Shen Yuan Breaks the System - Mom AU

In an AU where SY's level of Spite is high enough to defy physics, he fries the system on his way into PIDW. It doesn't get the chance to put him into SQQ. All he cares about as he is bounced like a Ping-Pong ball through the void is thinking of Binghe.

Eventually, his soul finds an anchor that accepts it. He wakes up in the body of a frail washer woman with Luo Binghe sobbing over him. This body is just as chronically ill as his former life, and he feels like he has been hit by a truck. All his organs hurt, but Binghe assures him that it's alright--Binghe is here. Binghe hand feeds him congee and holds him tight, calling him Mama and promising to take better care of him from now on.

SY knows that he doesn't have long in this new life. A few months at most. He tells Binghe everything he can--that he's a demon, how to survive Cang Qiong without hurting himself, who he can and can't trust, and most importantly he tells him about the Holy Mausoleum, which can be used to revive someone.

When SY dies, LBH finds Mobei and gets him to freeze + preserve his mother's body (It's less perfect than the preservation of SQQ's body in SVSSS, but it works in a pinch)

Many years later, when Washerwoman-SY wakes up, there's a woman's soft voice in the back of his mind that also feels like part of him--like a seamless integration. The voice is just as protective of Binghe as he is...

It always makes me sad that Luo Binghe's adopted mom is just called "the poor washer woman".

On my fourth watch-through of Dead Boy Detectives I realized why the Washer Woman doesn't appear to Tragic Mick. It's not just that she only appears to people whose need is great enough, it's that she appears specifically as she says to save people's lives. The gang is desperately trying to stop whatever is killing a bunch of people, so she appears for them--their need is great and her helping them will save lives (Crystal, all the people at the festival, even Angie). Crystal is left behind briefly to ask about her problem, because her knowing herself will also save lives (her own, the boys, everyone else she's able to help).

Mick's need is great, but him returning to the ocean won't save as many lives as his magic shop business on land has been, so the Washer Woman does not appear for him.

I have this au that just kinda… drops off half way through, which is why I haven’t posted it before. But I can’t think of anything else for it, so you get what little there is!

SXY manages to survive the poison when giving birth. Maybe it wasn’t as strong, maybe she managed to cut it off early enough, maybe LBH’s demon blood helped. Who knows. The point is, she is now half dead instead of fully dead, in a lot of pain, and has a newborn baby because she just gave birth! She’s just thinking about doing her original plan- sending LBH down the river- when a nice washer woman comes along and finds her.

I’m going to call her Ms Luo for this, since she doesn’t have a name in canon. Ms Luo is a kind woman! She’s kind of enough to take in a baby she has found in the wilderness, and she’s kind enough to take in this dying, half feral cultivator and her newborn baby as well!

SXY doesn’t trust it- obviously. But she doesn’t get much of a say when she falls unconscious, does she, hmmm? And she stays in and out of unconsciousness for the next few days, at least. The poi didn’t kill her, but it did mess her up. I imagine for this au it would limit her lower mobility, if it was trying to kill the baby. Some bad nerve damage there.

But Ms Luo is here! She doesn’t have much, but she does care for the baby as SXY is unconscious. She tries to get medication for SXY as well, but isn’t successful. Just as well- normal medication wouldn’t do much for what’s wrong anyway.

And this is the new normal that SXY wakes up to- a week plus later, her cultivation (which also would have taken a hit) having done its best at repairing the damage, her lover and the father of her child either dead or sealed away out of reach, and at the mercy of this random washerwoman.

She’s not getting any better until she could see a sect doctor, preferably one of the best ones. But that’s never going to happen- she’s wanted now, surely! Demonic sympathizers were never treated well. (The cultivation world thinks she’s dead, tragically killed by TJL. But she doesn’t know this yet.)

So she does the only thing she can- hang around and help Ms Luo out. She can’t leave, not with her mobility issues, nor would she be able to provide for her baby. But she can stay here, under the kindness of this woman, and try and help her out.

She starts to help wash the clothes- don’t have to be standing for parts of that! To save on food, she focuses her limited cultivation so she doesn’t have to eat the limited supplies they have. She’s terrifying, and she’s uses that to her advantage when intimidating Ms Luo’s shitty boss.

Ms Luo repays her by not only letting her live there, but also helping with LBH, giving SXY a new name to hide with, and her friendship. (SXY will never admit it, but she never had a lot of friends. Having one in Ms Luo was… nice)

LBH, meanwhile, is absolutely loving being raised by two moms. He’s learning to cook from Ms Luo, and learning cultivating from SXY. What else would a young boy need?

And then LBH is ten, and Ms Luo gets sick. Like, really sick. Nothing SXY, in her limited medical knowledge, does helps her. The town doesn’t have a clinic, and the nearest one is a while away. Not only that, they don’t have the money to go. SXY can see only one way to help her friend- go to the one place that (probably) wouldn’t turn her away for being a criminal when there’s a life of the line. CQM.

Cue a travel montage of SXY (who has limited mobility), Ms Luo (who is deathly sick), and LBH (who is ten), trying to get to CQM before it is too late.

They do make it there- only to be stopped at the stairs. They aren’t stopped by an actual person! They are stopped by the actual stairs. SXY can’t walk them. Ms Luo can’t walk them.

That leaves LBH, ten and scruffy and probably looking too thin, to be the one to climb the giant staircase, up to the sect in the heavens.

The last thought I have of this au is the funny image of whoever happens to be at the top of the stairs that morning, being greeted by what looks to be a street urchin tell you that his mother is the long thought dead SXY and that she’s down the stairs, along with his other mother (by the way, he has two), and both are dying. Would you believe him?

the washer woman lore in dbd is literally so fascinating to me like she knows all of humanity sins and fears and yet she still tries to help them. she just wants to clean up all the blood and help everyone she can. she can sense your need and even though she’s struggling with her own pain and despair she still genuinely wants to help whoever she possibly can. you’re washing and washing and your hands are still red you help who you can but it’s never enough.

The washer woman's riddle being about Monty being torn back apart and tooth face ripping out the ground to take Charles and Edwin is obvious now but it was such good foreshadowing. All it took for her to get what she needed was a push to fight for the people she loves, I love Crystal, I love this show

How old do we think Tragic Mick is? His backstory makes me think that he has been around since the beginning and the birth/existence of walrus-kind, but he has only been looking for the washer woman -- local legend -- for 50 years. Is he not very old actually? Did he only hear about the washer woman 50 years ago? Was he happy in his existence as a man until 50 years ago? What is the tea Mick I'm desperate to know

Interesting that the Washer Woman gave Binghe a jade Guanyin out of all the deities she could have chosen. We know that Guanyin is the goddess of compassion and mercy but, interestingly, she is also titled the Bestower of Sons.

"Another reason for the tendency towards a feminine representation ... in China has to do with the fact that the Chinese often prayed to Guanyin for children, especially sons. This sometimes worked, and statues of Guanyin in certain temples would become known for their ability to bestow sons... represent[ing] Guanyin as the "Bestower of Sons."

Maybe Guanyin became a household favored deity not only because the Washer Woman prayed for and wanted to bestow mercy and compassion on her son but also as some kind of gratitude for her having found her miracle baby.
