Long ass post about The Penguin on Max and specifically Sofia Falcone. SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

I can't continue posting about The Penguin without bringing up Cristin Milioti's INSTANTLY ICONIC take on Sofia Falcone. Her arc perfectly mirrors Oz's in almost every way. Oz is introduced as a sympathetic and charming, albeit violent gangster, and as the show progresses, we see just how twisted, sick, and irredeemably evil he truly is. Whereas Sofia is introduced as a twisted and unstable serial killer fresh out of Arkham, and there is an ever-present tension and sense of danger whenever she shares a scene with Oz in the first few episodes. But unlike Oz slowly revealing himself to be a true monster, the more we see of Sofia, the more we begin to empathize with HER and FEEL HER PAIN and actually root for her success.

Her arc is tragic but her violence is cathartic. She doesn't deserve any of the horrible things that have happened and continue to happen to her. The writing is simply superb, always teasing an eventual true descent into evil like Oz, but she NEVER crosses that line despite all the motivation to do so. Plus, on a purely aesthetic level, she OWNS almost every scene she's in, and Milioti is masterful at reflecting the inner turmoil, rage, and trauma this character goes through. Also huge shout out to the wardrobe department for making almost all of her looks fucking STUNNING.

Laura LeFranc pulls off the ultimate trick in drawing us in with Oz's undeniable charm while also forcing us to be wary of Sofia, so by the time the last few scenes in the final episode play out, YOU feel just as BETRAYED, GUTTED, and HORRIFIED as poor Vic in his final moments when you realize Oz truly had you fooled. I was almost in literal tears when Sofia took one last deep exhale in what she thought was gonna be her final breath and escape from the horrors, only to have Oz shatter that dream as well by having her arrested and ONCE AGAIN framed. I was FUCKING furious, I can't remember the last time I felt such passionate rage for a character I started out rooting for. Masterful writing, masterful performances, a true masterclass in almost every way. My ONLY wish now is to see her and Zoë Kravitz's Selina team up and bring that monster down, like Batman can help if he wants but he would honestly just get in the way of true justice with his whole "no killing" buzz kill rule. So fuck it, give me Selina Kyle and Sofia motherfucking GIGANTE teaming up to rain literal hell upon anything The Penguin touches!

Okay a loose Recent Reads roundup:

Birds of Prey: Sirens of Justice: so I was lured (tricked) into reading this as Gail Simone wrote one of the stories, even though it, sigh, contains far too much Harley Quinn due to movie synergy. The Dinah and Helena banter is decent, but otherwise this felt...aggressively fine. The Helena story is very pat in terms of how people tend to write Huntress shorts, though I guess it wasn't 'Helena worries about a student' this time.

The Question: The Deaths of Vic Sage: very much in conversation with O'Neil's run, of course, and also clearly reacting to contemporaneous US racial discussions. Shifting Myra to be the Mayor's sister not wife definitely alters her position in the narrative, particularly in terms of her obligations and response to situations. It is incredibly bleak in places, but that simply reflects the run it is based on and is a tribute to.

Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen: This is definitely for the Silver Age fan. Matt Fraction manages to string together solving a complex assassination plot over 12 issues by telling the story in short, 2-4 page sections that wildly jump around the timeline and are framed by 'the many ridiculous things that have happened to Jimmy Olsen'. I have absolutely no handle on the canonicity of some of this, particularly the extended Olsen family, and not knowing probably makes this read more easily. Looking at it as a whole, I'm impressed how well Fraction stitched what was effectively episodic 2 page fills into a complete narrative. The energy of the story is relentless. Best read in small doses.

Batman: Pennyworth R.I.P: god this comic could have been so much better than it was. It’s fine and accomplishes exactly what it was intended to do - tell a story of how Alfred influenced and looked out for each of Dick, Jason, Tim, Damian and Barbara - and sets everyone up to be mildly pissed at Bruce. But just for one example, it would have been HUGELY more powerful if they’d been able to use Dick, with his memories just restored, facing the fact he wasn’t there when Alfred needed him and his last interactions were so impersonal and spent pushing Alfred away.

Catwoman 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular: again, underwhelming. Tom King played shipper and wrote his version of how the Helena Wayne story should work; the Dixon story felt 90s appropriate but the art was dire; Brubaker’s felt like a missing scene to his run; Dini’s honestly wasn’t up to the standard I’d hope for from Dini. The art pieces were great though; a lot of good commissions.

Robin 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular: I cannot work out who chose the covers used in the issue, which swing between 'iconic' and 'reminding everyone ASBAR exists was unnecessary, DC'.

Generally: they did manage to round up fairly iconic lineups for most of the stories, with some chopping and changing for a few.

Wolfman got another run at trying to frame the 'Dick quits v Bruce fires him' debate; Dixon and Grayson both submitted literal fills (Dixon's is a scene immediately after Nightwing #19 1996 and before #20; Grayson's is at least just an extra story that fits into #1-12 of her Titans 1999 run on a day all the second stringers didn't come to work). I don't actually have a problem with any of these - they're nice additional material, but mostly more of the same. Seeley & King's suffers from the usual Seeley problem for me where it would be vastly improved by having a different focus; but it does feel straight out of his Grayson run, with everything that implies (down to the St Hadrian's student I wish was not present). All of the Dick stories are basically "we got the team back together" creative line ups.

Jason, in contrast, makes it really obvious that nobody can define a definitive Jason run, and so gets the tiniest story with Winick and Dustin Nguyen. I checked, and Nguyen did draw part of UTRH, but I wouldn't have associated him as a character-defining artist for Jason. The story's cute. Winick sidestepped having to commit to anything about his opinions on post-Flashpoint Jason direction.

Tim got Adam Beechen (which honestly makes me happy, I don't care about anyone else's opinion) and luxuriates in Tim having to play civilian; Tynion gets a Rebirth story that I can't quite work out his timing on (it's supposed to be a prequel, but Dick is already back in costume as Nightwing and talking to Tim, suggesting that several issues of the Rebirth Nightwing take place significantly before 'Tec #934) that is a classic 'Tim tells everyone how he feels about his brothers' story. I realise everyone boring has complained about Tim calling Damian a 'horrible gremlin' but the thing is you see I can only read nicknames like that as full of affection. The back and forth is an important part of their relationship, as shown by Damian snapping 'you're only listening to the insults'.

Steph gets her 71 days as Robin slightly padded out and Amy Wolfram manages to pick up Willingham's tone pretty well; I suspect she liaised with Damion Scott quite a bit on this piece.

Damian has a Super Sons piece from Tomasi, because it's the most lighthearted option available and it sells very well (it's sickly sweet). Which was probably the right call as the other piece is clearly written by Robbie Thompson to accompany his Teen Titans run and for the downward spiral going on there. Which is honestly a bit of a pity for Damian, given everyone else got feature pieces from favourite runs, and he got the 'this slots into your current story' piece.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the new actors from their other works (Suzie Yeung as Yuffie in Final Fantasy VII Intergrade; Alejandro Saab as Yuri in Fire Emblem Three Houses and Three Hopes; Dawn Bennett as Female Shez in Fire Emblem Warriors Three Hopes; Allegra Clark as Dorothea and Shamir in Three Houses and Three Hopes, "Boss" in AI: The Somnium Files and Iori and Chihiro in 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim; and especially Zeno Robinson as Hunter in the Owl House, Goh in Pokemon Journeys, Fogado in Fire Emblem Engage and Hawks in My Hero Academia) and am so glad they’re getting more work in what are some major roles.

It’s just that the voice cast of the Persona games are so intrinsically linked to each game due how they give the performances so much focus, which will make it be hard to get used to; especially because a lot of the performances from the original Persona 3 are so iconic to their actors as some of their best work, namely (for me personally) Liam O’Brien as Akihiko, George Grant as Shinjiro, Michelle Ruff as Yukari, Tara Platt as Mitsuru and Karen Straussman as Aigis.

Again, this is good news; I just feel sad about saying goodbye to the original Persona 3 cast after having them for so many years since 2007 and getting so attached their work. But, after so long, looks like Akihiko’s “I’ve been waiting for this” will finally be gone.

Okay but I can't deny that I do love this trio: two superhero uncles and one superpowered niece

Arrow and Question mentoring and trying to protect Kara are wholesome while bickering and insulting one another is another level of comedy gold. I hate how Supergirl arc ended (in my headcanon she begins a relationship with Stargirl and they go on double dates with Fire and Ice) but while it lasts, it's awesome

Also DCAU Green Arrow is the best version ever and you can't tell me otherwise

rating the justice league's theoretical fits for the met gala:

batman: 0/10 doesn't show up no matter how much his kids beg him to. on an unrelated note bruce wayne has fallen down the stairs

superman: 4/10 kryptonian fashion is cool but this is the guy who put on a wallmart uniform to go to a double date with catwoman. i don't trust his fashion choices

wonder woman: 100/10 amazing spectacular showstopping. she's wearing themyscira's hottest ceremonial armour and showing so much muscle it's a miracle nobody has fainted yet. this look becomes an entire generation's gay awakening. and it's also confortable enough to kill enemies on!

flash: 6/10 it's not very impressive but it's fun. he's not afraid of wearing vibrant colors but on very basic pieces. i think he's the kind of guy who would wear a red tux and think he has made some kind of point. but again, fun

cyborg: 5/10 vic is a rare combination of jock and nerd and unfortunately that isn't good for fashion. like he could pull something if he tried, he has the figure and the face, he could totally wear a suit with cyberpunk accents, but unfortunately he doesn't feel confortable taking the risk so he sticks with his prom tux. shame

aquaman: 10/10, 16/10 if we're talking jason momoa's aquaman. like yeah people might say he's the dorkiest superhero but wait until he shows up in a luminescent blue suit, no shirt, tits out, blue coral and silver jewelry, shark teeth earring, hair in a messy bun, iridescent eye makeup, queen mera as his date wearing a dress made out of actual waves. god i'm so bi

green lantern: 3/10 he follows the theme but it's not a great outfit. points for trying

green arrow: 11/10 and it pisses EVERYONE off. most of his points come from coordinating with dinah and from being the sluttiest bitch on the gala. he's here to have fun and show hole and by god he will deliver

black canary: 67/10 what can i say? she's a punk rock icon, she wears fishnets to work, she's not afraid of taking risks because she knows whatever she tries she will ace, that's her superpower. oh and ollie is her armpiece so that also counts.

martian manhunter: 2/10 you can't just show up in your work uniform, it doesn't matter that it's composed by a blue speedo and a red harness, it doesn't count. next time get m'gann to help you out man

shazam: 0/10 is a kid, his fashion sense comes from tiktok, no i won't allow it

I wish this Justice League movie could’ve held off until we got some other heroes such as the Green Lanterns, Hawkgirl, and many others.

Yes, the movie was long but what needed to be expressed was. As we already the Snyder Cut wasn’t supposed to be seen because a father simply wanted to grieve the death of his child. I’ll once again reiterate what @verified-villain-fxcker you don't have to like the film but at least give it the benefit of the doubt from its predecessor. For me, I did enjoy watching his version, but let’s be honest what he who shall not be named did was just fucked up.

I FINISHED SEASON 3 OF YOUNG JUSTICE AND I HAVE THOUGHTS! Spoilers for s3 ahead obviously.

Okay. I loved the new characters. Violet is iconic, Forager is our unproblematic king, and Brion… I did love him before the last episode. Also I love Tara. Love her character. She’s so sweet and didn’t deserve this. Vic was great too. One thing I don’t dig is the time skips between every season. I get attached to these characters only to have them pushed to the side for more characters. I love all the characters but please can we just have some continuity?

A problem I had with this season is that there were so many plot points and so many different angles. In one of the first episodes they kind of led with the whole Vandal Savage backstory and I thought that would continue throughout the season. But it didn’t. And they would introduce a problem in an episode and then not continue the plot in the next episode. I was confused when there was the sudden Karen and Mal focus. I’m very happy for them and they’re great but what did they have to do with anything?? I get that Karen messing with her baby’s dna is kind of giving more info about meta genes but it still was kind of confusing.

This season was definitely a lot more mature. We saw Violet’s face burn off, their throat slit, ect and it seemed a bit too graphic for a kids show. Also when Vic got crushed by the thing, we literally saw his insides. And the flesh monster that Klarion made was truly terrifying. There are apparently lines they didn’t cross with Tara’s character. In the Judas Contract movie, it implied that there was some grooming/sexual abuse there between Deathstroke and Tara. They obviously didn’t add that to the show.

I loved seeing how much all of the original gang has grown. We got to see Dick a lot more this season which is great. I love him. Connor is so mature now! He’s grown so much since s1 and I’m so proud of him! Also KALDUR IS BI???? They show him and Wyynde kiss and don’t address it?? I thought they were gonna have something go on between Dolphin and Kaldur. Wyynde came out of nowhere. Still very happy though. Kaldur is great and Wyynde seems good for him :). I love that Megan and Artemis are just everyone’s moms. Its very cute.

I love Garfield’s growth too! He is an absolute legend. We don’t deserve him.

Jefferson deserved better, okay? Also fuck Dr. Jace. I was on her side! And i know that was the point. But why did they have to do that to the kids and Jefferson? Absolutely devastating. I thought is was sweet how Static stayed with Jeff near the end when he was upset. I can’t wait to see how he runs the league! He deserves it! He’s gonna do a great job!

I am very pissed that they didn’t introduce Raven in the last episode! It’s literally called Nevermore! It would have been so poetic! I appreciate they had Jefferson quote part of it but we need Raven!

That’s all the thoughts I have right now! I’d be happy to discuss anything about it!
