how do you clone a fey? that's trick question; and fey love those!
@the-navistar-carol (<333) brought up a good point while I was talking about my changeling danny au with her -- Dani! How would she exist in this au? Danny's a changeling - a fae. How would Dani, a clone of him, be created? How do you make a fey? Not through any means that Vlad is doing; you can't make a fey through unnatural means, considering the Fair Folk are nature. And Vlad's not a fey himself -- he's a halfa, even if he could make a fey, it's not in his best interest too. He's a powerful ghost, but even the weakest fae can overpower the strongest ghost. He won't want a clone of Daniel to be more powerful than him.
(In a three tier hierarchy it goes Ancients -> Fae/Mythos -> Ghosts. They all live in the Infinite Realms, but on different Planes. The fae live above the Ghost Zone in the Fey Wild, while the Mythos live beside the Wilds or down in the ghost zone depending on where they are. Places like the Frozone, the Athens Acropolis, and other such large islands climb throughout all three Planes.)
(While Ghosts can travel into the Fey Wild, its generally advised against as the ectoplasm tends to manifest differently there due to close contact magic. It can make it rather disorientating for a ghost, and as human spirits, the Fae living there would jump them faster than they could blink. So unless you're willing to play mind games with 'steal thy name eat thy face' fae, most ghosts keep out of the way of the Wilds. Fey can travel down into the Ghost Zone, they just don't bother.)
That's of course, not taking into account if Vlad even knows Danny's a fae himself. Vlad doesn't ring me as someone who really cares much about ghost culture or the going ons of the GZ. He might be aware that fae exist, but the moment he realizes he can't use them for personal gain he just doesn't bother with them. The risk is greater than the reward, and he'd rather not get eaten. But lets assume he's aware by now that Danny is fey, and has to take that into account while cloning him.
So, how does Dani exist? Good question! Honestly; i'm not sure. She might not exist at all, or if she does, she's more halfa than fey. Vlad would need a lot of human dna and ectoplasm to balance out all that fae magic. He manages to steal DNA from Jack and Maddie to do it, and since Jack's fey ancestry is very dormant its much easier to use alongside Danny's DNA.
In turn, it results in a little girl whose more human-ghost hybrid than clone. With that little extra boost in fey magic making her not a fey, but still relatively powerful. Dani is less of a clone and more of a lab-grown little sister. It's a rather tedious, complex process that has Vlad tearing his hair out trying to figure out. But he does eventually figure it out.
#dpxdc#danny fenton is not the ghost king#dpxdc crossover#changeling danny au#danielle fenton#danny phantom#still no mention of DPXDC yet so i'm adding the DP tags if thats alright lmao#how do you clone a fey? trick question! you can't. you can only make something that's not-quite fey but has ties to them.#dani's fey ancestry is an ounce of water compared to the bucket of everything else. which is more than the drop in the pond compared to jac#but not quite as powerful as changeling daniel. whose more fey than human at this rate. which is very fun to think about in terms of#his rogues haha. imagine going into the human realm about to cause chaos only to come face to face with a baby fey. a changeling.#i'd simply pass away a second time. where is your parent. human raised or otherwise?? are they nearby??? shit i thought fey hated urban#cities. what are YOU doing here baby man. im going to get eaten holy fuck. that's so many teeth.#. oh. oh you think you're a ghost. hm. hmhm. i can work with that. lets just. make sure you keep thinking that okay :) great :))#like jumpscare dude. i just saw my afterlife flash before my eyes. hello unsupervised fey child. holy fuck are you teeny tiny.#vlad probably uses some of his own dna to get the halfa effect so really dani's more of a lab grown *half* sister. Changeling!Timâs childhood is... actually kinda horrifying, when anyone looks into it.
(CW for forced medical procedures, and abuse in the form of temporary imprisonment. Also, minor self-harm, and⌠I donât know what you call âeating something that will make you sick so your parents donât get mad at you,â but I know it ainât good.)
Tim had pretty pronounced fangs when he was younger, which his parents were just planning to wait out... until he was fast coming up on 10 and it was clear Tim wasnât going to lose his teeth. A quick x-ray proved that Tim didnât have adult teeth to grow in, just the one set he came with, and the fangs were only getting more obvious. His parents found an orthodontist willing to yank the fangs & wire up the rest of Timâs teeth with braces to force them to look smooth & even as he grew up. (The doctor kept the teeth as a curiosity, and a decade later Damian will track that doctor down to steal them back.)
Something even Tim didnât realize until he had to undergo a full Justice League-grade medical exam in preparation for becoming Robin, is that the tiny points on his ears arenât natural. They have no idea what the ears of the baby Jack & Janet received looked like, but Timâs points are actually mostly scar tissue. (Bruce puts it down as âa cosmetic procedure not dissimilar to ear cropping in caninesâ and tries not to feel sick.)
(There was also a period where the Drakes did an awful lot of research into cosmetic eye surgeries, but they eventually gave up. Apparently, it was a bigger concern that their son might end up blinded than that his eyes glowed in the dark and/or were the wrong color.)
As I mentioned before, Timâs parents trim his thorns so that nobody goes to ruffle Timâs hair and realizes heâs not human. He... actually started doing it himself when he decided to become Robin, because Tim has seen Bruce ruffle Jason & Dickâs hair so many times and didnât want to hurt Bruce (or experience the absolute agony of having a thorn get caught in Bruceâs gloves and end up ripped out of Timâs scalp,) as well as not wanting to give away Timâs own inhuman nature with the single most obvious trait he has. (When the rest of the family find out, they are horrified and insist that Tim stop doing that. Instead of hair-ruffles, Tim gets hair-strokes that go only in one direction, bumping harmlessly over the curved outer edges of his thorns; itâs actually very soothing for both parties. Everyone absolutely uses Timâs thorns as a stim toy, as long as Timâs okay with it.)
Timâs parents also hire an in-house barber to cut Timâs hair, so they can make sure itâs âproperly disposed of.â (Timâs nightmares always smell faintly of burning hair.)
Tim wears fancy dress gloves to all dinners, because with the uppercrust you never know if someoneâs going to bring out the real silverware. (If someone tells him to take off the gloves or Timâs skin happens to brush up against somebodyâs jewelry, Tim just sorta has to... deal. Itâs rude to rush out or refuse your hosts, after all.) (Fortunately, Dick and the Titans all prefer reusable plastic silverware. And as soon as any Bat finds out about Timâs fae nature, Wayne Manor quickly switches to stainless steel.)
Itâs nearly impossible to know if a meal was prepared with iodized salt or non-iodized salt until itâs already in Timâs mouth and the burning-itching discomfort of coming in contact with an anti-fae substance begins. Itâs rude not to at least try the food someone offers you, and itâs even ruder to just spit something out, especially out in public. At least Tim doesnât usually have to fake it when he says heâs not feeling well in order to stop eating. (Tim doesnât tell the Waynes about this until that medical exam, where he kinda jokes about being allergic to salt and someoneâs like, âWait, how do you eat? Everything has salt in it nowadays.â Alfred rather forlornly puts his sea salt up on the top shelf and buys a jar of iodized table salt on the next grocery run.)
Timâs blood is immediately identifiable because it has chloroplasts in it. No, heâs not actually a plant; yes, he can perform limited photosynthesis. No, Tim was not aware of this about himself, heâs never been allowed to give blood before, and like??? Sure, he figured out he was a changeling, but that does not immediately translate to, âOh, I should test my blood for plant cells!â
Timâs room doesnât look any different from any other boy his age... except for three nails over the door on the outside. For the iron horseshoe Timâs parents hang there sometimes, when they donât want him to bother them or when heâs grounded. (Thankfully, it's been very rare for Tim to actually be trapped in his room, as setting up a salt line on his windowsills has always been... well, he's not sure. A step too far, even for his parents? A step too many to remember and/or perform in the heat of the moment? Something they donât even realize is necessary, assuming the horseshoe prevents Tim from leaving the room at all rather than simply crossing that one threshold? Tim doesnât like to think about it. Tim typically stays in his room anyway when he feels the swooping nausea of it hanging over his door, if only so his parents donât find him missing and decide sealing the windows is something they ought to be doing. Trapped not by any law or binding ritual, but by Timâs own admittedly rare fear of consequences.) (After Tim is snatched by faerie hunters, Jason and Dick are the ones who search Timâs house. Thereâs a moment of silence when they find the horseshoe and realize what the nails are for. âI really hope I donât have to point this out,â Jason says, in the tone of someone whoâs going to do it anyway, âbut itâs never a good sign when a kidâs bedroom has a lock on the outside.â)Â

Fae Courts of the New World
Why is it that whenever fae courts show up in urban fantasy stories, they always seem to take directly from the classic European depictions. Where are the fae courts that have adapted to the Americas, and not even like in a modern sense. Hereâs a few possibilities:
Court of Dogwoods and Liberty: One of the original fae courts formed in the new world, the Court of Dogwoods and Liberty (CODAL for short) consists of fae who dress in colonial style and follow the guidelines of their founders: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all (and they do mean âallâ, none of that âspecial snowflakeâ crap).
Court of Pinstripes and Absinthe: A fae court enamored with the Roaring 20âs, COPAA consists of fae who party in style and class: nice suits, flapper girls, and high quality hooch (just be careful not to drink too much at one of their parties).
Court of Lawns and Suburbs: A surprisingly wide spread fae court, COLAS has several branches across America, bonding with different neighborhoods and act as supernatural HOAs (you do not want to mess with them).
Court of Phasers and UFOs: One of the more futuristic fae courts, COPAU model themselves after sci-fi culture, having a variety of advanced technologies such as scanners, laser guns, and spaceships (which, ironically, lead to them being mistaken for aliens and being the source behind several UFO sightings).

this is it, son (end of the line)
not a pride drabble exactly, but posting it here along with ao3. urban fantasy au, warning for captivity and implied dehumanization.
"I'm not in the mood for making deals," Sean mutters, turning his head as far away as the fucking silver collar will let him. It should be easier to ignore people with an eye missing, but he's still far, far too aware of the fae's gaze burning into him.
"Are you in the mood for prison, then?" Chen--the only name they've let anyone here have--shoots back. "For letting that FBI bitch put a muzzle on you tomorrow and dragging you off on a leash?" They lean forward slightly, iron chains rattling. "For leaving your little witchling out on his own?"
He's a wolf, not a witchling, Sean wants to snap, even though that's stupid, even though Daniel's both, even though the point is moot because Chen is fucking right. He makes himself look back at them, the glint of their glasses, their unflinching stare. He wonders, not for the first time, what the exact fuck they're doing here.
(if the stare makes his breath move a little quicker sometimes, if it makes him feel seen in a way that no one has except since he woke up here, if he can't stop staring at their callused hands and they smirk when he does, that's no one's fucking business, but his own. he's got enough bullshit to deal with already)
"I can't trust you," he points out, to them or himself he's not sure.
"And I can't trust you either," Chen says easily, their lips quirking into a hungry little smile. "But neither of us has much of a choice, do we?"
They're right, of fucking course. Sean grits his teeth, filed-down fangs just starting to ache with new life, and reminds himself that there's probably no way he can somehow get even more fucked over. And even if there is, Daniel's worth it.
"What do you need," he grits out, and Chen's smile unfolds into a brilliant, full-toothed grin.

kiss or kill
(âĄ) fandom: skz (âĄ) pairing: jeongin/hyunjin, minor hyunjin/felix (âĄ) rating: explicit (âĄ) on indefinite hiatus
To kill or not to kill, that is the question. When Hyunjin is told a human will fall in love with him, the answer seems so simple: death is the only option. After all, the bones of a lover give a bone faery more power than anything else in the world. As their prince, what else is Hyunjin meant to do?
Of course, he doesn't expect to fall in love with the human too.

i'm still thinking about the fae zedaph prompt so much that i have. an entire au in my head now. that i am now sharing, in case others are interested.
so the setting of the au is an intentionally kind of anachronistic blend of sci-fi and fantasy, and those things often come into conflict, with a lot of magic interacting badly with technology and technology interacting badly with magic. a vaguely earth-like setting from the near future, where there are robots and space travel and cybernetics, but ALSO a vaguely earth-like setting where there are portals you can slip through that will drop you into the feywild and there are magcial creatures lurking beneath the surface. the idea is like, if an urban fantasy had the 'urban' part set in a sci-fi world.
anyway, so zedaph is an ancient fey creature. a wild fey no longer really associated with either court, but at one point having belonged to the seelie court, zedaph mainly just courts chaos. he's PROBABLY some kind of archfey, but it's worth noting that even other fey aren't fully certain what zedaph is supposed to be at this point. see, in a move that makes almost no sense to a human, zedaph has started to get bored of the games of fair folk. he finds them too... predictable! and sure, to HUMANS the fair folk can seem chaotic and without rules, but to zedaph? he wants something NEW AND EXCITING.
too bad that these days, even if he IS invited into the human realm, it is a bit dangerous to navigate for a fey such as himself. his own deep connection to nature and the natural world makes it so he has some trouble when he's in the tall metal cities of the human realm.
enter: tango.
tango is an android built for... some purpose. he's not really sure what his purpose is, or if he still has one, which is kind of distressing, because his creator either died or abandoned him before tango was turned on. he likes building zany contraptions, sure, but he also sort of wants to search for SOME kind of meaning in his life, since androids aren't really built to be purposeless and that lack of purpose is starting to wear at him. and in another setting, this is a great start to a cyberpunk story about what it means to be human, but in THIS setting, tango accidentally proves he must be developing a soul when he stumbles through a portal to the feywild by accident and fails to find his own way out.
the good news for tango is also the bad news: he's not built for a natural place like the feywild. see, his creator had made him largely out of cold iron, and that, even more than any specific technology, repels fair folk magic. so the good news is that he is largely immune to fey shenanigans! the bad news is that the feywild itself is rejecting him, putting him in immense danger.
enter: zedaph, who is FASCINATED to discover that these days the humans are making machines with souls. zedaph, eager to discover something new, makes a bargain with tango: tango guides him in the human world so zedaph doesn't die of metal poisoning, and in return, zedaph guides tango whenever he stumbles into a dangerous supernatural hotspot. look, zedaph's even making a fair deal and everything, since he can't just like, steal tango's name and force him to, on account of not even tango knowing what his true name would be! the two of them shake on it, and as such, a bargain is struck between both android and archfey.
they both find each other surreal and baffling but are ALSO each other's best friends in an equally baffling and surreal world.
impulse comes into this story later--after whatever the first few adventures tango and zedaph have are, exploring both realms together to try to find something new and exciting for zedaph and something to give tango purpose, the amount of magic tango's being exposed to finally takes its toll, and tango starts to malfunction. zedaph panics as he realizes all at once that he has a friend (thing he didn't know he even could get?) and that friend is in danger. also, uh, more importantly that deal. right. that.
naturally, he then kidnaps the first software engineer he can find. this is a proportionate response, right?
luckily the first software engineer he finds is impulse, and impulse is hardly like, normal, either. like, yes, he's a fully mundane human with only the world's most minor cybernetics, he's normal that way, the way he's not normal is that he gets kidnapped by a terrifying and awesome fey to fix a paradoxical android and goes "this is so cool. hi my name is impulse it's nice to meet you! aw, geez," and acts like everything is normal. neither tango nor zedaph are quite good enough at the idea of 'normal human' to dispute this, and a friendship is then born.
impulse serves as the fixer for a lot of their problems that neither tango nor zedaph are equipped to handle, but he's also like, he'd theoretically be the everyman if he wasn't busy going "every man gets whisked away by the plot of a philosophy major's dream every once and a while right" and going with the flow on things NO SANE PERSON SHOULD GO WITH THE FLOW WITH. he's just chilling in the world's least "just chilling" scenario.
so... there you go there's the ENTIRE TEAM ZIT AU that my brain spawned from the prompt "fey zedaph" i hope you enjoy,
#hermitcraft#zedaph#impulsesv#tangotek#team zit#like i have this whole vision in my head#MAYBE ONE DAY I WRITE MORE OF THIS BUT FOR NOW HERE TAKE THIS VISION#YOU MAY USE IT YOURSELF IF YOU'D LIKE TOO I DON'T MIND.

Modern Fantasy Monsters: The Workplace
Fae asking for two or even more weeks off because they know that time is different in the fae realm. They have to calculate the amount of time off that they have to the days where they can visit their family back home. Fae: âSoo...Iâm asking for two weeks off of the project.â Human: âReally? Why? Two weeks seems pretty long.â Fae: âWell, fae time is different than human time. Iâm just telling you in advance if people start asking if I disappear for a few days.â Â
(The first isnât my idea it was a comic dub that I listed to) Mimics being used as office chairs to âencourageâ lazy workers to do their work. Also Mimics being great security guards since they can be used as living security cameras.Â
Elevators that are for larger species that can carry more weight than most elevators. (Industrial elevators?)
Doctor Vampires who know exactly what blood type a person needs or what kind of blood is in a pouch with a sniff. Vampire: âAh, yes. You have an AB blood type.â Human: âReally? You..uh.. didnât get up to check.â Vampire: âOh no, I could smell youâre blood from here. I can tell.â Human: âHuhhhh...â
Dragons resting on the top of office buildings sunbathing. Sometimes they like to rest their tail against the glass windows.Â
Special workspaces for certain species:Â -Spaces with water for Merfolk to work efficiently -Effective swivel desk so centaurs can sit comfortably (the same thing can be said for nagas so that their tail can be comfortable)
Magical compensation insurance: If you or a love one have been effected by a curse and or magic related accident you are entitled to compensation.Â
Ungodly coffee combination that some workers share across the office to keep them awake. Though some combination are not safe for human consumption unless they have a strong stomach.Â
Vampires who stay overtime to work since they really donât need to sleep. (Vampires have to be limited in the amount of overtime that they can do due to this little loophole. )

howdy!! two literal people have asked for some andreil rec so here they are!! my most favest fics EVER in the first 60 ao3 pages (I'll keep updating tho as I read!)
Not yours to bleed:
The Pros were never in the cards. Not for an ex-medicated alleged psychotic with a dysfunctional family and an Exy career heâd rather not have. But even if it wasn't his first choice, no matter what happens, it canât possibly be worse than that one fucked up sophomore year when he stood toe to toe with the Yakuza-and won.
At least, thatâs what Andrew thinks until a familiar face shows up.
Another Raven!Neil AU. Or, the one where the boys donât meet until the Pros.
Â
**Updates every other Wednesday, whatever hell may come.**
The Sun Still Rises:
Somewhere on the road, Mary Hatford gets pregnant with her second child. When she passes, she leaves behind not only Neil, but his toddler brother. Survival is difficult without also raising a kid. Worn out and desperate, Neil still somehow ends up at Palmetto, only this time, he brings his four-year-old brother with him.
TALE OF A MARTYR IN XII PARTS:
Neil closes his eyes and counts the things that he knows:
One: Death has a name.
Two: He has met Death before. Several times, in fact.
Three: Someone is trying to kill him. Permanently. But it's only kind of working.
Or, the one in which Andrew is the Grim Reaper, Neil is very, very good at dying, over and over and over again. They teach each other a few things over the centuries.
Hearthlines:
The Fae king and queens have gone away, closing the knowes behind them and abandoning their offspring to the mortal world. As the Fae have spread far and wide, their bloodlines thinning if not vanishing forever as they flee from mortal persecution... two Fae have found a way to reopen the knowes - Kayleigh Day and Tetsuji Moriyama. The Fae regroup once more, the balance of power shifted amongst them, and 'changelings' appear now and then in the mortal population.
Andrew Doe is one of those changelings, a young child suffering in the foster system, shunned by his peers for some reason and hearing voices in his head.
Alex - the latest name gifted to him by a charm - is on the run along with his mother from his father, using their talents as shadow walkers to slide between worlds and stay one step ahead of the powerful Fae. Except even that is not enough anymore. Except that's not Alex's only talent.
*******
An urban fantasy where I throw Fae, necromancy and magic at TFC characters, pretty much!
Scared to Live (But I'm Scared to Die):
Neil Josten goes to the Nest for Andrew, but he stays for a lot more.
~
"I'm sorry Coach," he muttered.
"For what kid?" Wymack shifted. "You've got to give me something to work with here."
Wymack watched the thin traces of sorrow as paper exchanged hands and he was looking down at a contract with the Edgar Allan Raven's.
"I signed them Coach, I'm sorry."
~
The one where Neil doesn't come back from Winter Break.
Amor Vincit Omnia:
âI said it already,â the man said, âYour cluster.â
âBut what does that mean?â Neil asked.
âIt means that you are no longer just you,â the man said tersely, âCongratulations.â
It didnât feel like anything worth celebrating.
A Sense8 AU where the foxes all share one subconscious and kick a lot of ass
The Real Thing:
Andrew was more than willing to turn down the Ravens' offer to be their newest goalie, unwilling to play five more years of Exy - let alone for someone with a too-sharp smile and a manic gleam in their eyes.
That was, until he realized that a member of their Perfect Court was his soulmate. (That was, until Riko Moriyama realized that Nathaniel Wesninski, the Ravens' #3 in waiting, was Andrew's soulmate.)
Andrew always knew that Fate loved tormenting him, he didn't need a reminder yet again via a too-attractive soulmate who appeared to loathe him. Yet things aren't always what they seem, especially in the Nest.
mad girl says she's wolf-proof:
Keeping her grip light on Ninaâs throat, Andrea drops her gaze to her plump lips. She smilesâcoldly, slowly. Fangs on fangs. Salt tombstones. It is not a nice smile, none of Andreaâs smiles are, but Ninaâs eyes are stuck in it regardless. âAnd I will answer, all the better to eat you with.â

lessons in caretaking:
Neil was acting shifty, and Andrew knew why; that motherfucker was leaving. Despite the promise between them, Neil was prepping to run. Andrew wasn't upset about that, not at all. After all, if notorious Neil "No-Swing" Josten needed to leave after Andrew admitted his desires regarding his proximity to Neil's shorts, who was Andrew to stop him. But that doesn't explain why Neil was stealing socks, or why he wanted Andrew's clothes.
Whatever. That was probably unrelated.
Sauntering Vaguely Downwards:
Theyâve known each other since the Beginning. Not the Beginning Beginningâthey didnât meet until after the War in Heaven, where they kept to their own sides, or until after the subsequent Fall. It wasnât even until after the Exodus from Eden, but only by a couple minutes. Theyâve witnessed the rise and fall of empires, sampled all the cuisines the world has to offer, and weathered several very silly fashion trends.
Andrew doesnât think theyâre friends, exactly, but it is natural to become accustomed to the presence of the only other being who has been around more or less consistently for six millennia. It wasnât anything more meaningful than that.
A Good Omens AU where Andrew is a grumpy angel, Neil is a sharp-tongued serpent, and it takes them literally six thousand years to figure out they belong together.

~Manhwa AU- A Fairytale Do-Over~ Pt 2
A/N: GUESS WHAT I FINISHED~? It's been hot as fuck over here recently and our house doesn't have central air. So writing has been hard, but I managed! Enjoy Malleus's huberous trying to hit him but he's still too short to get the lesson. Next part will be when Yuu meets Leona! Word Count: 3.9K Pairings: Yuu & Malleus (Their friendship has ended and he doesn't even know it), Sibling Malleus & Silver, Parental Lilia & Silver Prev / Next
The royal palace was massive, the size rivaling that of an urban village. And that didn't include the gardens, the patios, the woods attached to the grounds; the area was so large that there were even hidden places Lilia didn't know about. It was grand and it was lavished, all that an empirical bloodline could want. But it was empty, halls filled with priceless artwork and historical artifacts echoed with every footstep you took.
It was a sound Lilia had heard twice and never wished to hear a third time. First was when he was brought to the palace to be Maleanorâs playmate, second was the day after her and her husband's funeral.
And now, as he stared down a twitching servant, he was sure the palace had started to prep itself to return to such a state. He massaged his temples, taking a long and slow breath in, âForgive meâŚI must have grown hard of hearing in my ageâŚwhat did you say?â
The servant shook in terror, the silver tray he held in his hands jostling the letter on it. Lilia Vanrouge was retired as a general, but no one in the fleet of servants or guards dared to upset him. Even delivering bad news was seen as foolish and asking to be punished, âYu-âŚThe young miss Crowleyâs invite was returnedâŚunopenedâŚWe called their residence to askâŚbut the servants are stating thatâŚshe is ill and unwilling to attendâŚâ
ââŚâ
Lilia feltâŚflabbergasted. Yuu had attended Malleus's birthdays sick before, the adoration the young girl held for his charge gave her the will to suffer through hours of discomfort. No illness or annoyingly loud guests could deter her from spending time with her friend.
But even thinking that made him flinch. Malleus was notâŚreceptive to Yuu's kindness or shows of friendship. The young fae lord had found the girl to be clingy, annoying, downright a pain. But no matter how he protested their playdates, Lilia kept scheduling them because Malleus needed someone to see as his equal.
Though he was the crowned prince, a marvel to the fae and kingdom, Yuu was by marriage his cousin and closest of equal royal standing. Malleusâs father was not of noble blood, a fact that kept his and Maleanorâs love from truly being accepted by the council. Luckily, Levan had cut a deal with Dire, being formally adopted into the Crowley line in exchange for more loyal ties with the empire's crown once Levan and Maleanor had married.
A promise that was kept with playdates to the two housesâ heirs.
Lilia bit his lip. Though both of Malleus's parents had passed and such a promise meant nothing now, the Crowley line was all Malleus had in terms of extended family. The old fae wanted them to be close should misfortune fall upon him and leave Malleus without a proper guardian.
But Malleus was his mother's sonâŚ
Haughty, arrogant, and beautiful. He looked down on nearly everyone around him, deeming them weak and powerless against his steadily growing might. He skipped his lessons; half from his naturally absent-minded nature, mostly because he felt too good to listen to weaker fae try to teach him.
So introducing a magicless girl nearly five years younger as his equal did not go wellâŚ
Since their first playdate and Malleus had stomped back into the palace covered in mud, furious, he had simply despised the Crowley child. Yuu had merely giggled and asked to play with Malleus again, saying he was funny and she liked him. To this day, Lilia wasn't sure why Malleus had been covered in mud nor why he seemed to detest Yuu so much so quicklyâŚHe refused to repeat what happened and it only sent Yuu into a fit of laughter whenever asked. He wondered if he should have used his magic to see what had caused the issue when he still had the chanceâŚ
He sighed, picking the letter up and ignoring the servant's flinching when his hand drew near. Studying it, he marveled, it really was unopened. A part of him felt the claws of dread slowly wrap around his heart, his fears becoming realized before his eyes. Had Yuu finally had enough? Were two years of verbal abuse what caused the young girl to open her eyes to Malleusâs mistreatment and simply not return.
Turning away, he dismissed the servant and bit his lip again. Malleus didn't have other playmates. Malleus, like his mother, was feared by his subjects. A fact that made companionship more difficult than Lilia wished it would be. He wondered if he should visit the Crowley duchy, slip a tonic from the royal infirmary to have the girl healed in time for the party-
âLilia, Silver's fallen asleep again.â
Lilia looked to the doorway, his worries melting off his shoulders at the heartwarming scene.
While Malleus had created a type of feud with the Crowley girl, he completely adored Silver; claiming the boy as his brother since he first saw him sleeping in his bassinet. They stood in the opened doorway, Malleus in a more informal attire and cradling Silver to his front. The silver-haired nine-year-old fast asleep in the prince's arms releasing angelic snores.
Sighing, Lilia held his free arm out with a small smile, âBring him here, I will watch him while you finish your studies.â
Passing the sleeping child over, Malleus scoffed under his breath and rolled his eyes, âStudies. I have no needâŚâ His eyes catch the glint of silver in Liliaâs hand, âWhat is that?â
Lilia didnât have a chance to answer, Malleus reaching up and snatching the letter out of his guardianâs hands. Huffing, Lilia used his now free hand to properly hold Silver, âWeâve been over this; donât snatch things from people-â
âIs thisâŚYuuâs invitation?â Malleus stares at the envelope, turning it over in his hands and becoming bewildered as he notices it wasnât even opened, âHave youâŚNot sent this to the Crowleyâs Duchy yetâŚ?â His party was only a week away and the grand duchy was at least half a dayâs journey away.
ââŚâ Sighing, Lilia turned away from Malleusâs inquisitive eyes, âThe invitation was returned unopened. Word is that the young lady Crowley is ill and unable to attendâŚâ
Malleus stood in silence, staring at Liliaâs back before looking down at the letter in his hand, âOhâŚâ With a smile, he flicked the letter past Lilia and sent it directly into the lit fireplace.
âMalleus!â Lilia watched the letter burn, flaring green in a flash as the wax melted into the flames. Turning around he tried to pin a glare at the giddy preteen, âWhy would you do that!?â
With a shrug, Malleus turned around with a smile. Wiping his hands of the situation as though he had easily solved all his problems, âThereâs no need for it. Sheâs ill, isnât she? Plus, they returned the invite. Itâs within my right to do with it as I will.â He clapped his hands together as his thoughts ran wild, the very promise of Yuu not attending his party making him more and more excited for the event, âThis shall be my most wonderful birthday yet! Maybe I will be just as lucky next year and sheâll still be ill.â
Lilia could only frown as Malleus laughed, walking out of the room. While Lilia hoped the young prince would go to his lessons, he knew he was more than likely heading toward the gardens or to his growing horde room. Sighing, the bi-colored fae looks down to his sleeping child. It would all be much easier if he just placed Silver as the princeâs playmate. Malleus adored Silver, but Silver was quiet. Silver was so quiet. A fact that would only echo in this massive palace as the years go on. Lilia could only hope that heâd find a cure for whatever sleep curse affected his boy. Maybe Silver could be the bridge between the two; a thesaurus for two similar yet wildly different languages.
He hoped that Malleus wouldnât be too upset on the day of his party.
The servants would say the day of Malleus's party was divine. Not a tantrum, eye-roll, nor threat of permanent dismissal in sight. He allowed himself to be dressed easily in his outfit, black silks and furs, precious gems stitched to mimic the night sky their lands were famous for and a winding silver banded crown. Malleus looked like a prince of the infamous Noctorn Empire and he was excited.
He had talked Lilia and Silver's ears off at breakfast; his plans to speak to everyone for once since Yuu wouldn't be attached to his side and babbling nonstop. He didn't notice the concerned look in Lilia's eyes when he'd excused himself to use the emergency phone. Lilia called the Crowley duchy directly to ask if they were truly not attending the party. Crewel merely stating they had sent their gifts and wished Malleus a happy birthday in their absence. Yuu hadn't even been heard over the call.
As the beginning of the event drew closer, Lilia felt his nerves worsen, as if a looming threat was breathing down his neck and waiting to strike. A feeling that only grew stronger as Silver lost his fight with wakefulness, falling asleep a little after the first few guests started to populate the entry hall. Lilia had gathered the deadweight child into his arms, tasking Malleus to greet the guests alone while he placed Silver in a more docile environment until he woke up.
Malleus tried, he truly did. He spoke aloud and clearly as Lilia had always instructed him, head held high so that his chin and the ground were two parallel lines. He tried to shake people's hands, growing frustrated as they refused to release the brightly wrapped gifts to do such a thing. After the 6th awkward shuffle away from his outstretched hands he simply elected to not shake anymore of the lord's hands. After the 15th nervous and stuttered hello, he stopped greeting them too.
He huffed, mildly pouting as he left the entry hall, walking toward the guarded room that held his mountain of presents; gifts to be opened and cataloged once all the guests had left. Greeting people alone wasn't as fun as he imagined it would be. It would have been easier if Lilia hadn't left to tend to Silver. Lilia was a social creature in such a way that Malleus never understood, neither him nor Yuu made sense to him as to how they got people to respond so easily to them. But then again, the very thought of Yuu beside him and greeting everyone in his place made him more frustrated. The sight of her gift, as always wrapped in black and white with a bright green bow, only worsened his mood.
Slamming his hand into the brick, leaving behind Cracks and a medium-sized indent he made the choice to enter the banquet hall. (Unaware of the few cowering party guests slowly backing away from him).
The room was filled with people, fine fabrics swishing around the room in elegant dances. Looking around his enthusiasm dipped again. There were so many adults more than children his age, adults that would only give him a half glance and a respectful bow. Malleus walked along the edges of crowds, trying to see if any conversation piqued his interest or if any of the adults would glance his way to wish him a happy birthday. He received plenty of quick bows, long-winded birthday blessings with his full title. A few had even tried to start a conversation, beginning with a comment on their relation to his mother or father. Only to suck their mouths in like they had tasted the worst type of lemon flavor, remembering he never meant his mother nor his father. From there they would bow again and turn to scamper away into a crowd, leaving him alone again.
Just as he began to wonder just where Lilia was placing Silver, he saw someone who made his hopes relight. Another child his age was standing by a window, looking out the large stained glass with an air of boredom around him. They were a noble of origin from outside the empire, their clothing was brightly colored and heavily patterned. A crown of beads and braids kept dark brown hair neat yet wild, a pair of small, round lion ears peaking through. The hint of brown skin visible from the edge of their loose sleeves and crossed arms.
Gathering a bit of courage, swallowing to wet his mouth, Malleus walked forward. He smiled and tilted his head, tapping the other on the shoulder to gain his attention, âHello. Are you enjoying the party?â
The other boy seemed to startle, almost as if he had planned on being invisible for hours more and Malleus's acknowledgement broke his trance. The boy turned to him, showing his face was marred over one eye with a long thin scar, the bright emerald green slightly duller than the other.
Once he saw who was speaking to him, he frowned. Turning away and looking at Malleus from the corner of his brighter eye as though he was a bug, âGo away.â Short, simple, and sour.
Malleus startled himself. No one hadâŚever dismissed him in such a way. Even when Lilia sent him away to his own devices, He said as such with an air of teasing, jovial. ThisâŚthis was just rude. Narrowing his eyes, he stepped into the other boy's line of sight when he fully turned away, âWhy should I? You are aware this is my birthday party, arenât you? You should feel honored that I'm speaking to you.â
The boy scoffs, facing him directly and placing his hands on his hips. Smug, arrogant; he wasn't taller by any means but it felt as though he was looking down his nose at him, âWhy would I feel honored being spoken to by a lizard?â
ââŚâ Lightning flashed outside, bringing the already soft ambiance into a fearful silence, âA LIZARD!?â YOU DARE CALL ME A LIZARD!?â
âA lizard who throws tantrums at that.â
âLeona!â Two older men quickly rush over, looking similar to âLeonaâ with their attire, ears, and, face yet more alike each other with their matching bold red hair. The shorter, younger man had gripped Leona by the shoulders, trying to force the boy into a bow, âApologize! You promised you'd behave tonight!â
The older man, his red hair streaked with thin yet vivid lines of grey bowed, âA thousand apologies, Your Highness. Please forgive my youngest son. He is still recovering from an injury you see-â
âI don't care about excuses!â Malleus glared, stomping his foot as the lightning flashing again and sent the room into spasms of eerie green light. He pointed toward the scowling Leona, âHe called me a lizard!â
âMalleus, lower your tone. You are among company.â Lilia walked over, placing a hand onto his chargeâs shoulder and pulling him back as a physical reminder to calm down, âWhat's happened here?â
âIt seems my son-â
Scoffing loudly, Leona rolled his head back and spoke aloud, âI called the stupid lizard, a lizard and he threw a fit over it.â
âLeona.â The younger man strained, shaking Leona by his shoulders in an effort to physically shake the sense into him.
Lilia frowned, looking down his nose at the defiant child with lidded eyes, âThat's rather rude don't you think?â He looked from the corner of his eye, catching the eldest man's gaze, âDuke Kingscholar. I wasn't aware you were raising suchâŚbrazen children...â
The duke's bow seemed to deepen, âTruly, I offer apologies for every star in the sky. My youngest is recovering from an injury and fever. He isn't thinking clearly-â
The eldest brother leaned down, whispering to the sour-faced child while their father tried to save face with Lilia, âLeona, apologize. Dad's gonna make you sit in the carriage again if you don't-â
âFine then! I didn't want to come to this dumb party anyway!â
The duke sprang up, his face furious as he rounded on his youngest son, âLEONA!â
Malleus could feel the lightning crackle outside, the bolts dancing along the sealed windows in eagerness to strike Leona down, âHowâŚdare you!? My birthday party is the highest honor any could hope to attend, and you stand here, wasting it and calling my wrath!â
Leona scoffed, rolling his eyes before leveling Malleus with an almost arctic glare, âWho'd consider it an honor to attend a party of someone they don't even like?â
The eldest boy tried to pull his brother back, worry on his face as the lights along the wall started to flash and flicker with the green electricity struggling to breach the walls, âLeona. Enough.â
Malleus glared back, eyes almost glowing from his rage, âI don't care if you like me or not. I am your prince and you will respect me!â
Leona lets out a loud and sharp laugh, shaking himself free of his brother's hands to step closer to Malleus, âI don't respect you and I don't like you. No one does.â
âThat'sâŚThat's A lie! People like me!â
âOh, look around!â Leona gestures his arms out, only continuing when Malleus makes small cautious glances around the room, âNo one here likes you, they're all afraid of you! And you're too stupid to see it, you pompous motherfuc-â
Leona was all but snatched into the air, his older brother holding his body in one arm while the other pressed tightly to his mouth. He bowed, a mumble of his brother not feeling well before he quickly absconded from the area.
Duke Kingscholar sighed, offering one last apology and a birthday blessing before he followed his sons out.
Malleus watched them leave along with everyone else. And once the Kingscholars had left he looked around the room once more, a new feeling of a sinking stone growing heavier and heavier. No one would meet his eyes, nothing past an accidental glance before quickly bowing. No one other than Lilia came to his defense, every last guest letting him be berated and mocked by a spare. And for what? To stand at the edge of their tif and cower? ToâŚto look at him with fearful eyes?
Only once the Kingscholars left did he realize just how far away everyone else was in that moment. How even as the lightning cleared, the storm calming, no one dared approach him. No one dared look him in the eyes.
The party continued, the Kingscholars did not return and Malleus was happy for that at least. Leona wasâŚa form of abrasive that he didn't care to deal with ever again.
He thought this birthday would be amazing, the best of his short eleven years of life. Instead, he spent the night beside Lilia, holding onto his hand and refusing to look up. Not out of any true nervousness or shame. He justâŚdidn't want to see how no one looked his way.
They danced, they had a meal, they had cake. Everyone left after another hour of standing and talking. Were birthday parties always soâŚboring? Or was it just because it was his 11th birthday? Was it because Silver didn't wake midway through for cake cutting like he normally did? Was itâŚwas it because Yuu wasn't there?
The thought annoyed him. Yuu would have never left him alone if she was there, she never had any other celebration. Clinging onto him to greet guests, chasing him through the halls while the adults spoke and networked. A leeching shadow that no matter where he went, she would worm her way into the same place at some point.
âMalleus?â
The horned fae looked up, a half-asleep Silver holding the signature black and white present out to him, âDo you want me to have Yuu's present again this year? Father said she didn't comeâŚâ
ââŚâ Sighing, Malleus took the gift from Silver's hands, ripping the paper with an annoyed air to the act, âNo. I'll keep it. She's ill; there's no telling what kind of human illness you'll catch from whatever she's coughed on in here.â
Lilia sighed, but didn't speak more. Gathering the wrapping paper of the other gifts Malleus had opened and quickly discarded for not holding his interest. He watched his son yawn, smiling as he pointed to the small table with tea and two thin slices of cake, âSilver, have some tea and cake; it'll wake you up a bit.â
âBut, you said I can't have sweets past 9pm?â
âWell, I decided you can today. You normally are awake to have a slice of cake during the partyâŚâ
âI knowâŚI'm sorry.â
âSilly boy. There's nothing to apologize forâŚâ
As Malleus looked into the gift box in his hands, the sounds of his guardian and brother faded into the background, equally muffled by the crackling of the fireplace. Inside the present was a pair of oddly knitted tubes. To anyone else, they'd be a pair of hideous mittens for someone who didn't even have hands, but Malleus knew what they really were.
Yuu had asked him, earlier that season when he was again forced to have tea with her, if his horns ever got cold in the Winter. He had glared, telling her to not ask such stupid questions, having no time nor the knowledge to explain that his horns never felt cold in Winter nor hot in Summer and he didn't know why. An answer that seemed to have not satisfied the annoying girl, since she had made and gifted him a pair of unseemly horn warmers.
He held them in his hands, the knots sloppy yet tight. The pattern was off and he's certain there were two different shades of green in the same area. They were ugly, plain and simple. But they were something other than a grotesque or a gargoyle cruelly ripped from their post. Useless, priceless gems he had no need for or the rare foolish gift of iron weapons and accessories. The black yarn was too thick, almost swallowing the designs made with the green yarn. Both colors pressed so close that the black seemed greenish in the right light.
Just as Yuu's eyes would.
He knew the Crowley girl's eyes were black, a brown so dark and deep that they mimicked a starless new moon sky mixed with the dying breath of a sunset. But whenâŚwhen she looked him in the eyesâŚthey almost seemed to leech the green from his own.
ââŚLilia.â A beat of silence before the older fae gave a questioning hum, âYuu's been sick before right?â
ââŚâ Lilia perks up, turning to face Malleus directly as he notices he had opened Yuuâs present, ââŚUmâŚyes, a few times before. Why do you ask?â
ââŚDoesâŚdoes she feel better soon? She isnât sick for long, right?â
ââŚâ Lilia smiles, stepping closer and ruffling the hair in the space between Malleusâs horns with a giggle, âI'm sure she will better quicker than you expect! Your little friend will be right as rain and back in the palace for playdates before you know it!â
Malleus pouts, slapping his guardianâs hands away and trying to smooth his ruffled hair. The woolen tubes in his hands not helping in the slightest as they only made his hair more frizzy, âI donât want her back here! I just donât want to hear about the bothersome thing dying!â He stands, forgoing his other presents but keeping the ugly warmers locked in his grasp unknowingly, âIâm going to bed! Even when she isnât around, she manages to ruin everythingâŚâ
Floating, Lilia flipped himself upside down, pinching at a furious Malleusâs cheek, âAw~! You do like her!â
âNO! I DONâT!â

âHave you guys ever been sued by Coffee-Mate?â
Yoongi looks up when he hears your voice at the counter. He nearly spills the matcha latte in his hand, not expecting to see you, ready to order. Usually, Yoongi sees you come in. Heâs always ready for it, looking up as you enter the room like clockwork. The times that you catch him off guard are few and far between, his senses always alerting him to your presence before you do.Â
Today, though, heâs a little bit busy. With Hoseok out on vacation, itâs just Yoongi and Jungkook manning the shop and Jungkook is better behind the scenes baking than up front taking orders. Itâs left to Yoongi to make all the coffees this morning, and of course, everyone in the world seems to be at Coffee Mates on an early Saturday.
âUh,â he tries to put together a sentence, thoughts pulling together sluggishly at the sight of your pretty smile and vanilla perfume. He swears when he goes home to fall asleep at night, he smells vanilla. âNot that Iâm aware of. Iâd have to ask Jin.â
âHmm, seems like a conflict of interest.âÂ
Yoongiâs mouth quirks a bit as he fastens the top to the matcha in his hand and slides it on the serving counter to Namjoon. The gentry fae nods in thanks at Yoongi and shoots you a raised brow before looking back to Yoongi, a silent question. Yoongi gives the tiniest shake no before turning back to you as Namjoon sighs and retreats.Â
Namjoon has been trying to get Yoongi to ask you out on a date for the better half of a few months. Every day you come to Coffee Mates at the same time, with the same order. You always sit in the same booth, which Yoongi might have put a glamor on to keep it open for you, and you always pop open your book to read for hours, coffee in hand.Â
Yoongi supposes he could ask you out. Youâre friendly enough and you seem to enjoy what few interactions you have. Heâs caught you looking at him at least once or twice, though he worries itâs because his glamor has dropped in your presence or youâre seeing a waver in the magic that hides the nature of most of the shop.Â
Because unlike most patrons at Coffee Mates, you are blissfully unaware of all the magic that surrounds you.Â
At first, Yoongi thought it was a joke. Humans donât just come to this coffee shop without knowing what it is. A bridge between worlds, a little haven for faerie suitors to offer their human counterparts an invitation to Faerie. Or for fae like Namjoon and Jimin, a place to hangout among other creatures of their kind.
Coffee Mates welcomes all fae creatures and their human counterparts, which is why youâre unusual. You have no faerie partner, no knowledge of magic. You donât notice the floating lights in the shop or the pointed ears hidden behind Yoongiâs dark hair. A steaming cup of hot chocolate levitates just a few feet away from where you stand now as Taehyung draws on a napkin, and youâre none the wiser.Â
It makes little sense. But it doesnât have to. The patrons and the workers of the cafe have accepted you all in some unspoken agreement. Watching you curiously, making eyes at Yoongi whenever you laugh particularly hard at something he says.Â
âAlmond latte?â Yoongi asks, already typing in your order on the screen. You hum and nod, handing over cash. Yoongi goes through the motions of putting it in the register, but unknown to you, the money always appears in your wallet once more. Heâs been pretending to accept it for weeks now, unable to bring himself to charge you. âGive me ten.â
âHmm, I think Iâll only give you nine.â
He smiles. âChallenge accepted.âÂ
You leave the counter and sit in your booth. Yoongi watches you from the corner of his eye as he makes your drink, hands memorizing every ingredient and heating it just the way you like it. Normally when Yoongi makes the drinks, he uses magic to help him. He gets much more done that way, but with yours, he always does it by hand. Takes his time to froth the cream for the design on top, always careful when he pours in the cream to make a leaf, or a heart, or something else cute on the top of your coffee.Â
Yoongi likes to personally bring it to your table. Every time that he does, you chide him and insist that you can come to the counter. He doesnât mind, though. It gives him a moment to stretch his legs and escape the heavy hum of machinery and the buzzing energy of magic.Â
Today, youâre leaned against the window, an open book in your hands when he approaches. You sense him and look up, smiling and shaking your head as you snap the book shut. âEight minutes exactly.âÂ
He smirks. âWhen have I ever let you down?â
âYou couldnât possibly, Yoongi. You are singularly gifted in making my day.â
Yoongi gestures to your book to hide the fact that heâs blushing from the tip of his ears to his cheeks. âWhat are you reading today?âÂ
âItâs a romance book about soulmates.â That throws him for a loop. If you notice the way he blinks in surprise, you donât show it. âItâs a really fun read. Do you believe in soulmates?âÂ
He swears half the cafe turns to look at the two of you. Namjoon leans a little out of his booth, tilting his head to eavesdrop. Taehyung has dropped his pen and placed his chin in his hand, watching with a goofy grin on his face.Â
Of course the entire cafe full of sharp-hearing creatures is listening now, interested in your mention of soulmates. Yoongi clears his throat awkwardly, pulling on his apron. âI guess?â
âYou guess?â
âI donât see why not?âÂ
âHmm.â You look him up and down and for a second, he swears you see right through his glamor. See down into the core of him, heartbeat thumping a two-syllable rhythm: soulmate soulmate soulmate. âI hope to find mine one day.â
âI think you will.â
âYeah?â
Yoongi feels his cheeks warm. Chews on his lower lip a little as he nods. âI definitely think you will.âÂ
âThanks, Yoongi.
Everyone watches him return to the counter. He hides from their gazes by busying himself with wiping down one of the machines even though he could flick his fingers and be done with it. He needs the distraction to steady his hands and breathing.Â
Yoongi certainly believes in soulmates. The fact that you believe in soulmates sets him on fire. Ignites something in him that is nervous and excited. Something like hope, softley burning. For faeries, soulmates are quite common. Itâs why Jin made the cafe in the first place, a haven for faeries to help bridge the world between the fae and their sometimes human mates.
When Yoongi looks up at you, rain splattering on the window, crowning your head, he thinks maybe he will take Namjoonâs advice, finally. Maybe he will ask you out on that date heâs been dreaming about. Because if you believe in soulmates, maybe you can believe in magic.
And maybe you can believe that the reason youâve found this little invisible coffee shop is because your soulmate makes you almond lattes every morning.Â
