The Tintin Timeline

So the Tintin canon continuity is, uh, a mess. It's a "floating timeline" specifically, which is a literary term for when serialized media takes place during the present of whenever it's being worked on. However, nobody seems to have taken a look at the exact timeline within the canon, and exactly how long the stories take place within Tintin's life. All of the following data is approximate, with most of it taken from the setting boxes (i.e. "Two days later") and by studying how many nights pass within each story.

A quick note: Certain spans of time in the book are designated with vague quantifiers, such as “several” or “a few”. However, 7 days is always designated with “a week”. I explain my estimation where necessary, but I usually see the former spans as being within 3-5 days. Again, these are all approximations and I am not claiming any sort of canon declaration; these are presented for entertainment purposes.

Land of the Soviets: 9 days

Congo: 22 days (Tintin spends at least 17 days in the Congo, while his journey there on the boat is said to take “several days”. Given the mode of transport and the distance, I have estimated it as being about 5 days.)

America: approx. 3 weeks (20-23 days)

Cigars: approx. 2 weeks (15-18 days)

Blue Lotus: approx. 4 weeks (25-30 days)

The Broken Ear: approx. 6 weeks (39-42 days)

Black Island: 7 days

Ottokar: approx. 2 weeks (14-15 days)

Crab: approx. 2 weeks (13-14 days)

Shooting Star: approx. 5 weeks (the main story elapses over 20 days; the last page has a scene “some weeks” later, which I interpreted as a fortnight)

Unicorn: approx. 10 days

Rackham: approx. 48 days (The main story seems to elapse over 45 days, and the last page seems to happen some days later)

Seven Crystal Balls: 9 days

Prisoners of the Sun: at least 41 (there are three unaccounted-for periods, when 1. Tintin’s group is climbing the mountains [“days go by” until “one morning”, which I interpreted as being at least 3 days], 2. when they trek through the jungle [”the days go by”, again 3 days], and 3. at the end of the book [”several days later”, interpreted as 6 days])

Black Gold: approx. 27 days (13 days + “some weeks” estimated as a fortnight. The ensuing album opens with Haddock and Tintin returning home, where they hear Calculus has been gone since three weeks before)

Destination Moon: approx. 144 days (This one has the larges jumps in time. The first 36 pages happen over 41 days, then “some months” pass, estimated at 3)

Explorers: 10 days

Calculus Affair: 11 days

Red Sea Sharks: 30 days

Tibet: 33 days

Castafiore Emerald: at least 21 days (there are 18 accounted-for days, and then a period indicated just with “The days go by”. Given how most time lapses in the book are spans of 3 days, this period was at least three days long as well)

Flight 714 to Sydney: 1 day + 7 days (main story; pages 60-62 take place about a week later)

Picaros: 15 days

Total: The events of the The Adventures of Tintin take place over approximately 613 days.

But is it a linear timeline? We have no word on how much time passes between each album, but we’ll add at least one week between each one - except for America/Cigars/Lotus, Destination/Explorers, Crystal/Prisoners, and Unicorn/Rackham - just to give each album’s settings enough time to transition into a new story. This gives us an additional 17 weeks (17 x 7 days). With all of this calculated together, the series happens over the course of approximately 2 years, 2 days...at least, according to a bored fan who likes to count (ง ื▿ ื)ว

A/N: Impressed with myself right now, I wrote this in like fifteen minutes... while I procrastinated on doing the dishes (which I did) and finishing my other works... :|

You run into their room, door banging against the wall earning some banging from the annoying and terrible- “Hey, jackwad! Try fisting yourself before trying to bang one of us, huh.” 

That certainly got him to stop, point one - you, the jackwad Todd - zero. 

You turn to your favorite duo with a wide smile that will make your muscles sore later if you don’t stop now. "What up my favorite nerds?" You say with a sensual tone before flopping onto Bob’s bean bag chair (which you may or may not have claimed as yours… closer to may have). 

"I resent that,” your favorite southern boy with wired glasses replies, not looking up from his homework. 

"Kiss me, Bob," you say, knowing you’ll get some kind of reaction out of him. 

"Can't,” he uses his pencil to tap his open textbook, “I have to study." 

Your lips slowly form into a pout as you turn to your favorite curly haired boy. "Mickey baby, he won't play along." 

He chuckles, closing his book, sitting up on his bed. “That’s because he’s working so hard to provide for us or did you forget?” He holds his hand out for you to take, you accept, placing your hand in his. He tugs on you and gestures for you to come closer. 

You could never resist his puppy dog eyes and give in, settling in between his thighs. “Hi,” you tilt your head back, looking up at him. 

He smiles with an airy chuckle escaping him, “hi back.” 

You stare into his eyes for a few seconds. “Has he taken a break?” 

The silence and the lips to the side move tell you it’s been a while since Bob looked away from that damn book. 

“Perfect. Oh! Oh! Oh my god. I didn’t even tell you why I was so happy when I came in. I have to show you two.” You crawl over to your bag and pull out the new Uno cards you found while you were out shopping yesterday. “Bob. Bob. Bob. I won’t stop till you look over at me. Bob. Bo-” 

He spins around in the chair, resting his arm against the back of it. “Yes?” He stresses the word with a slight hiss mixed with a sigh. 

You give him another one of your dazzling smiles. “I found the best Uno I could have ever found, and I am not exaggerating.” 

“Really? I’m not studying for-” 

You lift the box up into the air like the scene in the Lion King when Simba is lifted into the air for all of those in Mufasa’s kingdom to see. 

“Oh my god,” the two say at the same time as they turn towards one another. 

“Is that-” Mickey starts. 

“What I think it is?” Bob finishes for him. 

“Yes,” you nod. “Yes, it is. It’s-” 

“Star Trek Uno!” They both lunge at you, hugging you as they do their best to not crush you. 

“You’re the best,” Mickey mumbles into your shoulder. 

“I’m taking a break,” Bob mutters as he pushes himself up. 

They move to sit criss cross (apple sauce) from one another before turning to you, who still lays on the ground. “I told you two you’d like it.” 

“Let’s play already,” Mickey whines. 

You scoff, flipping your hair out of your face. “Shut up and be patient, you brat.” 

“I’m not a brat,” he mumbles. 

“Yeah, and Bob’s a bottom.” 

“Why am I being dragged into this?” 

“It sounds good.” 

“No,” he shakes his head. “No, it doesn’t.” 

“Yes, it does.” You shush him before he could try and fight back with another comment. “Shut up and prepare to lose nerds.”

I look back on my latest reblog, about ten hours ago, of @anexperimentallife​‘s post about Maus to check whether the Popper Paradox of Tolerance infographic has been removed from my latest reblog as it was from the OP and from reblogs of the OP; and what do I see:

Huh.

So I click on the question mark in the banner to review the community guidelines. There isn’t anything in this post that meets the guidelines’ definition of adult content unless somehow there’s a misapprehension that there’s an excerpt from Maus which includes the famous depiction of concentration camp nudity which got the book banned last week in Tennetuckybamaippi or wherever. Except I noticed something, circled in red here:

SYNOPSIS: In the year 3008, the police space cruiser Infinity is given a mission to acquire a mysterious energy source known only as the "Blue Star." The crew, including female robot Galaxina, set a course for Altair One, a trip which will take them twenty seven years in cryosleep...

THOUGHTS/ANALYSIS: Galaxina is a 1980 sci-fi parody film. Set in the year 3008, the space police cruiser Infinity is patrolling the edges of known space when its inept crew are contacted with a mission: to retrieve a rock known only as the "blue star," which is a source of great energy. Sensing a chance at riches and glory, the crew embark on the trip, aided by their female android Galaxina. Being a parody film, the story isn't the most important aspect of the experience, and is mostly an amalgamation of familiar tropes. usually this eases viewers in so they don't get bogged down in details, and gives the comedy plenty to lampoon, but here, the problems with the plot structure and pacing severely hamper that effort. The first half of the film is essentially just empty space, where we are introduced to a crew of unlikeable characters that do little other than bicker and moan, while throwing out the occasional crass joke. For forty minutes this continues until we finally get a plot: the crew are asked to go and fetch the mysterious "blue star" rock, and have to spend twenty seven years in cryosleep to reach the planet of Altair One. While the crew is in stasis, Galaxina learns to speak and modify herself to be more human, and so is actually able to be a character of some substance. The second half of the film decides to add some parody of Western films into the mix, diluting the already weak sense of direction and purpose has even further. That said, the film does find it's footing a bit more in the second half, with more direct parodies such as the pointy eared bartender "Mr. Spot," and a motorcycle cult/gang who worship their mythical God "Harley David-Son." By this point though, there's not enough time for the film to really accomplish anything of note, and still most of the jokes just fail to land.

The film takes on the big sci-fi hitters, such as Star Trek, Star Wars, Alien and 2001, parodying them all at various points. I feel like the film is aimed at a sci-fi audience rather than a general one, but the jokes just don't go deep enough for that purpose. The choir sound effect whenever someone mentions the "blue star" is the only time the film breaks the fourth wall, and again it just feels like a joke thrown in there because the more types of humour the film can cram in, the better (spoiler: it's not better). You can overlook the barebones production and effect because that's part of the old sci-fi experience, but that said, the practical models of the ships are fairly nice. As mentioned, the characters are all fairly unlikeable, even Thor, who provides Galaxina's love interest, and perhaps is meant to be the most "normal" of the crew, is devoid of any real personality other than being horny. Galaxina has some idea of what it wants to be, but the poor pacing makes it too easy for viewers to get lost. The humour and jokes constantly miss their landing, and an overreliance on crude humour ages the film poorly too. The film finds some footing eventually, but at that point, it's too late to redeem it, and it just doesn't achieve anything remarkable. There's much better sci-fi parodies out there, and this one should probably be left on the fringes of known space.

The Armenian armed forces and members of the 366

Soviet infantry regiment were waiting to gun them down. As a result of this massacre, 613 people were killed, and 487 were severely injured. The wounded who escaped the gunfire had to trek through the mountains to safety.

Many perished in the cold, and 1275 people were taken hostage. Those who survived would visit the mosque of Aghdam, used as a morgue to find the corpse of their lost relative.

The old man, a survivor of the massacre grasps onto a photograph of his missing son. Crying, he was asking the other families if they have seen him…
