Leslie’s Brief, Beautiful Life by Ronald S. Coddington Via Flickr: Carte de visite by Van Doorn of Brooklyn, N.Y. Leslie Oliver came of age during the Civil War. She stares back at us with quiet dignity, and perhaps a hint of melancholia, in this portrait taken in her late teens. Born in Massachusetts, she was raised in New York where her father, Marshall, a Marylander, worked as a prosperous merchant. She remained single until the relatively late age of about 34, when she married Boston stockbroker James Gilchrist. The wedding occurred in September 1879. Less than two years later, in March 1881, she died of kidney disease. She had no children. I encourage you to use this image for educational purposes only. However, please ask for permission.
