Support a 16-year-old and her sick parents 🏥🍉🙏🏻

The landlord of the apartment that Eslam’s family have been renting has threatened them. He saw her talking about the looming eviction on her twitter, and he has realised that she has people who are supporting her and donating to keep her family safe. Someone miraculously paid the $2k rent for December, so now the landlord is trying to extort this family for $6000 in rent debt. He initially gave them a week, after seeing the outrage on twitter, he demanded that she stop talking about him and the rent money, in exchange for giving them until the end of January to pay the $6k. Eslam and her family are terrified of this man. Her family all told her to remove her posts and not to mention this on twitter. She gave me permission to post this on here. I am incredibly worried about them, as the landlord clearly intends to extort them for as much as possible. They have no tent and no material to build one. The apartment was flooded yesterday and now Eslam’s father is getting sicker. He has been disabled and bedridden from untreated diabetes. He is now vomiting and very dizzy. This family urgently needs our support 🙏🏻

This was already a dire situation with the exorbitant rent, now things are even worse.

They have only received $5 since the new year. Any help is greatly appreciated.

type 2 diabetes can be treated without insulin. im just on metaformin and some other medications, no insulin pump/injections yet thankfully

OH this ask reminds me to mention I've been looking at cat diabetes from the corner of my eyes as I work on 4435435 other things (send help)

Cat diabetes has very different trends than human diabetes, so I'm trying to hit a 'balance' between reflecting it for the diabetic human beings in the audience, versus the accuracy of cat diabetes

Because, Type 2 Diabetes in cats is treated the same way as Type 1-- insulin injections. Unlike humans who can take oral supplements like metformin, pancreas-affecting medications have a weird quirk in felines where they cause the cat pancreas to throw a tantrum, say "I DUN WANNA" and swap over to Type 1 Diabetes.

Meanwhile if you just treat Type 2 Feline Diabetes with insulin, the cat pancreas can sometimes go "oh oopsie woopsie" and just... stop having diabetes.

Why, you ask, you beg, does the cat pancreas act this way? Science doesn't know. Their organs are just jerks.

So that leaves me sitting here considering what to do-- because Metformin specifically is derived from Goat's Rue. Naturalized basically everywhere. Dangling right in front of my nose is the easy pharmacognological basis of Metformin, the specific thing that the Type 2 Diabetics in my audience have been telling me they take, and this solution is so simple it's almost painful.

But off in the horizon looms Type 1 Diabetes, which logically would be the one way the cats would want to treat all forms of diabetes... and I still need to work out how exactly they're going to get this INTO the patient while still being canon-compliant.

The earliest IVs were made of bladders and feathers, incredibly crude but still effective, and both of which are easy to get... maybe a cat was taken by a human and given an IV injection and that's where they got the spark of the idea? Long ago?

And making insulin... I've found some absolutely fascinating things about the early production of insulin, but the problem is the chemical separation of animal insulin from the digestive juices produced within the pancreas.

I think a cat with their sense of smell just doing dissections, with a LIIITTLE bit of an extra stretch, could tell there was something different about the islet structures inside of the organ... but how would they know the pancreas is connected to the development of diabetes? Would they be able to experiment enough to find out that freezing the pancreas separates the digestive enzymes from the insulin?

My name is Eslam, and I am a 16-year-old from Gaza. I am reaching out to you during a time of profound hardship, as my family and I are currently displaced in Khan Yunis due to the ongoing conflict. The violence has upended our lives, making it nearly impossible for me to continue my high school education and leaving us struggling to find a sense of normalcy.


This is my brother Mohammed, a renewable energy engineer who graduated just days before the war started. He dreams of continuing his education with a master's degree in Malaysia. My sister, Insam, also a renewable energy engineer, lost her job because of the war and now wants to move abroad to find new opportunities and rebuild her life.

My father suffers from chronic diabetes, and we can’t find the necessary medication for him, which makes me fear losing him at any moment. My mother has high blood pressure, and we struggle to provide her with the medicine she needs. She also requires a blood pressure monitor, but we have no money to buy one. On top of that, we’re dealing with skin conditions caused by poor hygiene and malnutrition.

In the midst of this chaos, we encountered Peace, a brave cat who has become a symbol of hope for our family. We rescued her from a displacement camp after she emerged from the rubble of her former home, where her owners tragically lost their lives. Adopting Peace was not just an act of kindness; it was a step toward healing for both her and us.


However, Peace is suffering from severe psychological trauma. The sounds of war have left her frightened and anxious, and she needs regular veterinary care to help her cope. Unfortunately, obtaining such care is increasingly challenging in our current situation. The local veterinary clinics are overwhelmed, and the cost of supplies for her care has skyrocketed, making it difficult for us to provide the essentials she requires.


We also face difficulties in ensuring that Peace has enough nutritious food and litter. The ongoing conflict has led to soaring prices for basic necessities, leaving families like ours struggling to make ends meet. Every day is a challenge, and while we do our best to care for her, our limited resources often make it feel impossible. It breaks my heart to see her suffer, and I often wonder what more we could do to help her heal.

Despite these challenges, Peace has shown incredible resilience. When we first brought her home, she was terrified and hesitant. It took time for her to trust us, but slowly, she began to find comfort in our presence. There were moments when she would curl up beside me, purring softly, and for those brief instances, the weight of the world felt a little lighter.
