Castletown Café Episode 27: Butterscotch-Cinnamon Pie
It's been 8 years.....doesn't seem like that long, does it? On September 15th, 2015, Undertale launched to the world and took the internet by storm, delighting gamers young and old and capturing their hearts and minds with the story, humor, memorable characters, and beautiful music. Without Undertale, there wouldn't be Deltarune.
It's safe to assume that the pie Kris stole between Chapters 1 and 2 as well as the pie Toriel later teaches Susie how to bake is the same pie from Undertale: butterscotch-cinnamon pie. It's the pie Toriel is known for in Undertale, where she asks you early on in the game which flavor you prefer. It doesn't matter if you choose cinnamon or butterscotch, because she later bakes you one delicious pie with both flavors included that compliment each other perfectly.
This pie is well known by fans to restore your health to full HP, regardless of the route you take (which effects how much max HP you have). It even has plot significance! If you know, you know.
Since Undertale's launch, I've made butterscotch-cinnamon pie every September to commemorate it's anniversary. In previous years, I followed pre-existing recipes, but this year, I have concocted my own! The results are a beautiful custard pie with a perfectly-set filling and it tastes as heavenly as the pies I'd made in the past!
While many butterscotch pie recipes out there include a meringue topping, I always opt for a cinnamon-vanilla whipped topping, inspired by @terribletriocreations butterscotch-cinnamon pie recipe. That said, I'd love to try out my butterscotch-cinnamon pie recipe with a meringue topping one of these days!
There are so many different ways to make butterscotch pie, from the simple to the advanced. You can make it with the browning butter method, or use butterscotch chips, or an easy brown sugar and butter custard filling. Mine is the latter category; great for any beginner and easy to make! Here we go!
BUTTERSCOTCH-CINNAMON PIE:
1 pie crust, pre-made or made from scratch
1 cup firmly-packed dark brown sugar
3 tablespoons flour
3 tablespoons cornstarch
Pinch of salt
2 cups milk
4 egg yolks, divided
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Cinnamon-Vanilla Whipped Topping:
1 cup heavy cream
3 tablespoons powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Roll out pie crust and line a pie dish with it. Make sure the crust fits the dish, trim off any excess dough, and dock the bottom with a fork.
Crimp the edges of the crust around the rim of the pie dish. I do it by pinching the dough with my fingers and thumb, but using a fork or another utensil works, too.
In a small bowl, scramble one egg yolk with a little bit of water and brush the rim to gloss the edges of the pie.
Grab a sheet of foil and place in the pie, then fill with dried beans or pie weights. Bake the crust for about 7-10 minutes. After that, remove it from the oven for a moment.
Remove the beans or pie weights and place a pie shield on the rim of the pie shell to prevent the crust rim from overcooking. If you don't have a pie shield, grab a sheet of foil and place it over the pie, cutting out the center where the filling should go. Instant pie shield! Now, bake your pie crust again for another 5-7 minutes, or until your crust is fully baked. Remove it from the oven yet again. If the crust puffs up at the bottom, squish it back down with a spoon.
In a small mixing bowl, beat 3 egg yolks and set aside.
In a saucepan over medium heat, combine brown sugar, flour, cornstarch, and salt. Whisk together for 30 seconds, then slowly add the milk while continuing to whisk in order to prevent any clumps or lumps from forming.
Cook the mixture, stirring constantly to prevent burning, until it's nice and thick and is bubbling a wee bit.
Stir in the butter and keep cooking as the butter melts. After that, keep stirring and cooking for a few more minutes, then remove from heat.
With a ladle, slowly incorporate (while whisking) 1 cup of the hot butterscotch mixture into the egg yolks to temper the eggs and prevent scrambling from occurring. Once you've added and mixed it together, feel free to add just a little more butterscotch, slowly, to ensure that the eggs gradually got hot enough. Then simply pour your egg mixture back into the saucepan with the remaining butterscotch.
Return your butterscotch to medium heat and cook again for another 3 minutes or so, then stir in the vanilla and cinnamon until fully incorporated.
Pour that butterscotch filling into your prepared pie shell and bake once again for another 7-10 minutes. Remove your pie from the oven and let it cool completely. Once cooled, your custard should be completely set and ready for the whipped topping!
In another mixing bowl, combine heavy cream, powdered sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon and beat on medium speed until stiff peaks form. Attach your decorating tip of choice to a piping bag and place it in a tall glass to fill it with the whipped cream. As you would with decorating a cake, pipe the whipped topping over your pie in any pattern or design you'd like. If you want, you can sprinkle the top with a little extra ground cinnamon for a finishing touch. Enjoy and stay determined! ❤

“Where is the Justice?”
Chapter 4: It’s Raining Somewhere Else
Summary: “It’s been about a month since Sebastian’s execution date passed. You are now 30 weeks pregnant. You’re barely staying afloat. At least you’re not alone.”
Notes: This time the chapter title is Undertale inspired :) I like referencing other things I like with my chapter titles muhaha. I hope it’s okay that these chapters tend to be kinda short ^^; bright side is it means I can get them out faster
~ ⚖️ ~
November 30th, 2013
An impenetrable sheet of gray coats the earth like a thick blanket, as the sky cries in your place.
You’ve cried a lot these past weeks. So much, in fact, that you fear you have no tears left to give.
You were tired of crying, anyway. You’re tired of everything these days.
You’re so tired.
“It’s about time we had lunch.”
You hear your mother-in-law speak, but you don’t turn to face her. You’re busy watching the rain pelt the window in front of you, analyzing how the droplets race each other to the bottom end of the glass. You used to love days like this. He used to love days like this.
“I’m thinking of trying that chili recipe Rita sent me. How does that sound?”
“Sounds fine,” you mutter.
“Okay…” She watches you for a moment. Your eyes glued to the window, slowly rocking in the rocking chair you were in with a hand resting on your growing stomach. She sighs. “I’ll be in the kitchen if you need me.”
“Thank you, Valentina.”
You moved in with Sebastian’s mother shortly after he was found guilty. You couldn’t afford the apartment by yourself, and with your husband gone… you needed someone to help you get around. Valentina was more than happy to take you in. She told you that you could stay as long as you needed or wanted. You really couldn’t express enough how grateful you are to her. And Gavin, too. Sebastian’s little brother. He’s been helping as well. Them and your sister-in-law, Rita, all agreed to help you raise the twins when they come.
You try your best to stay on your feet. It’s hard, though, when all you can think about is him. You had to tell him through a plexiglass window that you were carrying twins. He looked shocked, excited… and sad all at once. You so badly wanted to touch him. You wanted him to hold you, and celebrate with you. But neither of you could afford his bail. It hurt your chest. It still does. A lot of things do.
You never had the chance to pick out any names with him, either. Your visits always felt too short for that, and you couldn’t be bothered to think of names on your while the father of your children was locked away for something he didn’t do.
You have names now, though. You decided you wanted to know their genders before they came, so you have two names ready to go – one for a boy, and one for a girl.
You want to name your son Vallen, after Valentina. You swear that woman is a saint. You keep thinking to yourself that you owe her your life – she may very well have saved it. She keeps you going, making sure you take care of yourself and get to all your doctor appointments.
For your daughter, you want to name her Moira. Truth be told, you always thought that name sounded so beautiful. You adored its meaning, too. “Of the sea.” A pretty name with a pretty meaning. You’ve always loved the sea.
You like to think Sebastian would approve of your choices.
You’re pulled out of your daze when Gavin barges out of his bedroom and into the living room.
“Mamaaaa, I’m hungry! Are you making something?” He shouts to assure his voice will reach her wherever she is in the house.
“Yes, mijo, I just started cooking!” Valentina shouts back from the kitchen.
“Oh, cool.”
You had finally managed to pull your gaze away from the window to look at Gavin.
“Hey,” he comes to stand next to you. “Whatcha doing?”
You turn back to the rain. “Nothing, really.”
“Mm,” he hums, now watching the downpour with you.
You both sit in the calm stillness, enjoying the soothing sounds from outside. You could almost smell the petrichor in the air.
“... I was scrolling through old pictures on my phone earlier,” Gavin starts. “Found one from my 16th birthday.”
You give a soft hum.
He continues, “It was that one that Rita took right after Sebastian smashed my face down into my cake.”
A small smile tugs at your lips. You can’t help but chuckle, faint as it was. You immediately remember that day like it was yesterday.
“I looked so pissed, and you guys were just laughing your asses off,” he snickers. “Man, I hated him for that.”
“You did get back at him for it, though,” you add, recalling when Gavin grabbed a fistful of cake and slapped Sebastian with it.
“Tch, yeah!” He shoves his hands into the pockets of his jeans. “Mama was piiissed. We got cake everywhere.”
The small smile you bare grows ever so slightly. You run the memory through your head, staring forward through the glass as if the scene was playing before you. Cake being thrown everywhere, a glob of frosting landing on your shirt, Sebastian putting Gavin in a headlock while Valentina shouted and Rita was almost on the floor laughing. It was certainly a fun day, to say the least.
“I miss him.”
Your smile falters slightly.
“I miss him everyday,” Gavin admitted, a thick sadness to his voice.
“I miss him, too,” you whisper, leading you both into a long, still quiet.
Everything hurts again. But at least you’re not alone this time. You discovered recently that it feels better to hurt with someone, rather than all on your own. It was… comforting, in a way. Still hurts, though.
You hear Gavin sigh behind you, barely feeling him place his hand on the back of the rocking chair. He leans down to get a little closer to your level.
“I hope you know your kids are getting the same treatment I got when they get older,” he warns, a mischievous smirk shown in his reflection on the window pane.
You can’t help but smile again. “Don’t come crying to me when they gang up on you and kick your ass. I won’t stop them.”
Gavin laughs.
He looks so much like Sebastian when he laughs. Got his sense of humor from him, too, clearly. Dick.
It stings a bit when little things like that remind you of him. You always see pieces of Sebastian in Gavin, Rita, and Valentina. You’re certain you will in your own children, as well, when they arrive.
It hurts. But at the same time, it’s something you desperately hold onto for comfort. It’s a way you can hold on to Sebastian.
You did promise him you would never let go, after all.
And you have no intention of breaking that promise.
Even now that he’s gone.

I just remembered that "Human Candy" turns 5 today. And I don't have a drawing to celebrate this, oops. Erh, let me give you a fun fact, instead:
A printed "adult themed" Undertale fancomic (or doujinshi) from Japan inspired me to start "Human Candy". This doujinshi is about Sans who drinks something made by Alphys (based on a recipe by Gaster) which accidentally turns Sans into a human. The rest of the "plot" is filled with the tiniest censor bars imaginable.
Erh, yeah...
Anyways, happy birthday, "Human Candy"!

What're some Brett HCs? :3
i'm the brett-meiser i see... like the snow meiser for brett hand
HEEHEEHOO <3 tw for food mentions??
- Brett can bake! when he moved off of his family's property in college, he had to learn to cook for himself (and his roomates) in a little rinky dink apartment off campus, and during that time, he learned how to make the most MOUTH WATERING chocolate chip cookies.
his secret? he paints melted butter onto them as soon as they're out of the oven. the cookies taste like heaven, and they always bring tears to anyone's eyes the first time they take a bite.
...he can also make a damn good lasagna. old recipe from the butlers and maids that raised him in the old hand manor.
- HE LOVESSS RPGs. especially ones where you can befriend the characters??? augh. lovely. perfect. his favorite in particular is the classic MOON RPG (y'know the one that toby fox got inspiration from when working on undertale? speaking of,)
he's also played the utdr games. he ABSOLUTELY cried at the true pacifist ending (i have a headcanon for andre that ties into this actually! he played ut bc of the sans memes back in 2016, then reccomended it to brett a couple years later.)
he's played deltarune OF COURSE. and his favorite characters were sweet cap'n cakes :-] (scc ties into my next thing heehee)
- H☆R fan!!! while he is- and always will be- a fan of almost exclusively 1980's media, he found joy in the homestar series back when it was in its early stages. his favorite character is strong bad! (and he really enjoyed scc in dr bc when they introduced themselves in game he was like "wow! just like homestar!" lol)
- OVERBITE!!! he has an overbite. he had to get braces to fix it in middle school, but it never fully went away.
- y'all've most likely heard his voice. he's got a bit of a southern twang to him (just like me a bit :3), and his parents made him go to speech therapy to get rid of it when it was a REALLY strong accent. but nothin' can keep a country boy down, amiright folks!?
...right?
...tough crowd.
- GREATEST PERSON TO HUG EVERRRR. he's got a lot of lovin' in his heart and a lot of it is expressed through physical affection and words of affirmation, both things he excels at! brett can give the most comfortable hugs in the galaxy, from a quick squeeze around the shoulders to a literal pick me up!...and spin around. and nuzzling cheek... hehe. (he actually made reagan fall asleep in the middle of one of them, so he kinda just carried her to her lab to snooze <3.)
- uses fidgets quite frequently, especially those rings that you twist <3 he's got a glittery one that he wears on his right ring finger and it works well for him. he uses chewlery as well and both of these things help him focus quite better than without.
- hmmmm hmmm... he loves to hum. humming is good. nice noise. he's got a groovy tune in his head at all times and he ain't afraid to show it! well- hum it, in this case.
- i like to think that if you messed up his hair all the way, he'd have kind of longer hair. that's how he had his mullet in the brettfast club episode...!
- mr bisexual... probably bi ace or bi aro. either way he swings! (personally i think he's arospec AND aspec. maybe demiro and demisexual (TOTALLY not making all my faves aro/arospec WHATTT. nooo.))
- unlike what'd you expect, he actually doesn't like milk chocolate! he prefers dark chocolate. richer taste, y'know (smthn smthn uhhh run and tell that from hairspray)
- HE CAN SEWWWW HE CAN SEW HE CAN SEW HE CAN SEW HE C-
brett can sew!!!! he repairs his and his friends' clothes a lot AND makes stuff too (cough cough. hand puppets and such)
- can also do makeup SO WELL. his goth phase really had some results... the guy knows how to do eyeliner. it's basically second nature for him.
- STIMS!!!! HE STIMS!!!! HE STIMS BY BOUNCING HIS LEG AND VOCALLY STIMSSSS. I KNOW THIS FOR A FACT.
- sleeps with a teddy bear. the guy likes cuddling. probably has on o' those those special ones that you can easily heat up in the microwave or dryer!!
- paints his nails on the occasion :)
that's!!!! mostly it!!!!
OH AND @niceysboy since i screenshotted your ask!

Ah…thank you….I’m glad you’ve enjoyed my content, as I’ve enjoyed yours for a long time! You’ve inspired me! I’ll miss you, but I’m so glad you’ve been a part of the Undertale fandom on Tumblr for so long. Cooking sides of fandoms are very underrated, in my opinion. Thank you for all of the wonderful recipes you’ve shared over the years. It means a lot to me to be given a shout-out like this…to be seen by you, and that you want to try some of the things I’ve made!
I’m no professional cook, and many of my recipes are built off of existing ones (and some, like the Ralsei tea, need to be remade)….but wow…thank you!
To be honest, your blog inspired mine. If I’ve inspired you now, I think I’ve come full circle. I wish you the best of luck out there! I know I already wrote one heartfelt message in the replies but….seriously…I gotta write another in a reblog.
I, myself, will continue doing my best to make tasty treats here on this blog and sharing those recipes! ❤️ You have left a mighty legacy, @undertale-cooking !!
*blows dust off the blog*
Hi, folks. It’s been … a while. The past several years have seen me falling on some pretty rough times (COVID, money issues, issues with my living situation, other health stuff to deal with, etc etc). Thus my absense.
The good news is, things are starting to stabalize a lot more for me, finally! However, in the meantime, there has been another blog that has taken on the task of making excellent recipes for Deltarune foods and drinks. The blog is @castletown-cafe
As such, it seems as though it would be rather difficult to compete with such a talented blog. 😅 There are a couple of Deltarune recipes that people have submitted here, so I will definitely be testing, photographing (if needed) & publishing those because they deserve to see the light of day! And I am sure everyone will very much appreciate these submissions. But after that, well, it may be time for me to hang up the tea towel on this project, as it were.
I’ve enjoyed this project so much over the years and it’s been so exciting to test out the creative recipes you’ve all come up with, as well as devise some of my own. It’s also an absolute joy to have been a part of such a fun, welcoming community. And I am super excited to personally start trying out some of the gorgeous recipes from @castletown-cafe because they look amazing! I strongly encourage everyone else to check them out too, and I’ll be reblogging them over time.
So stay tuned for the final few recipes that this blog will publish (Revive Mint Tea, Butler Juice & Butler Tea, and Hot Chocolate). I will also continue to reblog any fun recipes I can find related to the Undertale & Deltarune universe.

Castletown Café Episode 20: Spider Donut
Ahuhuhu...I seem to have lost track of time. Has it really been three weeks!? Oops. But I didn’t want to wait a whole year to post these, even though I did learn quite a lot while making them. I’ll have to remake these next October so the glaze is more purple than black!
It was only a matter of time before Undertale recipes made their way into this Deltarune-inspired cooking blog, given they share the same creator and are alternate universes or timelines of each other. Here in the Castletown Café, we’re very familiar with Muffet’s Spider Donuts: made by spiders, for spiders...of spiders. Indeed, Muffet is a known cannibal, not only eating small regular spiders but also shown to try to eat other monsters (and one human) by turning them into baked goods. Whether or not she has successfully done that, we don’t know...
There are no spiders or monsters in these donuts; just flour, eggs, sugar, the usual ingredients for baked cake donuts. The description of Spider Donuts state that they’re made with fresh Spider Cider in the batter, so we’re using the next best thing: apple cider!
Many apple cider donut recipes call for reducing the apple cider by heating it over the stove and letting it simmer down to just a smaller amount, usually half a cup. This is done to reduce the amount of liquid that goes into the batter as well as to pack the donuts full of that apple cider flavor!
The recipe I followed from Sally’s Baking Addiction included apple pie spice - something I don’t have - so I made my own by combining cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, allspice, and ginger. The exact measurements of each will be listed in the recipe.
I created my own recipe for blueberry glaze by cooking frozen blueberries, blending that into puree, and then adding powdered sugar and a little melted butter. If there is anything I’ve learned from creating my own glaze recipe, it is to SIFT YOUR POWDERED SUGAR FIRST! Otherwise you’ll have lumps in your glaze that heating it up won’t fix! I’d sift it at least twice to get most of the lumps out before adding it to the blueberry puree.
Unfortunately, this glaze was too dark - so although blueberry puree sounded like a good idea (and maybe if it was fresh instead of frozen or less puree was used, maybe the colors would have been brighter), maybe it should be something else, like blackberry - or just basic vanilla glaze with food coloring added. I need to experiment first.
The webs are super easy: just melt white chocolate chips, fill a piping bag, and pipe on your white chocolate spider webs! You can use the microwave or a double boiler, but be careful if you choose the microwave because you can burn it easily that way. You can make your own “makeshift double boiler” by filling a saucepan with water and placing the lid of the right size upside down over the water so you can pour the white chocolate into it and use that as a shallow dish.
Liiike this!
As you can see, it needs to be a metal saucepan with a matching metal lid, not glass, and no hole(s) in it for steam to escape. Idk if they still make lidded saucepans with metal, holeless lids, come to think of it...since I use several that are part of a set made in the 70′s!
SPIDER DONUTS:
2 cups (or 250g) all-purpose flour
3/4 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1 and 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp allspice
1/8 tsp ground ginger
1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
Sprinkle of ground clove
1/4 tsp salt
1 and 1/2 cups (or 360ml) apple cider - reduced down to 1/2 cup (or 120 ml)
1 large room temperature egg
1/2 cup (or 120 ml) room temperature milk
2 tablespoons (or 30g, or 1/4 stick) melted unsalted butter
1/2 cup (or 100 g) packed brown sugar, light or dark works fine (I used dark)
1/2 (or 100g) cup granulated sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
Glaze:
2 or 3 tablespoons blueberry puree
1 cup (or 200g?) powdered sugar
2 tablespoons (or 30 g, or 1/4 stick) melted unsalted butter
Topping:
About 1 cup (or 200 g?) white chocolate chips, melted
Heat your apple cider in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Have it simmer for up to 10 minutes or more, stirring occasionally. Keep checking every 5 minutes afterward to make sure it’s evaporating. You’re likely to still have a bit more than 1/2 cup after 20-30 minutes, that’s okay. Pour the reduced cider into a 1/2 cup measuring cup, and feel free to drink whatever’s left.
While the reduced cider cools, preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (or 177 degrees C) and grease your donut pans (you’ll need at least two 6-cavity donut pans).
Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and spices together and set aside.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the melted butter, egg, brown and granulated sugars, vanilla, and milk. Pour into the dry ingredients and stir together while slowly pouring in the cooled apple cider reduction. Stir until fully combined and no streaks of dry flour remain. Your batter will be slightly thick. Do not overmix, it affects the texture.
Spoon or pour the batter into the donut cavities. I just scooped it in, but you can try using a piping bag, which is recommended in most cake donut recipes!
Bake for 10-12 minutes or until fully risen and not shiny. The tops should be a nice golden brown, and a toothpick inserted in should come out clean. Also, if it springs back when you poke it, that’s another sign they’re done. Use whatever testing method works best for you.
While you wait for the donuts to cool, get the ingredients ready for the glaze! Combine 1 cup (200 g?) of frozen blueberries in a saucepan with 2 to 3 tablespoons of water. Cook over medium-high heat and let the berries bubble for a few minutes. Once fully cooked and a nice hot berry sauce has formed, remove from heat.
Have it cool a little before pouring it into a blender or food processor. With the puree setting, blend until smooth. Measure out 2 or 3 tablespoons of blueberry puree and add to a bowl.
Sift your powdered sugar a couple of times before adding it to your blueberry puree. Melt 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter and add it to your glaze mixture, stirring until your glaze forms.
Dunk cooled donuts halfway into the glaze to frost the tops. Let dry while you melt your white chocolate.
Over medium heat, heat water in a saucepan and place a fitting holeless metal lid upside down over the water - or just use a double boiler if you have one.
Pour the white chocolate chips into your saucepan lid/double boiler and let melt, stirring occasionally. Keep an eye on your chocolate so that it doesn’t burn.
Once your chocolate is fully melted, scoop into a piping bag fitted with a small round tip (you can fill your piping bag by placing it tip side down in a glass so it stands upright, keeping it open by curling the ends around the rim of your glass). Pipe white chocolate spider webs onto your donuts, working quickly before the white chocolate hardens back up again.
Ta-da! You now have delicious apple cider donuts with blueberry glaze and white chocolate spider webs! A multitude of flavors all wrapped up in one Spider Donut - hold the spiders.

Cinnamon Butterscotch Pie
(inspired by the Requiem Cafe Undertale event picture and description, as seen below)
For the crust, buy a premade one (I got the Marie Callender’s deep dish pastry shells) and let thaw for 10 minutes, poke the crust with a fork to prevent air bubbles, then bake at 400 degrees F for 8-10 minutes (until slightly golden but not fully baked).
Let the crust cool while you make the filling.
The filling is inspired by the House of Nash Eats Indiana Sugar Cream Pie recipe (with mods to make it fit the Cinnamon Butterscotch flavor profile).
You will need:
-4 tablespoons salted butter, browned (I used a full stick, then measured out after browning with a tablespoon)
-1 cup light brown sugar (not packed down)
-4 tbsp cornstarch
-3 tbsp butterscotch sauce (you can make your own, but I’m trying to make this as easy as possible for people to follow. I bought the Graeter’s brand Butterscotch dessert sauce)
-1 tsp ground cinnamon
-2 cups heavy cream (aka one pint and the rest of the 2 cups measure filled with half and half or water)
-1 teaspoon (or as much as you eyeball pour) vanilla
Directions:
First, brown your butter on the stove over medium high heat. Keep an eye on it because it can burn very quickly!
Use a light tinted saucepan or a silver one to make the process easier—You’ll know it’s done when it’s a toasty golden brown color like a perfectly roasted marshmallow!
Remove the butter to cool while you finish the filling.
Place the brown sugar, cornstarch, and butterscotch sauce into a saucepan and combine with a whisk (I use a silicone one, as to not damage coated pans).
Add in your heavy cream and cinnamon, then cook over medium heat until the mixture boils, stirring frequently. Continue cooking for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly while the filling thickens.
Remove from heat after and stir in vanilla and browned butter, whisking until the mixture is homogeneous (all the same consistency).
Pour the filling into the pie crust and bake at 325 degrees F for 15 minutes. Check pie, turn if getting too browned on one side, then bake for another 10 minutes.
Remove from oven and let cool to room temperature before placing in fridge to cool (at least 4 hours, but can be overnight!)
For a lighter texture, serve around 3-4 hours of chilling, and for a denser, fully solid texture, serve after chilling overnight.
Serve cold with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon on top! Enjoy <3
^^ partially cooled texture vs fully cooled texture

A Super Paper Mario-Themed Cookbook!
Hi, everyone! This is a call for all the video game fans and foodies alike: do you like Super Paper Mario and do you like to cook? Well, have I got an idea for you --- an online cookbook providing real-life recipes for SPM’s food items!
The name’s PancakePie. I’m a big fan of the game, Super Paper Mario, and food (and video game food items!), and I’ve decided to combine those interests into creating a cookbook based on the game, inspired by the blog, @undertale-cooking
As they have done, I’d love to perhaps compile the recipes into a digital cookbook one day. But for now, I’m really excited to connect with others over a game I really love, especially related to food.
Interested? Take a look at my blog’s Submit page for more info! My Judging/Editing page also discusses my evaluation and editing process in more detail. My Ask box is also open, so feel free to send me any questions or comments about the cookbook or even just to say hello! 😊
I look forward to seeing what you guys come up with!

Like many others, Undertale has inspired me to create a lot, but the best thing it ever inspired me to make? Butterscotch cinnamon pie. Anyone else tried it? What recipe did you use? I used this one, which was "adapted" from @lvl1-chef.
It is soooo good, but its one downside is that it calls for a shit ton of eggs, and only the yolks. Seriously. Nine(!!) yolks for the filling and one for the crust. I end up with a mason jar full of egg whites that I usually forget to use. If you have a favorite butts pie recipe/tutoriel, let me know!
#undertale#recipe#toriel#baking#not necessarily looking for one that's egg free. just one that uses fewer eggs

SAGE 2020: Fan Games
I’d hoped to have this article out a little bit sooner, but I overestimated how long it would take to write about some of these games. Whoops! Like I said when I outlined the posting “schedule” on the first day, we’re playing it fast and loose, so this is just what you get.
Today is the day I talk about fan games! And even though SAGE has “Sonic” right there in the acronym, it’s always hosted fan games from all types, so today we’ve got Mega Man, Mario, Rayman, and even fan games of fan games, if you can believe it.
Sonic Pinball Panic!
Pinball is one of those things where I’ve always been obsessed with it, but never very good at it. And now, with access to digital pinball collections like Pinball Arcade and Pinball FX, I don’t actually find myself playing as much pinball as I thought I would when I was 14 years old. Still, I find myself fascinated by a good pinball table, and this honestly caught me off guard. This could very easily be an official DLC release for one of those aforementioned pinball collections and I wouldn’t even bat an eyelash (in fact, if you ask me, this is better than Pinball FX, which has always had weird ball physics). This looks, sounds, and functions exactly like a real pinball table should. My complaints are minor: for starters, the table feels kind of easy. I’ve never been a pinball wizard, but I was losing balls left and right here and it still took a good 15 minutes before I finally got a game over. Score accumulation is also pretty slow; most pinball tables will dump millions and millions of points on you, but here, it felt like a struggle just to reach the 379k I finished with. Both contribute to the fact that the table feels a little flat, like it’s missing a spark to really put it over the top. And, third, it would be nice if it had controller support. The keyboard works just fine, here (it’s just pinball, after all) but I find that the triggers on a controller feel really good with pinball flippers, and mapping the plunger to the right stick is great, too. This is a Unity game, so I wouldn’t think it’d be that hard to hook it up to the controller mapper. Still, I came away impressed.
Mega Man: Perfect Blue
There are two things out there that always give me pause: fan-made Doom level packs, and Mega Man fan games. Fan made gaming content generally has problems when it comes to difficulty balancing anyway, but these games have earned a certain reputation for their difficulty, which creates a problem when you have content made by fans, for fans. This insularity means these things are usually way too hard for what I would consider “normal” people (read: casual fans and outsiders). Add on to the fact that I’d even say that there are official Mega Man games with bad difficulty balancing, and you have a recipe for frustration. Sadly, this is how I’d characterize Perfect Blue: though this introductory level isn’t impossibly hard, it’s definitely pushing that edge where it’s not very accommodating to someone who hasn’t played and finished every Classic Mega Man game ever made. It almost immediately throws you into scenarios where you have jumps you can barely reach, insta-kill spikes, and enemies that not only actively dodge your shots, but invincible enemies that launch counter attack homing missiles. And then it starts making you juggle all of this stuff, together, at the same time. None of this is insurmountable as long as you’re paying attention, but as a very casual Mega Man fan, it’s an unfriendly first impression and makes me worried about what the rest of the game is going to be like as the challenge naturally ramps up. For those hardcore Mega Man fans among you, the rest of this is solid, at least. The presentation and controls are excellent, and the new sprites are beautiful. It’s a game I’d love to enjoy when it’s done… but I’m assuming I’ll be left out in the cold. A shame, really, because there’s so much promise here.
Sonic and the Mayhem Master
There’s a lot to like about this game, but there’s a part of me that really wonders if this should even be considered a Sonic fan game. Mayhem Master’s depictions of Sonic and Amy Rose are atypical to put it mildly. Here, Sonic seems to be a bookish nerd of sorts, a sidekick to Amy Rose, who has been turned into a burnt out, cigar-smoking detective. Most of the game plays out as half an adventure game, half an RPG, where you roam around the world talking to NPCs and gather clues while being assaulted by random battles. The battle system is super off-the-wall, too, perhaps taking inspirations from games like Mario & Luigi and Undertale. This means that battles aren’t passive -- you spend most of each fight dodging or nullifying incoming attacks with simplistic action-based commands. It’s weird, and different, and occasionally even a little bit overwhelming. That’s kind of the whole game, really. It’s the sort of thing that really doesn’t feel like a Sonic game at all, but it also doesn’t feel bad. The artwork is very charming, I’m interested in seeing the characters develop, and there’s plenty of worldbuilding and mystery. Would this still be as intriguing if you removed the Sonic connection, even if it’s so threadbare? That’s a hard question to answer. I know that some of my interest in this game is seeing how it spins more familiar Sonic elements into something that’s completely different. Worth checking out, for curiosity’s sake if nothing else.
Sonic and the Dreamcatcher
This is a fairly brilliant little game with two unfortunate quirks. If you didn’t know, the special stages in the original Sonic the Hedgehog were inspired by an arcade game of the era called Cameltry, published by Taito in 1989. Now, Sonic’s special stages were different enough from Cameltry that it wasn’t a case of Sega outright stealing the gameplay, but there’s a clear lineage there, and it only becomes clearer when you compare the special stages in Sonic 4 Episode 1 to Cameltry (spoilers: in that game, they’re nearly identical). Dreamcatcher is also from this lineage, but is infinitely more charming than either Sonic 4 and maybe even Cameltry itself. The idea is that you must collect a specific number of blue spheres in order to reveal the Chaos Emerald, after which you have a limited amount of time to find and collect it. It’s very simple, but the presentation really sells the game’s charm. It’s just a game that looks good and sounds good, with an interesting premise executed very well. Also, you get a dedicated “& Knuckles” button to spawn infinite Knuckles to help you collect blue spheres and bash enemies. Being able to have unlimited numbers of these guys sounds like it would break the game, but once that countdown clock begins, the last thing you need is 20+ echidnas clogging up the route back to the emerald. The first quirk this game suffers from is that there’s only two levels. Parts of this have a very “game jam made in a weekend” vibe to it despite the rock-solid music, sound, and gameplay, and only having two levels contributes to that. Hopefully more are coming in the future. The other quirk? You can’t actually download this game -- it’s embedded in a webpage. I’m sure this is to make it easy to play on any platform with a web browser (phones, PCs, etc.) but I find myself greatly desiring a hard copy of this game that can live on my computer forever.
Sonic Galactic
Now here’s just a good old fashioned Sonic fan game. Though it clearly takes inspiration from Sonic Mania’s aesthetics in some places, it’s clearly doing its own thing, featuring not just the core cast of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, but also Fang the Sniper, and even a brand new character named Tunnel the Mole. Unlike a lot of Sonic fan games at SAGE, this appears to be using something besides Clickteam Fusion, Game Maker, or Unity. Here, it’s the “Hatch Game Engine,” whatever that is. Whatever the case may be, the game runs very well and is basically indistinguishable from just playing Sonic Mania. Visuals are sharp, music’s good, the two included boss fights are surprisingly fun to fight -- everything seems to be in order. As a result, there’s not really a lot to say. This is just a good, fun game. Anything else I’d say would come off sounding like nitpicks. For example, there’s no way to set graphics options yet, so the game is stuck in 2x Windowed mode. Fang and Tunnel are cute additions, but I wonder how much utility they have as characters. Unless I missed something, Fang’s pop gun is mainly for a weak double-jump ability, and Tunnel’s ability to dig and ricochet off floors, walls and ceilings is cool, but it doesn’t have quite the universal utility of Tails’ flight or Knuckles climbing and gliding. It’ll be interesting to see how or maybe even if their abilities have a chance to grow into something special. Anyway, like I said, those are nitpicks, so try to give this a shot if you can.
Sonic Robo-Blast!
Remasters seem to be a bit of a theme this SAGE, between Sonic Triple Trouble 16-bit, Sonic 2 SMS, Sonic 1 Revisited, but this is perhaps the most surprising of them all: a loving remaster of the original Sonic Robo-Blast. SRB1 was perhaps one of the first true “landmark” fan games, given that it was basically a whole entire game that people could play. It's not a stretch to say that SRB1 probably helped kickstart the fan gaming community that still survives to this day -- I certainly owe my involvement in the community to seeing SRB1 for the first time. The problem is, as historically significant as the game might be, it’s nearly impossible to go back to nowadays -- it’s much, much too dated to be any fun. This remaster completely re-envisions SRB1 as a regular Sonic game, while also pulling in gameplay elements from Sonic Robo-Blast 2. It’s a bit of a time paradox mindwarp, but it helps give it a bit more personality than just making a bog-standard 2D Sonic. It works, aided by the fact the sprites, music and overall presentation are fantastic. The only downside is the Act 2 boss, which commits the cardinal sin of taking away player agency and making you wait around far too much. Here’s hoping this gets finished, because it’s definitely on my radar now.
Super Mario Flashback
This has been floating around for a few years now and I’m glad to see it’s finally starting to get some more substantial content as it moves towards becoming an actual game. That being said, this is also one of those games that’s kind of hard to talk about because it’s just… really polished. The art is incredible, it controls exactly like a Mario game, and there’s already a decent mixture of ideas at play in the demo. Anything else I’d say would sound like nitpicking -- like, for example, the backseat game designer in me wonders if maybe the game is prioritizing aesthetics a little too much. This is a wonderfully animated game, absolutely gorgeous, but some actions, like the butt-stomp and the wall kick, feel a bit sluggish, and I think it’s because they show off fancy animations. Even if it’s a split second, waiting for Mario to attach to a wall to kick off of it feels slow. Really, though, that’s an insignificant complaint. This demo is still well worth checking out.
Sonic Advance 4 Advanced
This game seems like a greatest-hits of Dimps best ideas, spanning the first Sonic Advance all the way to Sonic Rush. There’s just one problem: the game seems broken. Now, my desktop PC is starting to show its age. I built it four and a half years ago, and though it can handle game like Gears of War 5 on high settings at 60fps, slowly, newer games seem to be leaving it behind. That being said, I don’t think a game like Sonic Advance 4 here should be running at what appears to be half its intended speed. It also originally launched in a teeny-tiny window (we’re talking, like, smaller than a postage stamp) and even though the options menu has a toggle for full screen mode, it doesn’t want to work. Something about this game under the hood seems to be struggling very, very, VERY hard. It’s a shame, because if this actually played at the proper speed, it seems like it might actually be an alright game, if a bit complex and busy.
Sonic 2 SMS Remake
Here’s a game I was all buckled in expecting to enjoy. Like it says on the tin, this is a remake of Sonic 2 for the Master System (and Game Gear), but with wide screen visuals and huge expansions to the mechanics, roster of playable characters, and levels. On the outside it seems really impressive, and to a certain degree it is, but something about the controls feel a little off. Sonic’s heavier here than he is on the Master System, perhaps to simulate “real” Sonic physics a little more accurately, but you can also pretty much stop on a dime, and the combination of the two feels awkward. The camera also needs a lot of work, as it’s basic at best and does a poor job of letting you see what’s below (to the dev if you’re reading this: there’s actually video tutorials out there on how 2D scrolling cameras work, it might be worth looking a couple of them up). It also leans into some of the tech limitations of the Master System, like how you aren’t given any rings for boss fights (and even hiding the HUD, a move done to save on resources for the large enemy sprites). I could be picky on a bunch of other little stuff, too, like how the flight mechanics feel, but there are other games to play at SAGE and I’ve got at least two more articles to write. Needless to say, this is a solid (impressive, even) foundation but it’s missing a lot of late-stage polish to clean up the tiny little rough edges.
Rayman Redemption
I tell this story every so often, but it was about three quarters of the way through Rayman 2 on the Sega Dreamcast when it struck me, suddenly: I love this game. I was being chased by a pirate ship through some rickety bridges and even though I was dying over and over and over again, I realized I had been enjoying Rayman 2 enough that I might put it in my top ten Dreamcast games. But that was 2002, and the years haven’t been so kind to ol’ Rayman. From the strangely celebrity-infused Rayman 3, to the tragedy of Rayman 4 (eventually becoming Raving Rabbids) to the endless, careless ports of Rayman 2 to every platform under the sun, one gets the impression Ubisoft maybe didn’t know what to do with Rayman. Especially now, when most of Ubisoft’s games are some form of online live service or cookie cutter open world experience (or increasingly both). But the fans know what they want. Rayman Redemption takes the original 1995 Rayman game and lovingly gives it a fresh coat of paint. The results are akin to what Taxman and Stealth did for Sonic CD in 2011, with wide screen visuals, improved controls, touched up level design, but gameplay that still feels faithful and accurate to the original experience. Except that Sega charged money for that, and here, fans have released this for free. Ubisoft’s loss, I guess. I didn’t play Rayman 1 until well after I’d finished Rayman 2, and I’ll admit, I kind of bounced off of it back then. It felt slow, and awkward, and when the difficulty ramped up, it got very hard, very quickly. Now, admittedly, I’ve only put about 30 minutes into Redemption here, but just the addition of a run button is incredibly welcome, and the retooled level design and powerup mechanics helps the game feel way less obtuse overall. It’s just a cleaner, tighter, more accessible and more polished version of Rayman.
Stay tuned for the next article: Indie games.
