*at a grant nash BBQ*
buck: *staring off into space*
eddie: he's about to say something really funny or absolutely horrifying
tommy: what?
hen: just wait
buck: did you know these two orcas trained other orcas to kill sharks by taking out their liver and testicles?
eddie: yep horrifying
tommy: wait, really?
buck: yup, off the coast of africa there's these two orcas called port and starboard and they hunt sharks to eat their liver and testicles, they tag team them, one goes for their fins while the other takes out the liver, so far they've taken down five great whites, they even killed khaleesi, who was being tracked and traced for research purposes
tommy: oh my god really?
hen: *looks at tommy and smiles*
eddie: *whispers to hen* he's perfect for him
hen: *whispers back* i know!
buck: yeah! port and starboard have even started teaching other orcas to do the same! so far port and starboards record of how many sharks killed in a day is seventeen!
tommy: oh my god, that's insane baby, what else have port and starboard done?
buck: well they also hunt copper sharks and some fish, they even chased the great whites away from africa for seven weeks! but this isn't even the first time orcas have done something like this, in the early 1900's there was this orca called old tom who would help whalers hunt baleen whales, he even tugged the boats into the right position to get the whales, this happened in the port of eden new south whales in australia, you can actually go and see old tom's skeleton in eden killer whale meuseum, and on his teeth you can see marks from where he would pull the roaps! and old tom even has missing teeth because the whalers had this thing called "law of tounge" where they would strap the dead whales down so old tom and his pod could eat the lips and tongues, on the night where he lost his teeth logan, one of the davidson whaler friends tried to bring the whale in instead of pinning it down for old tom to eat, and old tom was pissed and tried to stop him, and he lost teeth, old tom died from starvation, when old tom died they thought he was 35, but the davidson family swore old tom helped three generations of their family with whaling, old tom was actually in his 90's when he died, they called old toms pod the killers of eden which-
tommy: would make an amazing true crime shark podcast name
buck:
eddie:

buck: *tears up* you get me

with ludinus arguing that people are So different from the divine that they wouldn't count for predathos, i wonder where that leaves the people like tieflings and aasimar where they literally have aspects of the divine as a part of their being. how far removed does someone have to be from the divine for predathos to suddenly not care about them, especially considering how starved it has been for thousands of years.

Ahoy. More Moby art. I am definitely not obsessed with this whale or his book, and no I am not secretly Ahab.
But if I ever end up making 5 Moby Dick related artwork posts in a row should I just make it a daily thing? Like Moby Dick Daily? Daily dose of Moby? How do I make it not sound weird without calling it simply whale weekly.

Also, I hid a little easter egg on the skiff (yes the little dark thing there is supposed to be a skiff) it’s hard to see but maybe you can spot it if you zoom enough :]
I’m getting bored of posting about just the whale. Next time, I’ll try my hand at drawing the crew maybe?

it's so fascinating to see how one of bram's ways to signal that the characters are modern and in tune with new science ends up horribly dating the book and making them all look worse to modern readers (i'm talking about the physiognomy thing)
Yes, absolutely! It's really interesting. In this case it's much worse because physiognomy is such an inherently racist and flawed idea. And that feels much more like something they could have realized. It forcibly reminds modern readers of the different culture these characters belonged to and the prejudices they either actively held or at the least passively accepted.
But it's not the only instance of the passage of time making certain details feel a lot different than they were meant to for contemporary readers. For example, Jack's phonograph is pretty new and exciting technology. Mina gets excited to see it today! But within the 1890s the shift from wax cylinders to flat discs began to happen, leading to gramophones and eventually record players. At the time this story is set (likely somewhere in the 1893-1897 range) the two technologies co-existed, but records were what eventually took off on a massive scale and phonographs with cylinders are seen as more of a prototype. This is something that might be less notable to modern readers since both are old technology to us, but it's a shift that happened not too long after the book was published. And of course the famous blood typing discovery...
When it was originally published, several critics disliked the book for being too modern, something they thought didn't suit a vampire story. Of course, the very contrast between modernity and ancient monsters was intentionally a major theme. And yet the passage of time changes our perspective on that theme. It's really fascinating to consider this stuff from 100+ years on.

Family Tree Version 3, now featuring dwarves, hobbits, and the intricacies of however ainur are related!
Double lines on each side of a line break are used where lines overlap (---ll | ll---). Dashed lines indicate unknown numbers of generations, and dotted lines are for adoption. Grey text is used for alternative/old draft versions and assumed relationships (such as sticking oropher in with the sons of galadhon, or putting one of the dunedain as the tooks' fairy ancestor).

My personal headcanon for the WH Mirror World is that Ishmael agreed to be a maid under the Edgar Family because she knew the heir was a sickly waif of a man who would probably croak from TB in a decade or two and she can train up to face Ahab in that amount of time, but unfortunately she got really attached to the sickly waif of a man she was banking on dying young.

Okay but I really like the idea of Sophie, Michael and Howell being roommates in 1980's college just for fun and giggles.
Michael, being a typical young student, survives on instant noodles and oatmeal he keeps in his nightstand instead of the table, stacking books on a blanket and trying to get along with Howell in five square meters. Overall he just a sweet boy who tries his best to study while Howell plays music from a tape recorder on the max volume at 1AM.
Howell Jenkins collects dust, random tests and papers, magazines, posters, a couple of dozen deflated rugby balls and old cassettes under his bed. A small family of spiders lives peacefully above his bed, who look like they've been here for 10 years already. He also locks himself in the bathroom for at least two hours every evening and every morning, and Michael fights for HIS LIFE to find a moment when the shower is free.
Sophie Hatter, on the other hand just...lives with them. Seriously, one day she barges into their room completely unannounced and starts cleaning Howl's part of the room, telling them that "she lives there now." She was not worried about the lack of extra space, nor other small points related to the fact that she simply invaded their private property. None of them kicked her out anyway, allowing her to terrorize their ten square meters. And, partly, not without scandal, spiders and Howl's fashionable clothes.

"No, no; stay on board, on board!—lower not when I do; when branded Ahab gives chase to Moby Dick. That hazard shall not be thine. No, no! not with the far away home I see in that eye!”
This entire chapter hurt, but Ahab seeing humanity and home in Starbuck and trying to keep him safe when they reach Moby Dick was especially heartbreaking. It echoes what happened with Pip, though he speaks more candidly to Starbuck. And the man almost reaches him, too, he almost gets Ahab to consider turning back.
Starbuck's struggle with Ahab and his decision to entreat him with humanity rather than violence (thinking again of that chapter where he considered killing him so they could all go home) is a really lovely arc too. I definitely think there's symbolism with Starbuck and Fedellah as representing different parts of/paths for Ahab. The final scene of today's chapter makes that pretty clear.
