I will hold vigil on this spot in Mare Crisium to watch humanity's continued journey to the stars.

Here, I will outlast your mightiest rivers, your tallest mountains, and perhaps even your species as we know it.

But it is remarkable that a species might be outlasted by its own ingenuity.

Here lies Blue Ghost, a testament to the team who, with the loving support of their families and friends, built and operated this machine and its payloads,

to push the capabilities and knowledge of humanity one small step further.

Or, hi we like talking about how our own collective works but that feels like tmi for most people so here we're talking about Pure Vanilla's system in a WIP AU :D

The Vanilla Collective, as they like to call themselves, formed due to the general trauma they experienced as a child soldier, under both Dark Enchantress and Shadow Milk. All the more solid headmates are various incarnations of Pure Vanilla himself. They do have a few non-Vanilla based headmates, but they aren't as complete, being less 'solid', for lack of a better term.

Nobody else is aware of them being plural, and they don't really care either way. Vanilla is glad that it means nobody is giving them special treatment, with Recluse arguing that at the very least, Golden Cheese should know, as she's the only Ancient they're traveling with.

While there's no physical changes when somebody else takes over front, several of them have small ways of finding comfort. Recluse's eyes tend to darken slightly, and he'll pull out a cape similar to the one he wears in canon. Healer will wrap bandages over his eyes, finding comfort in the feeling, while Art will leave the right eye exposed, but completely covers the left one.

Vanilla/Vil - The 'host' and the one who primary fronts. He's vaguely aware of a lot of the things the others remember, due to how rare it is for anyone other then him to front alone. He's usually more quiet, yet supportive. He's the one driving them to seek out answers with Golden Cheese, much to Recluse's annoyance. The 'good tempered one', although he has a secret gremlin streak that only the Ancients and his headmates know about.

Truthless Recluse/Recluse - Primarily functions in a protector-like role. He tries to keep most of the traumatic memories away from the majority of the collective, with only Art and Vil also having memories of certain traumatic periods. Generally more harsh to those who aren't part of the collective, but has a good heart. The most serious of the group, but will occasionally crack and join the chaos.

Healer - The only one in the primary fronter trio without any specific memories of the trauma, as this is simply against what they are here to be. They tend to take over front when Vanilla is doing badly and there's no active threat. The only time they've been forced to stay alone in front was under Dark Enchantress, which ended up with them not having any memories of that period of time anyways, due to Art forming. The most upbeat besides Lamb, and the most chaotic by a long shot. Very eager to hit somebody will his staff.

Artificial Vanilla/Art - A headmate split from Healer, during the time Healer got frontstuck. Art has most of the memories of this time, and is more closed off. They dislike fronting, as the main experience they have is one of the worst times the collective experienced. In the rare moments they co-front, the entire front looses the ability to see out of their left eye, even though that wound has been healed on the body. As they are primarily based off Healer, they retain his more chaotic nature, but is more subdued.

Lamb - A little, he's the memory of who Pure Vanilla was before everything went to shit. He's usually kept away from front, due to their less then ideal situation. Healer has taken on a vaguely parental role to Lamb, taking care of him in the headspace. Lamb is typically regarded as the 'small fragment of innocence' the system still has, leading to everyone trying to keep him safe at all costs. The most upbeat, and likes wandering around the enchanted forests and flower fields of the headspace!

Lily/Gold/Blizzard/Holly - a quartet of less 'solid' headmates, all child versions of the other Ancients. The term 'fragments' could be used to describe them, but Lamb calls them Wisps. They can usually be found wandering the same forest and gardens that Lamb calls home, and the five of them stick together most of the time. They tend to appear more spirit-like, with paler colors and bright blue/white mist obscures their faces and follows them around. Overall much more happy then the rest of the system, partly due to the fact that they aren't formed enough to front.

The Herd + Cream - not exactly headmates, per say, but animals that reside within the headspace. Cream is a Cakehound that Vanilla used to have under the Witches. Art can't stand to look at her without needing to step away to cry. Healer, on the other hand, adores her despite not remembering her that much. The Herd, as they're affectionately called, is a flock of sheep that Lamb tends to. Their wool is light blue, with soft swirls of white. They're very affectionate, and will often follow Lamb around without the little even noticing!

No but let’s talk about the whole Apokalips thing in Our Worlds At War. Young Justice 1:35–37, Superboy 1:91, Impulse 1:89.

Kon really, really screwed up. His impulsive and insubordinate actions, expressly against Robin’s orders and in full opposition to the rescue mission they were engaged on, led directly to:

the permanent death of one team member (Slobo is not Lil Lobo even if he does have his memories, and neither are any of the other regenerated Lobos, most of whom also die; original Lobo remains dead)

the partial death of another (Bart is in a coma for over a week after experiencing the death of his speedforce duplicate)

the start of Greta’s corruption arc via Darkseid

and the torture and thorough traumatisation of the rest of team (they are held in VR worlds where they are forced to live through the deaths of their loved ones and their own deaths, repeatedly).

Tim leaves Young Justice over this. Bart stops being a hero altogether for a while.

And we never see Kon apologise.

Okay so yes he acknowledges to himself he is entirely at fault for this. He spends a whole issue agonising over what he’s done and yes, he resolves to apologise to Robin.

But he never does. He gets distracted by some fallout from the war and by Joker’s Last Laugh. Tim gets involved again in World Without Young Justice, when reality has been altered and none of them are who they should be.

And then after that, Tim, who is relieved that his identity has been revealed (something he wanted to do long ago) in a way that he couldn’t control or be blamed for, asks to rejoin the team.

And.

Kon and Cassie do this:

(I’m not blaming Snapper, Ray, or Slobo, none of whom were there when this went down even if Slobo does have the memories of it. They are just following Kon and Cassie’s cues.)

And Tim reacts like this:

Which is not the reaction of someone who has already received a heartfelt apology.

And yes, then they hug and welcome Tim back into the team. But I think Tim ends up fully internalising that his leadership (and his refusal to share his identity, like they have any right to it) is to blame for the whole debacle. And Kon lets him go on thinking that.

OLNF Week Day 5: Sci-fi

these two are on their first mission on earth to conduct research on the local environment. they’re not supposed to interact with the humans but they’re just so fascinating. they can’t help it if they watch the locals from afar (especially two particularly interesting individuals) and are incidentally spotted…. oops.

nadine and cheyomi panic at first thinking they blew their mission but to their surprise, the two humans approach them. they declare a new side mission! observe (befriend) the two humans!

arthur finally trusting the drifter enough to let them pilot him and they load him up with so many mods he goes in, rips apart half a dozen dudes from across the block with just a few swings of his sword, and comes back slightly shellshocked while aoi gets dragged off to do the exact same thing. is really fucking funny to think about.

“This Planet Needs a Name” is another fun one where the premise is fantastic and then the execution completely falls on its face.

TPNaN is the story of a cryo-ship launched from a dying Earth to try to re-populate humanity on another planet, out of the fear that Earth is not going to be habitable for much longer. It’s a one-way trip. The people who volunteered for this mission can never go back. It’s unclear if, when they wake up, there even will even be an Earth in any meaningful manner anymore. They’re going out of any reasonable communication range; they’ll never know.

This ship is flying to a distant, selected planet with a compatible atmosphere for humans. Aside from the atmosphere, though, it’s expected to be a bare lifeless rock. The core crew of seven are awoken from cryo-sleep once they arrive, preparing to spend the next decades terraforming the planet to meet human needs, and only then wake up the ten thousand humans in cold sleep below to have a new planet to live on.

But when they arrive at the planet, when the crew wake up… it’s not a lifeless rock at all. It’s a planet with a complex, vibrant, living ecosystem, full of complex, vibrant, living beings.

This is a GREAT setup. What a difficult story there is here about hope and horror, wonder and fear, trauma and duty, the realization that you’ve committed the rest of your life to a plan that’s been blown out of the water, that your responsibility to the people in your hold cannot be your only responsibility anymore, that you have so much to learn about this place and you can’t just change it to your will, it already exists. What is your duty to the people you brought with you for a promise of a new, better life, vs. your responsibility to the forests, the oceans, the animals, the whales and the dragons, that already live here? What do you do now when this is not what you planned for at all?

And TPNaN answers these questions by going :) it’s fine :) the fact that it’s already ready for them is awesome and great :) they’ll just terraform a LITTLE bit of the planet :) just enough for a human city :) they all compromise very quickly on this plan :) every conflict is resolved quickly and easily by being nice to each other :) these people do not owe jack squat to anything that already lives here and they are perfectly in their right to treat them like wild animals, curiosities at best and threats that need to be fought off at worst :) they never ever once wonder about their responsibility to learn about this place before they plop down and start terraforming it :) this is a wonderful gift just for them :) this planet needs a name. nobody ever once even slightly wonders if the inhabitants of this planet have a name for it. They’re not people after all

(when they learn that oops these native inhabitants are conscious, thinking people, this prompts a reckoning from nobody because hey look they’re friendly and happy to help)
