Things that stood out to me on my third rewatch of S2 Ep1:

Jim is such a good foil for Aziraphale because he’s living so thoroughly in the moment, discovering and enjoying all the earthly pleasures like food and fine clothing, while Aziraphale is so distracted by his own schemes that he’s missing what Crowley is trying to tell him and he doesn’t even eat or drink.

The angels in heaven are so lost! They’ve been following the rules and terrified of questioning them that they don’t even know how to discuss something strange and unprecedented happening. (Jim’s intense pleasure at the hot chocolate suggests that if they were able to be open to new experiences, things might really change for the angels.)

Aziraphale and Crowley’s argument about what to do with Gabriel mirrors their ending argument so well. Aziraphale thinks they can and should help and Crowley thinks they should avoid any risk of association with their former sides. They bicker about it like they always have and Crowley leaves, but Aziraphale seems to fully expect Crowley will give in and come back. On my first watch I thought it was progress that Aziraphale said what he actually wanted: that he would like Crowley to do it with him. But now I find it so sad the way Aziraphale can begin to express what he wants but then totally ignores Crowley’s raw outburst about thinking they were doing things to be on our side. Poor demon is trying to tell you something, Angel!

And this is why the breakup surprised them and us so much: we’re used to this dance where they argue and split up for a short time but Crowley always comes around. But he hit a limit. Being told he should become an angel again is a line he will not cross. What’s interesting is he doesn’t actually leave after that argument. He waits. It was Aziraphale’s turn to come back.
