Love in this very serious chapter (Theon I TWOW) when Stannis is interrogating Theon and they both pause to mutually roll their eyes at Asha bringing her pirate polycule to the party.

Mind you Theon is currently chained up like this:

Iron Islands naming conventions are soooo funny because on one hand you have the most viking-ass names that ever did exist you've got Stygg you've got Gelmarr you've got Harl Jorl Qarl you've got Ragnor. A good number of them overlap with Freefolk names (idk what to do with that information either). But then a small handful would better fit in a Jane Austen novel with how fucking posh they sound in isolation. This is a post about Tristifer Botley.

the asoiaf relapse has hit full force and instead of finishing any of my wips i wrote this<3 post-adwd with a smidgen of theon/tris botley because I love niche a pairing
Summary:
Theon learns that his father is dead whilst hanging by the wrists from the wall of Stannis Baratheon’s solar, heard faintly through his all-consuming pain during a conversation between his sister and the so-called king.

Ironborn Character Bracket
Tumblr media
Welcome to the Ironborn Character Bracket where your ironborn faves face off against each other and you get to vote to pick the winner!
Quick FAQ under the Read More
How will this work?
Characters will face off against each other in a poll in pairs as shown in the bracket above. The winner of each pair will progress to the next round, until there is a final winner. Basically, like a regular single-elimination bracket. Voting will start on September 22, 2023 and each poll will run for one week. Once all round of 16 polls close, the quarter final polls will open within 24 hours and each of those will also run for one week. Rinse and repeat for the semifinal and final rounds. We encourage you to follow the blog to not miss any new polls!
Where are Theon and Asha?
We decided to leave them out for the sake of making this a little more interesting/exciting and less predictable. Let’s see who else y’all stan ❤
Only 16 contestants? Such a small bracket!
Yes, unfortunately there are not a lot of significant ironbron characters. We wanted a bracket that would break down nicely and evenly. So for one more round we’d need to go up to 32 characters, and while we could find 32 named ironborn characters, at some point it becomes a little arbitrary which name-only/single mention characters would be picked vs. not picked. We’re sorry if we’ve excluded your minor fave! Feel free to tell us who they are in an ask so we can take that into consideration next time.
Can I send in propaganda and such?
We won’t be posting propaganda under the polls, BUT feel free to send asks with propaganda, comments, thoughts, whatever, and we’ll publish them here for everyone to see!

I couldn’t help but notice that Arianne Martell and Asha Greyjoy have a lot in common and are pretty much foils of each other’s. My question is if they met do you think they’d get along maybe even become friends?
I think it’s important to remember that Asha and Arianne still come from extremely different cultural and personal backgrounds. Asha is extremely comfortable with a weapon in hand and on the deck of a ship as its captain; Arianne has relationships of varying degrees of closeness with her martially trained cousins and a firm friendship with Garin of the Rhoynar orphans, but she’s certainly no warrior or sailor herself. (And this is without getting into the wholly separate politico-cultural histories of the ironborn and the Dornish.) Asha seems to show little interest in marriage, especially the sort of diplomatic matches Westerosi aristocratic women are often subject to (embodied in her rejection of Tristifer Botley’s domestic vision for the two of them in favor of “adventures”); Arianne, by contrast, fully accepted that she would marry for political alliance (and specifically that she would not marry a countryman), and indeed seems set to use her hand in marriage as a way of advancing her political interests with the would-be Aegon VI. Asha also enjoyed - well, I wouldn’t call it affection from her father, but something like regard from Balon as a de facto son and heir; Arianne, by contrast, was forced by her father into an artificial rivalry with brother Quentyn, and came to believe that Doran neither loved her nor wanted her to succeed as Princess of Dorne.
I’m not saying these characters could never see eye to eye or even be friends. However, I think there is sometimes a gap between “the author is using these two characters to explore similar themes” and “these characters are similar and would be friends if they met”.

Spoilers, profanity, Jaime x Brienne. Game of Thrones. A Song of Ice and Fire. AFfC The Kraken's Daughter (repost)
Close The Door And Come Here - AFfC The Kraken's Daughter (repost)
With Asha and The Reader, maybe the Ironborn aren't so bad after all? Theon Greyjoy! Go see your Mama! Does Tristifer Botley understand how anatomy works, or is he expecting a Kraken to show up with his dozen children? And, we get some meaty questions on Lady Stoneheart, the Targs, and why Dany gets so much fandom hate.

TrisTheon + "so much has changed but I'm the same, yes I'm the same!"
They were boys together on Pyke - Theon remembered that well, even when he hadn't seen Tris in years, even hanging in Stannis' tower, even though it was Symond who had been Theon's agemate back then. But he still remembered, and Tris did too apparently, from the way his eyes stole quick glances at Theon across the campfires and on the long treck through the snow and the woods. By the time they hit seawater, Theon wanted to shake him a little, to say, "But you remember what I was like before. Don't give me those eyes, Botley, I know you remember, and I'm not really that different now." It's foolish - because of course he is different, probably they both are, but it doesn't really feel like it when Tris smiles at him, too warm for the start of winter. Improbably, infuriatingly, with Tris beside him, he feels almost like he did before, before any of it. It's a feeling he likes.
[Send me a ship and a prompt and I will write a three sentence fic.]

“We don’t need any more Dark Lords.”
We don’t need any more Dark Lords, we don’t need any more, ‘Here are the good guys, they’re in white, there are the bad guys, they’re in black. And also, they’re really ugly, the bad guys.’
— GRRM, 2011
“I thought him evil at first, a dark king leading his people into ruin, but watching him… he is ruined already, hollow, empty. He feasts on the lives of your people because he has no life of his own, not even a name that is truly his. Once I wondered what he thought of, alone, all those days and nights in darkness. I know now that he does not think at all. Perhaps he dreams. If so, I think he dreams of death, of an ending. He dwells in that black empty cabin as if it were a tomb, stirring from it only at the scent of blood. And the things he does… it is more than rashness. He courts destruction, discovery. He must want an end, a rest, I believe. He is so old. How tired he must be.”
“Julian is old, Abner, old. The thirst … he has not felt the thirst in years… hundreds, thousands of … years… that was why the drink… had no effect. I never knew, none of us did. You can outlive the thirst, and he… he did not thirst… but he fed, because he chose to, because of those things he said that night, you remember, strength and weakness, masters and slaves, all the things he said. Sometimes I think… the humanity of him is all hollow, a mask… he is only an old animal, so ancient it has lost even the taste for food, but it hunts on nonetheless, because that is all it remembers, that is all it is, the beast. The legends of your race, Abner, your vampire tales… the living dead, the undead, we bear those names in your stories. Julian… I think with Julian it is the truth. Even the thirst is gone. Undead. Cold and hollow and undead.”
— Fevre Dream, Chapter Twenty-Eight
“We shall have no king but from the kingsmoot.” The Damphair stood. “No godless man—”
“—may sit the Seastone Chair, aye.” Euron glanced about the tent. “As it happens I have oft sat upon the Seastone Chair of late. It raises no objections.” His smiling eye was glittering. “Who knows more of gods than I? Horse gods and fire gods, gods made of gold with gemstone eyes, gods carved of cedar wood, gods chiseled into mountains, gods of empty air … I know them all. I have seen their peoples garland them with flowers, and shed the blood of goats and bulls and children in their names. And I have heard the prayers, in half a hundred tongues. Cure my withered leg, make the maiden love me, grant me a healthy son. Save me, succor me, make me wealthy … protect me! Protect me from mine enemies, protect me from the darkness, protect me from the crabs inside my belly, from the horselords, from the slavers, from the sellswords at my door. Protect me from the Silence.” He laughed. “Godless? Why, Aeron, I am the godliest man ever to raise sail! You serve one god, Damphair, but I have served ten thousand. From Ib to Asshai, when men see my sails, they pray.”
The priest raised a bony finger. “They pray to trees and golden idols and goat-headed abominations. False gods …”
— A Feast for Crows, The Iron Captain
“I think the Damphair’s dead. I think the Crow’s Eye slit his throat for him. Ironmaker’s search is just to make us believe the priest escaped. Euron is afraid to be seen as a kinslayer.”
“Never let my nuncle hear you say that. Tell the Crow’s Eye he’s afraid of kinslaying, and he’ll murder one of his own sons just to prove you wrong.” Asha was feeling almost sober by then. Tristifer Botley had that effect on her.
“Even if you did find your uncle Damphair, the two of you would fail. You were both part of the kingsmoot, so you cannot say it was unlawful called, as Torgon did. You are bound to its decision by all the laws of gods and men. You—”
— A Dance With Dragons, The Wayward Bride
When Euron came again, his hair was swept straight back from his brow, and his lips were so blue that they were almost black. He had put aside his driftwood crown. In its place, he wore an iron crown whose points were made from the teeth of sharks.
“That which is dead cannot die,” said Aeron fiercely. “For he who has tasted death once need never fear again. He was drowned, but he came forth stronger than before, with steel and fire.”
“Will you do the same, brother?” Euron asked. “I think not. I think if I drowned you, you’ll stay drowned. All gods are lies, but yours is laughable. A pale white thing in the likeness of a man, his limbs broken and swollen and his hair flipping in the water while fish nibble at his face. What fool would worship that?”
“He’s your god as well,” insisted the Damphair. “And when you die, he will judge you harshly, Crow’s Eye. You will spend eternity as a sea slug, crawling on your belly eating shit. If you do not fear to kill your own blood, slit my throat and be done with me. I’m weary of your mad boastings.”
“Kill my own little brother? Blood of my blood, born of the loins of Quellon Greyjoy? And who would share my triumphs? Victory is sweeter with a loved one by your side.”
— The Winds of Winter, The Forsaken (Aeron I)
Mr Writer has said, “no more Dark Lords! What we need are edgelords.”

Watchful by VagrantWriter Rated: Teen And Up Audiences Words: 3931 Archive Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Category: M/M Characters: Theon Greyjoy/Tristifer Botley Summary: Asha sends Tris to watch after Theon. But Tris is only human, after all.
I bet we all wondered what it would be like for Theon if he had something like a loyal/friendly presence in Winterfell rather than be alone with his bad choices, and this is such a good exploration! Obviously, Theon doesn't really appreciate that in favor of projecting ALL of his issues and mistrust over the one ironborn that seems a soft target, but that only makes for a very fun hostile-until-it-isn't dynamic. The idea of having Tris sent by Asha to keep an eye on the failboat little brother is so good and makes for a really good parallel between the two - both willing to die in mission for someone who will never love them, and it makes the loyalty that forms between them even more satisfying as two people who feel both wrong/too soft for the islands but react very differently.
“Am I Ironborn?” Theon paced back towards the other man, treading over his own boot prints in the mud. Tris recoiled as he came within striking distance, but Theon didn’t strike him. Instead he grabbed Tris by his tunic and gave him a rough shake. “Am I us?”
Tris’s eyes were large as they met Theon’s, his lips drawn in. “Of course.”
Theon sought out the lie, but Tris didn’t have a face for concealing lies.
