what's your dissertation about? you mentioned it in the siltcord and i'm really interested

oh my god hey I'm so happy you're interested! broad strokes because I've only been working on it for a few weeks but: the current theme is 'resistant landscapes' (both man-made and natural) in the later writing of Shirley Jackson!

Essentially, my main thread is that Jackson had two parallel strands to her work, which as far as I can tell began kind of interrelated but then diverged quite significantly? She's probably best known now for The Haunting of Hill House and to a lesser extent We Have Always Lived In The Castle, which are these. weird surreal psychological horror novels, engaging explicitly or implicitly with the supernatural, and centred around introspective, strange and sometimes deeply misanthropic female characters from isolated social units with dysfunctional, possessive relationships to each other.

Aaaaand then on the other hand she was known for being a 'happy housewife' who wrote these whimsical, quasi-autobiographical stories about all her children and how hopeless her husband was. These were popular too. Betty Friedan called her out in landmark 1963 feminist manifesto The Feminine Mystique for essentially spreading patriarchal propaganda.

The interrelation between the two is really jarring, because in one family is a source of horror and tragedy and in the other it's a source of, like... laundry. And Jackson's home life wasn't everything those stories made it out to be-- her marriage was unfaithful, her mother could probably be fairly called emotionally abusive, and as I talked about on the siltcord, she developed severe agoraphobia which often left her housebound.

So, yeah. My plan is to explore the depiction of families as constructed social units in dialogue with the environments they are constructed in in that work. Obviously a lot of that is relation of house to family, in the context of which Hill House is especially rewarding to consider, but I also want to look at relationships with nature and urban environments (especially in the context of settler colonialism and how that has had an enduring legacy in Jackson's particular part of New England), xenophobia (largely in regard to class, though racism and anti-Semitism are presences in her writing), domesticity and the idea of the housewife, and how horror relates to All Of This. The ideal of making a home within a hostile environment and of that environment turning on you, essentially.

I don't yet have particular areas of focus within that broad umbrella, but I might update with bits and pieces about it as I work? I don't really talk about academic stuff on here but I am very much Critical Literary Analysis Guy and I do also post relentlessly about haunted houses as a concept so if people would be interested in it maybe I will

anyway if you've read this far I recommend Horror in Architecture: The Reanimated Edition (2024) by Joshua Comaroff and Ong Ker-Shing which is a book about how horror movie tropes can be mirrored in built environments! I'm reading it right now and it's conceptually fascinating plus fairlyyy comprehensible by academic standards (if a little dense) if you, like me, are a Fool who knows nothing of architecture. very good also for getting to look at pictures of some of the most Fucked Up Buildings (affectionate) you've ever seen.

Hey beastie, im sorry if you’re too swamped with requests but i had this remembrance of a fic from way back when. I think it was a oneshot but essentially it was Desmond returning back in time after touching the eye but it was to an alternate timeline/universe where it’s ABO but his biology is still standard with no second gender. Just curious on ur take and how you can spin this with his ancestors-thank you!

I have not read that kind of A/B/O story but let’s see how we can make… Desmond suffer (affectionately).

So let’s set up some backstory first: Desmond’s world does not have the biological markers of A/B/O. This can either mean (1) Desmond didn’t time travel, he was kicked into an alternate universe where this world has A/B/O so Desmond has no idea about it or (2) by the 21st century, A/B/O markings have already been ‘wiped out’ by the passage of time and the ‘evolution’ of mankind (that may or may not be part of the Isus’ calculations) so Desmond has ideas about it but doesn’t necessarily understand it.

Backstory (1) would give us a way to explain to the readers how A/B/O works in this world using Desmond’s lack of knowledge as our basis as well as give Desmond a lot of scenes of just being confused or forgetting about it. Backstory (2) would give Desmond a bit of a break as he’d have an idea of what the hell is happening all around him.

Regardless of whichever backstory we use, we will of course make Altaïr, Ezio and Ratonhnhaké:ton ‘alphas’ in this one.

Alright, let’s see how we can screw Desmond up with each of them XD (warning… this also talks about their sex life… a bit)

AltDes:

So, first of all, Altaïr and Malik are alphas and Kadar is either a beta or an omega. Abbas is also an alpha (although it would be funny to make him a beta) and Al Mualim is also an alpha. The main idea is, the further Desmond goes back in time, the more alphas and omega there are.

Desmond would confuse Altaïr a lot because he doesn’t feel the urge to be aggressive around Desmond for not bowing down to him that he would get when he’s around other alphas but Desmond isn’t submissive like an omega or deferring to him like a beta. Desmond treats him like an equal without acting like he needs to show he’s better than Altaïr which has always been his problem with other Alphas (even Al Mualim make Altaïr’s alpha instincts want to show dominance).

However, Desmond also smells… really, really nice. Altaïr can’t describe it and the only explanation he can give is that Desmond smells like ‘home’.

Desmond, on the other hand, has no idea what the hell Altaïr is talking about concerning scenting and such because Desmond doesn’t smell anything funny. Even when he tries to smell Altaïr (which both confuses and also arouses Altaïr), all he can smell is the oil he used for his hidden blade, the smell of his robes and Altaïr’s own scent which just… smells fine? Like… it’s okay?

Altaïr falls for Desmond because of Desmond’s dismissal to the hierarchy that has long ruled over their second gender and finds himself attracted to Desmond’s personality. He falls in love because Desmond is his equal and there is no need for either of them to even try to take the other down to be the one on top.

Although, this is one where Altaïr usually tops, mainly because Desmond knew he prefers it. Desmond is also the only person Altaïr is willing to bottom for.

EziDes:

Ezio would actually assume Desmond is a beta that is using a scent blocker for a while.

He would only realize that Desmond isn’t a beta because of Desmond does his own thing and just raises an eyebrow whenever Ezio tries to use his ‘alpha voice’ to get Desmond to try and cooperate with him.

Ezio would be the one who would have the hardest time with his feelings for Desmond because he was raised with the idea that alphas must mate with omegas (something that this world’s church advocates for and the Auditores were raised with those ideas) and he wants the kind of alpha-omega marriage his parents had (if you want more drama, ‘enter Lorenzo’ to make Ezio question just how 'perfect' his parents' marriage was XD).

After Ezio learns that Desmond is the one Minerva is talking about, he gets this idea that Desmond has no secondary gender because he’s a divine being. This gets more complicated when they learn that Isus don’t have secondary genders as well (and that the Isus made humans with secondary genders to make it easier to control them but they only made betas and omegas, the first alpha was Eve who ‘transformed’ when she became a hybrid). It's after Ezio learned of Desmond's connection to the 'Isus' (sorta) that Ezio realizes why Desmond smells like 'hope' to him.

Ezio finally gets his head out of the sand after Desmond confesses to him that he loves him and Ezio realizes that he doesn’t want an alpha-omega marriage anymore. All he wants is a future with Desmond by his side.

These two are the ones that tend to switch a lot. Even as an alpha, Ezio is game with anything as long as it’s fun and pleasurable. He’s more of a power bottom though because he can’t help it.

ConDes:

Ratonhnhaké:ton actually thought that Desmond not having a secondary gender is a quirk that happens with the colonizers. It’s only when he sees that the other colonizers think Desmond is weird that he realizes that Desmond is an ‘anomaly’.

He doesn’t care about it though because Desmond has been a loyal friend since they met and, sure, he knows Desmond isn’t saying everything but he trusts him.

Ratonhnhaké:ton is actually the most relaxed with Desmond because he doesn’t feel the urge to dominate that is common with alphas. It’s just… peaceful. And that's what Desmond smells like to him: 'peace'.

This is more of the side of friend to lovers kind of deal with both of them not realizing that they’re falling in love with one another until they’re in too deep.

Ratonhnhaké:ton would also be the one to have the least amount of angst about Desmond’s lack of a secondary gender as he believes in the actions people make, not of what they’re supposed to be.

Desmond honestly forgets about the whole secondary gender thing the most in this one because Ratonhnhaké:ton doesn’t try to flaunt it or anything. He thinks a lot of alphas are just dicks, forgetting that it’s encoded in their genes to want to be the dominant one even in normal conversations. The way some of the alphas do try to do it? Yeah, that’s just them being dicks, has nothing to do with being an alpha.

Haytham thinks that their relationship is strange though and might even think it’s because of how Ratonhnhaké:ton was raised (although both Ratonhnhaké:ton and Desmond aren’t sure if Haytham is insulting Ratonhnhaké:ton’s village or Achilles?) but he tries to be polite to Desmond when he and Ratonhnhaké:ton are working together.

Desmond gets into Haytham’s nerves a lot, mainly because Desmond is doing it on purpose because he knows Ratonhnhaké:ton’s feelings for Haytham (and that childhood desire to have a father) stops him from saying what Haytham needs to hear.

The Homestead doesn’t care about how strange Desmond and Ratonhnhaké:ton’s relationship is as all they care about is that the two are happy (plus the two of them helped everyone one way or another so they know they’re good people)

Ratonhnhaké:ton has never thought about bottoming before but he wants to try it for Desmond. It just takes a bit of a time for him to ready his ‘heart’ though.

Sorta dark addition:

So there’s this thing called ‘bitching’ which is mainly used to make an alpha into an omega and it’s usually in the realms of noncon or really questionable dubcon. I’m just thinking if it’s possible to make Desmond who has no secondary gender into an omega by ‘bitching’ him? Probably not because his body doesn’t have any marks of a secondary gender (unless…) so maybe the help of a POE would be needed as well (like the Shroud that we know deal with the physical body). Of course, this is a slippery slope that can either make this idea quite dark (and, ngl, it would work well with a dark!Altaïr who wants to have a family with Desmond) or this has to have Desmond’s full consent first and the main idea isn’t that Desmond wants to be an omega to preserve the hierarchy or order of things or whatever but because they want to have a child of their own. Of course, the bitching doesn’t have to happen to Desmond in this route… XD

the 2012 turtles meeting, say, the rise!tmnt, the bayverse!tmnt, or the mutant mayhem!tmnt?? versions of the turtles whose splinters never had a serious love interest prior to their creation, whose love and attention was always solely focused on them?

i'm thinking about bayverse!splinter, who sacrificed himself for his boys without a second thought, who finds out about another version of himself who has all but pushed the turtles away, the precious turtles who are the light of splinter's life

mm!splinter, who literally was desperate to keep his beloved sons protected from possible dangers, who faced his greatest fear in order to help his boys, seeing how broken, how tired they are.

rise!splinter, who, despite how it seems, can and will put his boys above everything else, who cannot even fathom the idea of not wanting his sons around, of falling back into his life before the boys, seeing these versions of his sons be so easily abandoned

just... the 2012!turtles meeting different versions of themselves, and meeting different versions of splinter, and being so fully prepared to recieve that same cold shoulder, only to be gathered into warm embraces, and have gentle, fatherly reassurances whispered to them.

and they're rightfully hesitant, they're unsure, because having your father immediately turn to his original family without a second thought leaves some lasting trauma and pain, but they can't resist falling into the different splinters' arms, pouring their hearts out as they cry and listen to advice that only splinter can give.

and somehow, idk maybe the donnies make dimensional transport watches bc that's definitely a thing that would happen, so visiting the different dimensions, and hanging out with the different versions of themselves + splinter becomes a weekly thing. and slowly, the 2012!tmnt bring the other versions to their own world, introduce them to xever, and chris, and april, and casey, and the mutanimals, and it slowly spirals into all of them getting together and hanging out.

and the 2012 boys slowly start to realize that they do have a family. it may not be the one they thought they had, but it's even better, and full of people who truly love them.

Hey, omegaverse people! Any ideas for terms for in-universe sexualities like an omega who is only attracted to other omegas or an alpha only attracted to other alphas? Or should I maybe just give up on trying to come up with in-universe terms and just go with real-world ones like gay, since attraction is based on secondary genders in this thing I'm working on, so a male alpha attracted to a male omega is technically straight, I fucking guess

Chapter Seven

In which Rizeth plays dress-up with his boy, and Ashenivir makes some fun new friends

Apparently, serial novels were a popular pastime in Waterdeep. Ashenivir, exploring the market whilst Rizeth was off running more mysterious errands, had found a whole stall of them and, for a few coppers each, bought entirely too many. He’d made the mistake of starting Hard in Hightown on the way back to the apartment and the next thing he knew he’d devoured six of them, the last one ended on a cliffhanger, and it was dark outside.

“You can’t leave it like that!” He turned the book over, as if he’d find the rest of the story hidden in the back cover.

“What are you reading?”

Ashenivir nearly threw the book across the room. He’d been so absorbed he hadn’t heard Rizeth come in.

“A serial—Tethras ended it in an irresponsibly irritating place, and…” he glanced at the dark window, “…and it’s too late now to go back to the market to find the next part. What are those?”

On the table, Rizeth had laid out two packages. One Ashenivir had seen before—it was the one that had vanished into the bag of holding the previous day—but the other was new. Rizeth carefully folded back the paper, revealing a glint of metal—another toy, maybe? Hopefully better made than the gag had been.

“Come here,” Rizeth said. Ashenivir left his book on the couch, piled with the other five, and went curiously over. He caught a brief glimpse of cloth, silver-grey and midnight blue, before he was ordered to strip.

He was out of his clothes in a heartbeat, grateful for the heating runes Rizeth had, as promised, put up that morning that allowed him to do so without a second thought for the freezing weather outside. Excitement buzzed in his chest. It had to be a new toy, and his Master must be finished with his errands for the day, and though it was dark, it wasn’t all that late, there was time yet before dinner. Ashenivir started to kneel, but Rizeth caught his arm.

“If you do not like this,” he said, more seriously than the situation seemed to call for, “you do not have to wear it.”

She allowed herself to eat, as intended. After all, it would be rude to take the food that she did and then not eat it. She would still be worried for the other girls, but she figured that they likely found various things to do to be able to keep themselves busy. She didn't mind that all too much, it makes things a bit easier for everyone.

Especially since Maika wasn't around, as much as she loved the girl. She tended to speak her mind just a bit too often for it to be safe to have her around with strangers in the home.

The woman was also keeping an eye on the workers, and occasionally, Chuuya himself. She new better than to do it too often, she just wanted to make sure everything was alright, and no one was sneaking off to nose in on anything. . .

Especially with one of the main ones being EGGMAN, but luckily they hadn't had such a big crisis during the holidays. Well.. maybe other than the smaller fights with badniks, but that was one least things to worry about. Outside of this, it's been rather peaceful.

could ren ever leave shining! - ?? technically, he does ... but only because sho leaves first. sho is the second-ranked host at the club, ren's rival, and technically a lot of times his love interest. when sho decides to leave hosting to pursue being a rental boyfriend, ren follows pretty soon after. he can't imagine being at shining! anymore without sho, and while they don't "work together" in the same way anymore, seeing sho leave inspires ren to do the same. does it interfere with that man's plans? not exactly. ren is free to act of his own will. however, ren always acts within the narrative, so ... the rental boyfriend service 'brilliance' is (more than likely) also run by that man. it's a primarily online service, so it's another sort of "faceless boss" situation. leaving the club does actually make ren very depressed. he misses the hosts, so he keeps in touch with them often. he worries about them, still tries to provide a "boss-like" persona for them to rely on, and sometimes comes back to help. satoshi is the one who takes over when ren and sho leave.

The scent of another wolf caught Jacky’s attention. It was very rare that he took his attention off of a fish he’d been eating, but the scent of any other wolf right now would do it for him.

A low whimper escaped him as he held onto the remainder of his meal close to him. Though he wanted to believe the other wolf - wherever it was - wasn’t going to hurt him… he couldn’t risk losing his food. Not now.

Though he managed to pick up the wolf scent, he was not aware that it was coming from someone so close by…

How could it be, when her family consisted of one other person and that person was... Carolina. Sure, she had a large extended family, younger cousins she hadn't spoken to since she was a child, but Carolina refused to go out of her way to connect with them, and it was... probably for a good reason, right?

Last year she asked to be put on the schedule, but this year, Bonnie was adamant on celebrating with the girls. Katie just couldn't say no.

Ian wasn't quite sure what to say to the guy. He wasn't exactly eloquent with words at the best of times, let alone in a situation like this. But he'd promised himself he was going to try. Maybe he could figure out how to conduct a personality transplant in the next five minutes. He looked down at his watch --- he was meant to have been there five minutes ago. He contemplated going home and giving it ago another time.

Being late was par for the course, with him. He was only ever on time when he was on a mission, and that was because the stakes where life or death. He sighed, getting out of his car. Best to rip the bandaid off now, rather than prolonging the inevitable. He'd have to meet this guy at some point, regardless of his conflicting feelings about the situation.

It had been a while since he'd been inside the walls of Avengers HQ. He tended to stay away from this place like a tentpole. He'd never really wanted to follow in Steve's footsteps and be an Avenger, he preferred to do his own thing. With shield and nomad. He didn't need a team. Maybe a part of him had never considered himself worthy of it.
