i don't know if i could ever imagine a jshk everyone lives au because we've seen that it's not. viable? it doesn't work - something isn't quite right, or relationships that were formed because of the canon circumstances no longer exist or are as strong, some people even lack the character development the tragic events have given them. the picture perfect arc showed some of this, but the current arc even more so - aoi still has her hair up, she still hasn't opened up to anyone. yugi amane lived, but decades ago and he doesn't seem to be human anymore. nene can't be with hanako. kou and mitsuba. Because I was dead?

rather than a tragedy where things could've been prevented and everyone could've been happy together, this is a tragedy where no matter what you do - even changing the past - everyone being happy is never a possibility.

the rest of my thoughts have left me but yeah. tragedies are amazing

One of the greatest and most profound tragedies of Yellowjackets has and always will be Nat’s inability to free herself from the prison of that plane. She’s the one constantly returning to it, a sarcophagus holding the ghosts of her old world. She finds herself there in her nightmares, and in her final moments she recognizes that this plane has held her soul captive for 25 years. No matter what happened before the wilderness, within the wilderness, and after the wilderness- her essence was tethered to that sarcophagus where she so devotedly laid her friends to rest. It’s where she returns in her death, mocked by a ghost of her former self that she never left. And when she lays Ben to rest there, she feels the ghosts of this place pulling at her, taunting her. She rejects it, threatens it by claiming it can’t keep her there. But in the end, it’s not true. In the end, Natalie never was able to free herself from that place and everything that came with it. In the end she was fractured between two worlds and unable to make the peace between. So in the end, she returns to the souls she laid to rest there.

When I think about Gale and Mystra, I'm reminded of the Greek myth of the moon goddess who fell in love with a shepherd and asked Zeus to place him in an enchanted sleep, so that he would never change. So he would be beautiful and hers forever.

There are different versions of the myth, but this is the one I knew as a kid - and it always made me so fucking sad. And now I see why, because Selene loves Endymion - and her love takes his life from him. A god could not love Endymion as a mortal loves a mortal; she wants his presence to gaze on, to soak in, his body to hold. Perhaps he's a balm to her immortal existence; perhaps his beauty is an inspiration to her - but she does not want him, not all of him, not really. She doesn't want his sheep flock, the evenings where his fingers burn from the cold. She doesn't want his voice, or the lines and experience he'll gather as he ages. She doesn't want to live a life alongisde his.

Selene would say she loves Endymion, and perhaps, yes, Mystra would say she loved Gale. But how can a god love a mortal in a way that a mortal can recognise as love? You soak up his company, you laugh with him, you value his mind and his talent and his deftness with words. His presence is a spot of bright difference in your endless existence. But will you change with him? Will you be vulnerable with him? Will you look him in the eye, as an equal? Will you stroke his cat and put a blanket over his shoulder when he falls asleep reading, make soup for him when he's sick? Would you love him as a person, not a treasure? You can't.

Gale wanted to be loved with a devotion to match his own. Mystra wanted him to live in the enchanted sleep of being hers, something to smile at and hold but never, never to live beside. And she knew - she must have known - how unequal their desires were. She kept him anyway, until she didn't. Until he woke up.

A god's love ruins mortals.

I started reading House of Odysseus by Claire North again, which I had dropped a long time ago, since the characters where really annoying and the way it was written bothered me too much, maybe it's the adaptation's fault idk, but you really have to turn off your brain to make it even minimally enjoyable... that's not even true !Because they still find a way to make me hate everyone, there is a big ass problem if I find Antinous less annoying than Helen and she is one of the "protagonists"

I gave it the benefit of the doubt several times but it's really not my cup of tea 😭(I'm halfway through it though...). But I must say that since I'm very biased I wanted to try and draw Menelaus from the book, based on the awful descriptions, that are not even coherent since in the first chapter he is described in such a way that he looks like a Minecraft character with big ass hands and in 10 chapters later he is described having a thin neck, so I took on some creative liberties

We are not gonna talk about the blacksmith comment... And the whole paragraph beneath that is all about his hands and piercing gaze

What can I say... there are parts where I like him for how he is portrayed but it's like 10% of the time. He's loud, arrogant, mean, hot headed and he is trying too hard to get Penelope's favour, a red flag who walks on legs that are thick as logs...sigh I guessed that's fine...

But there are scenes that he is in that have a nice comedic effect especially when he is serious... I think that those are not meant to be funny so that's an other issue

as per my last post. the thing i really love about epic the musical and a lot of tragic stories in general is that almost all of the problems are reactionary, but in a way that makes sense for the human characters.

of course odysseus doesn't want to kill polyphemus. he just killed a baby that he didn't want to because zeus forced him to. obviously after that he isn't going to want any more unnecessary bloodshed. and of course he's gonna shout out his name and address, his best friend and multiple other men were just brutally murdered in front of him, he's not thinking straight and there's no way he could've known it was poseidon's son.

of course eurylochus opens the wind bag. iirc, odysseus in the music doesn't actually explicitly tell anyone what the bag is except for perimedes and elpenor (edit: after further inspection he does tell people other than those two, but it's not clear who exactly he tells). his captain is being weird and shady about this bag and not letting anyone else touch it, to the point where he stays awake for nine days straight to keep everyone else away from it. that's shady as fuck and after odysseus did nothing to quell his doubt, of course he's opening the bag.

of course odysseus sacrifices his men to scylla. it's been years now and he's so desperate to see his wife and son, especially since they could see the coast of ithaca when the wind bag was opened. this is the only true concrete way to get almost all of his men home that he can think of, of course he's going to start to grasp at any opportunity he can see to get home. and, he's just had his whole revelation about how he would do whatever it takes to get as many of his men home as he can.

of course eurylochus would stage a mutiny. his captain just sacrificed six men to a horrific sea monster.

of course eurylochus would kill the sacred cow. the men are starving, and they're not going to take odysseus at his word anymore because he just sacrificed six men.

of course odysseus chooses himself over his crew. they all just betrayed him and literally stabbed him in the back, and didn't listen to his warnings about killing the cow. everything he is doing has been to get back home, and eurylochus no longer believes they'll be able to make it home. he has to keep trying. he has to meet his son.
