A quick question for people who read fanfics for US films/tv shows
Does it bother you when a fanfic writer doesn't use US spellings? Because as someone from the UK it is much easier for me to write with British spellings. I'm already concentrating on trying to use the right terminology that I think worrying about using US spelling would just not make writing fun.
And I'm not talking about authors using the wrong terminology or cultural traditions or slang because i can understand being a bit put off by that, I'm talking about them using "colour" instead of "color" or "realise" instead of "realize" for example
(The only exception for this is that I will use "mom" instead of "mum")

I keep seeing people from like. the South of the US making fun of British summer and saying we're weak and don't know real heat. and I keep defending brits bc like there is no AC, buildings are built to amplify and insulate heat, and its an island so its humid as hell. its truly miserable. but I'm starting to want to visit somewhere hot in the US during summer so I can get an actual comparison, bc what the hell it can't be That much worse

I would also like to add: American biscuits tend not to have quite the same crumb structure that British scones have.

The fact that we just don't do Thanksgiving is something too many Brit seem to sleep on in the US vs UK debate
"At least we don't have mass shootings" - Played out, tasteless
"At least we don't have to pay for healthcare" - Yeah but is this even true anymore? Thanks for nothing, Tories
"At least we don't have Thanksgiving" - Impenetrable, devastating, leaves absolutely no room for a Yank to clap back

Reblog after voting, please 🙏

now i’m thinking about reader setting off the over-sensitive smoke detector at their new place and having to explain to the handsome crew of firefighters that responded to the call that no, there’s no fire, they’re just a shitty cook.
to add to your humiliation, they dispose of your burnt-to-a-fucking-crisp dinner and make a fuss about you not having anything to eat.
kyle catches how his mentor’s drinking in this person’s appearance, clearly endeared by their embarrassment and manners.
so kyle mentions that it’s a good thing it’s john’s turn to cook for the station that night, and there’s always extra.
you try to decline, that you couldn’t possibly intrude, but the man who introduced himself as soap insists. a visitor, especially one like yourself, always brightens up the place.
next thing you know, you’re being helped into the truck, sandwiched between john and the guy in the skull mask.
something something insert pun about fire.

To all the Americans worrying that Kamala won’t be a good first female president, don’t worry it can’t be any worse than the UK’s three attempts

Interacting with USian Doctor Who fans, and speaking to USian friends of mine, I've noticed something that really amuses me!
The US has no concept of 'Family Show' on the whole.
So this post (& the questions to my friends) was caused by a DW post that called DW 'A Children's Show' which... It isn't.
It's a Family Show.
The easiest way to explain it is with the old spinoffs, the Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood.
TSJA was a children's show. It was designed and written in such a way that children could watch it alone, with no supervision and while adults might derive some enjoyment from it (because it was well written!) it was aimed, written and produced with children in mind.
Torchwood was an adult show. It was designed and written in such a way that directly excluded children, from violence to horror to sexual aspects, it was not, in any way, intended to be watched by children.
Doctor Who is the middle ground. It's a Family Show. It's designed for children AND adults to watch together. The horror isn't so scary that children would be traumatised (I'm talking the average child. I don't doubt there are episodes that scare children but none to the point of trauma), but the plots are a little more complex and there's plenty in there that's more adult oriented.
Doctor Who is aired prime time on BBC. It's a family evening show, everyone sit down together and watch the silly space man together and then the kids go to bed and adults watch more grown up stuff.
It's written, produced and aired in such a way to include everyone! The jokes and things aimed at children might not appeal to the adults but the rest of the show does! The plots may sometimes fly over children's heads, but there's adults watching with them that can explain (IN THEORY! yes, I know that's not everyone's experience)
I also think this is where a lot of USian criticism of the show comes from.
Some think DW is a children's show, so are surprised by the deeper sides of things because, well, it's for children!
And some think DW is an adult show, so think the things designed to appeal to a younger audience are bad, are cheesy, are out of place.
Please note that this isn't a criticism of USian fans! I love y'all and your inclusion in the fandom!
This is something I have noticed as a Brit that has amused me and I wanted to explain!

read the sisters of dorley (alyson greaves, 2021-ongoing), a story containing such highlights as:
a satire of the trans healthcare experience in the uk
a meta-commentary on how trans women engage with/reclaim an erotica genre that both helped and hurt us growing up
the full spectrum of the transfem experience (cute & happy vs. absolute horror) juxtaposed together at all times
a bunch of neurotic trans girls in denial about being a cult
the worst opsec you've ever seen saved only by the secret it's protecting being too ludicrous to think of
more codependent transbian relationships than you can shake a stick at
the weirdest sexy chaser lady you've ever met
and a bunch of novelty mugs with really terrible puns
it's an ongoing doorstopper with every content warning under the sun and it makes me feel every human emotion at once

Whose gonna tell JK Rowling about Roe VS Wade being overturned and about the rising cases of r*pe in the UK that are not being taken to court??? Because me thinks she's asleep during all these if she really believes trans people existing is the biggest assault on women's rights...

sometimes accents are stupid and pronunciations Do Not Generalize
an example of this is vitamin. where i am in america it's pronounced with an "eye" i, so the vi rhymes with "bye." Where I was in the UK it's pronounced with an "ih" I, so the vi is like the vi in "Victoria."
so now if it's taking about the concept of vitamins as a category, i use the US pronunciation. if i'm talking about specific ones, like vitamin c, i use the UK pronunciation.
(usually. if i remember i might swap wildly between the two as i try in vain to remember which pronunciation is correct for the country i'm in)
don't even get me started on the way i use the UK pronunciation of "garage" for everything except for garage sales
