to his place for their celebration this year, so the place was decked out with tinsel and little snowy villages, candles and fairy lights on every wall, and of course, their tree in the corner of the living room. It was going to be… amazing.
He’d offered to take his roommate’s soulmate item along with him to the post office, seeing as he was uneasy in high crowd situations, and soulmate exchange days were always insanely busy. It had been the right move, too, because as soon as the office came into view, he could already see the crowd of people milling outside, trying to get into the small door. What could you expect, though, only giving people a twenty four hour window to all show up to the same spot? By the time he got inside and got both packages passed to the handler on the other side (an arduous process, since they had to check each gift thoroughly to ensure there were no cards or any other way to identify the sender), it was dark outside. All he wanted to do was curl up with some hot chocolate and watch the Grinch, as the two of them had planned.
That’s what they did, falling asleep on the couch in the process. They were awoken in the morning by a knock at the door, Patton gently extracting himself from Virgil’s arms and turning off the TV, cringing that the cover screen of the movie had been on all night. The other mumbled in annoyance at his heat source disappearing and sat up, rubbing his eyes.
“It’s too early.”
“Merry Christmas, Virge!” Patton shrieked, ignoring his roommate’s mock irritated snarl as he gave him a tight hug. “Let’s go get our gifts!”
Begrudgingly, Virgil followed him to the door that he flung open, revealing two small parcels on the step. The labels from the senders had been replaced with simple name tags, another way to ensure that their soulmates would not be traceable. The other houses on the block all had similar ones outside their doors, and the carrier was nowhere to be seen, as usual. He picked them both up, handing Virgil his, and running back into the kitchen to get scissors, pretty much vibrating with glee.
“I’m making coffee first. You want some?”
Patton hummed, looking between the gift before him and Virgil’s tired eyes. “This can wait. Let’s have coffee.”
Virgil was barely able to conceal with excitement at being chosen over a Christmas present by someone who was essentially an overgrown child, pulling out two mugs. He passed his package to Patton, who placed it beside his on the table, and shuffled around his roommate to start on breakfast.
“It’s Christmas. You’re going to eat breakfast for once,” Patton interrupted the moment Virgil started complaining, grinning widely when he finally agreed.
“Do you ever wonder who your soulmate’s gonna be? What they’ll be like?” Virgil asked as he poured the coffee grounds, dangerously precise as always. The elder hummed.
“They’re your soulmate. So I guess, a perfect match to you. It’s not like they won’t like you or anything. That’s against the whole point!” An egg sizzled as it hit the pan, quickly followed by another.
“I guess,” He mumbled, clicking the on button on the machine. The smell of coffee quickly filled the small kitchen, “So when is your family getting here?”
“Around noon,” Patton chirped, flipping the first egg while simultaneously popping bread in the toaster with his other hand, “I like to cook, but my moms don’t trust me to make the main dish alone. My sisters are super excited to be old enough to help make food this year-- it’s so cute. But yeah, they should be here by noon.”
Virgil cracked a pained smile, watching the dripping coffee into the pot. “Okay. I’ll be out of your hair by then.”
Patton’s hand froze in mid air, whipping around to his roommate. “Excuse me?”
“I said I’ll be gone by then,” Virgil repeated, looking down to play with the hem of his sweater, “Do you want me to leave earlier? I can if you want.” His voice very nearly cracked as he spoke, tone getting quieter with each word. Patton’s heart shattered.
“Why do you think I want you to leave?” He whispered, blindly shutting the stove off behind him so the eggs wouldn’t burn. The toast popping startled them both, but neither could find it in them to laugh as they usually would have. Virgil shrugged.
“I mean, your family’s coming over. I’m not family. And I know you were super excited for them to come over, and I don’t want to… ruin the vibe,” He shook his fingers in weak jazz hands, shooting a watery grin at Patton. “I was just planning to go to the mall or something. I think it’s open-”
His words were silenced as Patton threw his arms around Virgil’s shoulders, pulling him into a tight hug. It was no secret that Virgil didn’t get along well with his own family. That was the understatement of the year, really. Patton didn’t know the details, refused to pry, all he knew is that it had something to do with Virgil coming out to a pretty conservative family, an action that ended with him being split off from everyone. He had lost his little brother to his parents cutting contact, among other things, and Patton realized with a start that this was Virgil’s first Christmas without his family.
In the single year they’d been roommates, the two had grown closer than any childhood friend Patton had kept throughout the years. Heck, he’d maybe consider them closer than he was with his moms, and that was saying a lot. For them to even fall asleep on the couch after a movie night, as they’d done last night, was a regular occurrence for them. They admitted secrets to each other they hadn’t fully admitted to themselves, about their own aromantic natures, about what that meant for soulmates, about what kind of pie was the best. Not all their conversations were deep.
“You are family, Virge,” Patton whispered, resting his chin on the other’s shoulder. “And unless you have a legitimate reason not to, you’re staying here. My family will love you, I swear,” He added quickly, knowing the other’s tendency to grow anxious around new people.
“Are you sure? I don’t want to ruin-”
“I will physically fight you,” He hissed before the other could finish, pulling out of the hug with a soft kiss to his temple. “Stay. For me?”
“Fine,” Virgil rolled his eyes, turning away in fake annoyance to pour their coffee, “For you.” He had a reputation to uphold after all, and him nearly crying was not great for it.
Just as they finished breakfast, Patton eyeing his present next to him with, again, startling resemblance to an excited child, there was a knock at the door. The roommates shared a confused glance, silently communicating that ‘no, I’m not expecting anyone’ before Patton got up to open it. He’d barely unlocked the latch when it burst open of its own accord, a loud shriek of “PATTY!” echoing through the small entryway.
“You guys are early!” Patton laughed as two small girls attempted to squeeze him to death around his torso, the pair having the same blond curls as Patton.
“These two just couldn’t wait to see you,” A woman Virgil assumed to be one of Patton’s mother’s smiled, angling above the girls to give Patton a gentle hug which he eagerly returned.
He quickly led them all inside, introducing a nearly shaking Virgil to his family. His other mom was carrying a box laden with uncooked food, and began to set it out in the small kitchen to begin preparing it. The girls, after a bit of hesitation, flocked to Virgil.
“Why’s your hair purple?” One asked, pulling herself onto Virgil’s lap. Her southern accent was just as strong as her moms’, reminding him of the accent Patton had slowly lost since moving in with him. It wasn’t gone all the way, just dimmed, but from the kitchen, he could hear his roommate talking to his moms animatedly, the accent back in all its glory.
“I drank too much grape soda,” Virgil lamented, “When I was little, I couldn’t get enough of it. And then it turned my hair purple.”
“No, it didn’t!” The girl leaning on his knee giggled.
“Are you saying I’m a liar?” He gasped, placing a hand over his heart, “How dare you!”
They both erupted into shrieking laughs, causing Patton to poke his head out of the kitchen. Virgil couldn’t help grinning widely at him as the second girl pulled herself onto his lap as well, causing Patton’s face to light up like the sun.
“Did you know Christmas is my favorite holiday?”
“Is it really? Why’s that?” Virgil asked, leaning back in his chair.
“It’s mine, too!”
“Nu uh, it’s only mine!”
“We can have the same favorite!”
“Nu uh!”
----------------------------------------------
Patton collapsed back onto the couch, groaning loudly. The tree was the only light in the darkened living room, the air still warm and smelling like the dinner they’d enjoyed hours ago. It was quiet again, his family gone back home. He’d missed them immensely, but he’d forgotten how loud they could be. His feet shifted on the floor, rustling the wrapping paper left over by his hurricane twin sisters; a mess he’d clean up tomorrow. Footsteps approached from down the hall, signalling his roommates arrival, and the speaker on the mantle started to quietly play “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas”, Frank Sinatra’s soft voice drifting through the air.
“I’m so full,” He groaned again, resting his head on the back of the couch.
“Mood,” Virgil said, dropping next to him. He didn’t need to open his eyes to know that Virgil was just as tired as him. Tired, in the best way possible.
“You’re really good with kids,” Patton noted with a smile.
“Tell anyone and they’ll never find your body,” He deadpanned and Patton snorted, before he continued, “They’re the same age as my brother.”
“Oh,” He whispered, “Are you okay?”
“Yeah, surprisingly. I miss him. A lot. But this was the best Christmas I’ve probably ever had. No homophobic family members, no shouting matches, just… family. It was nice.”
“Hard to be homophobic when you have two moms,” Patton joked, relieved that Virgil snickered.
“Probably would be, yeah.”
I’m dreaming of a white Christmas,
With every Christmas card I write,
May your days be merry and bright,
And may all your Christmas’ be white.
They sat in comfortable silence for a bit, relishing in the silence of the house. The tree sparkled, lighting up the blank walls in rainbow hues, their conglomerate mix of thrift store ornaments shifting and reflecting the light. People shouted outside, joyful noises, and kids laughed, their neighbors wrapping up their own holiday celebration.
Patton opened his eyes as he felt something placed on his lap, looking down in confusion before grinning.
“Oh my gosh, I forgot!”
Virgil smiled sheepishly, shifting his own box between his hands. “I put them into my room when your family showed up.”
“Smart move. The twins would have torn them open.” Patton dropped off the couch onto the floor, sitting cross legged and shaking with anticipation. With a laugh, Virgil joined him when he gestured to the floor in front of him. He reached up and took his keys from the mantle, slicing open the duct tape on his box before handing it to Patton to do the same.
I’m dreaming of a white Christmas,
Like the ones I used to know,
Where the treetops glisten and children listen,
To hear sleigh bells in the snow
They opened their boxes in unison, Patton gasping when he saw the item in his. He pulled out the large, black fuzzy blanket, blue paw prints the size of Patton’s palm decorating the surface. A high pitched squeal burst from his lips as he squished the blanket to his chest, shoving his face in the soft fabric.
“Virgil, look! Isn’t it-”
His words caught in his throat at the expression on Virgil’s face; one of absolute shock. He was clutching his gift in white knuckles, and Patton’s mouth went dry when he caught the distinct black heart-beat-esque lines on the purple sweater.
“Oh,” Patton whispered, both of them frozen, looking at the gift they’d bought in the other’s arms. “Oh!”
“You’re my soulmate!” They both stated at the same time, breaking off into giggles.
“I guess so,” Virgil gasped, smiling as Patton pretty much leapt into his arms, trying to maneuver his hands around the other’s shoulders while still clutching the black blanket.
“Oh my gosh, I’m so relieved! You’re aro and I’m aro and it’s not going to be awkward with someone else, and I don’t have to explain and oh my gosh this is so fantastic!”
They both dissolved into another laughing fit, Virgil finally able to wind his arms around the other and pulling him closer. The end of the song slowly dwindled down as they both untangled themselves, unable to stop grinning. There was a moment of silence in the room as Virgil picked up a shrieking Patton and dropped him onto the couch, their sides sore from laughter, and essentially settled on top of him.
“Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” filled the room with soft violin swings as the two fell into a blissful sleep, wrapped in their respective gifts, more at peace than they’d been in… who knows how long.

Sorry if I ruined your song, @dillydallydove, but Hurt/Comfort will always be my main jam (Honestly just look at my writing tag it's all angst 😂) Thanks for the prompt tho!!!! ☺️💜💜
Also tagging @thecrowslullaby because they asked nicely 💜
Cross-Posted to Ao3 here.
Here is the song.
The Vibes I got on first listen:
Driving
Post breakup, but not really a breakup
Or someone who has been away a long time
Cliche dropping the mixing bowl on hearing news
Transitional, from childhood friends to a little more
Ambiguous Relationship?
I made it Moxiety. Because I love Moxiety. Enjoy 💜💜💜
They’d had fights before, but nothing like this. Not screaming until their throats were raw. Not frantically packing and driving off. Not radio silence for a week solid.
Patton ran his hand over the friendship bracelets on his wrist, feeling the worn strings and beads. The tv was on, murmuring and blinking quietly in the sunset light leaking through the window of his first floor apartment. There was a cup of hot chocolate on the little table they called a coffee table, long gone cold. Patton wasn’t sure if he had made it within the last 24 hours or not. It was just sitting there.
Like he was.
Maybe it was himself; Virgil needed someone calm, and stable. The other man was shy, fidgety. He struggled with anxiety and depression, and Patton couldn’t heal him with hugs alone. But Virgil was worth it.
Virgil was like fresh rain to Patton. He pushed Patton’s limits but also held him when he cried. Patton had his own issues with self-worth, constantly worried that he wasn’t as valuable as he could be in a relationship, platonic or otherwise. Virgil made Patton feel protected, almost worshiped at times. Patton tried to help Virgil feel grounded, safe from the threats of the outside world. Patton wanted nothing more than for Virgil to know how beautiful his soul was.
But he had pushed it too far.
The week previous had been tense; holidays looming over their heads, the question of whether they would host a little christmas get together with their friends. The apartment may not have been glamorous, but it was theirs, together. Patton tried so hard not to go overboard, to stay within Virgil’s boundaries, and in return Virgil was willing to meet in the middle and compromise.
Patton really didn’t know where the argument had come from; something about Patton being too clingy when Virgil needed space, or Virgil being distant and unwilling to open up when he was upset.
They both said things they would regret in an instant.
The regret didn’t matter in the moment.
Virgil was suddenly throwing any clothes and personal possessions he could reach into a duffel bag, overstuffing the poor thing and stomping out the door.
The force of his slamming the door made the walls shudder, and left the door cracked open instead of catching. It had probably sat open for a while after that, while Patton stared into space around him. He wished he could reset; see where the fight had stemmed from and stop it before it started. He wished he could take back what he said. He wished Virgil was still here.
Their relationship wasn’t new, but living together was. The closeness was. Maybe Virgil wasn’t happy with how little time he spent alone now. Maybe this would be it. It wasn’t their first argument but it certainly had been their loudest.
What if it was their last?
At some point, Logan had come over, and he must have shut the door. Patton could remember the other man talking, but none of the words. Just his calming, even tone. Whatever Logan had said was probably important, but it had washed over Patton like static.
And so Patton sat in the dark, staring into nothing. Mind as blank as a fresh sheet of paper.
A sharp ring broke the silence.
Patton almost didn’t answer it, but the doorbell was being so loud, it almost hurt after so long spent in the stillness. It was probably Logan again, or Roman, coming to check on them. He wondered if they had gotten ahold of Virgil yet. He wondered if they would leave if he just didn’t move.
The bell didn’t let up, a constant, almost frantic heartbeat of noise. Burning his ears. He shook his head as if that would wake him from his own stupor, and finally stood to answer it. His legs and back protested the movement after who-knows-how-long. He waddled over to the door, unlocked the latch, and swiftly opened it.
Before he could say anything, something tackled him full speed.
Patton toppled over in an instant, unready and unable to withstand the force. As he hit the carpet, he realized the thing was taller than him, purple and black and desperately hugging onto him.
Virgil.
Virgil was sobbing into his chest, grabbing Patton so tight he felt like a child’s teddy bear during a thunderstorm. Patton wasn’t fully sure what to do with his hands, so stunned to see his partner after so long without. Virgil was muttering something over and over as well, but Patton wasn’t certain he could understand.
Finally, the spell broke, and Patton grabbed Virgil equally as tight, beginning to cry himself. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry, they both chanted, holding and rocking and shushing each other. The floor wasn’t comfortable, and Patton felt a little squished under Virgil’s taller frame, but he wouldn’t move for the world.
Virgil was finally home.
