British people: these avocados must go they're past their prime please won't someone eat them
The avocados:
#British stores label avocados as ripe or not because people don't know how to tell by picking one up with their hands#these labels are almost always incorrect btw#we stayed with my in-laws for passover one year and I brought a bunch of avocados that were varying degrees of ripe so I could#have avocado on matzah for breakfast each day#and my mother in law just looked at the stickers saying they were ripe and freaked out that they were going to go bad and had to be eaten#and just served them to everyone for lunch on like day 2#without asking me!#I was so mad#half of them were decidely not ripe yet#for context: I have digestive issues and brought a lot of my own food to accommodate for it so she didn't have to#and you know how she served them? cut in half#on a plate#with a spoon#no salt no dressing no anything just eat half an avocado with a spoon#we went out and bought a bunch more the next day and I showed her how to tell which ones are ripe but I'm a salty bitch and I'm still mad#it's been like 3 years#also if one more Brit tells me they've made guacamole only to serve me a bowl of mashed avocado that saw a grain of salt once from a train#I will lose it

I watched the 1973 film The Slipper and the Rose last night, and it was a largely charming, if slightly anemic, adaptation of Cinderella---right up until you get to the song sung by the many servants hanging around the castle. I won't bore you with details, but can be summarized as basically: "We accept our lot in society/ all of us are born into the role we were always intended for/ there are no exceptions/ la dee dah folderol etc."
(The fact that the prince listens to this elaborate number and "fixes" the situation by knighting his man-at-arms, then leaning back in his chair like he has solved monarchy is....well, it's a choice.)
Anyway, this was enough to immediately poison the rest of the movie for me, and the only excuse I could come up with is that prince's man-at-arms has realized that a) his boss is unhinged, and b) will only learn a lesson if there's a literal song-and-dance number involved. Therefore, I think you could fix the whole movie by throwing in some scenes where the man-at-arms figures this out, and convinces the whole palace staff to join him in this insanity.
"Listen, people!'' he could bellow into his makeshift megaphone after the juggling servants drop yet another platter. ''I know this is absurd. I know you all have actual jobs to do. But our noble prince dragged me out to the royal crypt so he could complain about his family and we could literally dance on their tombs. That's who we're dealing with here! If we do not get this choreo right he will never give us health insurance. Do you want that? No? Okay then---and FIVE SIX SEVEN EIGHT---"
(Afterwards, when the newly promoted man-at-arms gets back to the castle, he finds the entire staff standing in the kitchen. They were waiting for him. They do not look amused.)
#what an incredibly bonkers thing to encounter in a movie FROM THE 1970s.#even if the writers were british....my guys. why are all the peasants singing about how they're so happy to be peasants#and that there's no social mobility in this kingdom is a good thing.#that's an insane take. of all the ways to deal with ''the prince doesn't want to be a prince'' you picked the worst.#I can stomach so much royal nonsense but that was. again. bonkers. I can't believe I had to ruin my eyes that way.#a proscenium for our dreams#fairytales

I’m an Alfred/Martha/Thomas truther. Like Alfred is a baddie in his 80s you all know he must have been a slice back in the day. And it is canon Martha and Thomas were smoke shows.
Like let hot people get it. Let hot men kiss while their wife turns mobsters kneecaps into flour with a baseball bat.
#I feel like with all those portraits in the manor teenage Bruce must have had that weird moment when he was like#‘why were my parents hotter than me at 16?’#y’all know what I mean you find a photo of like your grandparents when they were young and you have to know why your so crusty#but like nope apparently grandpa was an absolute chad#Bruce Wayne#Martha Wayne#Thomas Wayne#alfred pennyworth#I bet Martha was dog walking those men#her British Twink and Italian Bodybuilder#batman#batfam#like and imagine the kids reaction#they find a candid shot of young Alfred making out with Grandpa Tom?#they can’t handle the idea of Alfred getting so much play#rip to Martha and Thomas they are eating ass and smoking grass with the angels now#it’s for the best#the Gotham rogues would be found scalped if they were still kicking#gotham#jason todd#dick grayson#damian wayne#tim drake#dc batman

Haven't I answered this before? French the foods nicer the weather's better and it's still apart of the eu
#ask#anon#off topic#but a friend and me were discussing the word british#and how its basically just a synonym for english#bc no one who uses the word british is ever actually referring to Scotland or wales#and if you say you are#your lying#bc the Scots hate being called British#and 70% welsh dont like it either#so why not just say English#and before anyone gets on me about “well the islands technically called great Britain” or “the islands are called the British isles”#stupid argument#that like me saying i can call people from Mexico Americans bc theyre apart of the Americas

Still more important is the realization that all those generations of British people (largely men), who were educated in the classics, were being taught to understand and sympathize with the Greeks and Romans. When thinking of the long confrontation between the Celts and Romans, therefore they instinctively sided with the Romans. They would have all read Tacitus' warning: "Remember, they are barbarians..." For the Romans were seen as the bearers of civilization and the ancient Britons as the uncivilized.....
All manner of pressure was brought to bear to ensure that British schoolboys empathized with Rome. From the sixteenth century to the mid-twentieth, every educated person was required to learn Latin. Caesar and Tacitus were among the very first authors which all those pupils were obliged to read. Yet no one taught them anything about the Celts, let alone a Celtic language. Even today, when the teaching of classics in the United Kingdom has sharply declined and Celtic studies receive a measure of official support, for every British schoolchild that learns even a little about the native Celtic heritage, there are a hundred that still learn about the heritage of Rome.
A whole literary genre was devoted to strengthening the bond of identity between the modern Britons and the Ancient Romans. Any number of books and poems have been written to invite the reader to stand in Roman shoes, to put oneself shoulder to shoulder with the legions in the eternal struggle of civilization against barbarity.
-Norman Davies, The Isles
#So this book presents an interesting view of modern England that claims that Englands obsession with colonization imperialism and conquest#is directly descended from Britains own colonization by Rome#The modern Englishman according to Davies knows more about Greece and Rome than the pre Roman history of his own land#Even modern English people believe that the Celts Picts and Gauls (their own ancestors) were savage barbarians#whose conquest by the more “civilized” Romans was NECESSARY to make the isles civilized.#cycle of violence etc#colonization#colonialism#roman history#british history
