There is nothing so affirming and life saving as leaving home and being loved at face value by total strangers for who you are

#im losing track of the genuine interactions ive had since i arrived that have all just been #so loving in so many small ways #from so many people #who have no reason to be kind or loving or to return kindness when it is offered to them #and yet they return it and offer it with such genuine joy #these are the kind of things that will save your life. i truly believe that. almost moreso than the deep network of friends you build #that's important but it becomes an echo chamber if you don't step away #and remember that you exist outside of it and the world sees you for you and not what the people back home need you to be #want you to be expect you to be #and maybe even love you in entirely platonic little ways for it #i will expand more later i am attempting a minor digital cleanse while here. there will be a nola series next week once i have processed.#but oh. i just took the slightly longer route home so i could hit Frenchman in hopes of catching a second line #followed them till they looped back to chartres and made my way home #which is a room with a kitchenette and bath in a railroad just north of st claude. by the tracks.#the bars here are more scattered. neighbors dives where everyone knows everyone and their business.#and yet they've seen me going back and forth the last two nights and days and so. they greet me warmly. wish me safely home.#one auntie blesses me with her vodka soda as i pass before blessing the two men leaving the bar. everyone laughing.#ill remember iggys fondly even if i never step inside.#a block from home a gentleman on his porch singsongs a hullo to me. i do my best to parrot it back around the spliff i lit two blocks ago.#he asks to buy a cigarette off me. regretfully im smoking my last but i offer my vape if hes open to weed. its shameful and i crack a joke #something about kids these days but it seems easy. like neighbors chuckling at midnight passing smokes over porch railings.#we talked briefly as i showed him how to use the vape. about our dinners. the storm coming in. legalization.#he asked me if i needed anything in turn. the conversation was plenty i told him. which sounds cliche and someone will say this is fiction.#but it doesnt need to be fiction to be a story about a simple moment of connection and love. i could list a dozen stories like this here.

"A story doesn't need a theme in order to be good" I'm only saying this once but a theme isn't some secret coded message an author weaves into a piece so that your English teacher can talk about Death or Family. A theme is a summary of an idea in the work. If the story is "Susan went grocery shopping and saw a weird bird" then it might have themes like 'birds don't belong in grocery stores' or 'nature is interesting and worth paying attention to' or 'small things can be worth hearing about.' Those could be the themes of the work. It doesn't matter if the author intended them or not, because reading is collaborative and the text gets its meaning from the reader (this is what "death of the author" means).

Every work has themes in it, and not just the ones your teachers made you read in high school. Stories that are bad or clearly not intended to have deep messages still have themes. It is inherent in being a story. All stories have themes, even if those themes are shallow, because stories are sentences connected together for the purpose of expressing ideas, and ideas are all that themes are.

theres actually no rules to transitioning and youre allowed to want contradictory things for your transition. it's fine if you only want some of the changes that come with hrt and take preventative measures for the rest (like wanting bottom growth but not body hair or vice versa). you can want to have vagina AND a dick. you can be a woman and want top surgery, or wear a packer. you can be a man and want to have a pussy. you can change your transition goals one or a million times or not have any goals at all and just take things as they come or as they feel right.

there are no rules.

Lmao so I just had the weirdest art commission process I've ever experienced. All I did was ask them, on the platform where I encountered their art, if they did commissions. They said yes, asked for details and reference photos bc it's that kind of art. I talked to them a bit, sent them some pictures, expecting them to... like... come back to me with payment info?

But they just started working on it. By the time I realized they were doing this, they'd already started - and this is a PHYSICAL ART PIECE, SOMETHING THAT USES ACTUAL MATERIALS, SOMETHING THEY WOULD HAVE TO SHIP TO ME.

Just got photos of the final outcome, it's beautiful and reasonably priced and we're paying for it, but like... man there are some steps in between someone asking "hey do you do commissions, here's what I'd want from you" and actually making the art, namely... ANY DISCUSSION OF PAYMENT.

In the artist's defense, I get the sense their first language might not be English, and their art is good and well-priced enough I'll probably commission them again one day, but boy that commission process could've come with a little less "oh shit you're doing it already? but what do you even want as payment...?"

changes and trends in horror-genre films are linked to the anxieties of the culture in its time and place. Vampires are the manifestation of grappling with sexuality; aliens, of foreign influence. Horror from the Cold War is about apathy and annihilation; classic Japanese horror is characterised by “nature’s revenge”; psychological horror plays with anxieties that absorbed its audience, like pregnancy/abortion, mental illness, femininity. Some horror presses on the bruise of being trapped in a situation with upsetting tasks to complete, especially ones that compromise you as a person - reflecting the horrors and anxieties of capitalism etc etc etc. Cosmic horror is slightly out of fashion because our culture is more comfortable with, even wistful for, “the unknown.” Monster horror now has to be aware of itself, as a contingent of people now live in the freedom and comfort of saying “I would willingly, gladly, even preferentially fuck that monster.” But I don’t know much about films or genres: that ground has been covered by cleverer people.

I don’t actually like horror or movies. What interests me at the moment is how horror of the 2020s has an element of perception and paying attention.

Multiple movies in one year discussed monsters that killed you if you perceived them. There are monsters you can’t look at; monsters that kill you instantly if you get their attention. Monsters where you have to be silent, look down, hold still: pray that they pass over you. M Zombies have changed from a hand-waved virus that covers extras in splashy gore, to insidious spores. A disaster film is called Don’t Look Up, a horror film is called Nope. Even trashy nun horror sets up strange premises of keeping your eyes fixed on something as the devil GETS you.

No idea if this is anything. (I haven’t seen any of these things because, unfortunately, I hate them.) Someone who understands better than me could say something clever here, and I hope they do.

But the thing I’m thinking about is what this will look like to the future, as the Victorian sex vampires and Cold War anxieties look to us. I think they’ll have a little sympathy, but they probably won’t. You poor little prey animals, the kids will say, you were awfully afraid of facing up to things, weren’t you?

reveal of my gordon hlvrai costume project, now that about half of it is done! this is cardstock and glue and tape and more glue and paint and velcro. and 2 gloves (one hand-sewn)

i got started sometime in early-mid fall, but i committed to making it work with cardstock in january- it was originally meant to be a sizing test before construction with eva foam over the summer. then i realized how expensive thatd be, too much pressure for a form of craft ive never practiced. im pretty amazed with how its come together, even with the large seams! during that whole time when it was unpainted (started painting two weeks ago) there was no way to tell

#thank you sketchfab thank you blender thank you pepakura #school library printer… you were necessary but i dont appreciate that i had to pay per page despite my tuition #i started this because theres a tradition of wearing whatever you want to graduation at my college. ive thought abt how cool itd be to wear #an hev suit like gordon hlvrai.. hlvrai has been important throughout my whole time at college. that plus the stem degree im going for makes #hlvrai the most fitting thing to homage with my outfit #*so important to me #the support of my friends was the last push i needed before research #i havent seen anyone else go for the in-game low poly look for the hev suit! multiple tutorials out there (as expected)#but all i saw involve eva foam and molding. most of them were based on the half life 2 suit which. yeah. that one seems more desirable for #cosplay #lucky that this way was much more simple because its also the most in-theme!#hlvrai #half life vr but the ai is self aware
