What's it worth?

Ugh! We're working on clearing out our storage unit, and it seems like every single box is filled with memorabilia from all five of us. It's my fault for holding onto so much, but every little thing is loaded with a memory. Memories that are not there for the taking, memories that are embedded in these objects.

After having my kids provide input through zoom, photos, or in-person visits, and putting my collecting husband through the torment of making choices, I now have a bunch of stuff to either give away or sell. (I have already decided, without looking at comparables, to donate the doll-sized currency and the large glass gem.)

What to do? Search online for values of comparable objects and then decide to donate or list.

1. That little vintage doll from Germany has some value, maybe $15 if I am lucky so I think I will list it.

2. And what about the Pez Dispensers? I often read that some are worth thousands! Fingers crossed!

Eh? I think I'll donate the Pez.

3. The retractable sewing measuring tape looks promising. But mine is not in as good condition so I think I will donate it!

4. What about that Hard Rock Cafe pin? Here's a black version that sold last April so I think I will list this.

5. What about these Monopoly pieces. I have no idea how old these are but these sold so I will list these as well.

6. And finally, the Keith Haring Pin. I could not find any 'sold' listings on ebay but I did find these two current listings. I know we bought this early so I assume it is from the late 1980s and I am also going to assume I could make 20-30 for it so it too will get listed.

All in all, I have spent approximately 30 minutes researching, and if I sold everything I hope to sell, I could earn up to $75. Next step is to get these listed in the next few days.

But first, I am off to the beach!

so today i was in my tiny indiana town getting mexican food and i saw that the little vender mart that ive never been in was open, so me and my dad walked in. i didnt know that it would have the best beatles memorabilia collection ive ever seen

THE WIG!!!! IN ORIGINAL PACKAGING 😭😭. i encourage you to zoom in on these pictures, i kept finding more crazy shit the more i looked.

there were a bunch of tiny things too, prices were incredibly reasonable surprisingly enough

here’s what i walked out with for only FIFTY DOLLARS. everything is in excellent condition. here’s some close ups:

Sun Catchers: Art or Kitsch?

My newest acquisition is this lovely sun catcher. I picked it up at The Trove in Old Saybrook, Connecticut. Serendipity led me to its discovery as I almost overlooked it. While checking out of the store, I finally looked up and there it was, hanging in the window. I was told it was made by a late, local artisan. If you recognize the work, please let me know who made it.

The Owl and the Pussycat I had never been attracted to sun catchers until my sister sent this one to my young children back in the 1980s. We spent many a morning reciting the beginning of Edward Lear's poem (The Owl and the Pussycat went to sea in a beautiful pea green boat...) I had thought of sun catchers as Disney memorabilia or holiday decor, a stained glass Santa Claus or a Thanksgiving Turkey.

The above was made by Glassmasters based in Macomb Township, Michigan and is dated 1980.

I should have known better. I was schooled in stained glass by my tenth grade history teacher when we studied art from the middle ages. But I saw those beautiful windows as art and sun catchers as kitsch.

And then, when I was getting married in 1975, my dear friend and boss Fred R. Siegle (The Profile Press) and his wife Else offered me a choice of a wedding gift between two objects. One was a piece of stone carving from a lintel or doorway and the other was the roundel above. I took the roundel. I was surprised when I visited The Cloisters to see similar roundels displayed in the windows.

And finally, my garden ornament that hangs in my bedroom window.

None of these are offered for sale in my shop but I am looking for more and will add them to my inventory when and if I find more.
