Asta's mystery

I have many, way too many feelings about this show and a paper to turn in so obviously the right decision was to write some fanfic about it. I haven't written anything in english for a while so please be indulgent! Enjoy!

Asta and Harry share a moment after saving the world for the nth-time, and Harry comes to a conclusion.

They’re sitting on the couch in the cabin. The TV is on, playing a black-and-white movie on mute because they’re too tired from saving the world to find the remote. They’re bruised, cut, and crashing from all the adrenaline. But they’re safe. Each of them holds a bag of frozen produce—mixed berries for Asta’s knee, peas for Harry’s forehead. Asta drops hers on the coffee table, sighs, and tentatively settles into Harry’s arms.

Yes, she thinks. Warmth, strength, goodness. This is what I need.

"You’ve saved the planet, Harry. And me. Again," she mumbles against his chest.

He’s surprised to feel his arms wrap around her, holding her of their own volition. Comforting Asta feels like the right thing to do—the human thing to do. Yet it feels like more than that, too. Like duty, need... devotion.

"I will always protect you."

The strange cadence of his voice makes the words sound like the beginning of rain, uneven droplets hitting the ground. I will. Always. Protect. You. Asta can’t stop the smile from forming,  a smile too big for someone who’s nearly died three times in a matter of days. She can’t stop the butterflies in her stomach either, and the words keep repeating in her head, tingling across her skin.

I will. Always. Protect. You.

She’s falling asleep when suddenly the clouds part outside the cabin windows, and a ray of sunlight hits her face. She sits up, taking it in—the beauty, the golden greens, oranges, and yellows. She wants to absorb it all.

Harry almost groans in frustration at the sudden loss of her warmth, but stops when he glances at Asta’s profile. The setting sun makes her bronze complexion glow, bathing her in light like she’s something otherworldly. And she is, actually. But why?

Why does this particular human make Harry feel so many things at once? Why does she take over his body like it’s nothing? Why is he so consumed with keeping her safe, making her happy, seeing her as often as possible? And why is she looking at him like that?

Asta turns back, her jet-black eyes locking onto his. No, it’s more like burning. It feels like he’s melting away on the cabin couch. Her gaze flickers from his eyes to his lips, then back up again. And then just like that, she gets up, limps to the fridge, and puts the frozen fruits away.

The Earth is safe, and the world resumes its course. But Harry is stuck in this moment. Even after Asta leaves, when he’s back in bed, it lingers—rousing him from sleep, making his heart pound and his insides twist. He has never seen that expression on a human’s face before.

What did it mean?

Autumn rolls around, and the whole town falls back into its normal rhythm. But Harry can’t move on from that moment. He thinks of it at the diner. In the car.  In the shower. When she’s here. When she’s not.

Some time later, he’s watching a human detective in a fancy coat solves crimes on the TV and suddenly realizes—Asta’s look is like a good mystery. He may not care about understanding every human habit, but he cares about understanding his Asta.

So it’s decided.

He’ll solve Asta’s secret. Asta’s mystery.
