wip wednesday! this time bc today’s mood has been angst everywhere plus i read another great post epilogue fic, i’ll be presenting a snippet from my orv post epilogue fic. its more a tiny collection of bullet points and conversation snippets but the one i have penned down for heewon and dokja is my favorite
anyways, beware of spoilers and of pain :D
“Joonghyuk and Souyoung told us after we first tried to get you back from the train- that the fourth wall said you scattered your soul because you knew we would try to save you. Is it true?”
Dokja knows he spends far too long staring at Heewon, trying to understand. The words echo around inside his skull, sharp and taunting. Joonghyuk and Sooyoung had told her- they also believed that he- and he-
He can barely remember anymore. It’s such a hazy thing, his time on the train. The pain is a vivid memory, as is the loss that permeated his skin knowing he would spend the rest of his life atoning, far out of their reach. He would like to reassure Heewon that it isn’t true, that he had never thought of abandoning them. With his mind the way it is though, it would be a lie. He doesn’t want to lie to them anymore.
“Right-” Heewon laughs again, somehow more bitter than the first. “Right. Maybe you’ve always been like this.”
“Heewon-ssi…” Dokja says, at a loss. A long time ago, he was told that even if a wall existed between people, it was important to write something, anything, even if it isn’t heard, even if it isn’t understood. He doesn’t know what to do with a wall completely of his own making, stone by stone piled on by his decisions. Maybe it’s better this way. Even with the sacrifices he knows his mother made for him, he can’t help but have a part of him that despises her for it.
If that’s what he has become to Jung Heewon, then perhaps this too, is for him to bear.
Dokja stays quiet. What is there to say, in the face of her righteous anger? As Judge of the Apocalypse, nothing had ever escaped her wrath. He doesn't deserve to be the first.
Heewon stares at him, expectant even though Dokja hasn't a clue what she's waiting for. Tears silently drip down her face, hands locked into trembling fists, and without either of them saying another word, she turns on her heel and walks out.
The room is empty after she leaves. He wonders if the sound of train tracks is imagined or a vestige of his dreams coming to pull him back.
Heewon's words echo in his head, louder than anything. Joonghyuk and Sooyoung had told her. Joonghyuk and Sooyoung thought the same. Did everyone? Were they keeping quiet about their fury for the sake of his recovery? He wishes they wouldn't.
Something in him aches at the thought. How does he tell them that they're the best thing he's ever had, and thanks to that he'll be the worst thing to happen to them. After all, he can’t give them any more than who he already is.

a lot of people either forget or straight up don't know that, before the 90s, fidelity in translating a movie for local markets was very much up to the distribution company and translators in that specific country. Dubs in particular varied tremendously in quality, especially if it was being done in a country where very few people spoke English. In pre- fall off the Iron Curtain Hungary in particular, so long as the original movie and the dub didn't go against the Soviet dictatorship at the time, it was pretty much a choose your own adventure affair. Sometimes this improved the movie! Other times, questionable choices were made.
When I was a kid, they used to play older imported movies on tv a lot, and since I was bored while at my grandparents' house with nothing better to do, I watched a lot of questionably translated movies and never really looked into them. So imagine my surprise, years later, when I go to my auteur cinema class, and I learn that Goncharov is not, in fact, about a man looking for his wife's shoes.

I CANNOT get over the parallels between (Broadway) Anastasia and Goncharov. I know one is a mafia flick and the other is a butchered rendition of a historically inaccurate cartoon, but both have strong themes of loss, yearning, and identity. (and don't even get me started on the finale confrontation scenes between the male and female leads)

Perhaps all they need is time...
Tumblr media
Russian translation:
"Nice shot soldier"
"Now eliminate the second target"
"Why didn't you shoot soldier?"
"Speak up!"
"Take him back and teach him that we don't tolerate failure" (we don't fail)
"The reset it"
