My brain when I read two books and wants to quit my job: what if you could go back to university, it was fun right? 🤗
Me: You're not helping, shut up please.
#this is Satan himself talking to me#i don't even understand why I sometimes have these thoughts crossing my mind#university was hell#had no money#major depression and anxiety#barely survived the whole process and got my diploma#the licence diploma that I've never ever retrieved#and same for the book publishing diploma#because I was hit by the hard fact that i decided to take the less job giving direction#nobody give a fuck about literature and humanities#and for the publishing sector#it's very much closed#and i was hit by the fact that i would never get there#because there's a major money glass ceiling#like i could not just go move to Paris like the out of touch with reality teachers said#and have opportunities#so now I'm stuck with a shitty job#and even if i went back to uni what for???#like yes if I'd go to master level i would be able to specialise in what i like#which is sff#and i actually have many idea of thesis djdjdbsbsnz#but if nobody give a shit about literature in the job marketplace#let me tell you that french academia is the most snobbish elitist academia to ever exist when it comes to literature#like i can't even begin to explain#for most of them authors like Tolkien Dick Asimov or Herbert are like nothing#doesn't matter that they are literal fathers of whole genres#and idk there's now queer studies#and queer x science fiction is really an angle that could be very interesting to work on#but that doesn't change the fact that even if my fantasies i had a master or a doctorate#it would be useless because this doesn't give you a job and i don't want to be a teacher

I thought the early 2000s "strong yet naked/mostly naked woman kept in her place by stronger, bigger, beast/monster or gang of racist caricatures" trope* was known by basically everyone but I mentioned it as a criticism of this older art book I'd flipped through recently to a friend and it turns out it isn't lol Maybe I've just read too many Heavy Metal issues... It used to be HORRIBLY inescapable in any sort of mature art scene back in the day lmao
*This trope is different from the pre-2000s one because the women usually look like they COULD fight back for at least a little bit whereas the previous trope had them be completely helpless damsels in distress
#textpost#And the damn apes. Why were there so many APES in art back then#I am so TIRED OF APES#'look at my drawing isn't it so quirky and funny. i have given the sassy stylized gorilla a naked human woman and sunglasses har har'#Ngl when the NFT thing started and I saw the ape one taking off it was instantly enemy number one because I am TIRED OF APES!!!#Not that every fictional or stylized ape is bad but there is a particular way they can be drawn where it makes me roll my eyes#Those NFTs are a prime example. They were absolutely drawing on the apes I loathe when designing those#I suppose these apes are parallel to that category of 'unintelligent and crude unkept representation of the reader/artist that still-#-hooks up with the smokin hot babe with the hourglass figure' trope#Which I also loathe#Probably this doesn't make any sense lol#I don't know how many of my followers on here shovel as much of this shit into their eyeballs as I do#Unfortunately sometimes the periodicals with such tropes that I so despise also occasionally have little gems between that make up for it#Wading through the Kevin Eastman+Simon Bisley Heavy Metal pissfart era for a scrap of Moebius or something avant garde#If I wasn't working on 1000 different things I would write reviews of Heavy Metal issues from my bookshelf lol#Some of these issues are ripe vomit. I could really tear into them#Insane that they went from cutting edge of adult SFF sequential art to whatever the fuck was going on in the FAKK 2 era#Ok I need to go get ready for bed lol enjoy whatever this post turned out to be

Those Beyond The Wall
sequel/companion to The Space Between Worlds, set a decade later
character-focused sci-fi set in an area divided in two, the rich protected city on one side and everyone else in the post-apocalyptic desert
follows a woman who works under the Emperor in Ashtown, keeping the peace
when mangled bodies start showing up with seemingly no murderer, she’s tasked with finding the cause, and finds out that it’s the result of corruption spanning both cities and multiple worlds
explores oppression and messy revolution, police violence and apartheid
bi & polyamorous MC
#Those Beyond The Wall#aroaessidhe 2024 reads#space between worlds sequel!!! honestly I’m not entirely sure how I feel about it….. In general I enjoyed it and I think it had#a lot of important things to say but also maybe highlighted some weaknesses(?) in both books?#or - I guess just the fact that the sff stuff (which skews a little more magicy here) is kinda small scope relative to its potential#and more there to serve the plot and characters. Which actually maybe is the point. idk- there's def mixed reviews lol#it has a messy unlikable MC (like actually - when half the weak ass reviews are saying the MC is annoying you know they are Actually a#complex character) and some interesting relationship dynamics#it is pretty solidly a sequel - I wouldnt read this without reading TSBW#cara does show up in here& tbh her characterisation felt quite different to me? unsure how I feel about that? but maybe it's the biased POV#also to be clear: polyam MC; not a polyam romance or anything#(there's - kinda a romance? or various feelings floating around and she 'ends up' with someone. feel like i would have liked that to end#more subtley but that's probably my personal taste lol)#man some of the 1 star reviews of this are kinda.....just racist though. can we get some measured critique in here#as I said i am not entirely sure how I feel about it but not quite in a way I can articulate.... idk! i think it's worth the read tho#it's maybe one of those revolutions that feels solved a little too easily in the end - but then also is it solved or is it just that the#narrative has to end at a certain point

I got my ex (cishet man) to read gtn and one of his comments was that gideon as a character felt "a bit too much like fan service for women who like women", and i keep remembering it because its SO FUNNY as a "criticism". Like what about it??? Was it disorienting to read the female gaze for once in your life? Let us be served, haven't we suffered enough
#gideon nav#the locked tomb#gideon the ninth#i think my response at the time was 'so?' lol#this book rec was part of my effort to make him read SFF by women#i also had him read frankenstein and kindred#which to his credit he did appreciate#this comment about gideon though.

Endless list of favourite characters: VILA RESTAL (Blake's 7, Michael Keating, 1978-1981)
“Hello there. How are you? Excuse me wandering about your premises but I wonder if you can help me. I’m an escaped prisoner. I was a thief but recently I’ve become interested in sabotage, in a small way you understand, nothing too ambitious, I hate vulgarity, don’t you? Anyway, I’ve come to blow something up. What do you think will be most suitable?”

in therapy today i just talked about the dark urge and astarion and my therapist was elated about it. it was fantastic. “wow you’ve really been using this story and those characters to process things. that’s amazing!”
the era of being ashamed of my interests is over. it’s apparently Cool and Healthy to use fiction to cope. i wish i could tell fifteen year old me about this it would blow her mind
#origpost#arctic plays bg3#bad brains blogging#you’re gonna have to pry SFF from my cold dead hands because ‘this creature is not human but nonetheless a person’ is THE most#important thing ever actually#i love taking my feelings and experiences and externalising and concretising them through metaphor#my favourite thing about astarion is how he both has literal cptsd AND metaphorically through his vampirism#that fucking rules#also shoutout to another thing therapist said today:#she was originally sceptical of my potentially having autism#then she was like ‘ok you have some traits but you’re probably not diagnosable’#then today she was like ‘you make so much sense when one thinks of you through the lense of autism’#amen sister i’ve been right there with you#but now i’m getting my second assessment soon! which won’t change anything about me i am and will be ‘tism-y regardless#but it’s going to be interesting to see what happens#also i told her about my WISC scores and she was like ‘jesus christ tell them to evaluate you for adhd too’ so uhhh#they already screened me for that and i believe i tested negative but let’s see#the WISC score was why i was even referred for an assessment so

Interest check: would any of you all participate in an online queer SFF book club??
Fell & I have discussed this as an option for our (inactive & mostly empty) Discord server that we made for readers/patrons and I will actually start organizing if we get any interest!! Interact with this post or I guess just join the server now & I'll make it happen if enough people seem down :)
#I was thinking of selecting books via nomination & voting process which might be a fun way to include indie/lesser known books#Also trying to think of how to set parameters such that I don't have to read/host for books I don't like lol. We'll see!#queer sff#lgbt sff#queer fantasy#lgbt fantasy#queer sci fi#lgbt sci fi#trans fantasy#trans sci fi#queer books#lgbt books#trans books#lgbt book club#queer book club#trans book club

wip title game
rules: make a new post with the names of all the files in your wip folder, regardless of how nondescriptive of ridiculous. let people sent an ask with the title that intrigues them the most, then post a little snoppitnor tell them something about it
so @alwayskote tagged me but i hate titles so they’re usually the last thing i come up with… so most of my doc titles are boring and only there at all so i don’t have a million docs called document x”. but also the ones with titles are so old i actually procrastinated my way into a title lmao
finish what he started - commander cody smut
apex predator - john price smut (it’s actually called monster price… i need to change that whoops)
soft focus fog - benedict bridgerton series
kix x reader - what it says on the tin
ethan landry - on camera - abandoned… lmao
chaos cubed fic
worlds apart - neteyam sully series, also abandoned
NPT: @glossysoap @xxshadowbabexx @the-rain-on-kamino @cas-backwards-tie
#˚:✧。• tagged#i pwommy i’ll get back to writing sff because i love the series so far which is rare for something i’ve written#char chatter ~✧

i’m so tired of the popular writing style lately. i feel like it’s mostly sci-fi/fantasy and stuff that’s adjacent to it. yes marvel movies are the big example but other things are not excepted from this bc it’s permeated the genre so deeply
they’re written like they’re a half-comedy, and there’s a quippy one-liner on every page. doesn’t that get exhausting??
#mine#like. the irreverent sarcastic tone of voice is everywhere#noticing it specifically in a lot of sff cause that’s what i’ve been reading lately#andy weir john scalzi becky chambers#where’s that post that’s like. going back in time to kill joss whedon’s mom before she can conceive him#bc i KNOW these bitches all watched firefly#but it could also just be like. genre fiction in general. sff is really the only Genre i read bc otherwise i like lit fic and nonfiction#i did notice (and hate) this same tone in one last stop (which is the last book i can remember reading from a diff genre)#this is a draft from 2 and a half years ago but i'm still right and yknow what. send.

people often make a big deal (at least in the online circles that i move in) over book awards like the hugos and nebulas, but for me it's also very interesting to see which books stand the test of time and actually end up being remembered in the popular conscience. for example, a game of thrones by george rr martin actually didn't win the nebula award in 1997 for best sci-fi or fantasy novel published in the us that year and was instead beaten by the historical fantasy novel the moon and the sun by vonda mcintyre, which has since not really gone down as a particularly well-known book despite at the time being blurbed by a number of famous authors like robin mckinley and diana gabaldon, while a game of thrones is now one of the most famous fantasy novels ever written. furthermore, the moon and the sun was eventually adapted into a movie called the king's daughter which was filmed in 2014, locked in a studio vault for various reasons for 8 years, and then very unceremoniously released in 2022 and watched by almost no one even though it has a number of famous people in the cast (it also has a 21% on rotten tomatoes). ANYWAY this is all just to say that i was at a used bookstore when visiting my grandparents over the weekend and i found an EXTREMELY cheep and very nice hardcover first edition of the moon and the sun, so i am now determined to read the book and then watch the movie and see for myself if either of them are any good, thus satisfying my curiosity over this whole little anecdote in sff history.
#if either the book or the movie ends up being interesting enough i'm going to make my sister do a podcast episode on it#it's set in versailles which is an excellent setting for historical fantasy#fun fact: jonathan strange and mr norrell ALSO did not win the nebula which is equally crazy to me#pie says stuff#the moon and the sun#vonda mcintyre#books#the king's daughter#sorry for this long post. i just find this whole thing slightly fascinating since i'm such an sff nerd

We Are The Crisis
book two in the Convergence Saga, a contemporary fantasy/horror series
werewolves and other supernatural creatures have been revealed to the world, and the world is changing. They fight for safety and rights, but many are going missing and anti-monster militant groups are on the rise
told nonlinearly, follows a large cast of characters
community, activism & civil rights, complicated families
#we are the crisis#no gods no monsters#cadwell turnbull#aroaessidhe 2023 reads#i kinda forgot what happened in book 1 which is a me problem obv#I def lost track of some of the characters (though I think some were new haha)#however there's definitely lots of things I like about it!#I feel like it’s a bit disjointed until the very end when it brings things together in the same way as it did in book one#and reminded me about some of the cool sff things that I’d forgotten about since they’ve barely been brought up.#However I do appreciate that it is more focused on the complexity of people and activism.#It just feels like the multiverse stuff is a bit disconnected. Maybe it’ll come together better later in the series!#and one of the characters is ace though that’s not mentioned again in this book. also he is trans and has a wife who has a girlfriend#glad they're settling into their polyamory

anyway prev post real BUT also today i wore a highlighter-yellow wool top + fave everyday wool boyhoodie + baggy cargos in olive drab + stompy boots and felt extremely self-actualized. like actually there is still serious pleasure to be derived from clothes and colors even in ~boymode, it's just that (for me) the direction of it is much more aggressively opposed to traditional rules about what ""goes together"" and ""looks flattering."" like. actually the hum of tension as hues clash like lightsabers sparks joy and energy!!
#wild to think that a decade ago i was doing a fantastically charming job of tomboy femme#but like. i guess that K had to walk so this one can. do whatever they're doing. a long ground-devouring slog probably.#(as opposed to 'ground-devouring slug' which i assume features in some vintage SFF somewhere. note 2 self: check with el.)
