Some spins on the "mostly male team with a token woman" trope:
The woman is trans and stayed in her old circle of bros even after transition
The woman is the only one in her circle of "girls" who didn't turn out to be a trans man
#of course even in that case i'd still make plenty of other characters female OUTSIDE the main team#there's a they wolf in my closet#gender#transgender#trans#lgbtq+#queer#story ideas#writing prompts

not now sweetie, mommy is watching how the massive girlbossification of female characters has led to the belief that weak and vulnerable female characters are badly written characters because apparently every woman needs to be outspoken and witty and snarky and brave in order to be considered “complex” and have any value in a piece of media!!

The thing is. We are starting to get to the point in this poll where I have to decide whether Voting For The Sapphic Couple I Like The Most is more important or Voting For The Sapphic Couple That Might Actually Stand Even The Slightest Chance Of Beating D/stiel is more important.
#like to be clear I don't think there's any way this ends in anything other than a bloodbath between a/crow and d/stiel in the final round#(either of whom might win) but. I can dream.#(though let it be said that I DO genuinely love g.o. and also that that ship isn't. actually a m/m ship because neither of these characters#canonically HAVE a gender in the way that humans experience said concept)#I just think it might be neat for a ship involving two women played by two women to win something. something that isn't limited only#to female characters even.#I am SO sorry to be so annoying about this unfortunately everyone's favorite Terrifying Redhead AnimeManga Lady won that one#co-ed poll and it gave me the TINIEST bit of hope which I will proceed to run into the ground over and over again forever#though I DO think there are a fair number of people who are tired of the women losing just about everything: because the Women Enjoyers#have shown up for each round in droves and there are SO many entries that I did NOT expect to make it this far

main take aways from Halloween (1978) rewatch:
michael myers is canonically 21??? this bitch should be at the club
*sees tiddies* ***MURDEROUS RAMPAGE NOISES***
that's it that's the movie
outside of the fact that everyone who has sex is murdered by the narrative, this is a surprisingly chill portrayal of female sexuality? these teen girls are horny and actively enjoying Getting It On with their boytoys. no pushy boyfriends sneaking in through their bedroom windows--these ladies are taking the initiative to sneak out and GET SOME. one of them gets laid and then immediately orders her boyfriend to get her a beer. (yes she gets Slashered soon afterward, but so does the boyfriend so honestly, gender equality.) yes the Final Girl is the only one not having sex, but she's not bullied for that, nor are her friends slut shamed except possibly by being murdered by the narrative
actually the only character who is shown being morally condemned on-screen is michael myers. specifically FOR his violent overreaction to other people's sex lives. (people he is spying on). metaphorically, the villain is American Puritanism sticking its judgy nose into other people's business.
aka Michael Myers Is A Republican
but actually the real villain is the doctor. guy's a judgemental, shaming, pathologizing asshole. and he's been in charge of michael's care since he was SIX YEARS OLD? kid never had a chance. i'd go on a killing spree too
also the parents. where are the parents? it's halloween night and all the teenage girls are home babysitting their younger siblings? come to think of it, michael's first victim was his own older sister, whom he killed while she was babysitting him. teen girls are really shouldering a labour burden here. maybe parentification is the true villain
side note: mike commits his first murder wearing a clown costume...which is never referenced again? his 'iconic' costume is a generic mask and wig and jumpsuit, when we coulda had a Killer Clown Michael Myers??? travesty
i like how the Final Girl and her friend casually smoke weed in her car. yeah she's an honor student and her friend is the sheriff's daughter. yeah they smoke weed. so what it's 1978
(to reiterate, mike is 21 and should be at the club. im not saying he shouldn't be rampaging, im saying it's sad that he broke out, tasted freedom for the first time in his life, and immediately snuck back into his childhood home to go rampaging. let's have a remake where he goes to a nightclub and has a few beers. maybe some slutty dancing. then rampage)
oh no he's hot

#HALLOWEEN#halloween the movie#michael myers#do you think he's a mike? mikey? to his friends? if slashers had friends?#i'll be honest i was expecting this movie to be way more of a bitch to its female characters#i mean yeah they died but so did some dudes#there's just a lack of cattiness compared to the way most later movies portrayed teenage girls idk#yeah the Final Girl is a Virgin and a Bookworm. but there's no bullying or any strong sense that's she's morally superior to everyone else#mostly she AND the other girls feel a bit sorry for her lack of a social life. one even tries to set her up with a date to the school dance#solidarity! trying to get your nerd friend laid!#overall it's just teenagers being teenagers and then a slasher comes in and ruins everything with his Lack Of Chill#like yeah dude sometimes teenagers have sex. get over it#also something to be said about how while the girl who survives is the one who isn't sexually active and dresses conservatively...#ultimately those things aren't ENOUGH to prevent her from being targeted#you could say that the other girls 'provoked' the villain (the same way women irl are so often accused of provoking their attackers)#but ultimately that doesn't keep the Final Girl safe. it just delays the inevitable.#because violent men never need excuses. no matter how eager society is to provide them.#ultimately she is at the mercy of the same violent whims because it was never her behavior that invited the violence.#gendered violence doesn't need an invitation.#also she doesn't save herself the doctor saves her#it's not her actions or choices that put her in danger OR save her from it--once again it is the whim of a man#no this wasn't intended to be a feminist movie it's just fun how you could argue it that way

Love seeing the new generation find out how, well, gay "Wicked" is.
Closeted high femme dressed as the lesbian flag not getting on her rebellious activist bestie's broom and regretting it for the rest of her conformist life.
#wicked#gelphie#tbf the books are much gayer bc everyone there is bi by default. some interpret book elphaba as intersex. her son is bi and has both a male#lover and a female one. elphie kisses glinda before they part and it's not clear whether or not they had sex when they slept together#in the same bed.#but anyway at least this film added some side gay characters swooning over fiyero <3#crope and tibbett my beloved side flamboyant gays that were removed from the musical. jail for musical! for that and for#the forced love triangle. book glinda never had a thing with fiyero--although tbf even in the musical that comes off as#somewhat performative on glinda's part bc she cares about her image and fiyero is the perfect guy for that

It's not about the ship.
A majority of us BKDKs never believed the ship would become canon. That was never really on the table.
What it is about, is 10 years of character and relationship development completely nuked for the establishment of a different relationship that had faded into the background at best for a lot of that time.
Izuku and Katsuki are important to one another. There's zero denying that. Katsuki died for Izuku. All of his scars come from protecting Izuku in one way or another. Katsuki was devastated when he learned of OFA's loss. He worked for eight years to make sure Izuku could live out his dream.
Izuku has looked up to Katsuki since they were children. He lost the plot multiple times when Katsuki was insulted or in trouble. Shigraki himself said Katsuki was closer to Izuku than anyone else.
And all of that development brought us zero discussions about what they've been through. No talk about the impact of Katsuki's death. No talk of Katsuki's apology. No talk about Izuku's feelings about the demise of his dream. Instead, we got Izuku rejecting the idea of being partners with Katsuki, something his character for the entirety of the series would have undoubtedly loved.
Yes, people can grow apart. But show me that. Give me background on why. Give me something, anything that would explain why the Izuku at the end of the epilogue is in diametric contrast to the Izuku we saw at the end of chapter 430.
These two characters mean so much to me. I don't see myself in their story, but the love (whether platonic or otherwise) and care that they show for each other speaks to me so deeply. Katsuki's growth as a person and Izuku's acceptance of and willingness to forgive Katsuki no matter what speaks to me so deeply, and to see that thrown away stings.
It's not about the ship. It was never really about the ship.
#bnha#bkdk#midoriya izuku#bakugou katsuki#my hero academia#mha finale#bnha spoilers#mha chapter 431#izuku midoriya#katsuki bakugou#and don’t even get me started on the lack of development for female characters in this manga#but that’s a rant for another time

#astro boy#tetsuwan atom#astro boy 2003#pluto anime#pluto manga#epsilon#art tag#I'm going to say something controversial. normally I would be all for gender-flipping characters in a mostly male cast-#-but I think making epsilon a woman in the 2003 anime was a major coward move.#like oh ok the character you choose to make female is the slightly cowardly pacifist defined by his nurturing heart and love of children#you dont say. how interesting#(not that 2003 epsilon even has those qualities besides the pacifism but its not like they replaced it with anything else compelling either#(as far as I know. I'm not done watching it but I only have like 8 eps left so I doubt they'll establish anything in that time)#(ok ok shut up leo)#thats not why I drew all that though I got the idea cuz they gave epsilon he pronouns again by accident in omega factor lmao#rock on gnc king

"Female characters aren't allowed to be feminine anymore! Why aren't girly girls allowed to kick ass while wearing makeup– oh the actresss are all wearing makeup? Well not enough of it! It's so subtle I barely noticed. And they are never allowed to wear skirts or dresses– ok well those scenes don't count there are some scenes where they DON'T wear dresses. Real girly girls never wear pants. And in fact now that I think about it it's sooo misogynistic that so many of these women in fantasy and action franchises fight. Women are worthy even if they don't display masculine traits like combat! Why- oh, I said I wanted girly girls to kick ass earlier? Well obviously I meant that METAPHORICALLY. Why can't they command armies instead and leave the fighting to the men? Actually now that I think about it that would mean they are the ones making the decisions while the men follow them... that's bad! Why do we only value women if they display talent in a masculine field like politics? And they always have to fix everything while the male love interests are useless. Women deserve to be taken care of! A GOOD female character would have a boyfriend or husband who solves all the major plot points for her! That gives her more time to do feminine things like dressing up prettily and doing her makeup and dancing 🥰"
#misogyny#gender#women#fantasy#media criticism#female characters#people will be like ugh female characters are so masculine nowadays and then their idea of a masculine woman is like... katniss everdeen#thinking about how 99% of fantasy heroines even the shallow faux-feminist 'i'm not like other girls i wear pants!' ones–#(that bullshit like this aaaalmost genuinely critisises before revealing that they think the flaw is not shallow writing but a lack of pink#– will still somehow end up in a beautiful ballgown that shows off their perfect skinny-but-curvy figures with 21st century makeup#because the franchise wants to have their cake and eat it too#fandom misogyny#feminism#women in fiction

the fandom @ a male character written to be an unlikeable villain: he's so babygirl, my pookie, he did nothing wrong, why can't i romance him
also the fandom @ a female/nb character written to be complex and assertive but overall sympathetic: she's a bitch and i hate her, she's so whiny and mean, wish i could kill her
#this isn't about any fandom in particular but an amalgamation of multiple ones#but what triggered it was seeing an opinion that da:tv flopped because its lgbt characters were written to be unlikeable#clearly meaning taash because they're the only one people blame the fall of the whole franchise on#there's a difference between you personally not liking a character and them being written to be unlikeable#especially when male characters are never held to such a high standard#and even the ones written to be unsympathetic villains still gather plenty of fans excusing their actions#this is by no means exclusive to dragon age it happens in every fandom#y'all are claiming to be feminists but clearly can't unlearn your internalized misogyny#and before you say that you disliking a female character isn't misogyny#you're right it isn't#but disliking them for traits/actions that you don't mind seeing in male characters is#and yes taash is nb but it's clear some of you see them through the lens of them being afab#and if they were a cis man you wouldn't have nearly as many issues with them being 'mean and blunt'

vague-posting about this here cuz i don't feel comfortable yapping about my su takes on twitter, but after everything that's happened the most interesting thing about the su fandom to me is that so many are 100% there for applying the "everyone can change and deserves a second chance" message to everyone, even the diamonds. except for one ☝️ she doesn't count. cuz she's dead.
#personal#very extremely delete later#ok cutting the vague post this is about a “whose the worst cartoon mom” twt post with pink diamond in the running#and a bunch of people pointing at her. the woman who died in childbirth and never got to meet her child. and she's literally next to#mother gothel. the baby kidnapper who kidnapped a baby#i'm always gonna be a pink diamond nuancepilled defender. she was a shitty entitled teen who grew up with a silver spoon in her mouth#then got self-radicalized and rebelled for both selfish AND selfless reasons#“this show is great because everyone makes mistakes and learns from them. except the pink one. she's bad and dead forever.”#anyways this is a crit towards the fandom not the show#“she had steven so she could selfishly escape her mistakes and put all her burdens on her child” or she wanted a child#“she abandoned her family” or she died during childbirth#“she started a war that got thousands of gems killed and mutilated” and if she hadn't nobody on earth would exist#the fact that some fans are more willing to jump to white diamond’s defense when talking about her reformation and redemption#white diamond—the architect and supreme ruler of a 10000+ year old fascist empire—has 10000% done worse more unforgivable things than pink#guys even blue diamond has shattered gems before. like not just kill them but permanently split their souls into pieces.#ruby called her a “SHATTERER.” she was INFAMOUS for murdering people. pink never shattered anyone#for fans of a show that explicitly says nobody's truly a villain you guys sure do want a villain really badly#anyways “we need more compelx female characters y'all couldn't even handle rose quartz” etc. etc. etc.

Thinking about marriage/women's rights on Vulcan Some may think that T'Pring not being allowed to divorce Spock was because he was going through the pon farr but if she were allowed to divorce him at all she probably would have done that a long time ago, confirmed by T'Pol when she's speaking with Koss, who isn't suffering from the pon farr. She says that he can choose another mate (without invoking a fight it seems: note the difference between a 'mate' and a 'challenger') and after he makes it clear that nothing she says will change his mind about marrying her, she finally threatens to declare a kal-if-fee. It's clear that Vulcan women cannot divorce/refuse to marry a man they've been betrothed to under any circumstances if A) He himself doesn't consent to ending their marriage or B) She doesn't have someone else waiting in the wings to be given to in his stead. Though, if the challenger she selects fails to win the fight, she'll have to marry her betrothed anyway unless (again) he decides he doesn't want her after the challenge. That seems like an incredibly unfair system, heavily biased towards men. SNW is an alternate universe in many obvious respects but most egregiously in that T'Pring has a lot of non-canonical agency over her relationship with Spock. It's interesting to me that Vulcan society has women in many positions of power and treats women as equal to men from what I've seen despite these laws. We don't really see Vulcans exhibiting a misogynistic attitude towards women in general but in TOS (perhaps because of its general writing style but it's still interesting to note) both Sarek and Spock take on patriarchal attitudes specifically regarding wives. Amanda says that 'of course' Sarek commands her because "he is a Vulcan and I am his wife." It's worthwhile in my eyes to note that she specifies 'wife' instead of attributing this attitude to women as a whole. Again, with TOS' writing style it wouldn't be out of place for her to say "he is a man and I am a woman." Spock, while in a pon farr induced irritation, states that it's "undignified for a woman to play servant to a man that isn't hers" - again implying that there's something specific about being a Wife in Vulcan society which is different from being a woman in general and demands subservience to a husband. This could perhaps stem from the extreme sense of ownership that Vulcan law has permitted men to have over women. A woman legally cannot point blank refuse marriage. There is no option which guarantees she won't have to marry her betrothed other than death. When T'Pau speaks of T'Pring she refers to her as being 'property' and Stonn, before being interrupted, states he's made 'the ancient claim' - we don't know what this is because he gets cut off but it's obvious they're both using the language of Vulcan law. Men are permitted true freedom to choose. If a woman wants to choose someone else to be with there is no option available to her other than the kal-if-fee which might result in the death of the one she wants to be with. And, if her lover fails, her husband can still just decide he wants to marry her and she'll be forced to. T'Pring gives two scenarios: One where Spock 'frees' her and one where he doesn't - it's still ultimately his decision which is clear when he ends the conversation with "Stonn, she is yours." This again isn't just because of the pon farr as T'Pol also goes through this. Koss can choose another mate and when the option is talked about there's no implication that this would result in any sort of fight (both by the casualness of its mention and by the fact that there's no formal word for it unlike the kal-if-fee.) Also, the fact that Koss does eventually grant T'Pol a divorce and it's all fine means that T'Pol isn't lawfully required to have another man waiting if her HUSBAND doesn't want her. It's ONLY required if SHE doesn't want her husband. Tradition must take precedence over individual desire UNLESS!!! You're a man. Then it's fine. Like, your parents might not be happy but legally you're golden.
#as a note do NOT read the comments on any T'Pol marriage clips on youtube they're full of 'haha women amiright' jokes about#how she's leading Trip on and being a bitch for not choosing him etc - if you become interested in female characters you learn#quickly just how much people still hate women displaying any amount of complexity/doing anything that isn't just falling into a man's arms#even if that hatred doesn't take the form of outright vitriol (aka: 'I feel so sad for Trip bc T'Pol's marrying some other guy')#Trip: T'Pol listen this arranged marriage stuff is no good - you've gotta be free! You have to do what YOU want to do!#T'Pol: -legally seen as property of her husband in the eyes of the law- ...............#<- not dunking on Trip it's just funny how easy it makes it seem - but!! He doesn't know all the facts#as evidenced by him saying T'Pol might 'call off the wedding' to her mother - T'Pol can't legally call off shit#It's also interesting how gender isn't really mentioned in any of the clips I've seen - it's very clear to me that T'Pol has no options#specifically because she's a WOMAN within her culture but that's almost like a quiet undercurrent and not focused on as a main#point of dissatisfaction - which I imagine it 1000% would be for Vulcan women when men have infinitely more freedom#Vulcan Man: I don't wanna marry this lady#Vulcan Law: Ok#Vulcan Woman: I don't wanna marry this guy#Vulcan Law: Noted. So - if you and your lover are willing to risk his life there's a chance (if he wins) that you can get out of marrying#him BUT if your husband kills your lover and still wants to marry you you DOOO have to marry him sorry you just gotta#<- this also makes it incredibly dangerous to in any way warn your legal husband that a kal-if-fee might be incoming#the element of surprise is a HUGE advantage when it comes to winning a fight to the death (which your lover can train for)#Vulcans#T'Pol#T'Pring#star trek#I don't think this is bad necessarily (as a fictional worldbuilding thing) but I wish it were explored more#It's especially interesting because it's an aspect of logical Vulcan society - it's clearly not logical but it's also clearly rooted deeply#in tradition which may mean Vulcan long ago used to have a much more extreme gender bias towards the male population#it just implies a lot that Vulcan has these old laws which are unfair towards women yet they still follow BUT women are treated as equal#citizens OUTSIDE of marriage! Maybe there was a feminist movement before? Is there another brewing? Where are the Vulcan feminists!
