Only the front of this abandoned hardware store building remains. Located at Levanna, an Ohio River Community. Certainly is close to the highway.

I think it’s really really important to point out that even $15 an hour is still poverty wages in much of the US… yet people are still willing to lose their jobs over that. They are willing to risk everything our ancestors did in the early days of unions.
$15 isn’t enough but people are still willing to fight for it. What does that tell you?
Railroad workers were willing to risk everything to stop an accident like the one in Ohio. Union busters like Biden decided that entire towns weren’t worth the risk to shareholders or the bottom line. What does that tell you?

UP, Sherman Hill December 1966
Less than 2 months old at this point, half of Union Pacific's C630 fleet lifts a train over Sherman Hill in December 1966. The 10 locomotives delivered in October represented the last order UP would ever place with Alco. They remained in service until 1973, at which point they were retired from the roster and sold to DM&IR.

A federal court judge has ruled that parents in Ohio don’t have the right to challenge a trans-inclusive school bathroom policy.
A case brought by parents and students in the Bethel Local School District (BLSD) in November sought to prohibit trans and non-binary students in the region from using toilets and other facilities consistent with their gender identity.
But, in a ruling issued on Monday (7 August), Judge Michael Newman decreed that the accusations brought by the group did not “pass legal muster” to warrant further consideration.
“Not every contentious debate concerning matters of public importance presents a cognisable federal lawsuit,” Newman wrote in his ruling opinion.
During a school board meeting in January 2022, BLSD announced it had implemented policies allowing transgender students to use communal toilets consistent with their gender identity.
Several months later, a group of parents filed a legal challenge, arguing that their parental rights were being infringed upon by not having a public meeting to discuss the matter.
They further argued that a previous policy, which had no protections for trans students, did not violate Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which states that no person in the US shall exclude or discriminate against students on the basis of sex.
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Ohio argued that the plaintiffs lacked standing for the Title IX claim and that citing parental rights did not immediately require the school to adhere to the group’s demands.
Dismissing the case, Newman wrote that parents do not have a “constitutional right” to revoke school policies on toilet usage.
ACLU Ohio deputy legal director, David Carey, said the ruling reaffirmed that the Constitution is not a vehicle to “compel discrimination.”
He explained: “Nothing in the constitutional guarantees of parenting rights, equal protection or free exercise of religion, mandates that transgender students be excluded from gender-appropriate communal restrooms on the basis of their classmates’ beliefs and values.”
“For public schools to function, one student’s or family’s religious beliefs cannot provide a basis to exclude another student from full participation in the school environment.”
In its legal intervention arguments, the ACLU wrote that it believed the public has a “strong interest” in advancing policies that affirmatively protect transgender students and create inclusive school environments.
The LGBTQ & HIV Project staff attorney at the ACLU, Malita Picasso, said the court’s decision made it “resoundingly clear” that the rights of trans students are “not in conflict” with the rights of their peers.
“No student should have to fear discriminatory treatment every morning they walk into school, and this ruling brings us closer to the day no transgender student has to,” she added.

The authorities wouldn't even let this man go back to get his animals during the evacuation, and as a result some died or have serious medical issues. Fuck that shit!
If you want to learn more about the specifics of the horrifying and ongoing environmental disaster in Ohio, go to @ nickdrom on Insta and TikTok!! He's a citizen reporter who, until recently, has been the only person I've seen talking about this in depth. The chemicals are now getting into the Ohio River and previously healthy animals are crashing and dying even though the govt says the air quality is safe. PLEASE keep talking about this!!! The environmental impacts for people and animals have been extremely understated and the damage is nowhere near done.

Text from image: The lie about immigrants eating pets is intended to dehumanize people. The goal is to make black and brown people less than human. Subhuman. As Voltaire said, "Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities." end text.
Back when I taught literature, I taught a few texts that had a heavy focus on cannibalism. The thing about cannibalism is that the way it was depicted in white/eurocentric writing never happened.
There are two forms of cannibalism: survival and ritual. Survival is usually self-explanatory; however, men have been convicted of murder when their defense is survival - so only eat the ones that are already dead. The ritualistic ones were also feasting on people already dead: heroes and family, brave opponents. It was done with reverence and rarely the whole corpse.
The people, who were said to practice arbitrary cannibalism, were the people who were already othered. They were already minorities who had suffered abuses. Foisting the label of cannibal on them was how "civilized" people justified their treatment of these maligned groups. Famously (and once sarcastically), the Irish were accused of cannibalism during their (British imposed) famines. The Native Americans in several places and a different times were accused of it. The native inhabitants of the Congo were accused of it. No one witnessed it. No one talked to the supposed cannibals about it. It was just a neat and tidy shorthand for "uncivilized" "animalistic" and "subhuman" and as such deserving of derision, missionaries, and/or extermination.
No one in their right mind, in this day and age, is going to believe that people in Ohio are routinely eating people. Pets? Absolutely.
