Going away for a while !
Hallo me as always. I think i wrote before I was going to be/was inactive due to school, heavy months full of emotions, new experiences, parties and a very busy schedule. Combine that and finishing school, means I have burnout lol
Whatever I'm fine to be honest, tomorrow I will have a student's trip to celebrate my graduation.
So maybe I'll delete Tumblr because I need space! But I don't think I'll leave fully, and I'll probably reinstall :]
If anyone wants news about my life, here it goes because this is the oversharing website: Finished school with a 9.35 GPA (highest of my grade and the whole school, which surprised me because I thought it was average. The average is 8 😭) and graduated quickly, free of any summer school or debt of subjects. whatever you call it in english. Reassured friendships, lost some, learnt more about my classmates, traveled lots, saw cows and milk factories that were really cool to me, got accepted in an institute to pursue my passion of Psychopedagogy, slept SO much because i lack a routine now and can't function lmfao, i started eating everything i couldn't to prevent tummyaches and discovered great savours again... !!! I drew sometimes, i knit other times, i had my homecoming party and danced all night, i smoked a little in secret with our privates parties with my classmates, drank so much homemade iced tea its unreal i can finish a box of tea by myself in a week and a half, folded so many zines i have an excess and make little messy ones about my life whenever i need a push, kissed Cateto on the forehead so much i think i may have parasites (kidding obvs), used Pinterest for 5 hours daily since mid year, and listened to System of a Down obsessively for monthsss <33
Skip all dat, see you later, happy holidays and any festivity you celebrate, and happy new year if I don't ever get close again here.
xx, xo8ball
#what am i cooking#personal#I heart you all :3 and miss you!!!#I keep my friends in my heart#you know who you are <3

april fools to me is nothing but the great lizard election of 2016 rememberance day. genuinely the best day on this website ever apart from maybe november 5th. oh to wake up on april fool's day and open tumblr, an extremely broken website, only to see they put a ridiculous amount of effort and probably money into a fully functional made-up lizard election. and i really hate saying "you had to be there" but in this case you really had to be there. we couldn't get a working video player for several years but we could get live news reports, a poster maker, a fully functional voting system, 4 campaign blogs, a salamander scandal, "i voted" buttons, and a button that would automatically generate text posts for you to promote a certain lizard to your followers. for one day. tumblr couldn't but #mopcould

hello! welcome to megupedia, a webpage dedicated to sharing and preserving all things kawaii pet megu! below you can find a taglist to navigate the blogs images and info, a list of information/skills we are looking for to help expand the archive, resources, and a small bio about the blog runner.
Please take a moment: Arab.org Daily Clicks - Vetted Organizations Providing Gaza with Food, Water, Shelter, and Medical Care - Vetted Gaza Evacuation Fundraiser List
would you like to help preserve and revive kawaii pet megu? i am looking for other people who are fans of megu, and/or interested in media preservation. there currently is not a dedicated server or forum, but if there is enough interest, i would really like to facilitate communication in the community! please let me know if you are someone who would join!
have a megutastic day!
taglist: Image - Video - GIF - Artwork - Asset - Graphic - Promotional - Gameplay - Development - Screenshot - Resource - Merchandise - Music - Sound - Fan Art - KPM 2.0 (Game Port Project) - Megu Room - (Will update as blog develops!) bio: hi, my name is fang :^) i was an original player of kawaii pet megu when the servers were still up. as an avid fan of virtual pet games, to this day, megu is still my favorite. unfortunately, the game is not only long shut down, it was very obscure and definitely not well documented- Especially in the english language. i am hoping to at least partially change that by attempting to preserve game information, promotional imagery, and overall history of the app. currently the only page i run is this tumblr, but i am hoping to host a website to better display and preserve information about megu!
things i'm seeking: -.apk of the game. as far as i've found, an actual functional .apk is currently lost. (functional as in is even real/will load in any capacity/has the game data uncorrupted. im aware of how much of the game was server-side and will either be fully lost or in great need of reconstruction) -someone knowledgeable enough about .apk files, app emulation, and app development to hopefully aid in my goal of reconstructing the game in some fashion -footage that accurately displays the different mechanics of the gameplay (english especially) -information on the origin of the stroll bgm (did seiya iwagama make it? if so was it released on any albums? through loopcube or another alias?) -anybody who knows more japanese than me . i know a little but not enough to always be helpful, and definitely not enough to directly translate dev blog posts or tweets. -detailed photos/information regarding the plush keychains/official megu plush. and if you'll sell them to me (especially the large ones) please hit me up -ANY of your personal photos/videos/screenshots/art/accounts. if you have screenies or video of your megu from 2010-2013, i would be thrilled to see. i would also love to compile the stories and experiences we all shared with our megu :^)

Ruminations on Social Media Platforms
Since Tumblr has decided that it Needs to Make Money and the Only Way to Make Money is to turn all users into Mindless Servants of the Algorithm, I've been thinking a lot about social media platforms.
Tbh, I'm always thinking a lot about social media platforms, it's kind of part of my field of scholarly endeavor, if you will. But I think a lot about them not in the abstract but as an active user of many of them. And Tumblr is my faaaavorite. And of course so much of what makes Tumblr my favorite is what makes it "unprofitable" or whatever. I put these words in quotes because the definition of "unprofitable" is an extremely narrow one in our capitalist society. Could a website that has allowed many people to form communities / relationships / friendships / connections with people they would otherwise never have met in ways that have vastly improved their lives really be considered unprofitable, ever? Could a website that gives people any moments of pleasure or joy or delight be considered unprofitable? Could a website that sometimes makes you think or at least give you pause be considered unprofitable?
Yeah, it's also a website that's, you know, a hellsite, but, like, it's on the internet and it's made up of people, c'est la vie.
I left Twitter when the Elon Musk thing went down, partly because in those days he was actively taunting Twitter's userbase and it felt a little like I was just on this social media platform being bullied by its owner? Idk, I didn't like it, so I decided to take a break until things calmed down. I really thought he'd get bored and sell it, so kudos to Elon Musk for not doing that. But, anyway, sometimes I think about going back to Twitter. I miss my friends there, I miss knowing what they're up to. Twitter was actually, let's face it, terrible for keeping up with people but Tweetdeck, where you could put people in chronological order and better organize things, was great for it! (As usual, the only way to make the social media platform usable was to use it in a way it wished you wouldn't.)
But I've been going back to Twitter recently to find Tourdust content and I was reminded that Twitter is just...awful. Like, it is almost impossible to have an encounter with Twitter that doesn't drag you down a rabbit hole of terrible discourse of people being awful. I fully admit this is my own fault, for clicking on things I know are going to upset me, but this is why it's better for me just to be off Twitter entirely. Twitter's functionality makes it way too easy to trace and follow outrage, and then you end up just hate-clicking deeper and deeper into these spirals. My mental health is much happier for having given up Twitter, because I'm not a strong enough person not to get sucked into all the unhealthy snippiness of the place.
The reason I've been on Twitter looking for Tourdust updates is precisely because it's better-organized than Tumblr, easier to find the stuff you want to find (in among all the other stuff you wish you wouldn't find, of course). So Tumblr's poor searchability is why I was driven to Twitter, BUT I've come to the conclusion that in a lot of ways that is a feature and not a bug. I can see the ripples of a bunch of kerfuffles that have happened in bandom recently, they lap delicately up against my dash, but by the time they get to me they're the tiniest of waves instead of a tsunami, and if I wanted to figure out what went down, it would take me actual effort. I'm sure I could do it, of course -- it's not like it's utterly impossible -- but it's not as frictionless as figuring out on Twitter. I have to make more of an active effort to go in search of the drama, it's not just RIGHT THERE blinking at me to click on it, and that makes me better able to resist it. I am at heart a lazy person, after all.
So, like, in a way Tumblr doesn't function right, and in a way Tumblr functions beautifully. It all depends on what you're using Tumblr for. And Tumblr was always my escape platform, even when I was still active on Twitter. When I was feeling anxious or sad or upset, I would scroll my Tumblr dash and it would be mindless and soothing and endless (I follow a lot of people. This is for me the key to Tumblr, but see, it all depends on how you're using Tumblr! They don't all share my interests anymore, but I don't care. I just want to sometimes not be in the shouting match that Twitter seems to devolve into so often). And so this is why I feel like it does make sense that there should always be multiple social media platforms in the world. This idea that social media platforms seem to have that they should be the ULTIMATE ONLY ONE is so harmful. Different platforms are for different things. Chill out. (Of course, this is the conquer-the-world mentality formed by capitalism. I am really worried what's going to happen when Netflix realizes it can't keep growing subscribers indefinitely because the population of the planet is finite. Does it know this? I don't think it knows this...)
I was thinking of all this not just because of Tumblr's algorithm thing but because everyone's fussing about Threads, and like, in a way I get it. Clearly I still have a need for Twitter in my life even if I'm simultaneously aware how dysfunctional it is for me. I get that everyone's still trying to find a way to replace Twitter. But first of all, I dislike Facebook as a company so intensely, like, a lot. (I refuse to call it Meta. That's how much I dislike it lol). Second of all, the fact that people seem to think it's a good thing that Threads integrates with your Instagram, I'm just like, ......imagine behaving on Twitter exactly the same way you behave on Instagram? What??? This doesn't even computer to me lol. The same platform that wants you to post photos of your kids should be integrated with the one where people are constantly just yelling at each other over nothing???? Those seem like two completely different places to me?????
Facebook is obsessed with the idea that everyone needs to be Exactly The Same on every corner of the internet, and I just do not agree with that at all. Imagine me being the same on LinkedIn as I am on Tumblr. Like, God, what a boring world that would be!! What a boring life I would be leading!! I guess some people ARE that way, and either that is awesome that they are so fully themselves at work as to just post porn they've written, or it's that they never have any interests that aren't totally aligned with work, which just...is astonishing to me.
What I REALLY think Threads is doing -- and honestly what I think Facebook essentially wants -- is to turn all of us into some curated facsimile of ourselves. I mean, all social media does that, but if you only have one facsimile of yourself, then you never have any other aspects to explore. And if you only have one facsimile of yourself, it's probably going to be the one most designed to make yourself money. Like, isn't that what everyone wants to be doing these days? Using social media to make money? I saw people talking about Threads, and every single one of them was talking about building their brand.
So in a way I am totally sympathetic to Tumblr's problem. They're right. Social media is just a way to sell us stuff now, and if they're not selling us stuff, it's a "problem." Capitalism has finally succeeded in commodifying literally every relationship we have. Literally every single one. And we kind of just let it happen, like there was no other possible way the internet could ever have been designed but to create a handful of billionaires making money off of the fact that people want to feel connected to each other. And then taking that fact and making it all about "but what's the point of connection without making me some more billions?"
Anyway. I wish things weren't like that. Tumblr still is my favorite. Who knows what happens next. Sigh.

Oh no I’m so sorry!! I hesitated to say anything cuz I wasn’t sure if you were just taking your time lol. Sorry we’re down to the last day but let’s pack in a lot of questions in that case!! First off, Ashley is kinda slaying in that vid ngl. And I love learning more about latam Disney channel, thanks for sharing!! What show were they on?? And you have a point about Sabrina lol. Switching gears, ofc ik you love descendants and mal and Ben in particular, who are your favs outside of the core four and why? What are your fav ships besides bal and why? And what are your biggest hopes for rise of red? I hope you have a great holiday and enjoy your gift tomorrow!! Sorry again for the miscommunication!! -gcwca secret Santa
don't worry! i was thinking you were busy or something so i didn't say anything either sdjhdhdsj i know tumblr tends to be the worst functioning website on the planet but we're all still here so i guess that says something about us
okay this is gonna be a long one buckle up
1 - they were in a show called que talento! (yes with an exclamation point) and they were basically playing themselves if they went to high school and were still amateurs lol i really liked the theme song but only the show version bc the studio version sounds awful sorry bruno i know you produced it but it sucks
2 - out of the core four (and ben) i have to say uma is a huge fav for me, probably my 3rd favorite character of the franchise. when i heard china anne mcclain was back on disney channel to play her i was sooooo excited and i can't imagine anyone better for the role. i love that she has such a strong sense of justice and community even if her ways aren't necessarily the best. obviously i love that the franchise makes sure to let us know she and mal are two sides of the same coin and if they weren't both so proud and stubborn they'd be friends, but i like that uma isn't just a carbon copy of mal like they're very much two different characters. uma is driven by collectiveness and she cares so hard about everybody it's almost aggressive and she's such a great example of leadership on the isle (as acknowledged by both ben in d2 and mal in d3 (and as a side note i'm obsessed with mal, ben and uma's dynamic and i could ramble on about it for the next 10 years but that's not the point)) and if i don't stop now this is gonna turn into a mal vs uma analysis
3 - i really really love the idea that mal and uma are exes. like to me that's just canon and no one is gonna tell me otherwise bc it doesn't contradict anything! "and how would you know, mal? you've never had [a boyfriend]" so in my head she could have dated uma idc it was probably quick and messy bc they would have this toxic power struggle which ultimately ends in mal not letting her join the gang. i think they would absolutely kill each other as a couple now bc of how similar they are but as exes? hell yeah that's a vibe
as for present day relationships i'm a fan of harry and uma getting together at some point in the future bc lbr those two are in a weird situationship lmao i also love jay and gil!!! very unexpected but jay realizing how jaded he's become after seeing the beauty of gil experiencing things with such wonder and then deciding to do a gap year so they can travel the world together is something that can actually be so personal
ALSO i'm not usually one for crackships but harry x evie had me like 👀 in d3 bc sorry wtf is this
for the record i don't think they should realistically get together, i don't think they'd work out, but the chemistry is there and for some reason kenny chose to highlight it so idk
4 - oooo so rise of red. here's the thing. i'm fully expecting this movie to be bad sdjdshjdjhsjdh i'm mostly worried about these seemingly amateur writers they got. like. even if descendants is its own little fanfiction thing let's at least try to make things coherent inside its own universe. the fact that they all went to school together defeats the purpose of beast UNITING THE KINGDOMS but well anyway let's see what they're gonna do
i like jennifer phang as a director though! she did two eps of cloak and dagger (one of which is 2x01, one of my personal favs) and the pilot of secrets of sulphur springs, so i know she's competent. and mark hofeling is coming back which is GREAT bc changing the production designer would be a terrible move for a spin-off partly set in present day. i just wish kara saun would come back to do the costumes but oh well
i'm so excited to see your gift!!!!! i hope you have a great holiday as well!!!!!!

Debit vs. Credit: Which Card Should You Be Using? 🤔💳
Hey Tumblr fam, let's talk about something we all use but might not fully understand: debit vs credit card. They’re two different payment methods, and understanding their differences is crucial for your financial health. It's time to get real about Debit vs Credit Card.
I know, it's tempting to just use whichever card is closest to you, but no, you need to understand their core functionality, and how they differ from each other. Both debit cards and credit cards serve different purposes, and it is up to you to learn when to use which.
A debit card is basically like using your own money. It’s directly linked to your bank account and when you use it, you’re spending the money that you actually have. Whereas, a credit card is like borrowing money. You have a credit limit, and you can spend up to that limit, and you will have to pay back the borrowed money later, and you will have to pay interest, if you do not pay the full balance on time.
The best time to use a debit card is for everyday purchases, when you are trying to stick to a budget. And if you are shopping online on verified websites, then debit cards are also a great option. So debit cards are useful, when you are spending within your limits.
On the other hand, the best time to use a credit card is when you want to build credit, when you are shopping on unverified websites, when you have emergency expenses, and also for travel expenses, where you might be able to take advantage of their travel benefits. You need to understand all these benefits, and drawbacks, before making a decision.
So, when it all comes down to it, what’s the best way to use them? You need to be responsible with both of them. Always have a budget, and stick to it. Track your spending, and use debit cards to stay within your limits, and use credit cards strategically. You have to be smart with both types of cards. And this is also the reality of using a Debit vs Credit Card.
Ready to master the world of debit vs credit card? I've got the perfect guide for you!

How to know if you need therapy
What's up mother shuckers. As a mentally ill person of many years, with quite the impressive mental illness resume (5 years of PTSD, extra special bonus trauma, 4 years of therapy, and enough meds that I have to split them into 2 doses so I don't get high in the mornings), I remember having to have a D&D show run by a bunch of comedians tell me that it's perfectly reasonable to get medicated for "just" having panic attacks (shoutout to dimension 20). So here's your comprehensive list of when you know to reach out for help!
You are wondering if you need therapy. If you are wondering if you need therapy, you probably do! That's an indication that there's something in your life that you are unhappy with. Even if it's not directly mental health, a therapist can help you figure out what in your life is holding you back, or what needs changed. And you don't need to actually have a mental illness to have therapy, just emotions!
You feel down, melancholy, worried, paranoid, or exhausted a lot. I know that these are all synonyms for anxiety and depression, but those terms can often be stigmatized or only seen as a diagnosis. Either way, if you need someone to help you through those emotions, a therapist might be an option! If you feel like you aren't justified in seeking out therapy because "other people have it worse," a) you are fully justified, and b) it might be helpful for you to take the PHQ-9 and/or the GAD-7. These are both questionnaires that clinicians use to diagnose patients & to get a general feel of their situation and they can give you a general idea of where you fall in the "this is a normal amount of emotions" to "I should actually be kinda concerned."
You don't have any emotions. This feeling sucks majorly. I would rather be anxious. But the good news is, therapists and potentially medications can help you with this!
You are concerned that you have any mental illness. Sure, self-diagnosing might not be great, but it can be a stepping stone on your way to treatment. Not only that, but if you end up with your very own diagnosis, it's much better than just wondering if you do have it. (Spoiler alert: it's fabulous disease. You have it.)
You want someone to talk to. If you don't have anyone you can trust to talk about certain issues with, or if you think that certain issues might make relationships weird, then get a therapist! In the United States it is literally a felony for them to tell anyone what you said (with the caveat that they will snitch if someone is in danger, including you, or if your therapy records get subpoenaed. They will also tell you this in your first session.)
You find yourself on Tumblr. I'm pretty sure that this website is a mental illness in and of itself. Still, a pretty good indicator that you're a little neurospicy (and queer, but that's beside the point).
Therapy is one of the best choices I ever made, even though God kinda had to force me to. I would have died if I didn't pursue therapy. Today I am doing so much better. I have a deeper relationship with God, a loving boyfriend of nearly a year, and an incredible friend group. Not to mention, I am functional and panic attacks, flashbacks, and depressive episodes are exceedingly rare. I am in college now, and pursuing a degree that I love. It does get better, I promise. So, so, so much better. Giving yourself a chance to get better, and I mean a real chance, not just one therapy session and then getting back to writing your note can change your life in so many ways. Ofc, therapy is not the only way to recovery. But it's a pretty good one, and usually a good place to start.

This seems to suggest an interest in sending users to something other than what they’ve clicked on a link to. If someone clicks a link to see a specific post, they probably want to see that specific post and not random other content. SEO probably isn’t a bad idea, as long as it’s still possible for people to use the site for what it is.
The user already doesn’t know how to navigate the application, because the buttons move around with every update for (as far as I can tell) no particular reason. I suspect any format would be fine if it were consistent, but it seems to me that every time I open the app or the site some button (shop, my page, the post button, etc) has moved. It’s unclear to me how much can change with the “first 25 posts” issue. To my knowledge, new users already have the “best stuff first” toggle on, while many established users have turned it off. As someone who has been using this site for the past 7 years, I think I speak for many users when I say that the feed still being chronological is one of the best features Tumblr has. All I ask is that the toggle still exists, and users are still able to choose a chronological format to their dashboard. I fully agree that the search feature needs some major improvements, and has for a long time. This is the first thing in the post I’m genuinely excited for, since Tumblr’s search function has been lacking for a long time, and for reasons unclear to me. Thank you for looking into it.
I like the idea of removing duplicate reblogs, I think there’s a lot of potential to that. It’s unclear to me what it would mean to “collapse reblog threads”, but as long as it doesn’t limit users’ ability to see what people are saying I don’t think it’s inherently a bad thing. The rest of this point doesn’t make a lot of sense to me, but I do want to mention that the unique conversational way reblogs work is one of Tumblr’s defining features, and one that many users would be sad to see go. We’re happy to use Tumblr, we don’t really want Twitter 2.
The “outdated decision to only show content from followed blogs” on the following page? That’s the purpose of the following page. Again, this seems like a change designed to create Twitter 2, which is a good way to lose Tumblr users uninterested in that style of social media platform. I agree that we need to prioritize supporting new creators, but I don’t think spamming people with content they don’t want is a good way to accomplish that. If users are spammed with content they didn’t ask to see, some users are going to respond with anger, negativity, and hateful messages, much the way that everything on Twitter gets covered with anger and negativity because people are seeing content they didn’t ask to see. This might make new creators more visible, but it would also make them more vulnerable, and worsen the user experience for everyone else. I wholeheartedly agree on the need to limit notification spam, and this is a great direction to move in. Embedded links are another positive change.
Most of this seems fine to me, I don’t have strong opinions on it. I will say, though, that if users have push notifications off that may be because they don’t want notifications, and email spam isn’t necessarily going to be helpful with that. For example, I don’t get tumblr notifications on my phone, and if I started getting emails for every like and reblog, I would block Tumblr’s email address, because I use my email for communication that’s more time-sensitive.
Wholeheartedly agree on this point, unless I’m missing something important. Tumblr, in the minds of a lot of people, is synonymous with weird bugs and a broken website, but it doesn’t have to be. I think heavy focus on this is probably the best place to be putting attention at the moment.
Tumblr is a site with a unique style in the modern age, and that’s a part of what makes it work. When Tumblr tries to copy other social media’s features (livestreaming, non-linear post feeds, etc.), it risks alienating the longtime users and creators who keep the website interesting.
I like this site, and I'd like to keep using Tumblr, not Twitter 2. Thank you.
Tumblr’s Core Product Strategy
Here at Tumblr, we’ve been working hard on reorganizing how we work in a bid to gain more users. A larger user base means a more sustainable company, and means we get to stick around and do this thing with you all a bit longer. What follows is the strategy we're using to accomplish the goal of user growth. The @labs group has published a bit already, but this is bigger. We’re publishing it publicly for the first time, in an effort to work more transparently with all of you in the Tumblr community. This strategy provides guidance amid limited resources, allowing our teams to focus on specific key areas to ensure Tumblr’s future.
The Diagnosis
In order for Tumblr to grow, we need to fix the core experience that makes Tumblr a useful place for users. The underlying problem is that Tumblr is not easy to use. Historically, we have expected users to curate their feeds and lean into curating their experience. But this expectation introduces friction to the user experience and only serves a small portion of our audience.
Tumblr’s competitive advantage lies in its unique content and vibrant communities. As the forerunner of internet culture, Tumblr encompasses a wide range of interests, such as entertainment, art, gaming, fandom, fashion, and music. People come to Tumblr to immerse themselves in this culture, making it essential for us to ensure a seamless connection between people and content.
To guarantee Tumblr’s continued success, we’ve got to prioritize fostering that seamless connection between people and content. This involves attracting and retaining new users and creators, nurturing their growth, and encouraging frequent engagement with the platform.
Our Guiding Principles
To enhance Tumblr’s usability, we must address these core guiding principles.
Expand the ways new users can discover and sign up for Tumblr.
Provide high-quality content with every app launch.
Facilitate easier user participation in conversations.
Retain and grow our creator base.
Create patterns that encourage users to keep returning to Tumblr.
Improve the platform’s performance, stability, and quality.
Below is a deep dive into each of these principles.
Principle 1: Expand the ways new users can discover and sign up for Tumblr.
Tumblr has a “top of the funnel” issue in converting non-users into engaged logged-in users. We also have not invested in industry standard SEO practices to ensure a robust top of the funnel. The referral traffic that we do get from external sources is dispersed across different pages with inconsistent user experiences, which results in a missed opportunity to convert these users into regular Tumblr users. For example, users from search engines often land on pages within the blog network and blog view—where there isn’t much of a reason to sign up.
We need to experiment with logged-out tumblr.com to ensure we are capturing the highest potential conversion rate for visitors into sign-ups and log-ins. We might want to explore showing the potential future user the full breadth of content that Tumblr has to offer on our logged-out pages. We want people to be able to easily understand the potential behind Tumblr without having to navigate multiple tabs and pages to figure it out. Our current logged-out explore page does very little to help users understand “what is Tumblr.” which is a missed opportunity to get people excited about joining the site.
Actions & Next Steps
Improving Tumblr’s search engine optimization (SEO) practices to be in line with industry standards.
Experiment with logged out tumblr.com to achieve the highest conversion rate for sign-ups and log-ins, explore ways for visitors to “get” Tumblr and entice them to sign up.
Principle 2: Provide high-quality content with every app launch.
We need to ensure the highest quality user experience by presenting fresh and relevant content tailored to the user’s diverse interests during each session. If the user has a bad content experience, the fault lies with the product.
The default position should always be that the user does not know how to navigate the application. Additionally, we need to ensure that when people search for content related to their interests, it is easily accessible without any confusing limitations or unexpected roadblocks in their journey.
Being a 15-year-old brand is tough because the brand carries the baggage of a person’s preconceived impressions of Tumblr. On average, a user only sees 25 posts per session, so the first 25 posts have to convey the value of Tumblr: it is a vibrant community with lots of untapped potential. We never want to leave the user believing that Tumblr is a place that is stale and not relevant.
Actions & Next Steps
Deliver great content each time the app is opened.
Make it easier for users to understand where the vibrant communities on Tumblr are.
Improve our algorithmic ranking capabilities across all feeds.
Principle 3: Facilitate easier user participation in conversations.
Part of Tumblr’s charm lies in its capacity to showcase the evolution of conversations and the clever remarks found within reblog chains and replies. Engaging in these discussions should be enjoyable and effortless.
Unfortunately, the current way that conversations work on Tumblr across replies and reblogs is confusing for new users. The limitations around engaging with individual reblogs, replies only applying to the original post, and the inability to easily follow threaded conversations make it difficult for users to join the conversation.
Actions & Next Steps
Address the confusion within replies and reblogs.
Improve the conversational posting features around replies and reblogs.
Allow engagements on individual replies and reblogs.
Make it easier for users to follow the various conversation paths within a reblog thread.
Remove clutter in the conversation by collapsing reblog threads.
Explore the feasibility of removing duplicate reblogs within a user’s Following feed.
Principle 4: Retain and grow our creator base.
Creators are essential to the Tumblr community. However, we haven’t always had a consistent and coordinated effort around retaining, nurturing, and growing our creator base.
Being a new creator on Tumblr can be intimidating, with a high likelihood of leaving or disappointment upon sharing creations without receiving engagement or feedback. We need to ensure that we have the expected creator tools and foster the rewarding feedback loops that keep creators around and enable them to thrive.
The lack of feedback stems from the outdated decision to only show content from followed blogs on the main dashboard feed (“Following”), perpetuating a cycle where popular blogs continue to gain more visibility at the expense of helping new creators. To address this, we need to prioritize supporting and nurturing the growth of new creators on the platform.
It is also imperative that creators, like everyone on Tumblr, feel safe and in control of their experience. Whether it be an ask from the community or engagement on a post, being successful on Tumblr should never feel like a punishing experience.
Actions & Next Steps
Get creators’ new content in front of people who are interested in it.
Improve the feedback loop for creators, incentivizing them to continue posting.
Build mechanisms to protect creators from being spammed by notifications when they go viral.
Expand ways to co-create content, such as by adding the capability to embed Tumblr links in posts.
Principle 5: Create patterns that encourage users to keep returning to Tumblr.
Push notifications and emails are essential tools to increase user engagement, improve user retention, and facilitate content discovery. Our strategy of reaching out to you, the user, should be well-coordinated across product, commercial, and marketing teams.
Our messaging strategy needs to be personalized and adapt to a user’s shifting interests. Our messages should keep users in the know on the latest activity in their community, as well as keeping Tumblr top of mind as the place to go for witty takes and remixes of the latest shows and real-life events.
Most importantly, our messages should be thoughtful and should never come across as spammy.
Actions & Next Steps
Conduct an audit of our messaging strategy.
Address the issue of notifications getting too noisy; throttle, collapse or mute notifications where necessary.
Identify opportunities for personalization within our email messages.
Test what the right daily push notification limit is.
Send emails when a user has push notifications switched off.
Principle 6: Performance, stability and quality.
The stability and performance of our mobile apps have declined. There is a large backlog of production issues, with more bugs created than resolved over the last 300 days. If this continues, roughly one new unresolved production issue will be created every two days. Apps and backend systems that work well and don't crash are the foundation of a great Tumblr experience. Improving performance, stability, and quality will help us achieve sustainable operations for Tumblr.
Improve performance and stability: deliver crash-free, responsive, and fast-loading apps on Android, iOS, and web.
Improve quality: deliver the highest quality Tumblr experience to our users.
Move faster: provide APIs and services to unblock core product initiatives and launch new features coming out of Labs.
Conclusion
Our mission has always been to empower the world’s creators. We are wholly committed to ensuring Tumblr evolves in a way that supports our current users while improving areas that attract new creators, artists, and users. You deserve a digital home that works for you. You deserve the best tools and features to connect with your communities on a platform that prioritizes the easy discoverability of high-quality content. This is an invigorating time for Tumblr, and we couldn’t be more excited about our current strategy.

(sorry if this duplicates, my tumblr is generally horrid even with multiple reinstallations)
basically yeah, people after you kind of filled the post with nonsense in the form of Not Knowing How To Use The Tags™️. i and others like to keep everything tidy. people just dont know how to use tumblr and put their XDD THIS IS SO TRUE in replies and its just :/
(ps. to be fair im not awfully critical with media either i just dont want bored people to get on my ass about whatever thing)
Tumblr is a fully functioning website and app that works great and never has any bugs, ever, it's perfect, I love it.
(Don't worry, this is the only ask that came through ;)
Anyway, that makes sense. The tags are there for your personal comments, people! I know in recent months there's been an influx of people who don't know how to use tumblr, so that may be where some of them are coming from.
Lolll same, people have too much time on their hands to complain about whatever someone else is doing! I wasn't directing that post at anyone or basing it off something someone in particular said, it was just a funny thought I had last night ^^ I've learned to just. Not engage the weirdos who for some reason feel very invested in what other people do when reading/watching/etc. something. Nothing good comes from it.
Anyway thanks for the possible explanation of the phenomenon of people reblogging this one post from me!

Okay, but to be more serious, this does actually make me pretty angry. Staff has to be fully aware of how hostile Tumblr Live is to their users because other countries can’t even see it in the first place - and obviously, someone at Tumblr has to make that possible and has to know that they can’t host it in non-US countries for privacy reasons. I think that’s pretty apparent, but it didn’t occur to me before. My thought process was mostly “Tumblr Live bad > how to turn off Tumblr Live > Jesus Christ, you can’t even turn it off permanently > Tumblr Live EXTRA bad and also staff sucks > What does this mean for the future updates staff will try to make?” It didn’t occur to me that a team of human beings are responsible for complying with data privacy and internet safety standards across the world and have to code the site/app accordingly. (Like, again, this is pretty obvious, but I would have been a lot angrier had I thought that far into it.)
HOWEVER -
The real kicker here is this: after rolling out the post about coming changes and Tumblr’s “core values,” I got a banner ad at the top of my dash advertising a way to give feedback! It linked to a brand new Official Tumblr side blog (I’m assuming) with only one post, reading something to the tune of: “Tumblr CEO Matt is answering your questions! Click here to access the Tumblr Live.” Which like, LOL. No thank you. It was pretty transparent - they make a super inflammatory post about the future of Tumblr, provide one platform that seems like it might actually work for us to be able to provide feedback and maybe get clarification or a vague “we will consider this and will update if we can make any changes” - and that platform is hosted on the single feature on this website that has been complained about the most by existing users!
I have been on Tumblr since the summer of 2012. I have seen Tumblr in a lot of states, some of them functional-ish but fun, some of them functional-ish but bad, some of them clearly broken but beloved, some of them actually good compared to other social media! Over the course of 2012-2017, not a lot of significant changes were made, and they all appeared to mostly be received well, until The Great Porn Ban of 2017. The changes that have been made from 2018-2023 have drawn increasing ire across the board. Tumblr’s user base is notoriously hostile to change, but that’s not because the users are old-man-yells-at-cloud about it. It’s because the nature of the changes staff have chosen to make are directly in conflict with the identity of Tumblr and its users.
The core userbase of Tumblr understands what makes Tumblr special compared to other sites:
a) anonymity
b) no algorithm (somewhat still true - not mandatory)
c) no overt advertisements (no longer true)
d) no censoring (no longer true)
e) emulating 2000s-early 2010s blogosphere rather than being in direct competition with social media sites like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram (increasingly less true)
Look at that list. Of five major things that make Tumblr what it has always been, 2/5 are no longer true, 2/5 are under significant threat, and the only other 1/5 will be IMMEDIATELY taken from us upon using Tumblr Live. This is not hyperbole, and I am not being inflammatory. For any of you who have actually read the terms and conditions of Tumblr Live or done even basic research into the company hosting it, you know that it is a data privacy breach goldmine.
Requiring users to use Tumblr Live to give feedback to the CEO on the proposed changes does 3 things:
a) Uses emotionally-driven decision making to influence users to give up their rights to anonymity and data privacy
b) Skews feedback so that it is primarily coming from users who don’t care about data privacy OR the identity Tumblr has held for 15 years, who are overwhelmingly new users. This could also have the side effect of staff being able to present filtered, positive feedback to shareholders and advertisers - “look, 95% of the people who participated in our Tumblr Live were curious and excited about the coming changes! everyone loves it!”
c) Alienates users who don’t even have the product available in their country and prevents them from being able to effectively communicate feedback through the same avenues as US Americans
I knew a & b when I read the feedback with the CEO was only on Tumblr Live. Now that I know Tumblr Live isn’t even visible or suggested in many other countries, I know c is true, which is just insult to injury.
@staff , you are openly prioritizing feedback from people who both are in the US who can and will give you their personal data to sell to advertisers. You are telling your existing users/core userbase and all users in countries with data privacy protections that you do not care about their feedback. You are telling those people (at least 95% of your userbase, from the most recent metrics I’ve seen on people who use Tumblr Live!) that, because they can’t or won’t let you sell their data, you do not care if they like New Tumblr or if they stay on this site.
In your Core Values and Coming Changes post, you said the things that make Tumblr unique are creators and Tumblr’s vibrant communities. In that very post, you stated you wanted to make changes that will “help” those creators and communities, and attached that will to operating choices that will directly harm them! In addition, you are telling at least 95% of those users (who make Tumblr so unique!) that they are not important to your brand on your mission.
So which is it?
If Automattic wanted to a site that could compete with Twitter/Instagram/TikTok/Facebook, this is, at its very core, not that site. If Automattic wanted a site that could compete with the social media giants, they should have built their own site in the image they wanted it to be, instead of acquiring a decade-old platform that operates at a loss, has millions of users, and is decidedly not that.
When staff runs off the core userbase, several things will happen. Tumblr loses advertisement money due to loss of users. Tumblr ceases to provide the content it previously did, lessening sign-ups of new users. Tumblr stops bringing in a justifiable amount of money for Automattic to run it. Then, one of two things will happen: Automattic will sell Tumblr dirt cheap and as a shell of what it used to be, or Tumblr will shut down. Either way, if they don’t do a 180 on this pretty swiftly, none of us are going to get what we want: happy users on a profitable site they enjoy. And I say this is sincerely and without malice as I possibly can - if I was a Tumblr employee, I would start looking for another job.
I don’t know how many other americans are aware of this btw but I think you should know that europeans don’t have to snooze tumblr live, they can just turn it off permanently. it’s only legal for them to pull this bullshit here.

PLURAL TOOLS!
I felt like this is important for every plural system out there. These are useful tools (which can be as well for fun)
Pluralkit on Discord: Pluralkit is a bot on discord that helps you make "multiple accounts" without having to sign in or out or switch accounts. With just typing a symbol in front or after a message the bot will indicate which account has to post the message. The absolute great thing about PluralKit is that you can connect your pluralkit-account to other websites and apps, which means you can use it on multiple places and multiple ways. link to website
Simply Plural: honesty, I don't know much about this one. But the app will help you keep track on switches! (Connectable to Pluralkit) link to app
Twinote: Twinote is an app that is basically exactly like twitter. EXCEPT the fact this is not online, it is fully intern. It was originally made to keep notes, but you can easily make multiple accounts and 'tweet' stuff. It's pretty practical for keeping notes or just if your gang is switching a lot and want to keep track on what happened during that time. you can even comment, favourite and retweet posts. link to app
Private Discord Server: A private discord swerver is a must for your system. You can make chats for specific usages. Personally I have a "chat" chat. a chat to keep a ranking (using pluralkit's message counts, so I can see who has been more active that day). Note channels, all my mindmates got a specific channel where we can put notes about or for them, things to keep in mind.
Plural discord servers: There are a lot of plural discord servers you could join, either for socialiation or for information about plurality. Just try to find that certain server that suits you and the gang.
Tumblr: Tumblr, well I assume you know tumblr since this post is on tumblr. But the option for making multiple blogs are a great purpose. Half of our gang has a tumblr page (and of course we have our grouppage).
spotify/youtube playlists: well, a good way to get to know each other is listening music together. Of course it can be you have different music tastes, so make a playlist on spotify or on youtube!
Daylio app: Daylio is a mood tracker, something that I have been using since 2015 (which is now 6 years ago), for a mood tracker you can make categories, one of my categories contains the names of each person. we just click on the person being in front or effective for the mood/activity we are currently doing. with the search button you can look for all 'mood's' made by a certain person. It's a good way to keep track on health and figure out what the role and function is about the system member for the system. link to app
I hope this was a good help!
Please feel free to comment/reblog/send-an-ask with other sites and apps useful for the plural community. (so it could expend this post)

you seem nice and knowledgeable about writing so i’ve chosen u to ask this: what is nanowrimo?? I see stuff about it every year and I know it’s something about writing 50,000 words but like… does it stand for something? Where did it come from? Is there like a website or it’s just like a Collective Thing people know about? i finally am curious enough to want to find out more abt this elusive event!!
Oh yes, yes, I live to spread the good word about NaNoWriMo! Hello and thank you for choosing me for this most important of tasks.
What is NaNoWriMo?
NaNoWriMo is a worldwide writing challenge that takes place in November, consisting of both virtual and in-person events. It’s most traditional to write 50,000 new words of original fiction within the 30 days of November, but participants are encouraged to be “NaNo Rebels” and make their own rules if that serves them better.
Does it stand for something?
Yes! NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month.
Where did it come from?
In its very first year, NaNoWriMo was just Some Guy and 20 local people he knew deciding to set up a creative challenge for themselves. I’ll let Chris Baty, the Guy himself, explain in this excerpt from his book No Plot, No Problem: A Low Stress, High Velocity Guide to Writing a Novel in 30 Days:
“The year was 1999, and I was working as a writer in the San Francisco Bay Area, drinking way too much coffee and watching the dot-com boom rewrite the rules of life around me [...] In the middle of it all I decided that what I really needed to do was write a novel in a month. Not because I had a great idea for a book. On the contrary, I had no ideas for a book. [...] The twenty-one of us who signed up for the escapade were in our mid-twenties, and we had no idea what we were doing. But we knew we loved books. And so we set out to write them.”
The numbers grew exponentially from there, with 140 participants in 2000, then 5,000 in 2001, and over 25,000 by 2003. In 2021, over 400,000 people around the world participated in NaNoWriMo!
Is there a website?
There is! NaNoWriMo.org, for all your November writing needs and beyond. Personally, I think the website is about as broken in functionality as Tumblr and also uglier, but I’d hate for that hard sell to discourage you from checking it out.
The fact of it is, if you can wade through a terribly designed website to get to it, the community there is absolutely incredible and chock full of resources for writers including a variety of forums on which to chat and ask questions, pep talks written by published (and sometimes quite famous!) authors, a stat tracker, a buddy system for adding other writers, and ways to find out what local events are happening near you for NaNoWriMo participants and their supporters.
A parting thought
It’s November 16th, thus we’re over halfway through NaNoWriMo 2022, but if you’re interested in participating, I highly encourage you to dive right in this year! No need to go for the 50k if 14 days isn’t enough -- as I covered in a recent post and also mentioned above, you don’t need to do the traditional challenge to be fully embraced and celebrated by the community.
I hope you’ll consider joining us!

Hi all, just a note that (despite posting a lot today) I am actually going to step away from Tumblr for a bit. I have been considering this for a while because I've been noticing that browsing Tumblr has been stressing me out lately and I have a kind of unhealthy relationship to it. I will probably continue to crosspost things I make/write here (especially art, since my Tumblr art blog is probably the most comprehensive, organized, and easy to browse/search archive of my fanart), but I'm going to experiment with blocking the site 24/7 as a normal state of being and deleting the app from my phone. I won't be monitoring my dash, basically. If you want to contact me, the best place is Dreamwidth (or you can check out other options in this surprisingly-still-not-outdated "where to find me" post from 2018). More thoughts on why both using Tumblr and not using Tumblr is very hard for me under the cut.
One thing I will say: the reason why it is always hard for me to leave Tumblr fully (despite how much I complain about it!) is that it is such a good platform for finding and sharing content. Just the number of interesting people producing amazing stuff (and only putting it on Tumblr!) is just so wild. The whole site is so easily searchable. It's so easy to find and follow great accounts.
Part of what makes the content on Tumblr so great is the flexibility of the post creator: it has the ability to easily share large filesize visual media (gifs and video) while also allowing the free interleaving of text, images, headings, links, videos, etc. (i.e. truly multimedia posts). It also has a long upper limit on text posts, including cut functionality... All of this makes Tumblr extremely flexible in terms of what exactly can be posted and shared on the website. It works well for both short-form and long-form content. It is just a very powerful website. (I... really do not know how people, especially artists, use sites like Twitter. I would go insane at the terrible image cropping that forces people to click in order to view your actual art piece and the complete lack of tools for searching/filtering/gallery view.)
What that means is that you can encounter some of the weirdest, most creative stuff on this site. All sorts of people -- artists, writers, musicians, knitters, programmers, cosplayers, conlangers, whatever -- can make this place their home and that is truly a delight. You just never know what you'll get.
Also, Tumblr's usability has been steadily improving over time. For example, one of the things that used to be the case that really held Tumblr back from being a good platform for sharing content was that it would exclude posts with links from tag searches. This made it really hard to have fannish discussions where you're referencing a post or an interview or a fic or something that you want people to look at before reading your discussion, or you're making some points and you want to support them with actual references, or you just want to link to a creator's site rather than reposting their content on Tumblr (which is a dickish thing to do without permission). It used to be the case that trying to be helpful and responsible by providing external links like this would punish your content and hide it from people who would be interested in seeing it. Since Tumblr lifted this softban on external links, though, the site has really jumped up in usefulness for me, especially since my main form of fannish engagement (as you might have noticed) is meta, which heavily benefits from leaving people breadcrumbs to other material which they can follow up on as they choose.
That said, there are two ways in which Tumblr has not and likely will continue to not work well with me:
First, the lack of circles/privacy settings (on an individual post level, especially, but I mean, Tumblr doesn't even have that at a user level...). For various reasons, I do not like to talk about anything in public that could easily be found by someone who knows me in real life and is identifying enough for them to be like, "Ah I see, chacusha is [person I know] then." So there's a lot about me that I'm willing to frankly talk about under the privacy of friendslock (e.g. on Dreamwidth) but will never ever post on Tumblr. This includes: pictures/videos of me, my job (where I work and what my line of work is), my family, friends, or partner (outside of the barest references), art I've done that I share with people under my real name, my thoughts on places I've lived, detailed personal anecdotes that involve other people, etc. Not related to being recognized, but I also at some point decided I wanted my Tumblr to be my dedicated fannish engagement space, and so I just don't post/reblog political content or even contentious opinions on the Fandom Discourse (since I know that if I started opining on this, I would not Stop and it would utterly swamp my normal positive fannish content). This doesn't mean I am an apolitical person or that I don't have strong opinions on the Fandom Discourse. I just don't really have an outlet for that on Tumblr. Anyway, for various reasons, there's just a lot of stuff I don't feel comfortable talking about on Tumblr and I feel like this makes it hard to make friends on this site because I'm just this big mystery box and I want to keep it that way.
Second, Tumblr, like most social media sites, does tend to be geared toward (1) the "short attention span" infinite-scroll form of media consumption (easy to pick up and set down, easy to kill time in small breaks) and (2) largely amusing viral content (jokes, shitposts, cute animal videos, memes, content reposted from Twitter, Tiktok, etc.) that is now the default form of almost all social media. I find this as entertaining and amusing as everyone else, but sometimes I get tired of it or cranky or just feel out of step with what people consider funny. Like, for the first thing ("tired of it"), if you know me, I tend to post very tl;dr quite serious, almost academic, analyses of things. These things get very little engagement on Tumblr which is fine because I too also struggle with reading long-form content in general and also especially on this site when I'm mainly browsing things in infinite scroll mode. Just... no one's got time for that! I post it mainly to organize my thoughts and share them with people who might be interested (if my thoughts were so simple I could dash them off in an off-the-cuff bite-sized post, it would be of no use to me to write a post sharing them, to be honest), so I don't mind that. But I do find that when the ratio between "interesting thoughtful content" and "lol shitpost that went viral"/"off-the-cuff lapslock keysmash yelling about fictional characters to vaguely convey enthusiasm" is too low, I just don't actually have fun on a site and I am trying to be more self-aware about when that is happening.
Regarding the third thing ("out of step"), I've had this problem with Star Trek fandom in particular where you'll see posts that just, like, make stuff up about the show. They'll have a very exaggerated account of something that happened in an episode, or some misleadingly-juxtaposed screencaps that remove context and say "this literally happened." I understand exaggeration for comedic effect, and also possibly I am just missing tone on the internet where "literally" means the opposite of "literally" etc. IDK, maybe I am just being cranky and dense, to be honest. But yeah, Star Trek is a deeply silly show. You don't really have to make things up for things to be ridiculous or outlandish?
But yeah, for obvious reasons, bite-sized shitposts and frequent funny posting tends to not only go more viral but also get people more followers and reach. This is something I've noticed over the years, which is that the #1 thing that contributes to popularity on the internet is just consistent prolificness. This is a very bad fit for how I like to engage with fandom. Honestly, a lot of my negative emotional reaction is 100% on me where I am getting demoralized by how popular shitposting is, but the internet isn't some kind of popularity contest? That super-viral content over there doesn't have any bearing on what people think of the content I'm posting over here? Popularity, following, and engagement isn't actually a marker of social approval?? And yet my brain is like "mm yeah I'm apparently Doing It Wrong / people secretly hate me / maybe if I shitposted more I would Fit In" which is not a healthy way to feel about social interactions on a website! I hate all of this!
Anyway, the takeaway is, while I love the content I stumble across on Tumblr, I don't think browsing Tumblr actually makes me happy overall. I also don't think I can make friends here even though everyone here seems like a cool person with a cool life. And I think both of these things will continue to be the case as long as Tumblr does not have the concept of a friendslock and as long as Tumblr's audience is mainly browsing content for amusing easily-consumed stuff (or I somehow manage to retrain my brain to Not Care about the popularity dynamics that naturally follow from that fact). The combination of not being able to share personal things about myself plus interpreting innocuous things as social rejection has made the whole experience of being on Tumblr quite socially isolating, despite people being personally very nice and kind to me -- through no one's fault but my own, really. Unfortunately, socially isolating social media is something I actually can't handle right now, coming out of a long lockdown where I'm already struggling with the effects of long-term social isolation.
I think if I come back to Tumblr, I will need to learn how to curate my feed better and possibly block some accounts? So far, I've only ever had to block a few tags, so I honestly do not know how to block people or what happens when you do this and how I should decide when to do this -- any tips appreciated. (I think I have been very spoiled by being in extremely tiny fandoms up until this point, like, "Huh? You guys block people??" I am not adjusting well, lol.)

What does modern feminism do that you don't agree with? This is genuine btw
A couple things before I start:
- This is not meant to bash all the feminists out there unless they fit into what I’m saying. I know there are good feminists out there
- When I say ‘you’ I’m not meaning you, I’m saying it in a general way
-I hope I get my point across and it’s clear. I sometimes struggle with that
Also I’m sorry this is so long and it’s in no particular order and I hope none of this comes across as being aggressive or anything
~~
A lot of my issues with the movement boils down to attitudes. To me, that is very telling of its true colors. And I do try not to necessarily judge an entire movement from just the bad people because I know that isn’t fair, although I do feel like the bad feminists have taken over the movement and end up drowning out the good voices and that’s why we hear more negativity than positivity.
One thing that I have issue with the lack of respect towards those that disagree whether it’s with the movement itself or it’s a particular thing. For a movement that preaches about a woman’s choice, I don’t feel that really happens like it should. I don’t know, maybe I’m wrong here but depending on what the topic is I get a general impression like you’re not really supposed to disagree with what’s being side. You do and you might have someone lash out at you (that’s another point I have). Or if you say you’re anti feminist, you have people coming up with these reasons why they think you are; one being internalized misogyny and you get called a pick-me which I find a bit insulting. I should be able to have an opinion without someone assuming I’m trying to get a man’s attention or I can’t think for myself or I hate other girls. That isn’t it! Wouldn’t you think that is misogynistic?
And if it’s not internalized misogyny, then there are other factors; her being white (which usually then goes on to sound racist) or it’s because she has money or internalized racism or whatever they come up with. And it sounds condescending and that just bugs me. Hey, maybe instead of some underlying reason, we just don’t agree.
or you have people try to stick the label on anyway.
‘If you believe in equality you’re a feminist’
The label means nothing. I don’t understand why some will focus on this so much. I don’t want to be called a feminist. I don’t need to. In the same way, it’s not necessary for me to refer to myself as an MRA (men’s rights activist). And yeah, I know this says it’s an “MRA blog” that’s what I had when I started. But ultimately, the label isn’t important. I’m all for equality. It’s cool, it’s great. But I see this sort of thing (online that is) being forced on people and the thing is, with that wording it makes it sound like the movement is all inclusive when it’s not. You have to have certain politics and for the most part (unless you’re a religious feminist) you have to be pro choice otherwise you’re not a ‘real’ feminist.
My next issue is all the aggression. You can just tell sometimes with how people respond online or if you catch a video that someone posted. And not only that, but how quickly people fall into name-calling or just all around acting like a child. And for the most it seems pretty acceptable to some because it keeps happening. It’s not hard to find on this site or otherwise. If you can’t communicate your opinions about something without having a fit or blocking someone (excluding if they just keep harassing you) then you’re not mature enough. That shows me you don’t really care about having a real discussion. And some can say that it happening on here is probably done by teenagers and to an extent they’re probably right. But it happens on other sites and in real life as well and it’s more than just teens. It’s people my age and older and that’s not cool.
And then we have how some like to ignore the differences between men and women. Sure, yes, there are many things a woman can do just like a man but we also have to acknowledge our differences. I don’t see a lot of that with some forms of feminism. STEM, for example, is something I would attribute the differences more to just how men and women tend to be rather than sexism. Could there be certain circumstances where it is sexism? Sure, I suppose you can’t rule it out entirely. Otherwise I would say it’s just what they’re happy doing. I know girls who are doing science stuff or business things but I also know girls who are going to be teachers or psychologists or nurses. It’s not that they're actively being told by everyone that they can’t do it(I suppose unless they live in some other country like that). That’s just what they want to do, you know, their choice. Just like how some men go towards a job like with computers or farming or they’re pre-school teachers or gynecologists.
I found an interesting fact (source will be posted below) that said women are actually preferred over men two-to-one for faculty positions. The study was done by psychologists from Cornell University with professors from 371 colleges/universities in the US. It also noted that: “recent national census-type studies showing that female Ph.D.s are disproportionately less likely to apply for tenure-track positions, yet when they do they are more likely to be hired, in some science fields approaching the two-to-one ratio revealed by Williams and Ceci.”
Yet, we need to ask ourselves honestly, how often do facts like these get passed around vs the idea that women are suffering from misogyny and therefore are unable to fully represent in STEM jobs?
The next thing I want to address is misandry. Now there are a good portion of people who don't think it exists or if it does, it's really not much of an issue because of the "power" and the "privilege" men have within society. And to me, I have a problem with that. If feminism is supposed to be for men as well, I would think they would want to combat misandry as well as misogyny. If someone really doesn't think it exists, I would suggest that the person really take a look at what goes on in real life and online that's directed towards men.
There's the whole "male tears" thing which is on coffee mugs and t-shirts. There's the kill all men/yes all men thing. All of which are supposed to be jokes and if a man says something about it he gets mocked for his "fragile masculinity"
That's just not okay. They're being immature and a bully which they usually try to justify (men have done this and that throughout history to women) but you just can't.
I found this article, this really really atrocious article. It's one of those open letter things and found on this feminist website (feminisminindia) and I almost believed it to be satire with how.... stereotypically Tumblr it was. I did research and looked at the info regarding the site and nope, it's a serious site. I'll post the article below but I'll also summarize it:
Basically this woman is telling the men in her life that she will not stop saying "men are trash or other radical feminist opinions." She's saying it because women and others have suffered so much at the hands of the patriarchy because they're not straight white men. She goes on to say:
So let’s establish: misandry isn’t real. Just like unicorns and heterophobia, misandry is a myth because it isn’t systematic or systemic. Unlike misogyny, cis men don’t face oppression purely based on their gender. While they may encounter instances of racism, homophobia and ableism, they are not dehumanised as a function of their gender identity (read: cis privilege).
That is wrong. Absolutely wrong. Misandry is real. "Cis" people do face oppression purely based on their gender. Anyone can. To deny that lacks understanding.
And the rest is just saying that: It is time to start hating on men-as-a-whole and starting celebrating the men that you are.
And: Because at the end of the day, feminists need men. Whether it’s because you wield structural power or because we genuinely value your existence, we need to band together to destroy ‘men’ because men are trash, but you, if you made it to the end of this, are probably not. Prove me right.
I would imagine this is a common viewpoint. And it's not a good one. If you genuinely think a whole group as a whole is bad you need to reexamine your thoughts. It's not "men" that are bad, it's the sexist people.
To wrap this up (I'm sure you might be tired of reading this lol); like I said, the attitudes play a huge part of it. Modern feminism, in my opinion, is just not good enough for me to say I agree with it and want to identify as one. I just can't
