I'm not even the biggest Tim Drake fan, but that's not him. Y'all slapped Tim's name and parents (sometimes) on a random white boy (or a hyper feminine asian guy) and called it a day, he was never left alone at the Drake manor, his physical needs were always meet at his boarding school, he never had to make do with a can of pasta and a birthday candle, he never had to be homeless, he never went out at night on the rooftops of Gotham to take photos of Batman and Robin, Jason wasn't his Robin. His parents may be emotionally neglectful, but they never feed him food he was allergic to and made him go into anaphylactic shock. He's not a coffee addict, uwu bottom who had to do honeypot missions. Don't even get me started on how weird it is the increase of asian Tim headcanons/fancasts/face claims after he became canonically bi. (asian artists/creators not included)

2 • Cheater/Slut Dick Grayson

I'm all for characters being sexually liberated, but having the rroma character, which is a ethnicity not well perceived and sexualized to the nines, be the one who always cheats on his partners and can't keep his legs closed, who always just has to go do the undercover stripper or sex worker job, reducing his intelligence and personality just to have him act as a bimbo boytoy who's only personality traits is his butt and cocaine, like... 3 • Infantilized Cassandra Cain

Cass is a adult woman with a learning disability, not a five year old child, it's hard for people to even write Cass that much, but when they do it's so full of stereotypes that makes me gag, having her only use sign language is a small mercy from having her articulate words like a toddler and having the other characters coddle and act like she doesn't have the mental capacity to function in society when she's such a complex character, who, despite her lack of academic knowledge knows so much about people and compassion, it's lazy writing

4 • Caretaker Jason Todd

Kinda wild to have the guy who spent a good chunk of his life looking after his sick addict mother become the caretaker of a guy who's *checks notes* barely three years younger (Jason spent one year catatonic, so it's arguably) than him and just couldn't look after himself bc he *checks notes again* neglects his own body's needs bc he's a dumbass, like, oh but it's not little Timmy's fault, he has been born with glass bones and paper skin, every morning he breaks his legs and every afternoon he breaks his arms, every night he stays awake on his bed in agony, until his coffee induced heart attack puts him to sleep.

hello!!! i am the biggest Tim multishipper, i will ship that guy with anyone and everyone. but i have such a soft spot for DickTim and would LOVE to talk about them oh my god

there are so many angles you can use to look at DickTim, but the primary one is their relationship to the Robin mantle and how it influences their relationship to each other. Tim is the Robin that Dick chose and gave his mantle to. because while yes, Dick accepted Jason as Robin, Dick was *not* the one who gave Robin to Jason, that was Bruce. and Dick didn't fully approve of it, not as a slight to Jason but just being protective of his mantle. but Dick approved of and gave his mantle to Tim. and on Tim's side, when Tim came to Dick in the first place, it was to ask *Dick* to be Robin, not to be Robin initially. Tim is Robin because Dick refuses and guides him into that role.

with Dick and Tim in general, there's this repeated insistence on both sides that they know what's best for the other and will try to force the other into that role. Tim thought Dick being Robin was best for Dick (and Bruce) and tries to persuade Dick into that role. and later on, when Dick gives Robin to Damian, in the fandom it gets treated as some big asshole move, but in reality Dick does it because he sees Tim as his equal. he thinks Tim is ready to move on from Robin and doesn't want Tim to be his Robin when Dick is Batman because it would be insulting to Tim. and i'm not going to get into whether or not Dick handled that correctly bc that's a whole other post and that moment gets fanonized as it is, but the point is, Dick was doing what he thought was best for Tim. and the driving force of *any* of their conflict is never genuine malice, it's one of them trying to do what they think is best for the other and it causing disagreements. all of their conflict is born out of love and care for each other. when Dick doesn't believe Tim about Bruce being alive, it's not out of doubt of Tim's detective skills, it's out of love and concern for Tim's mental state. (bc historically, Tim has proven very poor at coping with grief) and i personally deeply enjoy ships that are a tad fucked up and dead dove, and the best way to dead dove DickTim is to make them *too* controlling of each other. they try too hard and go too far trying to "help" each other and that can make for some messy middle ground.

but even at their worst, they still make up. Tim and Dick still managed to get back on good ground after the whole Red Robin thing and Dick immediately trusted and believed Tim. their relationship is not a perfect one, but it's one born out of love and trust. neither of them handle being angry/distant with each other for long and they will always attempt to mend things. i'm rarely a New-52 fan but, i've always loved Tim's reaction during Grayson (2014) when he finds out Dick is alive. (Dick died but came back and has been forced by Bruce to continue faking his death bc he's undercover and all) of everyone, it's Jason and Tim who have the worst reaction to Dick being alive. it's an incredibly hurt betrayal. Tim loves Dick so much he can't fathom the idea of doing that to Dick, so he doesn't know why Dick could do that to him. it's one of my fave DickTim moments. the deep hurt and how long it takes to rebuild that trust. but still Tim immediately works with Dick and is willing to help him with a mission. no matter how angry he is, he will always let Dick in and be there when Dick needs him. it's so crunchy to me. they're not always *good* at making up in their low moments, but they will never stop trying.

furthermore, i know fanon has sort of latched onto "Jason was Tim's Robin/hero" which is certainly cute and fun as a concept, but Tim is canonically the biggest fanboy of Dick Grayson to exist. he loves Dick and he loves the mantle of Robin that Dick has created. i personally firmly believe Tim at some point had a childhood celebrity crush on Dick and i can't be convinced otherwise. Tim views Dick through the lense of Robin bc Tim is just massively Weird about the Robin mantle in such interesting ways. when Tim hallucinates Dick encouraging him during Batman (1940) #456, he hallucinates Dick as Robin, not Nightwing. there's such a pedestal that Tim puts Dick on in his mind, i think it's very easy to see that be a romantic attraction. during the Unternet arc of Red Robin (2009), when Tim is in the Unternet his Red Robin suit looks like a Nightwing suit. it's *very* clearly derivative, and that suit was created by his subconscious as how he sees himself. (as per how the Unternet works and all) so Tim's *idealized* version of Red Robin is built off of Nightwing's image.

more on Dick's side of things, when Dick kills Joker during Joker: Last Laugh #6, he does it because he thinks Joker killed Tim. and to be clear this isn't a heat of the moment thing. this is premeditated, multiple characters try to stop him from finding Joker because he fully plans to kill him, and does. (ofc Bruce gives him CPR and all) it's *Tim's* death that pushes Dick over the edge to compromise his morals, even when he knows killing Joker is just letting Joker win. he can't get over his anger over Tim's supposed death though. Dick is incredibly protective of Tim and I think that's fun to play with how far Dick is willing to go for Tim compared to everyone else.

a lot of characters in the Batfam are purposefully entangled, but Dick and Tim feel very fated in a specific way. Tim was there, when Dick's parents died. he saw it happen and from that moment on, his whole life's trajectory was changed in the direction of Dick. i would argue it's Dick that brought Tim into the fold, not Bruce. there's just so many countless moments of them looking up to each other, checking in on each other, helping each other out, etc, especially during the 90s/2000s. they work remarkably well as a united front against Bruce, for me. when they need to hide something from Bruce or just need someone on their side when Bruce is being Bruce, they always go to each other and trust each other far more than Bruce trusts either of them at times. i think a lot about their dynamic during Batman: Prodigal and how being Batman and Robin while Bruce was... off doing who knows what served as a bonding moment. no one else was really around, it was just Dick and Tim relying on each other and getting to know each other better.

of all of Tim's relationships in the Batfam, i would personally argue he's closest to Dick. so much love is already built into relationship, so turning it romantic is a natural and easy step. you can add a lot of conflict from their more unstable moments of attempting to make choices for the other or just have a very sweet and loving partnership because of their trust in each other. it's such a good ship to me.

He’s trying, he really is. Because the last thing he played before he died were Game Boys and then he awoken to Wii Games, Nintendo Switches and whatever the fuck those online games are.

Tim would join your streams every once in a while to play with you and he doesn’t mind any sort of games, he’s pretty good with the controller… well, maybe RPG. Because if he’s doing a multiplayer game like with Genshin needing to join servers and all, most of the time, people wouldn’t listen to his plans and end up dying and then he goes berserk. I'll be honest, i don't think there's much value to be found in 'rank-the-favorites' discussions. like the honest answer is 'it depends' and i just don't think it's productive. I do think that in most cases wrt relationships with bruce, dick is always going to come out on top. as i've said those two are just on a whole other level. they Know Each Other in a way that no one else will even come close to. I don't think it's controversial to posit that actually raising dick from childhood adds a layer to the relationship bruce has with him that really can't be replicated with anyone else. like...jason was with him for 2-3ish years as a tweenager, cass and tim were adopted in their mid teens. meanwhile bruce was effectively dick's parent from age 8 onwards.

I also think the timing is something that would be almost impossible to replicate. dick entered the picture very early into bruce's years as batman. bruce was the one solid thing in dick's life after his parents died. they were literally each other's crutches through all that emotional turmoil and became, for better or for worse, extremely codependent. all that to say, dick and bruce's relationship is just so crazy insane that pretty much nothing compares. he just has the advantage. you can't recreate the mind bogglingly deep connection 25 yo bruce had with 8yo dick grayson it just can't be done.

on the other hand, cass also has something with bruce that can't be replicated by anyone else: she is Exactly Fucking Like Him. she is his carbon copy. they Get each other's rock-solid convictions & moral code sooo deeply. fandom tends to use this as evidence to point towards cass being the favorite child, but like as greta mysterycitrus has eloquently said in the past, she is exactly like him (derogatory). bruce obviously loves cass deeply, that is his daughter, but I don't think having that relationship with her is always easy for him. her existence points out some uncomfortable truths about himself that he doesn't always want to confront. I mean... if you were to meet yourself as a seventeen year old it would probably be weird as FUCK lol. I especially think the fact that cass has killed someone really fucks with his head and forces him to reevaluate his own morals/worldview.

and like...I don't think he always treats cass fairly. we see it over and over again in bg 2000. he thinks he knows what's best for her because he sees himself in her, but the things he thinks are best for himself are Not Healthy to say the least. he intentionally keeps himself at a distance because he initially did not want that close, father-daughter relationship with her: it was strictly batman and batgirl. and he thought that's what she wanted/needed. but being so singlemindedly driven to a cause with no boundaries or normal life is not exactly the best way to go for a teenager. so I think those two had a lot to figure out when the dust settled.

I have much fewer thoughts about jason, tim and damian simply because they are not my blorbos like dick and cass are lmfao. i do think tim deserves a whole lot of credit for stepping in to save bruce and helping when bruce was at his lowest. like. that was obviously NOT easy lol. bruce and tim are interesting because bruce held himself back from being a father to tim for so long, when jack was still in the picture. but when it comes to a head and tim gets adopted, it's just...natural? like there was nothing else that could have happened there? I am honest to god not the biggest tim fan and have not read enough of his comics to talk intelligently on him any more than that lol. but I do know bruce loves him very very much and would be lost without him<3

jason....jason. I mean what is there to say lmfao. if your dead teenager turned up and started mass murdering what would you do. I think it's pretty obvious to say that losing jason was soul-crushing for bruce and permanently changed him as a person; we see those aftereffects in his relationships to people like tim, steph, and cass. jason will never stop being his son, and bruce will never stop loving him. but things will never be the same again. I don't think jason's actions post-resurrection will ever be justifiable or forgivable to bruce. like even if jason woke up one day like 'suddenly i'm cured of being a villain' I don't think he would be welcomed back with open arms or anything. jason is a murderer. he has killed like a fuckton of people in cold blood. that is something that will never be okay with bruce. grappling with loving your son versus your son being a murderer which is antithetical to everything you have spent decades building...that's rough buddy. is that controversial? idk i spend as little time as possible thinking about jason todd

I think it hurts bruce to look at damian sometimes because he just can't stop seeing talia. I think he loves damian deeply but it isn't always easy. that whole timing of final crisis was just so messy that they didn't get off to a super smooth start and had to do a lot of work rebuilding that relationship. I think damian has to reconcile his childhood hero worship of bruce with the actual very flawed man which isn't easy. it has been a LONG ass time since i've read damian's comics so that's about all I got.

Comic Reading Update!

Disclaimer: I'm reading everything so out of order, it's honestly a what catches my interest at the time approach, I've got an event timeline on my notes app so I can keep it all straight, but my tbr list is being tackled on vibes alone.

I have finally finished Knightfall! It took me 3 months to get through just Knightquest (I do not care for Azrael and honestly thought that part of the story was way longer than it needed to be), and a single day to read Knightsend & Prodigal (Prodigal was everything I want out of a Dickbats + Tim team up.)

A Lonely Place of Dying was a ton of fun! Tim is quite honestly adorable, and I love how suspicious the Titans all were of him. He really is Dick Grayson's biggest fan.

I think next up for me might be Contagion, it's not too long, so I should be able to get through it quickly and move on from there.

In slightly unrelated news, I finally found the "read it" button on leagueofcomicgeeks and have been trying to update that, I've passed the 300 read mark but I'm pretty sure I'm still missing some.

Tim Drake - A AU rant-thing

Greetings there Tumblr! This isn't something I usually do and I often get hesitant on sharing things with others... but this has been eating up my brain in a bit and I just need to get it out there. So I am really new to the DC universe, but I have always loved Robin. I remember going wild watching the Original Teen Titans and The Batman from 2004 on TV. And now that I know at least the basic ordeal of the 4 Robins, I can say that Tim is my favourite.

The last month I decided to check out what they were trying to do with him in Tim Drake: Robin and like most I didn't really liked it, but also saw that it HAD so much potential on trying to build a solid base for who Tim can be in this new universe.

I guess that's what most -if not all of us- Tim fans have been waiting and wanting to see: WHO is Tim Drake here? I get that today characters suffer a lot from being brought to a FLAT portrait like Jason being the "angry one" or Damian being the "spolied brat" one, wich we all know it's not the ONLY thing they are, SPECIALLY Jason -- and Tim is over and over being portraited as the "lost and insecure" of the bunch. And we know he IS that too, but that's not all there is to him. Reading Superboy - The man of tomorrow (Even as it being a bit... eh?) I thought: why not make Tim go through something big like this too? What I liked about the Tim Drake: Robin run is how he was set out in a entire different enviroment from other comics: He's not at the Mansion, not at his or his dad's appartment or some other random house. He's still in Gotham, but in a new separate part that seems mostly overlooked by others - including the vigilantes. And as for foes... The Chaos cult really needs to go, or at least suffer some huge overhall to be a REAL, SERIOUS threat to Tim. I mean c'mon, he is the guy that EXPLODED half of Ra's al Ghul bases, he can deal with a 16th century cult.

I know it's "hard" to built a decent threat to Tim if we take into account his hacking/fighting/detective skills, but not impossible. I keep looking back into that comic where Tim and Jason get stuck on that loop of their nightmares and the one thing I like about this comic is the two of them working together. I think that instead of focusing on making threats in form of real villains, would it not be possible to make them something else like in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish?

The way I see it, Puss had way to many lives and Tim... has way too many personas, leading to the point where he doesn't know WICH one makes up Tim Drake in the end, and THIS is what I consider to be his biggest threat.

I have this idea cooking in my brain: Thanks to some dimensional-travel shenanigans (Don't know exactly what could have happend here), Tim ends up in a dimension where almost everything is identical to his own, but: 1. Batman and Robin are nothing more than a discontinued series of comics and TV show; They were never real, living breathing heroes and this line came to a abrupt and bitter end when a tragedy happend on the TV set.

2. The only existing heroes here are the Supers (Superman / Supergirl and Superboy).

3. The Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson of this place still met eachother and currently run WE together. Also, Bruce is the owner of a museum dedicated to The Batman Series in honer of his father.

4. His parents are ALIVE. Still, that doesn't mean things are perfect - He lives with his mother who is now a history teacher in Gotham while his father lives on the other end of the country running Drake Industries all by himself.

The main thing I thought of this whole deal was for Tim to be put on a situation where he NEEDS to figure out who he is taking into account that:

- No Batman means no Robin. No Robin means he never had anyone to stalk throught the nights, and so, he could NEVER become Robin in the first place.

- His parents being alive, while still in VERY BAD TERMS, means he would no longer be a lonely only child. In fact, he would much rather do anything to get away from the galas and parties his mom would often drag him to.

In the other hand, I would like this "AU" to also focus on other characters like Bernard and that other girl that would often help Tim on some occasions - While Tim was gone, Bernard could very well try to fill his empty spot with his own hero persona, he did learn how to fight to protect himself, why not put this to use in a time of need? Also, I would really like to JASON be the one travelling to the other dimension to drag Tim back, but not as the Red Hood - No Batman and no Robin also means no Joker, wich means no death and no Red Hood - but just as Jason. Out of all the Batfamily, I think he is the one to mostly be able to talk through Tim and relate to him. I often think of that scene of Vee and Luz at the museum and I just think that it suits both:

They both know what it is like to be left behind and alone, still, THEY ARE NOT THE SAME, one of them never really had a choice.

ANYWAY, I have some small "points/scenes" on my head for this crazy idea and I could develop more about them later, I still have no idea if something in this line had been done already.

i super agree with red tim, ik it’s not uncommon to make him yellow and i think the color suits him just as well, but his Character Color is red to me. i would differentiate his and jason’s reds as slightly more orange for tim and slightly more purple for jason

Dick Grayson

Given Dicks job at the police department, it is incredibly likely that you two met on duty

He works close with the fire department, so when he meets you, he doesn't hesitate to reach out

Expect police versus fire department banter, comparing jobs and trading jokes on the other departments expense

"The yellow on your new suit washes your skin tone out"

"At least I don't stand around giving parking tickets."

Learning from each other constantly

Dick teaching you how to regulate your breathing while running and you teaching him how to combat blue fire

Your favorite days are the days when the police and fire department team up for a medical field day, training each other on things like CPR and learning from the other departments to improve teamwork

Basically its more of an opportunity for teasing

"Oh come on, Dickface, your CPR is pathetic"

"You're supposed to kick down the door, not tickle it."

Sometimes though, Dick gets assigned to do calls with the fire department so you get to spend a full day with him on duty

These are the days that are either incredibly fun or terrifying

Every firefighter has a pager on them that triggers an alarm if the firefighter hasn't moved in awhile so that others can find them

The second Dick hears the alarm his heart drops

Because he's a police officer he doesn't have the ability to investigate alarms, he just has to wait outside the building an prey you make it out alive

But being a firefighter means you can't be involved in his cases either

Lengthy shoot outs and hostage situations are tense calls you just have to sit by and listen to the radio

Every time Dick's voice comes through the radio system a spark of relief and anxiety washes through you

Insane hours

Like, insane hours

It get really difficult to balance everything since the calls for work are so random and last minute

It becomes normal to visit each other at work whenever you can

Random surprise visits with food to keep each other going or leaving notes on each others desks

You have given him donuts before...he still ate them

Coffee dates on call, cursing out pagers and late nights together

Dick understands the dangers of this job more than anyone else, he's still guilty of safety lectures but he trusts you as much as he can

Just being each others biggest support and motivators through tough calls and long days

Nothing beats finally coming home to Dick's arms safe and sound

Jason Todd

Firefighters tend to be an annoyance to Jason

The second he hears sirens he just sighs and leaves the scene so he doesn't get caught with legal bullshit or police reports

Unfortunately for him, vigilantes aren't fireproof, even more unfortunate, this specific vigilante isn't the biggest fan of bombs and fires

Gotham PD and it's fire department always work closely with the Bats, its a right of passage to be saved by a Bat or to save one

So when the infamous Red Hood gets trapped in a burning building, blind sighted by his own fears, it was fate that you were able to get close to him

Fighting side by side to find an exit

Offering him your spare rebreather because he's burning through his oxygen trying to contain his resolve

Protecting him with your fire resistant jacket as a fire bursts, him protecting you when he has better visibility through his helmet

When you two make it out you insist he gets checked for smoke inhalation and how could he say no to you?

Finding a secluded spot so you can check him for burns

Its the one time he doesn't mind getting caught in legal shit

Whenever anymore fires break out he gets a little curious, Jason keeps his distance but will tune into the radio and watch from afar

For some reason you keep running into the Red Hood after calls, he's always hidden and no one else seems to spot him

The more fond of you Jason gets, the more you two meet up after calls

He does get incredibly nervous whenever you're on duty, he'll be damned if someone else dies like he did

Curiosity turns into worry, he'll always be nearby when you're on duty to give him some semblance of control over the situation

Tough calls happen, all it takes is one call for Jason to meet you at a mom & pop shop to decompress

He likes to see you in his jacket and will always drape it over your shoulders and use you as an arm rest

When he first invites you over to the Manor he pretends to avoid the library

"Wouldn't want this 'firefighter' to burn my babies."

Always being each others spotting partner and encouragement to get through the set, sweaty kisses as a reward

Tim Drake

Red Robin works a lot with the GPD for detective work and cases, its not often at all that he interacts with the Fire Department

But when you enter the scene, he suddenly has an interest in learning all about fires and how to combat them

"It'll help for when I have bomb cases!"

He does hang around for a little bit after cases get resolved to make sure the police get all the correct details and the information they need to close the case so he starts doing the same with the Fire Department

Sometimes he'll help clean up after the scene while he chats with you, which means he's around for some pretty whacky last minute calls

He claims its the best way to be close to the crimes instead of hijacking police coms

It is entertaining to watch people ax open a concrete roof to vent a condo, he's probably standing next to you taking notes on why since you're the captain on call

It becomes routine for any late night calls to be accompanied by a bored Bat who just wants to learn more to protect his city

Slow nights and Tim swings by the station to check in on you since he was in the area, you eventually invite him to have breakfast since he must be hungry after such a long night

Your weird hours paired with his make for some creative compromises

Finding him knocked out in the station living room in his Red Robin uniform is always worthy of a photo

Showing him how to use the fire pole and his cape getting caught

He bought the station a coffee machine because he ends up near the station late at night anyway

Around the station you guys are heroes, but at home you two get to be yourselves

No capes, no fire jackets, or masks, just comfy sweaters and soft caresses

Your time off together is nothing but safe moments and security within each other

Wayne Enterprises does end up becoming a proud sponsor for your fire department, so all your equipment is as safe as possible

Damian Wayne

Damian never gives the GPD or Fire Department the time of day when he works cases, he's pretty short with the officers because he just wants to move on to the next call

He ends up meeting you through Dick's workplace

Department bonding days near the pier playing corn hole and barbecuing

Dick invited him to practice his social skills and hopefully make friends

Damian meets you and you tell him about all the pets you've had to rescue from trees, he sympathizes when you joke about the cat scratches on your uniform

Suddenly Damian starts asking Dick when the next bonding day is so he can see you again

It happens monthly so Damian gets roped into cooking for these things, and as captain, you get in on it too

Cooking together feels natural, Damian helping you put on pesky rubber gloves that don't want to cooperate, accidentally swiping sauce on his nose to watch him go cross eyed, and learning how to make vegan barbecue as Damian starts making the departments invest in Tofu

Just wait till you introduce Damian to the station dog

Walking Ace and the station dog together in the mornings

Eventually being his morning jog partner because he thinks getting a little fresh air every morning is important, plus running with the dogs is always a serotonin booster

He always runs on the part of the sidewalk that's closest to the road, frequently pausing for water breaks

Since the departments bonded with Dick Grayson's infamous little brother, Damian gets dragged into doing any fundraiser

He hates it, but he finds joy in doing it by your side

You eventually get to do a pet shelter fundraiser and Damian has never been so touched

You will never show him, but you have a photo of him petting a newly adopted dog with the softest smile you've ever seen

After a particularly tough call, he'll help you wash the soot and ash off your face with the same gentle hands that you use when you wash the blood out of his hair after a long patrol

I love the idea that Damian will always gift you a watch as the relationship gets more serious

On the outside its a chic, slim watch with beautiful engravings on it

But it functions as a pulse monitor and tracks your vitals so Damian doesn't have to worry so heavily, it would interfere with his line of work too much

He does toy with the idea of being able to sync up your watch to his so he can send you little vibrations whenever he touches his

I have read your thought about the Batfamily, now I really want to know your thought about the one who started it, the Batman himself. We can't ignore the fact that Bruce is abusing his children, but there's also some moments where he's being a good father to them. But some of his act doesn't make sense.

He's beating his children, then calling them his son after. He act like a mad man after Damian's death (yeah, they did Jason dirty in here), feeling sorrow and desperately wanting to ressurect him, but then neglecting him continously in the future. I didn't know much about Cass, Bruce seems to always be a good father to her. But her fans once pointed that Bruce (or DC) is too hard on her to not killing/too soft on the others, because the other batkids has killed some villains while under Batman and still got to continue putting on their costumes.

What is exactly Bruce character? How is his relationship with every one of his children?

I feel like Batman can't be in a good relationship with one of his children without destroying his relationship with the other. I always love parents and children relationship in comics, but with batfamily sometimes it just so 'fanon-y' and some are hurtful.

I stopped reading Batman book for a long time. And come back reading that wedding and city of bane arc, because I want to know how they killed Alfred. And honestly those run are terrible. The issue basically just a batcat fanservice, with the worst Batman and Catwoman characterization ever. The batkids didn't even got many appearance and treated awfully as if they are just extras, even if they all are capable and have connection with Alfred.

Hey there Anon!

My thoughts on Batman and Bruce have changed over the last few years, he wasn’t the character that introduced me to DC comics but what I got to read from him at the time seemed good. As time went by, I started to feel like the whole concept of Batman was overrated and he kinda tired me in entertainment such as movies and all that. He never truly was a character that I actually liked so by the time that I read Under the Red Hood I knew that I liked Dick and Jason better than Bruce.

Batman was interesting but I was completely indifferent about Bruce. That whole thing changed around the time that the New 52 was sort of ending, there I started to heavily dislike Bruce and then that turned into pure hate. Now, I am just tired of the guy and every time that he appears in Dick or Jason content my day is ruined.

I hate that DC has been writing Bruce as an abusive and manipulative person and father to his “kids”, he has done a lot of wrong to them in comic history but all went to shit (in current comics) when Bruce tried to manipulate Jason into reliving the day that he died and his resurrection in Batman and Robin vol2. #20 and when he beat Dick and manipulated him into becoming a spy after telling him that he had told everyone that he was dead in Nightwing vol.3 #30.

Bruce was a horrible human being in the pre-New 52 timeline too sometimes, mostly towards Dick but in a way, it felt like Dick was able time and time again to get away from him a little bit. Now none of his kids are given the opportunity to turn their backs on Bruce, they are kept in his surroundings no matter how abusive he becomes towards them.

My biggest problem with Bruce’s abusiveness is the fact that the writers never treat it like he acts in an abusive way, they never make him apologize or have an internal discussion where he realises that he was in the wrong. “Bruce is a horrible person to his sons but it doesn’t matter because he is right and he is Batman so that’s that”, that’s the message that I feel DC is selling us. Bruce never receives punishment or is called out for his behaviour, Dick was never able to tell Bruce that what he did to him was unforgivable, he never got the chance to explain to anyone that he didn’t play dead, and when he came back from Spyral he took all the shit from his “family” himself.

Sometimes DC does something even worse, they try to hide Bruce’s neglect with things that never happened like they did with the Ric thing in Dick’s case. Dick was passed around from villain to villain when he was most vulnerable and at the end of it all DC had the guts to say that Batman had been watching over Dick all the time. Like, why lie in such a blatant way? Does Bruce enjoy watching his son suffer from a far or was he too much of a coward to tell Dick that he was a shit father, got stuck in a hole and then decided to play “Cat and Bat” with Selina instead of caring for any of his children?

The situation with Damian’s death and resurrection was a whole thing that was meant to prove that Bruce loved Damian and considered him his son. But in their effort to make Bruce look like a good father to Damian they completely destroyed his relationship with his other kids and that was also the start of Bruce referring to Damian as his ONLY son. And like you said after Damian was resurrected Bruce ended up neglecting him afterwards which ultimately led Damian to run away.

His relationship with Cass and Duke is something that I cannot explore because I am not into those characters and they are involved in books that I am not interested in. So I cannot say anything about that.

With Tim it’s complicated because I feel like his relationship with him was never actually father/son it was more like mentor/mentee and that seemed to work better for them, ever since they started the whole family thing Bruce started to act a little bit too rough towards Tim and that ended with Bruce punching Tim during the “City of Bane” arc. Bruce never apologised or was shown realising his mistake, but DC made sure to explain that Bruce was going through a rough time so that’s why he did it. It was pure rubbish and I dislike it a lot.

I answered an ask a while ago about how I thought Dick and Jason could become family the way that DC treats the “Batfamily” within comics and I came up with the idea of the “Dickfamily” because I felt like DC made a big mistake the moment they revolved the Bat family around Bruce and not Dick. Bruce is a character that is known for being lonely and for being surrounded by darkness that he only manages to escape through the light of Robin (Dick Grayson because he was the first), he was always depicted as someone who is hard to work with and considers his teammates only co-workers and not friends. He is a difficult person to connect with, so why on earth did DC come up with a family surrounding that man? (I actually know the answer to that question and it is: money, DC did it to sell more comics under the Batman name but we are going to forget about that here, let me be petty).

Why would DC make it all about a man that doesn’t connect or goes out of his way to say that he “works alone” when Dick Grayson is standing right there? DC hates that they created a character like Dick because he is just better than Bruce at everything, he just is, he is better family to Alfred, Jason, Tim and Damian, he was even written as a better father to Damian than Bruce ever was!

Bruce is just not a people person or a person that forms strong bonds with people. And that makes the whole “Batfamily” concept suffer and come off as something forced that doesn’t actually work.

Tom King was one of the writers that tried to kill the concept of the “Batfamily” with Bruce and Selina becoming a couple and by continuously saying that Selina was who was the most important person in Bruce’s life and the one that made him a better person. All Tom King did with that is make fans and non-fans of the “Batfamily” feel rage. Like, I might not like the “Batfamily” but there is no way that Selina comes first to Alfred, Dick or Damian, there is just no way and if that were actually true then that’s boring.

All the writers that have pushed the “Batfamily” concept (try) do it in a way that makes it look grand and of actual essence but without putting any work on it, if you ask me the “Batfamily” (if there has to be one) should only include Bruce, Alfred (he do be dead though), Dick, Tim, Cass and Damian (I suppose Duke too, I don’t know much about him). The “Batfamily” has to be small because that way you can actually build relationships and make them matter. Having Kate, Steph, Jason and so many others involved in a concept that was made to fit around Bruce looks stupid! Bruce has had almost zero connection to Kate and Steph in the last ten years and Bruce’s “relationship” with Jason is a complete joke!

Bruce is just not the character that is meant to be surrounded by too much people, and he is not a good person towards his family so the whole ass concept should be thrown to the trash and finally let it die. But money is important and if there is something that DC will never stop doing, is milking Batman for content that can be (sometimes) pretty basic.

All in all, I think Bruce sucks and that his “kids” shouldn’t be dragged back to him ever again or at least for a long while. All of them would actually benefit from not being involved with anything relating to Batman. Dick could benefit from Bruce and other Bat-related characters staying away from him and letting him live his life in Bludhaven. And Jason? My sweet Chonky? He would be in such a better place if Bruce disappeared from his life, imagine the actually good books we would have if Jason was free to act the way he was meant to do as the Red Hood…

(We saw a little bit of that in the back up story of Detective Comics by Rosenberg, Batman is still involved but he and Jason are definitely not on the same side of the story! So excited for Task Force Z!)

How I feel about this character: dick is one of those characters i can easily talk myself into an emotional frenzy about. he was my first favorite character ever, and he’s a pretty good blueprint for who my favorites would be in other media in the years to come. i love dick and i love who bruce becomes when dick is introduced to the story; i love their dynamic as the dynamic duo. i love that dick and alfred hit it off almost immediately upon meeting. i love that dick never gives in to despair and that even with bruce as his mentor he never stops seeing the best in people. i love that he’s a quippy, flippy sidekick boy. i love his lil domino mask.

Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: i do think he and barbara gordon are just a really sweet couple. i especially like that barbara is a couple years older than dick is; idk, you just don’t see that often. dick is absolutely the kind of person who would want a girlfriend that is smarter and more badass than he is, and babs definitely fits that bill. again, girlboss/malewife supremacy.

My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: i mean it’s his father/son relationship with bruce, do i even have to say it at this point. a lot of times when i talk about what i love about dick i end up talking about bruce almost as much, because it was actually the dynamic between the two of them that really drew me in as a kid watching the animated series. again, i love who bruce becomes when dick enters the narrative; i love that he sees himself in this kid who’s lost his parents to Gotham’s underbelly, even though they have almost nothing else in common. i love that bruce’s reaction to seeing himself in this kid is to take him in, to make sure he doesn’t have to go through this alone, to give him something to do with his grief and his anger. i love how much they butt heads and challenge each other, and i also love that no matter how much they fight and how mad they make each other, and even after their big falling out when dick becomes nightwing, there is never ever a question that if one of them needed the other, the other would be there.

Favorite friendship for this character: his friendships with all the other batkids are all great, but i have a soft spot for his relationship with jason, which is why i’m so drawn to the idea of an au where bruce dies instead of jason, leaving dick and jason to have to navigate that together. their dynamic is similar to the one between dick and bruce in that they’re very different from one another, but jason is also different from bruce; jason is a rough-around-the-edges bad-boy type, and i think that creates an interesting tension between him and dick, but once the two of them begin to understand each other they really understand each other.

This thread twitter. com /snarkybatbrat /status /129796110968136499 isn't new but this is what we deserve. I hope dc sees the hate they're getting and does at least something to change their plans for him. The did for Tim. But of course, Tim is white and has fans on high places.

Hmm, I’m getting a this thread doesn’t exist notification even when I take out the spaces, but I’m guessing its to do with the Flamebird talk elsewhere on that person’s feed? Cool, cool. Honestly, anything and everything other than what they’re actually doing with Damian is what we deserve, lol. Like, the bar is too low. There is no bar in Ba-Sing-Se.

Sigh, to be perfectly honest, this and the other Big Two of my Big Three Schrodinger’s Plot Twists, like.....just have me more impatient than anything else. The three things I’m most antsy about seeing the resolution to - 

- not because I intend to like, give a fuck about their resolution and will almost certainly view it as unworthy of the trees they are printed on, may the ghosts of those trees haunt DC forever, like, I’m talking poltergeist dryads and Phantom Ents lumbering through the halls of DC while middle management flees shrieking before them - 

But like, there are three specific things I want to see hurry up and get resolved already, so I can know precisely what SPECIFIC resolution it is I’m ignoring as I proceed to headcanon “Okay but what if instead of [crap] it was this [actual quality] and if over here with [just the worst idea ever] it was actually [idea unsullied by proximity to King, Lobdell, Tynion, and the rest of the Legion of Ick] and also if only [DC NOOOOO] had instead been [DC YESSSSS] like, whew, what a world [where DC comics are things I want to read instead of just set on fire with my mind] instead of, y’know [a world where DC comics are things I want to just set on fire with my mind instead of read].

Anyway, my big three of the ‘mo are:

1) Literally Everything To Do With Damian Just Stop, Leave the Poor Kid Alone, Puberty Is Hard Enough Already

2) Bea. I don’t trust them with Bea, solicits do not make me any more keen to trust them with Bea, just. What are you going to do to Bea. I know you’re going to do something, DC, because you’re DC, you can’t just let a perfectly good character who has a perfectly good and even healthy relationship with the character who might FINALLY be getting back to a state where he’s in a perfectly good place to actually BENEFIT from such a relationship, like. Exist. Let alone reciprocate ‘lol like what would that even be like wow weird who even said that, quick, somebody fire them, I don’t like their vibe.’ I know you have some insidious plot in mind, SOME brainiac over there had to have said somewhere along the way “hey wouldn’t it be cool if now we like had BEA get amnesia and forget about Ric because SYMBOLISM” and because you don’t hire editors competent enough to yell THAT’S NOT WHAT SYMBOLISM IS, YOU COLOSSAL TWIT, NOW GO STAND IN THE CORNER AND THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU’VE DONE.....oh god, that’s it, isn’t it? That’s what’s going to happen to Bea, I bet. I said ‘quick imagine you’re DC, think like them, what would they do’ and I reached down to my asshole and pulled out the worst thing I could think of and I just fucking prophesied, didn’t I? Well fucking fantastic. Thanks a lot. Now I feel complicit.

But yeah, basically. Like. Bea is LITERALLY (one of the rare times I’m actually using that word right) the ONLY consistently good thing about this entire story arc, so of course someone was probably like mmmm, how can we ruin that though. So its not a matter of IF I’m gonna wanna smite them, its more I’m kinda just waiting til I know what specifically it is I wanna smite them FOR. Will it be they kill Bea, so brb, gotta smite them? Will it be they reveal Bea’s actually an agent of the Court all along, so brb, gotta smite them? Will it be that Bea pulls off her energy mask and reveals she’s actually, idk, Lady Shiva because why the fuck not at this point, as she cackles FOOL, IT WAS ME, THE WHOLE TIME and Dick’s like oh nooooo gross, you’re my sister’s mom, and then she pulls off another energy mask and goes HAHAHA, IMBECILE, ITS ME, PERPETUA, ITS A DOUBLE PLOT TWIST, and Dick’s like wait, who? And she’s like dude. Its me. Perpetua. Dark creator goddess of the whole multiverse? The entire past two years of the entire DC comics line has basically all been about me, me, me? Where have you been, living under a rock? And Dick’s like no, just with amnesia, and she’s like aww, nuts. I did not think this all the way through.

And then I smite them.

I mean, ultimately it makes very little difference I suppose, but I like to be specific about what it is I’m ignoring. It just feels more pointed, and pointed means stabby, and I’m all about stabbing DC at the moment, so. Pointed it is!

3) And finally, the resolution of the Ric Grayson arc all in all, or rather, just specifically in terms of “Will at least ONE person apologize to Dick and center HIM in his own storyline that he was the biggest victim of?” or will it be more like “Welcooooooooooome, to the start of our latest annual Dick Grayson Apology Tour, first stop, the siblings he just beat up while brainwashed and already feels absolutely terrible about having been used as a tool to inflict pain on while having absolutely no ability to do anything about it, what a dick that guy is, am I right?”

Again, not that it’ll make a ton of difference in the whole Ignoring On Account of All The Suck thing, but it does help inform what flavor of pettiness and peeves I sprinkle atop all my Hahaha You Guys Are Just The Worst posts from that point on.

*Shrugs* What can I say? I just hate going store bought if I can help it. Its that little individualized touch of spite that really gives a grudge some zest, y’know?

- sincerely a Jason todd stan who constantly gets panic attacks and stresses her mental state because people think making her fave a abusive psychopath that makes his brothers slit their wrists is a good way to get 50+ kudos .

I'm just so fucking tired of reading or seeing fanfics where anytime tim or dick are depressed and Jason finds out . He threatens them or beats the fuck out of them , like he ?? Would ?? Never ?? Do ?? That ?? . That's just very ooc even ( fuck that ESPECIALLY ) for Jason who pretty much struggles with abuse , and mental instability everyday .

He's also the one being constantly deemed his biggest failure and overall regret from his family ( Bruce especially ) . So there is NO WAY IN HELL , he'd beat the fuck out of one of his siblings for being SUICIDAL or DEPRESSED . ESPECIALLY , if he knows it , he won't fucking even instigate it .

Jason has been seen to be there for the people that he loves and being empathetic about other people's situations .

So it literally makes no sense to dehumanized and dumb him down to that level . Especially , when he GREW UP in a povertized household and area where that was a major constant . Jason has always wanted it be better than where he came from and when authors do that for the sake of their stories is just uGH.

Some people don't realize how much Jason todd does for so many people ( me a prime example ) . A independent rich character who came from the harder side of the city , a street rat growing up in a single parent household , needing to step up and not being able to be a kid . Having a mentally incapable and inconsistent father . Only to be brought up to a better place and just when he fully fucking embraces his new home for it TO BE RIPPED AWAY FROM HIM . For him to come back and just be angry , but also being able to fight through his inner demons and TRY to be apart of his family — fuck . Him not even able to AFFORD to even give ATTENTION TO HIS THOUGHTS , or when someone notices its just BRUSHED TO THE SIDE .

( for anyone who is wondering [ which I doubt ] , alot of what I mentioned about Jason I FELT because I also come from a single parent household from the shittier part of my city etc .)

Jason Todd is a character that many people can relate to a higher point than most conic book characters . He opens a gateway for kids similar to him to fall in love with the comic book world . So it's just even MORE frustrating when people CONTRADICT and pretty much ERASE years of character build up . Just for their fic to have someone BEAT THE FUCK out their favorite character , for ANGST .

So please fellow batfamily authors , STOP DEHUMANIZING AND MISCHARACTERIZING Jason todd for your 17k + FANFICS . There are so many different plots you can take for dick grayson and timothy drake whump fanfictions without ruining other characters :") .

I will also like to apologize if any dick Grayson or tim drake fans got offended . Your fav is in no way getting bashed here . They are ALSO very RICH in character and deserve not be De characterized as well . This is just a well needed rant ABOUT some of their fanfictions and how authors would use Jason as a way to enhance them . HAVE A GREAT DAY .
