Who is Higgins!Master?

A fan-created (Nicole being said fan) incarnation of the Master, existing between the Simm and Gomez incarnations (the regeneration took place after the events of The End of Time), and based on the actor Paul Higgins, originally inspired by his roles as Jamie McDonald in The Thick of It and Michael Dugdale in Utopia but having grown into a so very much his own character since then.

What is the Higginsverse?

The canon surrounding Higgins!Master — the impact his very existence has, parts of his story that are not just him and what grows from those parts, and even just things that were created as part of his canon/story but they and his existence don’t mutually require each other, it’s just that he is our canon.

Some of the things the Higginsverse has:

Civil disillusionment and turmoil gradually turned civil war on Gallifrey in the aftermath of the Last Great Time War. And yes, the characters from the Gallifrey audios are there.

Workplace comedy featuring the Master, Seb, and Dr Chang (all three of them are fucked up and evil)

Macqueen!Master as the earlier incarnation in the events of The Doctor Falls. We also cannot perceive Jacobi!Master outside of that context anymore.

The Master in the Eleventh Doctor’s era! Occasionally.

And, occasionally, that same Master visiting the other Doctors & their surroundings. “I’ve been up and down your timeline”.

To those who have read Lords and Masters from The Missy Chronicles: Yayani lives. And so much more.

Ace in the Centenary special is from a different timeline than the Gallifrey Ace, but in the Higginsverse, it’s the Gallifrey Ace. And she and the Master have got a lot in their shared past.

Some plot points and character dynamics born from an incorrect quotes generator.

A (complicated) friendship story between the Master and Narvin. It came into existence completely unexpected and unintended, and even more unexpectedly and unintendedly became one of the core things in the entire story.

ok here’s a weird thing i totally forgot/didn’t think about:

in the stars that rise at dawn, yenatru is reading a book on theurgy written by the angel israfil, that claims humans can’t change their bodies with theurgy, though they can put manifestations very close to their body, as yenatru does. but, eshva, yairen, that erl-king-kin who was mentioned, and i think others mentioned in chapter quotes? have done flat-out body modding. so......is this just intentionally written misinfo/ignorance, or author mistake? i like the first idea because the quoted passages are written in such a dull way that i basically forgot it, and there Are examples of more clearly intended borderline-misinfo (like the header quote excerpted from a kid’s book describing fallen angels in an offensively twee way right after the chapter wwith lucifer’s harrowing desdescription of falling, and safirah strongly implies that holies are routinely described in horribly mangled and incorrect ways as well).

i think this world is intended to be a utopia and in some ways it is! but.....also in some ways it isn’t at ALL, mostly in this way, where instead of genuine deep acceptance of strangeness or attempts at understanding, things in most in-universe sources are described in gentle soft ways that yes shut down prejudice and oppression pretty hard, but also shut down a lot of other things (this is the unexamined but shadowy lurking root of the first book’s cast’s misery (eliya/yenatru/lucifer/hannusa) or inability to explain their non-misery (tamar), and i think the most likely reason that:

almost no one has been able to self-identify as a god, especially not without being told by someone else, and those who have or know about it (like jibril and the rest of the 2nd book cast) are keeping it a secret from common human knowledge and from g-d and from other angels

There are multiple quotes from the art book like >

“Hiccup thinks of Toothless as a human friend but has come to the realization that he’s not. Toothless is a wild animal.”

“Hiccup building the tail for Toothless so he can fly solo is slightly naive.” “It’s like when your kids get the keys to the car.”

These quotes just feel like they’re just simplifying Hiccup’s and Toothless’ friendship and portraying it like a person and their regular pet animal when their friendship has shown to be so much more than that and contridicts all of the human-like intelligence that Toothless has shown in understanding Hiccup in the past two movies.

There’s also stuff about Hiccup being possessive of Toothless and the dragons in general that annoy me >

“ Though Hiccup has the best intentions in creating a dragon utopia, Grimmel brings up some interesting contradictions to this effort. Is it really normal for Hiccup to keep all the dragons to himself? Is he trying to change their true nature? Shouldn’t they live in the wild?”

As if the dragons are being kept on Berk against their will and they can’t just leave the island whenever they feel like it, the only dragon that can’t is Toothless and he intentionally destroyed the tail fin that helped him do that before and has never shown an interest in flying solo.

There’s also the quotes about the Deathgrippers, portraying the entire species as “bad” but at the same time having all of the Deathgrippers being held hostage by Grimmel and drugged into submission by him >

“This is the first movie where we got to think about creating “bad dragons.”

“When a bad human comes into the picture- someone like Grimmel- he can turn evil dragons into something even worse.”

You can’t say an entire species is “evil” just because of their diet and because they’re more aggressive than other dragons (especially if they’re now saying that the dragons are all just wild animals), in real life we don’t say that the majority of predators are evil just because they hunt and eat meat.

And then there’s all of the quotes about the development of the light fury and how they had to “make her feel like a female” and for some reason it’s “more difficult to create a female character than it is to draw a male. For a female, any incorrect line and the shape can go wrong very quickly.” They also didn’t want her to “fall too much into the reptilian category” despite the fact that she is a winged reptile.

Sorry about the amount of writing I wrote in this, a lot of these quotes from the art book just don’t sit right with me.

Even if you go along with THW’s narrative and think it’s a fine movie, how can a fan look at the art book and not feel even a little bit upset about the things written in it?
