I'm a first time reader of this series. I gave so many complaints about how Rose acts. She's abrasive. Unlikeable.

The writing is dreadful. So in an effort to understand the characters better; I watched the movie. Zoey played Rose so well 💕 now I can read her as Zoey, much easier.

And Dimitri was 😍 chefs kiss.

I read the vampire academy books when I was like 18? So I thought was Rose was amazing and I identified with her so much. I LOVED the taboo relationship between her and Dimitri.

I’ve nearly finished the second book and let me tell you, as an adult - do not got back to read your fav YA novels (unless it’s hunger games - Katniss is 👌🏼) Like legitimately- they’re young adult for a reason.

Rose is insufferably immature… the fact that Dimitri is so into her makes me side eye him quite a bit because the only thing that’s brought up in every single chapter is how tiny and small and hot she is. All her decisions in the second book particularly are all based on her being stupid teenager who think she knows better. Why did she go after mason and the others?? Why didn’t she tell the guardians?

The books are entertaining enough that I’ll probably still read the third one because they’re short and honestly it’s really interesting to see what I used to love and enjoy as young person.

It’s like when watching the little mermaid as a kid and being all like “her dad is so mean, she just wants to be with eric!” Only to realise that she’s 16 - a different fucking species AND she gets married at the end AT 16 years old.

Vampire Academy books: what do you do when your best friend since childhood gets a boyfriend and like, you're not in love with her and you understand he fulfils a part of her life you can't but at the same time you can feel her slipping away a little and it's just sad? And you don't want to be sad because she's so happy but you feel like you're losing part of your friend's life and you don't really know how to feel about it.

If I had a nickle for everytime one of my favorite book series was adapted into a single mediocre movie with bad writing but great casting choices that had all the sequels cancelled AND a mid teen show that's fine on it's own but horrific as an adaptation that also got cancelled AND had Dominic Sherwood playing a main character.... I'd have 2 nickles, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.

Rose and Lissa from Vampire Academy. This artwork was for the endpapers of the German edition of Shadow Kissed. Their friendship is such a big part of this series so I really wanted to play with that, Rose being shadow kissed and how Lissa saved her

And I think really my favourite thing about vampire academy is that Rose is constantly having a horrible time because horrible things keep happening and she responds to them instead of the narrative acting like it's just set-dressing. People die and it haunts her, she has to kill her enemies and it's never seen as a victory, it's always a terrible thing she was made to do too young. She never stops being scared of how dangerous everything is, she's trained to be a good fighter but she's terrified anyway and she fails a lot, and there's this atmosphere throughout of powerlessness and of loss and grief and fear, and of the world being much bigger than she really understands and the confusion and anger of being left in the dark. It's a surprisingly dark mood of worldbuilding and I really appreciate it.
