sure, "I'm part of this marginalized group that I'm writing about" isn't a get out of jail free card for all bigotry, but if someone says "I'm portraying an exact experience I've had, this literally happened to me" and your response is "okayyy but think of the optics of showing that that happens? maybe keep that to yourself?" it might be time to reconsider your approach.

James Buchanan Barnes, who actually suffers from long term affects of the chair. Bucky Barnes, who struggles with names. Bucky, who can only properly remember Steve's name.
Bucky, who called Tony Bologna on accident, because he knows it's a word but doesn't know what it means sometimes, and it sounds like Tony. Or macaroni, which results in the Avengers giving him funny nicknames because no one wants Bucky to feel bad about it.
Bucky, who calls Sam Ham, or Pam depending on the day. Sam, who laughs and corrects him softly, he doesn't really care much and he answers to either as long as Bucky is saying it.
Bucky, who calls all of the Avengers some slightly to the left version of their actually names, but none of the Avengers, besides Tony, can really bring them selves to be mad because Bucky at the end of the day is remembering.

no but think about the Loki from Thor. from Avengers. the fact that he’s fighting for something good that he believes in means so much. the fact that he can sit there and say he just wants his friends back. these friends. the ones who see him for him. who don’t judge him. who he feels like he BELONGS with.
when has Loki ever felt like he belongs anywhere? he’s always been the outsider, the outcast, the villain. at the TVA he has felt appreciated and accepted. no one is singling him out or giving him a hard time for being himself. he FITS. he has come so so far. and shipping aside, the main reason for that is Mobius. someone who has seen every dark crevice of his life and his bad choices and his darkest moments and treated him with compassion and understanding.
the orphaned, abandoned, misunderstood villain has been able to write his own story because one ordinary man believed in him.

I think Nico's ability to survive is less so about his will to live and more so about his refusal (less so personal and more so narrative-wise) to die. Nico, for the lack of a better word, is like a cockroach: you cannot kill him in a way that matters so he survives and keeps haunting the scene.
There was once a marvelous post on Nico's function as a narrative tool and it was so beautifully pointed out that he's a near-omniscient deus ex machina (to simplify) which cannot be overlooked when characterizing him. Nico carries so much narrative weight on his back (which arguably could be an example of either good or bad writing depending on your perspective) that he cannot just go and die.
His road towards healing (though definitely not walked alone/individually) is his own, that's his choice to make as a character, but his disposition as a guy that perseveres resides more within his function, in my opinion.
He's not the tragic prince doomed for self-destruction people often draw him out to be but his capacity for survival is also not a product of his continuous work as a character, at least not just that — but is rather a result of his narrative function. Simply saying, you cannot, narratively, kill off Nico di Angelo.

Tony coaching 3-yo-Morgan how to handle her big feelings after a tantrum, while Peter watches.
Tony: It’s okay to feel angry, Morgan. We all feel angry sometimes. But do we smash our water bottles on the item or person that made us angry? No, we don’t! Now, remember how we spoke about blowing out our finger-candles when we feel mad to help us feel calmer?
Morgan: Daddy, that’s stupid
Harley: Yo, tell him, girl. We're not blowing out finger-candles when we're angry. We flip off fingers!
Tony: * death glare at Harley before turning back to Morgan *
Baby, we don't say stupid! Stupid is a Harley word. Can you think of a mommy word to use instead?
Morgan: *scrunching up her nose in thought* The one mommy uses when you and Petey and Harley make something essplode in the lab…
Harley:
Tony:
Peter:
Morgan: Uhm… Mo… Mormonic!
Peter: *snickers*
Harley: * spurts out his red bull laughing *
Tony: *fighting to keep a straight face* “I think it’s Bluey time!”
Morgan: Yaaaay! Bluey!
Peter: I think you handled that very well!
Tony: And I think you’ll end up on manual dishwashing duty, if you don’t fix your face!
Peter: Nuh, I gotta go. Take it out on Harley.
Harley: *flips Peter off, still coughing*
Tony: I'm too old for this sh...poo.
Peter: See you later. And don’t let the kid’s brain entirely melt with the blue horror show. You know it only gives her torture ideas!
Tony: Beat it, webhead!
Harley: *still coughing up his lungs*
Tony: * to Morgan, sitting next to her to watch Bluey * What is your brother talking about, nano-hulk? Bluey rocks!
Morgan: * evil toothy grin * I wanna play mount mumanddad!
Harley: Yaaaay!
Tony: * whimpers *

Yknow that one scene from ‘Into the Woods’ where the Baker tries to steal Little Red’s cloak and she just screams until he gives it back?
Yeah uh
That’s the energy that I want whenever an adult tries to take away Billy’s magic as the Champion.
Like, sure, they could not care less about stealing away a key part of this kids life.
But making a child scream?
That means their in the wronggggg
Ughhhh guess they have to give it backkkkkk
Stop crying kid it was no big deal
