Okay but whatever you do, don’t imagine Buck accidentally picking up one of Tommy’s LAFD sweatshirts on his way out to a shift. The shift is HARD and after a wild, multi-truck rescue, the 118 goes out for drinks with the other crews. Buck stands there with his back facing the rest of the bar, talking to Bobby and sipping a soda because he wants to be able to drive over to his boyfriend’s safely after this. Then, out of nowhere, one of the guys from the 79 yells “Ey, Kinard! I gotta hear about how you caught that little girl midair!” and. Buck’s. Heart. Stops. How did these guys somehow know about him and Tommy? Were they making fun of them or just joking around?! And Buck, unaware of the big white letters spelling out his boyfriend’s name for all to see, he just rolls with it. Turns around and starts chatting with the guys, making sure to slip in some references to Tommy as the conversation wanders away from the rescue. And to his surprise, one of the guys slaps Buck’s back as he says goodbye, leans in and congratulates him on his marriage before walking away.

the look tommy gives buck when he says “i hope so” to buck having daddy issues is so cheeky. like tommy kinard you slick bastard you know what you’re implying.

Just found out Tommy and Buck broke up.

Bullshit.

I love buddie just as much as the next person, but buddie is a relationship that will have angst and problems needing fixing, and i understand ppl who might like that more, but Tommy was honestly what Buck deserved.

Buck has always given, he gives a piece of himself to every person he loves and on so so many occasions his love for someone hasn’t worked out or has hurt him, because they didn’t look deep enough to give him some grace.

And then there was Tommy.

Tommy was so gentle and sweet to Buck, and he was supportive and Buck was finally getting taken care of- he was happy, and you just break that up?

Again, bullshit.

I am literally so devastated, Buck can’t get treated fairly irl let alone in canon.

hey guys this is so not cool i cannot cry tears of joy this often it is bad for my health!!! i will be the officiant shedding real tears, actually!!!

hey. imagine buck and tommy decide to live together in tommy’s little fixer upper. buck installs one of those ring cameras for security but like…then imagine buck is trying his hand at like…idk insta reels. he sets one up facing the front door from the inside and records like six months worth of home comings because it’ll be cute right? a way to capture his man and their life that he can keep forever like the scrapbook he still has from thomas and mitchell.

so. theres quite a few captures of tommy coming home from work, buck greeting him at the door with a kiss. theres tommy coming in from a run and grinning as soon as he catches sight of buck through the hallway, in the kitchen. at some point theres ones of tommy coming in and dropping to his knees to greet the belgian shepherd they adopted after one of tommy‘s old military buddies hit him up about taking the dog on because he was getting redeployed.

theres a few of tommy easing the door open silently and closing it gently because buck is in sleeping off a 48. theres a few of tommy barreling in shoulder first after his own 48, dead on his feet, hanging his keys up on the hook just out of frame and then resting his forehead against the wall for a few seconds before trudging upstairs.

theres one of tommy and buck slamming the door open with their hands all over each other, and buck throwing a cheeky grin at the camera while tommy mouths at his jaw and manhandles him further inside. theres one of tommy opening the door gently with jee-yun‘s hand in his own and buck behind them smiling softly. theres even some of tommy opening the door and buck materialising so he can scare the shit of him.

and maybe a few months in, theres one where tommy comes home and makes eye contact with the camera for a few seconds (but buck doesn’t clock this until he edits the footage).

and maybe a month or so after tommy clocks the camera we get a home coming. but this time, its buck opening the door. only to be greeted with tommy on one knee, open box in hand. of course, buck’s smile is bright enough to crack the sky in two. and when the ring is affixed and tommy has buck in his arms and they are spinning around and giggling like a scene out of one of the romance films tommy adores, we see tommy stop and settle his hands around bucks waist, tuck his nose into his curls, and wink at the camera.

“You ever wonder…” Tommy trails off, shaking his head a little dismissively.

“Wonder what?”

“Nothing, nothing. It’s just,“ he shrugs, kinda sheepishly, he knows it’s a stupid thing to waste time thinking about what ifs, “you ever think about how different things would be if Chim hadn’t called me up with that collective death wish? If we’d never even met that night.”

But Evan just smiles.

“Nah.”

“Nah?”

“We’d’ve found each other some other way.”

“You think so?”

“I know so. We’ve been circling closer and closer for years, Tommy - the 118, the calls we now know we both responded to, even that night when I met Red instead of noticing the hottest guy on the planet at the other end of the bar - we would have found each other some other way, eventually.”

Tommy snorts, partly at the hottest guy on the planet comment, and partly at how sure Evan sounds about it. As though it was fate bringing them together.

“You really believe that?”

“I really do. I don’t believe there’s a single universe where I never get to meet my soulmate.”

Soulmate.

It’s possibly - no, who is he kidding - it is definitely the most romantic thing anyone has ever said to Tommy. Maybe the most romantic thing someone ever will. It sounds like a line lifted straight out of one of his most re-watched romcoms, something that people don’t just come out with in real life, and certainly not in Tommy’s real life. His thoughts drift to the small box hidden in the lower compartment of his toolbox, if Evan’s casually pulling out shit like this as they lounge on the couch waiting for Eddie and Chim to arrive with pizza and beers, Tommy’s suddenly not sure he’s going to survive the wedding vows he hopes are in their future.

He doesn’t say that, obviously, he wants to maintain some element of surprise when he asks. Instead it’s -

“Didn’t have you down for the soulmates type.” Because, sure, he knows Evan is superstitious in the way a lot of firefighters are, but he didn’t think that extended to his love life. He loves love, that is true, but every conversation they’ve had since that second do-over of a date, about being willing to put in the work, to communicate, to learn how to show up for each other, it doesn’t scream letting the universe just do it’s thing.

“I’m not. Or, I wasn’t. And then you came along. Tommy, I didn’t even know I liked guys,” he stresses, “but I wanted to be with you. More than I knew how to deal with. And then, you gave me a second chance that I probably didn’t deserve, and I just…this isn’t me saying I’m taking it for granted okay? I know that we’re not magically perfect for each other or whatever, I just, part of me just knows that it was always meant to be you, y’know?”

Which, Tommy supposes, is kinda what he was getting at in the first place. He slots his fingers in between Evan’s and squeezes, thumb rubbing a familiar pattern across the back of his hand.

“I do.” He smiles.

so we know buck is Bad at letting people take care of him when he is recovering from an injury, right?

what if, when the day comes that Tommy gets injured, Buck is so determined to help Tommy recover in every way he can but, surprise surprise, tommy is also a Bad Patient.

thus ensues a collection of scenes of Buck putting Tommy on house arrest, leveraging kisses and homecooked meals for the pilot to stay in bed and rest and not think about work for a while. meanwhile, Tommy grumbles and insists he is fine but doesn’t fight Buck too hard on it because he sees the way his boyfriend’s eyes light up whenever he takes a nap, or eats a bit more than the day before.

and Tommy gets better, but we know Buck.

he eventually gets hurt again.

and this time? Buck isn’t as much of a Bad Patient; he remembers what it felt like to be in the shoes of the caretaker, the one worrying constantly and being unable to do much more than love and hover, and he gets it now!
