i’ve been on sorta a kick of different late 2000s to early 2010s procedurals recently and here are my thoughts on a few:
monk: genuinely tony shalhoub is an incredible actor and while i do like the show. i do not think it’s necessarily my favorite out of all the ones i’ve watched recently. it gets very repetitive after a while but it is very comforting for me to be able to watch a show n know that it will be solid and interesting :)
white collar: literally insane how good this show is n how little people talk about it. matt bomer is such a great actor and his chemistry with the other cast members is so enjoyable!! he kinda has no chemistry with some of the women he’s put with but i forgive him bc he is so pretty…
leverage: another really good show… honestly it’s very pulpy and campy but that means it’s always going to be fun and enjoyable and every episode ends basically happy!! i think parker, eliot, and hardison are easily a top 10 trio in all of fiction… they just play off of each other rly well
psych: peak. tv has not gotten better than this and probably will never. i have never laughed so hard at a tv show. i love u dulé hill if ur seeing this.
burn notice: love but also not as much as i love my other bad boy anti hero procedurals. sometimes it is like soooo agressively masculine bc they’re trying to seem cool n idk i think it doesn’t always work… i still love u tho don’t worry.
house: peak television again. if i didn’t have an intense fear of illness and hospitals i’d watch it more. honestly crazy how life changing every episode is from this show n how genuinely crazy they let hugh laurie act.

I saw a post proposing that the reason the Doctor always ends up on Gallifrey at a time after he last left it but before the next time he'll visit, and other Time Lords similarly are all showing up on Gallifrey in a chronological manner, is that the TARDIS just handles it. and that is great! but I would like to propose that, as well as and alongside this, Time Lords have a biological like-calls-to-like thing going on that means they're extremely unlikely to encounter each other out of order. it's like how birds can sense north. Time Lords can sense each other, and are repelled (like magnets) by other Time Lords who are at a mismatched point in their chronology.
the TARDIS is handling it, but she's doing that partly by avoiding any time & place where the Doctor's spidey sense starts tingling. (the Doctor is not aware of this.) that's why the Doctor and the Master don't run into past/future incarnations of each other: any time one of them aims for a planet the other is already on, if they'd be running into each other out of order, they get the heebie jeebies and turn around.

When the Vanserra-Archeron twins find out that Nyx is courting their beloved friend, Zinnia (Tamlin's daughter), they're not amused at all. Specially Sylvie.
She doesn't care about her cousin, has a borderline hostile dynamic with him, but for the most part he's just "that guy from Night Court she happens to share blood with". Neth is on better terms with him and she doesn't mind spending time with him, but they're not close enough to see him as family. She considers him more a long-distance friend.
Meanwhile, they adore Zinnia. They grew up with her. She's their godfather's daughter, their beloved Uncle Tamlin. They spent their childhoods jumping from Spring to Autumn frecuently just to see each other. They love like her a sister. Their families are on the same circle. In their eyes, Zinnia has always been this sweet girl they must protect and who only deserves the best.
Which it's not Nyx Archeron. Or any other brute from the Night Court. They're sure of it.
It's not just them. Literally, no one in their circle approves of this possible union, except Elain (because she knows things). Both Eris and Nesta are amused by the whole mess but he doesn't think they fit together and she doesn't want her to be at the Night Court . Lucien doesn't like it at all and neither do his and Elain's kids. And let's not get started on poor Tamlin, having to see his exes' spawn court his precious daughter so insistently.
Back at the Night Court, it's more or less the same situation. Rhysand is the only person that openly supports his son on this and even gives him advice on how to woo the girl (which is awful advice because he only tells him to do the same things he did with feyre, ignoring that not everyone enjoys those as much as she did). Feyre doesn't understand why he's so enthusiastic about becoming family with Tamlin. The rest of the IC know where Rhysand is coming from and don't dare tell Feyre the truth...

So my rewatch has arrived at s2, and it's interesting to discover how I'm seeing ep1 with new eyes now.
I remember thinking that s2 started somewhat off in terms of tone, leaning too far into comedy.
HOWEVER.
I had not noticed at the time, as I have now, that ep1 gave us a momentary glimpse into a world where Fan Xian really did die, and what it would mean.
And particularly how it would mean Chen Pingping being ready to FUCK SHIT UP. It's like Fan Xian is his last tether to restraint. Once Fan Xian is gone, he's done being hinged nice and is about to go apeshit.
As I've said before, s2 convinced me that Chen Pingping hates the emperor and will destroy him with the exploding wheelchair. Well, the dude seems READY to press that button in ep1. His finger is ON that button as he waits to meet the emperor.
In the corridor before the imperial study, Fan Jian rages at Chen Pingping for having doomed Fan Xian with his schemes, and demands to know--what now? And Chen Pingping is like, I'll pay with my life. But there's a bunch of people I'm taking down with me.
And he has absolute MURDER in his eyes until he hears that the emperor got the second message and calmed down (and so they realize that Fan Xian has faked his death).
Chen Pingping, upon learning that Fan Xian is alive after all:
Tumblr media
Chen Pingping communicates his vision on two other occasions during this episode. When he initially hears Fan Xian died, he summons the entire bureau and is like, be prepared because due to this death the world is about to fall into chaos.
(He doesn't say "because I'm on my way to murder the emperor," but it's implied. To me.)
And he gives a corresponding answer to Yan Ruohai when he asks, what if Fan Xian had died for real? His answer is: a lot of blood would be spilled.
And the episode is comedic in many parts, sure. But that bit is CHILLING??
Like, Fan Xian has NO IDEA how close he came to unleashing havoc on the country with his fake death.
And we don't even know what the emperor would have done. He legit freaks out when he hears Fan Xian died, and summons Chen Pingping in a thunderous enough manner that it's clear he's expecting someone to pay with their lives, too. (And then he's extra furious at Fan Xian for causing him to have these distressed feelings. So he'll make Fan Xian jump through extra hoops to "come back to life".)
Anyway: it's a lighthearted episode, for sure. But it's got some hella dark undercurrents that I didn't notice the first time.

i genuinely love when you can tell an older show was Not made with high quality video viewing in mind. i am watching knight rider and constantly seeing all the little mistakes they surely brushed under the rug thinking nobody would see them on their crunchy little CRTs back in the 80s, that are huge attention grabbers now in HD fullscreen on my 3 foot computer monitor
the biggest one of course is all the drivers/controllers for the (in-universe) self driving car, kitt. there's guys tucked down in the footwells who can't always stay out of the shot. there's a guy who has a Car Seat Suit to blend in and look like the drivers seat from a distance, but you can always tell when that's the method they're using for a particular shot because its so much thicker than the passenger seat next to it and the headrest is missing it's cutout section. in at least one instance he starts taking the suit off too early, on a focus shot of the damn car, so its REAL visible.
all the extremely obvious stunt drivers or performers who look nothing like the character they're supposed to be
props, such as animals, vanishing from the car interior for stunt/race sequences.
the production crew (or their shadows) being visible in the background. only at a glance, but its especially hilarious in shots where nobody else is supposed to be around
the camera panning out from a sound stage set far enough that you can actually see over the edges of the set and into the stage they were filming in. mostly this happens with their truck trailer mobile unit thing.
this one isn't a mistake but every time the car "turbo jumps" they CLEARLY hide the ramp behind another car, a prop, the environment, and its just. so charming. sometimes its blatantly on screen just for a moment. like... of Course in real life this car isn't magically leaping 20 feet, of course its a ramp, but it's still so silly and fun to be reminded of how they were doing those stunts to begin with.
also not really a mistake but related, the bracket they keep on the front of the car for stunt work.... is just left on half the time. cuz it's a pain to take on and off.
and there are more examples that are more unique that haven't cemented themselves in my head well yet, but these are the more notable or common things i see and it's really charming. if i'm not giggling to myself noticing the "seams" and flaws and so human imperfections of your show or movie what EVEN is the point. hollywood is too flashy these days i think!

Legitimately the most mediocre generic mid-2000s white american action show ever made and yet. they really did something with those character dynamics. if I wrote burn notice fanfiction it would be fucking amazing. you wouldn’t know what hit you.
