I really like fanfiction as a writing exercise sometimes because it allows me to practice certain skills without having to take the time to build a character and world from scratch. I love doing that, but it's a lot of work and takes a lot of time, especially for me because I have terrible perfectionism that I'm constantly struggling to overcome to write anything. With fanfiction I don't have to get bogged down in those details. It's a nice way to practice things like dialogue, action, even symbolism and imagery and stuff like that. It's kind of the other side of the coin of worldbuilding and character creation that don't go anywhere. It's an exercise for a different set of skills. It's not uncommon in visual art to try to copy a style or even copy an entire work as an exercise because you get to practice the technique and learn about some different styles as you develop your own. If I'm going to actually write original fiction I don't approach it the same way as fanfiction, because it's a different thing, but I can apply some of the skills I practice writing fanfiction. And it's also totally fine to just write fanfiction for fun without any aspirations to writing original fiction.
I also agree with you about not going over too much from canon. Good fic is often not accessible to people who aren't familiar with the source, because that's not the audience. A lot of those examples of "fic so good I loved it even though I didn't know the source at all" are actually not very good fic, nor do they establish the characters, they're just written in a style where characterization is irrelevant. That can be because certain blobo archetypes pop up again and again across fandoms so a reader who is familiar with fandom in general will easily recognize them (if you know what "the dynamic" is you may be entitled to financial compensation) which is actually not flattering to how fandoms engage with characters, lol. I think in most cases it's because those fics tend to be heavy on the smut and characterization is often irrelevant in those cases. You don't need to know a lot about the characters or the world they're from to enjoy them having hot hot sex.
I actually hate it when fic spends too long going over information from the source material. Like you said, it's redundant and boring. This is especially true in the era of online fandom when everyone has easy access to the source material and summaries of it. I actually used to see the opposite of what OP is describing on fanfiction.net around 2009-10, where too many fics introduced main characters as if we'd never met them before. It was typically done in the same style as the YA books of the period, because that's what the teenagers writing them were reading so that's what they were most heavily influenced by. It was annoying at the time but honestly I think it's way better than fanfiction writers only reading and being influenced by other fanfiction.
This is also what's behind the phenomenon I like to call "good writing, bad fanfiction" which is when a fic is genuinely very well-crafted but is just bad at being fanfiction because it's so far removed from the source material. This is true of most long elaborate AU fics I've read, but it happens with fics that aren't extreme AUs too, because the tone and/or characterization just don't fit. Sometimes I think writers get so comfortable with a fandom community that they kind of box themselves into writing fic instead of letting themselves fully explore the creativity of some of their ideas.
So I have nothing against fan fiction, I've even done some of it at times.
but I think its important to realize it teaches writers bad habits, namely, when you're writing with established characters you don't have to introduce them, flush them out, characterize them (as much) because that work has already been done, the reader already knows and likes the character thats why they're here for more of a character someone else established.
which is fine, again, totally fine. However, I've noticed more and more in fiction I pick up lately characters seeming, undercooked, and with other stylistic tropes it really seems to be with authors who started off in Fan Fiction.
I do think Fan Fiction is a good starting point for getting an audience and getting feed back and building your confidence, but you have to realize that like there are some things in original work that aren't in fan fiction so you're not practicing them when you write fan fiction.

Alright folks, here we have yet more evidence that 7m7n7 is a completely unhinged freak show of epic proportions. They don't even deny the fact that they're the one sending my and of course numerous other Levi blogs the literal most vile shit imaginable while hiding behind anon, accusing me of being a "misogynistic man" while calling me a "cunt" and claiming to be a straight woman while also calling me a "fag", and yet they somehow think this is a win for them. Anyway, they've really stepped in it now. They flat out admit in the tags of one of the screenshots that they want to send me and others death threats. I'm posting this so everyone can be aware of who this person is and how they operate. I'll also be sending all of this to the admins on here. They have numerous other accounts here on tumblr, which is how they kept sending me anon hate, despite me blocking this particular account and several others. It's beyond amusing how they accuse me of being the one to "start shit" and of being "obsessed" when they confess to having a post "about me" that they've had saved in their drafts for months, lol, and when they're the one that's been attempting to harass me for months on end, literally stalking me on tumblr, on twitter (the one time I went on there to participate in a Levi themed event) and on a03, lol. Anyway, have a gander folks, and remember, if we all report this lunatic to admin, it's 100% possible to get them banned.
And by the way @7m7n7, just you wait. There's plenty of evidence of the shit you've said about Levi and Eren on twitter. It's all going to come to light, soon enough. Further, if you think I blocked you because I can't "counter" the pure bullshit you spew, then you're even dumber than I realized. I blocked you because I don't have the time to get into back and forth exchanges with a person who's intellectual capacity is equivalent to a puddle of piss and who displays the kind of unhinged, obsessive, hateful and deviant paranoia that you do. I don't have to defend or explain why I have no interest in talking to or reading the drivel of someone who makes a habit of sending people death threats, threatening to doxx people, calling people racist, misogynistic, homophobic and ableist slurs, and who regularly tells anyone who disagrees with their blatantly repulsive takes that they should kill themselves. That's why I blocked you. You're a worthless, vile, disgusting garbage dump of a human being and you aren't worth my or anyone else's time. I would rather get a hole drilled into my skull than have to actually converse with you. It would be a more productive use of my time.
If anyone wants to actually see the exchange we had on a03, too, instead of taking this moron's word for what I supposedly did and didn't say, here's a link. Just scroll down to the comments section and have a look:
https://archiveofourown.org/works/37903426/chapters/94653316
By the way, I have zero issue with "dom Levi". People can ship Levi in whatever ways they please, it's no skin off my back.
What I have an issue with is people portraying Levi as some psychopathic, pedophilic rapist, sullying his character with these absurdist takes, and insisting it's "canon", and then trying to harass, threaten and bully you non-stop on anon in an attempt to drive you from the fandom simply for pushing back on this frankly repulsive mischaracterization by talking about Levi's core characteristics of compassion, empathy and kindness.
And just to address their asinine accusation about me "getting off" on the idea of Levi being raped or tortured, anyone who knows me on here, and particularly, anyone who's actually read my work, will know that I never portray or frame these fictional scenarios in a light meant to titillate or fetishize said scenarios. I write about them within the context of exploring and understanding the brutal and tragic reality of physical, mental, emotional and sexual abuse, in an attempt to engender a greater understanding and compassion in my readers for victims of these crimes. I never write smut which depicts rape fantasies or in any way romanticizes or glamorizes the act of rape. This bozo looks at my tags and just assumes I'm writing smut. That never has been and never will be what I do with these particular issues or subject matter.

You asked for examples where Dream was being mysogenistic.
First I'm going to quickly point out the same thing Tubbo did. Every single accusation Dream slung at a guy that wasn't a strange "example" that he used Tubbo for was really well built up and based on actual things that happened or that Dream at least claimed certainly happened.
Every single accusation he aimed at a woman, that wasn't the case. He accused HannahxxRose of starting a rumour despite not being certain in the slightest. He claimed Aimsey was "behind" the Caiti thing despite having no proof or reason to believe that.
Then I'm just going to point out the fact that he never once addressed the rampant misogyny in the DSMP fandom, including when his own fans absolutely went insane insulting Niki Nihachu because she was frustrated with her own performance in MCC while she was on Dreams team. (I should note, both Tommy and Tubbo HAVE addressed the misogyny in the fandom multiple times)
But there's more you mentioned, for example that you don't believe he's manipulative. During his stream, Dream cut over every single time Tubbo gave him the benefit of the doubt, defended Dream, or said that he didn't agree with Tommy's words. He actively skipped all those segments and then lied about what Tubbo said there. He then only showed the moments where Tubbo was critical of Dream without the context of WHY Tubbo said Dream was in the wrong, and Dream played the victim. Then he continued to undermine all of Tubbo's points by saying he was sure Tubbo only thought that because he was mislead by "Tommy or the brighton friend group" (Tubbo assumed it was Harry at first Dream was aiming at, but considering the earlier mentioned accusations at Aimsey, I think it might've been them that Dream was blaming). These are the most basic manipulative framing tactics that exist; cutting people's words out of context, and then use that lack of context to make it seem like they have no basis and they don't know what they're talking about.
He also managed to perfectly skip every part where Tubbo did say he wasn't sure/it was speculation, and then showed those parts as if Tubbo was sure and was speaking with his full chest. Again; taking words out of context to spin a tale in which Dream was the only victim and Tubbo was attacking him.
Then on to the 3rd and final topic; the Cantu stuff. Tubbo actually specifically made a whole point about that it was not okay that Cantu did that stuff, (and gave corrections later where needed; he was unsure about how the video had gotten publicized but he immediately apologized for not fully understanding the situation once he got context and gave his revised opinion based on his new information) but how reclaiming slurs worked, and he also very specifically said something along the lines of "I don't think anyone in the brighton friend group celebrated Cantu saying a slur to you. I don't think that happened. If it did, and I missed it, it probably wasn't them celebrating that you got called a slur, but just that they hate you."
Dream once again pulled that out of context and only showed the "they hate you part" and not the entire section before that where Tubbo specifically said he was pretty sure that never happened, but he was just giving Dream the benefit of the doubt and that he could've missed something.
This all is why people consider him manipulative. He takes out context, talks around the context with irrelevant details for ages, and then barely addressed the actual point with completely misleading framing. The entire time. Every time.
Wow. Okay anon I'm not sure I want so answer that, but I am thinking about it. Let me just say first and foremost.
You are literally wrong about both of your first points. Dream brought up Hannah because he confused her with someone else, in the exact same way he confused Ludwig for someone else in the same stream.
What he says about Aimsey is very specifically that he had a call with Tubbo, and Tubbo said that he didn't like Dream because when Aimsey asked him about the accusations they were banned from the discord. This did not happen. Dream then says that he thought this meant Aimsey was the one spreading rumors, but he found out that wasn't the case when Aimsey later reached out to talk about it and told Dream they didn't know where the rumor had come from.
He calls out how he can also have misconceptions about other creators based on assumptions, and this is a problem that affects community at large, not just himself.
Caiti was not brought up at any moment during this stream. Please do not try to bring her up as a sacrificial lamb for your point, she deserves better then that.
Neither or these things are misogynistic. Even if he had accused Hannah with more then a passing mention it would not be misogynistic, it would just be wrong. Referencing a woman or and afab person is not misogynistic. Hannah and Aimsey were not referenced any different then any of the male creators that were mentioned in the same stream.
I cannot, physically, go back and scour every single live, video, tweet and interview to see if Dream ever mentioned the misogyny in the fandom or larger streaming community during the dsmp, because I do not remember whether or not it happened. I'll be honest, you comparing Tommy, who made jokes about drugging and raping women, as a good example is already enough.
I did not watch Tubbo's stream. I'm being completely honest when I say that, that's why I haven't commented on it, because at no point I opened this for a discussion or a moderation, I opened it as a check for anyone who couldn't or wouldn't watch Dream's original stream.
Manipulation is communication. There is no way to communicate with someone else without manipulating them. You can not like that Dream went through Tubbo's stream in clips instead of playing all of it and reacting to it on a more classic form. This does not make Dream evil or a mastermind who's trying to fool you, this makes it so you did not like the way he communicated. That is a fair criticism to have.
As a more lighthearted note, I will say that if we got a 3 hour stream out of those clips then Dream would still be streaming now if he had played the whole thing /j
What Tubbo said is equally fucked up, even he he says he's unsure whether or not his friends were celebrating it. Because the point Dream was making was not about them, but about how the internet at large cheered for him being assaulted. "They celebrated because they hate you" is still equally wrong.
Because what is being said is that the action doesn't matter. It does not matter if Cantu assaulted him because I do not like him. This is a bad thing to belive. That violence is righteous because it is against an other.
If I name absolutely any group or people who this has been used against we would get into hate crimes. I cannot be more serious when I say that "Violence against the Other is justified because they are Bad and we are Good" is just facism. This is what Tubbo is implying here, not against his friend group but about the wider internet who celebrated a hate crime. The longer context does not change what is being said.
I am sorry anon, but when we have the context that this is Dream speaking, it makes a lot of sense that he would try to give as much context as possible. It's not evil or manipulative of him to speak a certain way, trying to frame his explanations nothing but manipulation is disingenuous.

Honestly, I’ve always struggled to get a clear understanding of both Sonic and Silver’s personalities and characterization since a lot of the fandom focuses on the new stuff and not the old, more accurate stuff. But going through your blog and reading your analysis’ for both Sonic and Silver is like taking a breath a fresh air because you actually took time to properly analyze the characters, and I highly respect you for that. When I was reading IDW I always felt like there was something off about Silver because he kept on getting pushed and shoved everywhere and it just made me upset, you saying that old game Silver would actually throw hands made me realize that a lot of the characters in IDW don’t feel like themselves which made drop the comics. Same with Prime, I didn’t like Sonic at all since he was practically RUSHING to get home when in reality I feel like he would have stayed behind in order to save the worlds.
Overall, I love your opinions on modern and old Sonic and Silver it really helps me get a solid understanding of the two since I dearly ship them and want to genuinely learn more about the two.
(Also, no hate or grudges to the people who actually do enjoy IDW and/or Prime)
Thank you for the kind words and I'm glad I could help you understand more about the characters! 😊 I don't expect everyone to agree with my analysis, I only share my opinions and why. So people who appreciate what I have to say is more than what I could ask for!
Very happy to be spreading the rude Silver agenda - I have beef with IDW Silver specifically because I think he's one of the driving forces of people perceiving him to be a pushover or overly nice when he isn't that way at all. Silver can be aggressive as hell and I think people underestimate him a lot. I have a lot of thoughts about IDW Sonic as well and how he's portrayed as being egotistical when that's actually a very common misconception of Sonic's character.
Definitely agree with you about Sonic rushing to get home - in the storybook games when Sonic is whisked into another world, he's far more focused on helping out the people there. It's like returning home doesn't even cross his mind. Once he's done with that, then he returns home.
Sonic and Silver are my favourites and I love seeing them in-character! I'm glad that you feel the same! 🤍💙

I hate liking a show enough to want to find media on it, but the "media" is so alienating and hostile that it also kinda makes me not want to watch the show.

One major factor missing from most debates on Arya and Lyanna's beauty is that they're being judged by their society's extremely patriarchal values. In both looks and personality, that context is essential to understanding how others perceive them. George explores the misogyny experienced by non-conforming women, especially with Arya, and it's interesting how he plays with that regarding their physical beauty.
Her mother used to say she could be pretty if she would just wash and brush her hair and take more care with her dress, the way her sister did. (The Blind Girl, ADWD) "You never knew Lyanna as I did, Robert," Ned told him. "You saw her beauty, but not the iron underneath. She would have told you that you have no business in the melee." (Eddard VII, AGOT)
These two quotes offer a nice summation of this idea. With Arya, her supposed lack of beauty is defined by her being a non-conforming wild child. Her hair is messy, her face is dirty, and she's often in "lower class" clothing while engaging in unladylike activities. None of this says anything about her physical beauty but it tells us everything about how she's perceived. Arya could be pretty...If she conforms to society's standards for a highborn Lady. With Lyanna, however, we get the opposite. Where Arya is judged based on her personality, Robert's romanticization of Lyanna is rooted solely in her looks. He doesn't know anything about the person she really was. There is an assumption that, because she looked a certain way, her personality must fit and Robert imagines her much softer and more passive than she actually was.
That Arya isn't pretty or Lyanna wasn't wild are two perceptions that George specifically pushes back against. This is where people miss the brilliance of them being linked as literary mirrors; it is largely about us learning more about Lyanna, but it touches on more than that. The significance of them being written as wild, willful, and with their own beauty is that George isn't writing his female characters around patriarchal expectations. When people debate their beauty, that's often the trapping they fall into. Beauty and non-conformity are treated as mutually exclusive factors when the story itself never makes that point; this is also the logic that leads people to the (incorrect) conclusion that Lyanna and Arya aren't meant to be similar. Arya's self-esteem issues around her looks and being a Lady make this a topic certain to be addressed in the future; George has made it a part of the story. The conclusion shouldn't be that "looks don't matter", but that looks aren't indicative of a character's value, personality, or morality.

Thinking about that time when a popular artist was a prick to me personally (claimed that I "baited" them for a conflict when all I did was pointing out something in lore contradicting their claim, without any rudeness or condescension, and basically told me to go hang out with other autists instead of bothering them) but the reason I blocked them was not that, it was the fact that they've admitted on not even caring about the source material and just using scraps from it to do their own thing. Priorities hfngkfngj
#fandomry rambles#I can excuse asserting ego at my expense and acting as though my knowledge of lore is an offence but-#-I draw the line at taking advantage of an IP to get attention easier instead of 'just making an OC'#there is a line between creative liberties and not caring about source material!!! they are not the same thing!#and FANdoms are places for FANs of something! not for some pricks to advertise themselves!#again I just pointed out something that seemed like honestly forgetting or not knowing#and I instantly commented on how alternative they suggested wasn't bad and how it could still work!#but because they have super frail ego they perceived it as a personal attack apparently#and since Anna unblocked me right after to stalk me it just feels like they mocked me within their group later#again I wonder why popular artists with high skill but very little care for canon are SO insecure?#everyone admires them everyone wants to be their friend everyone draws fanart of their designs and ships#and yet slight event out of the line makes them turn into that one Wojack with a crying face behind smug mask#like how do you shovel notes and have more attention than what you can give back and STILL are this-#-insecure? really popularity can't heal you#if you fellow nobody artists feel as though your art being noticed would heal you: no it would not#honestly as for care for canon they already gave signal by boasting about prettyfying micolash because-#-they preferred 'aesthetic'#it is just something I've neglected because I was looking at redesigning characters differently#but seeing awful bimbo marikas for two years taught me better ngl#really I am dying to see them try to pull this one out with a female character#no really. try to pull the 'she looks ugly but I want me aesthetic so I polished her'.#hate double standards regarding drawing the character depending on their gender#but yeah in case you could not tell touching Bloodborne with ten yards stick just triggered a bad memory#I just.... I still love that game story and characters. I can feel it looking at these posts.#I really am the 'just make an OC' person#they should become friends with Eugene (champion of not caring for the source material) if not already

so wild to me as someone who has been involved in online fandom for 15+ years seeing now a generation of young fans who have had queer rep in their mainstream media for pretty much their whole lives and are so used to audience/creator interaction on socials that they go into new media with the GENUINE ACTIVE EXPECTATION that their favourite noncanon queer ship will either be acknowledged or become canon if it's popular enough online
