Wheel of Time season 2 finale.. WOW
It had a much stronger ending than the previous season did & set up up so many things for the upcoming seasons. I didn't see that cliffhanger coming but hoLY SHITTT. Of course Ishamael would have a final card to play.
Is it just me who kinda wants to see flashbacks to Lanfear/Ishamael/Lews Therin as the besties that they were? Its so fascinating.
The only main gripe I had with the finale was how they reduced Nynaeve back to not being able to channel?????? Like huh????? People all around her dying, Rand is dying, and she isn't apparently angry enough to heal them????? Absolutely nonsensical. I swear I feel like they only did that to introduce Elayne cos then otherwise what was the fucking point???
Glad that Moiraine and Lan are now back to being platonic spouses. I love their relationship so much and I'm glad Lan read Moiraine because she honestly needed someone to keep it real for her; her confirming what we all knew which is that Lan is in fact the best, and most loyal & she is honoured to have a warder/friend/spouse like him!!!
Also, Mat, I may have been wrong about him. He has gone up in my estimations because FINALLY he was an active agent in his own story instead of being so passive and cowardly.
The way Renna died? Scrumdidlyumptious. I rewatched that shit like 50 times.
I gotta pour two out for my precious baby boy Hopper (Perrin wolfing out afterwards was simply divine <3) and also Ingtar (I fr was hoping he'd stick around for longer, but I should have known better than to get attached). I was also lowkey kinda sad when Ishamael got axed too, I'll miss seeing his beautiful face (but I think that was the first time he knew peace, so... I'm happy for him or whatever)
Also loved how the gang are now back together again!! That moment on the towers when they were all looking out was chilling in the best way. Everyone needs a friendship group that has each other's backs like that.
A great finish to what has been an amazing season.
8/10 for me!!!!

Okay, so
Simple, three letter, single syllable names are very rare in WoT, except for Andoran commoners
Lan Mandragoran is not an Andoran commoner
Yeah technically it's al'Lan, but the al' part is a title, not really part of his name.
The Malkieri were the last holdouts on using bynames (e.g. Jain Farstrider, Cowin Fairheart), and afaict the only Westlands culture confirmed to do so after the War of the Hundred Years, so clearly the notion of a person's name changing throughout their life was not unknown to them.
Malkier was farther north even than the rest of the Borderlands, and firmly located in the mountains, meaning it was likely cold AF in the winter and probably had a relatively high infant mortality rate.
Lan means "prized" or "beloved" in the Old Tongue
Guys, I think "Lan" is a milk name. Something you call a baby until it's old enough for a real name. Isam has an actual name, so I'd hazard they do it at a year old, but Malkieri culture being what it is, it was probably his mother's right to name him, only el'Leanna was dead, and none of the five men who made it to safety with baby Lan felt like it was their place to do so.

First time reading “The Eye of the World” by Robert Jordan!
Really shipping Lan and Nynaeve! There are so many subtle hints (that are actually really obvious) that those two like each other... Everytime there’s a scene with them I’m like
“Oh just admit it already!”
What’s the ship name?

the eye of the world: an increasingly low effort visual liveblog
(book moiraine and lan are so much more extra than their show counterparts and i’m living for it)
[Image 1: Two sketches of Moiraine, a woman with pale skin and wavy dark brown hair, from the shoulders up. In the drawing on the left she stares straight ahead while golden comic-like effects emphasize her serious face. the text below her reads, “totally ready to have a normal conversation!” In the sketch on the right, she’s looking to her upper left and wearing a dress instead of a cloak. bright blue fire surrounds her and the text above her reads, “sing of Manetheren.”
Image 2: A drawing of Egwene, who has brown skin and brown hair in a long braid. She wears a white top and a green skirt and is riding the artist’s best attempt at a horse while smiling excitedly. The text surrounding the “halo” effect around her head reads, “adventure!!” On her right, Rand is leading his own horse by the reins while looking back at her. Rand has short red hair and wears trousers with a blue tunic and green vest. He is very obviously tired and has dark circles under his grey eyes. His thought bubble reads, “how are you still awake.”
Image 3: Rand is standing to Lan’s right, trying to copy his stance. Lan has light brown skin, dark eyes, and dark hair pulled back into a topknot. He’s dressed in dark grey and blue robes and is on the brink of dramatically unsheathing his sword. Light yellow “sparkle” effects surround him. Rand, who is around the same height as Lan, also has one hand on his sword. His thought bubble says “how does he get away with all the Drama??”]

Amazon’s Wheel of Time Makes a Bold Beginning, but Will It Hold Up?
"My prevailing feeling is that I want more, right this minute, please and thank you."
If you know anything about the Wheel of Time book series (written primarily by Robert Jordan and finished by Brandon Sanderson following Jordan’s passing), you know that it’s one heck of a commitment. The 14 books total in the core series—not counting the prequel or companions—clock in at several hundred pages each, representing some of the original epic fantasy tomes lovingly referred to as…

Dumb question but what was your dream-team-cast for WOT (the one we get is *chef kiss*, but I like reading your post about dream cast in lotr and got, so here we are)
Actually, I never really had a dream team cast for WoT, because I haven't thought about it in a long time and only rediscovered it after the show came out - and then I absolutely had to go down that rabbit hole again. lol.
But I could share how I imagined them all and come up with actors that are close.
The thing is that I really think the actors nailed it all and the essence of the characters is there in their performance. I don't mind at all that they look different than the description in the books - which is honestly very vague. RJ rarely commented on skin colour iirc.
Moiraine: This is very difficult because Rosamond is so spot on. I never even pictured her with dark hair, but she's just perfect.
Lan: I didn't know Daniel Henney existed before the show, but he is just how I pictured Lan. I can't come up with anyone better.
Rand: This one is difficult because the red hair is really important. I looked up red-haired actors and apparently David Wenham is red-haired. A young David Wenham is o.k.ish, I think? I don't know if he is tall enough. Again, I love the present cast.
Mat: for some reason, Mat really has to have black hair and blue eyes, so I looked up male actors with black hair and blue eyes and Ian Somerhalder comes close.
Perrin: A young Denzil Washington, so I guess again Marcus Rutherford comes close, very close.
Egwene: Zendaya
Nynaeve: Zoe Kravitz. Actually my son had a preschool teacher who looked exactly like I pictured Nynaeve. Thick black curls in a braid, olive skin and a no-nonsense voice. lol.
Siuan Sanche: Reese Witherspoon or Emily Blunt (you know the blue-eyed stare, but I love Sophie Okonedo, because she nails the character)
Thom: Steve Carell (now with grey hair)
Min: A young Sandra Bullock could carry the boyish look I think. This is difficult for me, because I don't like the character. I know she's a fan favourite.... Sigh. I prefer not to think about her. I think the actual actress is good as well.
And now on to some of my fav book characters, some of them are Forsaken we will see (as we have seen their statuettes on the show):
Elayne, wonder girl extraordinaire, favourite princess ever: again this is difficult. I think the cast now is good, I just always pictured her with curls. Amanda Seyfried perhaps? But with more red in her hair. Or Lily James?
Lanfear: A young Vivien Leigh perhaps. She could carry how unhinged Lanfear is. Or Eva Green of Lena Headey or Gal Gadot (a girl can dream....)
Moghedien: I actually think Maisie Williams a bit older would be perfect
Asmodean: A young Keanu Reeves (I mean I somehow read over the fact that RJ describes Asmo as middle-aged and in my head he looks like 25 perhaps), Tom Ellis would be great as well.
Ishamael: Keanu Reeves again.
That's it for now.

Characters who had the best scenes to help them flesh them out despite the changes (season 1):
Rand: (dishonorable mention: episode 2)
Nynaeve: (dishonorable mention: episode 4 and she sleeping with Lan)
Liandrin (she is so OVER the top just like the original, I love it!) (Season 2 ruined it)
Alana
Min
Characters who's fleshing out scenes were improved:
Logain
Characters who are in the middle:
Mat, Egwene, Lan, Loial, Tam (I call this level "I don't have enough information to tell who this person is yet" or "So many changes I don't know if they are the same character anymore" )
A lower level:
Moiraine: ( she was dumbed down, praying that season 2 reveals she has been fooling everyone around her (season 2: na mi cielo) (still the dialogue needs to get better with this "twisting the truth" thing instead of having her refusing to speak like a pouting five year old, it just makes her look stupid!! Especially if she is talking to country bumpkin like Rand! Arhghhhh!!!! ),
Perrin :(
Siuan: (wth was that authoritarian Creonte speech she gives to Moiraine??? That's something that seems more proper from Elaida... Or Agent Smith... Same her with Logain. Siuan has always been a harsh woman, but never cruel, yet is hard to difference her from the Reds in that scene. (Season 2: Oh boy she got even worse!)
The "Dark One" : (was that an Alien in the first episodes????)
Characters I downright don't recognize:
Lord Agelmar, Lady Amalisa, Eamon Valda, the Cauthon's, Padan Fain, Aram
Tumblr media
This is for season 1 only, if I had to do it now... Let's see 🤔
I think I'll have Liandrin stepping down to "barely recognize", Min to "barely recognize" (because of the darkfriend shit) Nynaeve to "acceptable" (lol) , Lan to "who is this?" ... And that's it 🤷 Mat saw some improvement thanks to the actor but again the scripts are the problem, they don't let the boys do anything! 😒 Same with Rand, is thanks to Josha he maintains his position.

Loial just blinked in confusion. “Of course I know. You two practically announced it to the world. Or rather the Women’s Apartments, but that was good as, things being as they are in Mahfal Dedaranel.”
“What in the name of the Light are you talking about?” Mat snapped so loud that the soldiers ahead of them turned, but Mat did not care, twisting in his saddle to stare up at Loial.
Loial shifted uncomfortably atop his Dhurin, ears twitching. “…You claimed the right of being Rand’s Heartsworn. Cue’vin.”
Mat nodded slowly. That was the word Lan had told him to use: Heartsworn, along with the formal phrasing he had given. He had assumed it had been some sort of statement that he was Rand’s armsman or bodyguard or some such. But now hearing it spoken back to him in the Old Tongue made his stomach sink. That part of him capable of understanding these things, that quiet swell of memory in the back of his mind, told him Cue’vin was stronger than that. Implied more. But what exactly eluded him.
Loail kept right on. “I know the tradition is not really recognized much in the south anymore, and has not been since oh, the War of the Hundred Years? But the Borderlands keep many of the old ways that others have forgotten or lost, and it makes sense of course, that you still retain it- it was Manatheren that began the tradition after all. After the Breaking of the World, when it really seemed like human kind might be driven to extinction, there was a great pressure in many of the burdening survivors for humans to continue their family lines, for the good of the species, even at the cost individuals who…ah….could not love partners with whom traditional reproduction was possible.” Loial’s ears were twitching wildly now, and his eyebrows had drawn down in embarrassment. Mat just stared at him, and he kept going.
“It was Manatheren that first formaly reconigzed the bond between two persons of the same gender, or rather, between Prince Akiaean al Pelen, who was the greatest warrior of his time, and Paedrig al Minias advisor and companion, but within two hundered years almost every nation acknowledge the bond between two persons of the same sex, to the point that when Queen Amaresu of Almoren refused to marry as it would betray her oaths of devotion to her own Cue’vin, the Elmrian, the nobility of Almoren where forced to accepther decision. By the time of the Trolloc Wars, Devotion of the Spear and the Dawn, a collection of stories detailing relationships between Cue’vin, was so popular that they had gained something of a mythology around them, and were widely culturally recognized, or at least respected and honored. Few copies remains of it however: I read at the Royal Library at Cairhien, which of course makes sense as Almoren would one day become Cairhien, though few remember that Amaersu as more legend there, and none realize how much Tova, and now Cairhien owe to her. The Trolloc Wars are to blame I am afraid, so much was destroyed during the ravagining of the Shadow, and afterwards there was a shift away from viewing Cue’vin as a distinct relationship from the bond between men and women, so the stories lost of their importance, especially in the South, though in the Borderlands-“
“Loial.” Mat interrupted, voice he knew, deceptively calm. “Are you telling me, that everyone thinks that Rand and are….Married?”
Loail blinked at him. “Well. No. Not exactly. But…not not exactly that either.”
Mat shook with rage. All that effort into sneaking around and hiding and keeping their relationship private and Light- everyone knew! And thought-
Mat felt the profound urge to scream. And to strangle Lan Mandragoran with his bare hands.
