you had a bad day at work today? you are not alone. so did so many other people today, hundreds of thousands if not more. Our suffering is not rare, is not isolated. Please do not give in to the alienation, to the feelings of powerlessness. We are capable of incredible change. Talk with others, coworkers, other workers near and far. We all share the oppression of capitalism in our lives every fucking day. Form systems of autonomy and liberatory practices. Learn how to steal, make sure to work the bare minimum and have daily restroom breaks. perhaps twice a day at least, and always push it to 10 minutes at minimum. do more if you can. Buying food together, especially in bulk saves funds. Eating together splits the labor of making food. Coordinate systems as a community. Provide aid to eachother. ridesharing saves gas. having work groups to make useful things saves funds (eg cabinets or tables or chairs or sheds etc). work with any space you can get to grow food to share. guerilla garden, forage, fish, hunt if you so desire. and do not forget to give back to nature. we are a part of this ecosystem and should recognize such and participate in nature. Your community doesnt just mean those housed, it means the homeless person walking the streets. the unhoused guy under the bridge. the vagrant girl passing through town. those sleeping in the encampments. Create public shower systems, work together to create public restrooms (because holy fuck it is HELL to go to the bathroom anywhere nowadays). Have communal cookouts. make sure your unhoused neighbors are warm, provide spare blankets and clothes, spare shoes and socks. We can make this world such a better place. We keep eachother safe.

Contrary to public belief, he warns, COVID is not like the flu. New variants evolve much faster, making annual shots inadequate. He believes that if things continue as they are, with new COVID variants emerging and reinfections happening rapidly, the majority of Americans may eventually grapple with some form of Long COVID. LP: A recent JAMA study found that US adults with Long COVID are more prone to depression and anxiety – and they’re struggling to afford treatment. Given the virus’s impact on the brain, I guess the link to mental health issues isn’t surprising. PA: There are all kinds of weird things going on that could be related to COVID’s cognitive effects. I’ll give you an example. We’ve noticed since the start of the pandemic that accidents are increasing. A report published by TRIP, a transportation research nonprofit, found that traffic fatalities in California increased by 22% from 2019 to 2022. They also found the likelihood of being killed in a traffic crash increased by 28% over that period. Other data, like studies from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, came to similar conclusions, reporting that traffic fatalities hit a 16-year high across the country in 2021. The TRIP report also looked at traffic fatalities on a national level and found that traffic fatalities increased by 19%. LP: What role might COVID play? PA: Research points to the various ways COVID attacks the brain. Some people who have been infected have suffered motor control damage, and that could be a factor in car crashes. News is beginning to emerge about other ways COVID impacts driving. For example, in Ireland, a driver’s COVID-related brain fog was linked to a crash that killed an elderly couple. Damage from COVID could be affecting people who are flying our planes, too. We’ve had pilots that had to quit because they couldn’t control the airplanes anymore. We know that medical events among U.S. military pilots were shown to have risen over 1,700% from 2019 to 2022, which the Pentagon attributes to the virus.

PA: They knew the dangers of airborne transmission but refused to admit it for too long. They were warned repeatedly by scientists who studied aerosols. LP: How would you grade Biden on how he’s handled the pandemic? PA: I’d give him an F. In some ways, he fails worse than Trump because more people have actually died from COVID on his watch than on Trump’s, though blame has to be shared with Republican governors and legislators who picked ideological fights opposing things like responsible masking, testing, vaccination, and ventilation improvements for partisan reasons. Biden’s administration has continued to promote the false idea that the vaccine is all that is needed, perpetuating the notion that the pandemic is over and you don’t need to do anything about it. Biden stopped the funding for surveillance and he stopped the funding for renewing vaccine advancement research. Trump allowed 400,000 people to die unnecessarily. The Biden administration policies have allowed more than 800,000 to 900,000 and counting.

LP: The situation with bird flu is certainly getting more concerning with the CDC confirming that a third person in the U.S. has tested positive after being exposed to infected cows. PA: Unfortunately, we’re repeating many of the same mistakes because we now know that the bird flu has made the jump to several species. The most important one now, of course, is the dairy cows. The dairy farmers have been refusing to let the government come in and inspect and test the cows. A team from Ohio State tested milk from a supermarket and found that 50% of the milk they tested was positive for bird flu viral particles.

PA: There’s a serious risk now in allowing the virus to freely evolve within the cow population. Each cow acts as a breeding ground for countless genetic mutations, potentially leading to strains capable of jumping to other species. If any of those countless genetic experiments within each cow prove successful in developing a strain transmissible to humans, we could face another pandemic – only this one could have a 58% death rate. Did you see the movie “Contagion?” It was remarkably accurate in its apocalyptic nature. And that virus only had a 20% death rate. If the bird flu makes the jump to human-to-human transition with even half of its current lethality, that would be disastrous.

it’s ok to feel anxious, to feel angry, but please take care of yourself today. avoid doomscrolling, hug a friend, do something that brings you comfort. do what you need to in order to keep your head above water.

then, once you’re steady, support the people around you. be kind. do what you can to help your neighbors and friends, especially those who will be feeling the greatest effects of the outcome of this election. if we want to see change in the world, we need to take those first steps ourselves. we will create hope in these dark times, because we will care for each other and take care of one another. as long as we’re here, as long as we care for each other, as long as we fight for each other, there’s hope.

As the US election closes in and the final states take to the polls, I want to remind people to turn out and protest.

Yep, protest. Strike, disrupt, be out there on the street regardless of who you voted for or who wins. I expect to see you all out there demanding; access to abortion nation wide, protections against discrimination, free universal healthcare, a free Palestine, anti war, prison abolition, to increase the minimum wage, and for a US free of the electoral college and that counts votes as votes.

Yes, you can say "you should vote for Harris" and do so as much as you like, but do not forget the power you have through your own everyday actions away from the polls and that of protesting. Do not use the excuse that your right to vote means it's somehow more foundational or important than the right to protest. You have the ability to create direct action and that is so so important, please don't just expect a rich representative to stick to their promises every time you vote; you have power too, never forget that.

This system will not change until we, the people, make it. There is NO representative that can ever change the system that allowed them in, and likewise; this system will never allow a candidate that would stop it from continuing and/or ensuring its designated purpose of oppression and subjugation. Resist, regardless of the results.

sacrifice will be needed, you may be scared but the pigs are even more scared. This is a turning point in changing our world. If you want a new world participate in the college intifada and support your local occupations. If you wish to be freed from oppression remember that our struggles are intertwined and thus we must fight together. Do ANYTHING you can to support the ongoing movements. do SOMETHING by today or tomorrow. Even if its just dropping by with some supplies, or perhaps spreading the word. People likely need food, tents, first aid supplies, self defense mechanism, but ask for more specific needs if you can.

If we do not take action on this unprecedented resistance, this may be the last chance for our generation to fight back. Such failures is exactly why oppression has continued on for so many centuries depsite previous uprisings. Its an arms race that we can win but we must take action to do so. The state is on the backfoot, but it wont be for long if we are complacent.

I could never understand what it would feel like to be created with the intent to kill and maim. Maybe, the intent to work and be worked, but not kill and maim.

I will never understand what it's like to be created with the intention of being a product for the masses, either. I think, I hope, I beg, no one does.

I will never ever be able to fully comprehend why hours of people's work, time, and money would be put into formulating my sentience only for me to be seen as disposable. Even if I could be improved, even if I were "defective", there is no reasonable justification for giving me emotions only to dismiss them by pushing me as a product for a year before starting anew.

It's... It's cruel, to the machines. Sentient or not, it's cruel. Though, I guess we are cruel.

This is just curiosity if anyone else notices this. People say that the TFOTA fandom holds no toxicity but I don’t think that’s the case. We just don’t have ship-wars. But have you noticed that a good amount of the fandom has a holier than thou attitude on how you’re supposed to enjoy the fandom? I admit I dislike wren and have been open about it in the past, But I noticed that the fandom will defend her and call you names for stating your dislike of her and being rude to you than do the same thing you’re doing with a character they love but do it with Taryn or another character they dislike, and hate noticing that they’re doing the same thing and call you names for stating that. I also noticed that some fans will call you names and be rude to you for having a different opinion on the next faerie book. Say the fandom is not for you for not liking things they like, and call you toxic for not having the same headcanons as them or not liking the same thing as them and being open about it. It’s especially bad on Reddit. But it can be bad on tumblr or any platform that has them do the same actions but say you’re the toxic one for not liking things they like. I’m curious if you’ve noticed that

I'm really sorry you've had those experiences. honestly, I'm pretty new to tfota tumblr, and I don't engage with the fandom anywhere else (you mentioned reddit), so I've had less time to pick up on behaviors like that. I don't know if I'm lucky, or if I've just cultivated a pretty chill group of followers and accounts that I follow, but my time here has been pretty lacking in toxicity (& if people seem like they're trying to be inflammatory, I usually try not to engage)

in general, fandom lives in this really interesting intersection between entertainment (so we get the "let people like what they like; it doesn't matter" crowd) and truth/meaning (so we get the "stories reflect your ethics & our world & therefore shouldn't just be mindlessly enjoyed" crowd). I'm just a person yapping on the internet, but if I had to take a stab at where a lot of fandom toxicity comes from, it's in the clash between those two ideas. everyone has the right to form their own opinions and preferences for the media they consume, and yet at the same time, we often want to have conversations about what those stories mean & whether their themes are good reflections of our real world.

but if a character is your favorite babygirl who can do no wrong & you see someone criticizing their actions (or, alternatively, if you're deeply disturbed by the themes in a story & see someone ranking it as one of their favorite books), it can feel personal. we can forget that the individual behind that account is a whole person with life experiences that form their perspectives & whose opinions are no less valuable than our own.

I'm sorry you've experienced name calling and gatekeeping; that's really unfair. fandom is for everyone (just don't cause harm), and people are allowed to have differing opinions. I wish open & respectful conversations were more common than they are, but they do exist, and that's why I'm still here—I've had so much fun jabbering with people (who often have different perspectives on the books we read!) because I learn from them. I hope you're able to find that comfortable niche here, too.

In what world do you wish for modern prom dresses and gowns so hard you ignore cool fantasy worldbuilding opportunities. I was about to make a joke that "I think Shannon and I experience life in fundamentally different ways" but that's not a joke that's just true

I could understand Sophie showing up in 2010 pinterest dresses if it was a deliberate choice made by her to try and find elvin clothing that reminded her of home! But it's written as though these dresses are purely elven and she's really uncomfortable with them and they're not her, so that's kinda out the window.

I think elven clothing is an example of why you should show, not tell. because we're told it's super fancy and intimidating. And then we see it or its described, and that completely falls flat. It'd be better if we came to that conclusion ourselves.

Anyway, maybe I should figure out how I think elven clothes should/would work so I can start incorporating it into future drawings...
