Your good, she also played a character called Sage 5 on Utopia Falls. It’s on Hulu and only one season but I really enjoyed it.

Whelp, this was originally just supposed to be a reblog with nothing but the tags of the canceled shows and movie series I still enjoy, however, in writing the tags I remembered something. Young Justice.

Young Justice was a cartoon show originally from the early 2010's. It was canceled after one season due to a lack of toy sales, even though fan reception was overwhelmingly high. The actors wanted to come back, the writers, producers, animators and everyone else in production wanted a second season, the fans wanted to see more, but Cartoon Network canceled them. It was because of the LONG-lasting fans, and I mean LOOOOOONG lasting fans demanding more that the show got a second season like 5 years later or something around there. It has since gone on to have 4 seasons so far, all a few years apart from each other. Now personally, I haven't been a huge fan of the last two seasons, but I have liked a lot of aspects they have adopted and hope to get a season 5 because my love for the first two seasons (mainly the first season) is so strong I can't wait to fall back in love with this show.

My point is; our love for media, our connection to it, its impact on us, can be so profound that we shouldn't limit ourselves to loving something only within its time of popularity. It's a big problem in a lot of areas of life, from fast fashion to production companies only valuing movies from their box office success rather than long-term success.

When we enjoy things and continue to create and share our joy of those things, we not only allow space for new people to discover and create their own bonds with that media, we can also sometimes create such a demand that we get more of that thing.

I don't wanna @ anyone because I understand how fast things seem to move in today's landscape of streaming shows dropping entire seasons in one day, and networks pumping out new series constantly to try to attract more subscribers with no intent to actually maintain those shows over time but I just saw someone self-deprecatingly lament that they are still thinking about a show that ended almost a year ago, making fan art and playlists for it, and I want to be very clear:

you can still create fanworks when it comes to old media!! PLEASE do!! there are always going to be new fans who will appreciate it, and veteran fans who are dying for new content and new perspectives. also, less than a year is NOTHING. the original Star Trek series was on TV six decades ago and there are still people losing their minds over it, writing stories and reblogging gifsets daily, and that's only one example.

a fandom lasts as long as there are people who love a thing, even if it's only a handful of people. love what you love and write and draw and make gifs and playlists about it!

it's so fascinating to see how one of bram's ways to signal that the characters are modern and in tune with new science ends up horribly dating the book and making them all look worse to modern readers (i'm talking about the physiognomy thing)

Yes, absolutely! It's really interesting. In this case it's much worse because physiognomy is such an inherently racist and flawed idea. And that feels much more like something they could have realized. It forcibly reminds modern readers of the different culture these characters belonged to and the prejudices they either actively held or at the least passively accepted.

But it's not the only instance of the passage of time making certain details feel a lot different than they were meant to for contemporary readers. For example, Jack's phonograph is pretty new and exciting technology. Mina gets excited to see it today! But within the 1890s the shift from wax cylinders to flat discs began to happen, leading to gramophones and eventually record players. At the time this story is set (likely somewhere in the 1893-1897 range) the two technologies co-existed, but records were what eventually took off on a massive scale and phonographs with cylinders are seen as more of a prototype. This is something that might be less notable to modern readers since both are old technology to us, but it's a shift that happened not too long after the book was published. And of course the famous blood typing discovery...

When it was originally published, several critics disliked the book for being too modern, something they thought didn't suit a vampire story. Of course, the very contrast between modernity and ancient monsters was intentionally a major theme. And yet the passage of time changes our perspective on that theme. It's really fascinating to consider this stuff from 100+ years on.
