When I first watched the scene in the donghua season two where Jun Wu was warning Xie Lian of eming—Hua Cheng’s cursed and evil scimitar, “a wretched blade”, something that, if touched, would have “unimaginable consequences”—a blade that no one but the emperor could survive a blow from and that every other official was terrified of—I was confused why Xie Lian gets wounded and then like…doesn’t even flinch. He treated it like a mere sprained ankle or maybe even a damn paper cut.

At the time, I hadn’t read the books yet, so I had no idea that the cursed shackles made it literally impossible for him to die and I obv had no idea the real extent of his pain tolerance. I thought maybe eming just wasn’t as scary or deadly as the rumors made him seem, especially having just seen him in puppy mode a few episodes back haha.

So every time I rewatch the donghua after now knowing the entire story, it’s both funny and devastating. I really saw eming through Xie Lian’s eyes only for a bit lol, but…eming truly is deadly. To think of what could have happened had he not had that shackle…no one knows better than Hua Cheng. Plus—regardless that he couldn’t die, something that powerful had to have hurt (Xie Lian and Hua Cheng) like hell.

another reason i think that xie lian felt an instant connection on the ox cart is because he and hua cheng both grew up in xianle.

there are maybe 4 people still alive that grew up in that culture. based on my own experience, you can pick up on things like accent, cadence, references, and humor that suggest a person is from the same place as you without consciously noticing it. that sense of comfort and similarity probably played into their instant chemistry.

Like I'm not going to lie, He Xuan played a good game, but he definitely developed a massive Shi Qingxuan shaped weakness.

To the point he just compeltely bombed his revenge plot. Honestly, he spent the whole time dedicated to the fact that there's no third option either chop off his head or have a fate worse than death, then ripped Shi Wudu's head clean off. That's a third way He Xuan! You cannot convince me that was not an act born out of love. It's toxic, but I like it.

I've seen people call animal Xie Lian weasel, stoat or ferret and depict him as bigger or smaller animal with or without black-tipped tail. And I'm not sure which animal he's supposed to be, but there are certain differences between these three kinds, and it feels like sometimes people are mixing them up. So I thought I'd create charts focusing on most obvious differences - size and fur colour.

But first something important. English is not my first language and I've just learnt that 'weasel' can be used as a common term for stoats, ferret and... well, weasels. The last one are also called "least weasels" and that's what we'll use.

Without further ado, let's go!

IN CONCLUSION:

If it has white fur and a black-tipped tail - it's a stoat.

Least weasels and stoats are significantly smaller than ferrets.

"Weasel" is a common term for stoats, ferrets and weasels/least weasels (in UK).

This is not some vital knowledge, just thought it would be cool info to share. However people draw him, each weasel Xie Lian is beautiful and important <3

P.S.: Now I'm curious - where did animal forms for hualian even come from? Was it a fan's idea? Is it something from MXTX?
