My greatest expectation in terms of arc this season (Siuan aside) is Nynaeve's because I'm waiting for the show to develop her story in a preventative way against the dilapidation of her thread post book 7.

One of the books most unexpected failures for me was Nynaeve's arc after she broke out of the block, as she becomes essentially other characters' powerful sidekick. Storylines that should have centered her like the Cleansing positioned her as an adjuvant, rather than a story driver. She still accomplishes great feats but her writing always feels rather external and not as involved as the introspection we get for any of the other EF5 and Elayne.

And it's so disappointing because there is no rhyme nor reason to this demotion: one minute she is on equal footing with her Two Rivers friends in ACoS, and the next book she becomes a side character plus.

It's so immensely frustrating because as many side characters in this series, she has meaty things going on later on, for example she's married to a war veteran with immense emotional baggage and my favourite bits of Lan and Nynaeve's relationship are when we see that under the marital bliss there is an unease on Nyn's side because she wasn't really equipped to handle all that come with Lan. Or later on in the series, Rand uses her on several occasions and makes her accomplice to war crimes and tortures, which as someone whose drive is healing the world must be incredibly brutal.

Yet, we don't get as much introspection about these events on Nynaeve's end, although she would be entirely legitimate in giving her perspective, particularly as they touch on different, complex sides of healing: what happens when the wound left is trauma? what constitutes mercy killing?

So if there is one arc I really need the show to properly fix, it is Nynaeve's. And that means letting her be a main character until the end.

I can see why the finale would be rushed, I did think Tanchico crew would chew through a little more plot than that, but it was absolutely amazing. Still in awe of how many threads from different books they weave together

do you have any fantasy book recommendations with main characters like daenerys?

Read Crown of Stars by Kate Elliott! It’s a very underrated series and Liath reminds me of Dany, right down to the association with fire. I would actually rec that series to anyone who likes aSoIaF; I think they have similar vibes and characterization. It does the pseudo medieval thing way more accurately too if a more realistic setting is something you’re into.

Stand up to your racist uncle instead of "keeping the peace" (peace for WHO exactly?)

Find out what abortion rights groups are ALREADY DOING in your area instead of reinventing the wheel

Join an actually inclusive church (you know, like Jesus would've wanted) and see what they're ALREADY DOING to make the world better

And for fuck's sake, stop saying "oh I don't talk about politics" - YOUR SILENCE IS POLITICAL

NEWSFLASH: You don't have to start the fucking underground railroad by yourself. That shit ALREADY EXISTS - you just never had to use it before. Lucky you. So volunteer if you're a safe person, at whatever level works for you:

Send money

Show up in person

Pack supplies

Make pamphlets

Whatever you can do

Not everything's gonna get you in the history books and you know what? IT DOESN'T FUCKING MATTER.

And here's something else that matters: Going to trauma therapy - REAL trauma therapy with a therapist informed in decolonization practices - is a RADICAL ACT. If you have the means to do it, DO IT. Healing yourself is part of the work too.

AND LISTEN UP BECAUSE THIS IS IMPORTANT: IT'S OKAY THAT IT TOOK YOU THIS LONG IT'S OKAY THAT YOU'RE STARTING SMALL IT'S OKAY THAT YOU DON'T KNOW EVERYTHING

NO ONE EVER PUNISHED THEMSELVES INTO SUCCESS.

You grew up with some racist/sexist views? Yeah, most of us did. You can't get stuck there. There's too much at stake. It's time to deconstruct. It's time to do the work.

But scrolling and sharing posts while feeling guilty? That's not the work. That's what they want you to think the work is.

Get off your phone. Talk to your neighbors. Show up at meetings. Stand up to family. THAT'S the work.
