Timeline: Batman

This is my best attempt at a post-crisis timeline based on age-- specifically Bruce’s age every time he adopted and/or met one of his children.

I’ll be citing my work by issue and panel. This isn’t my most organized work, and I don’t know how well tumblr will let me translate it, so I do recommend the google doc. I imagine the image quality here won’t be great.

Notes:

This is a post-crisis timeline (1986-2011). I’ll be referencing a few pre-crisis panels, but I won’t be touching the New 52 or anything after it. That’s a different game of ball with its own, extremely bad, timeline.

Crisis on Infinite Earths is a 1985-1986 series that rebooted the DC timeline and altered some backstories, including Jason’s. Pre-crisis, his backstory was almost identical to Dick’s. Post-crisis, he changed to the “steal the wheels off the Batmobile” origin. Anything written before 1986 is a weak source for my purposes.

My original question centered around Bruce’s age through the process of meeting and acquiring his children. In this timeline, those children are (1) Dick Grayson, (2) Jason Todd, (3) Cassandra Cain, (4) Tim Drake, and (5) Damian Wayne. I was envisioning an interview where the kids explain their family timeline to outsiders. I did not anticipate the project taking this long.

We’re talking about 72 years of content here, which means decades of contradiction, conflation, and rewrites. I’m pretty satisfied with my work product, but please understand that there are no perfect answers. I’m going to cite my sources, and I’ll do my best to explain why I chose those sources specifically, but it’s pretty likely that for every panel I pull, there will be others with different numbers. We’re all going to have to live with that.

Bruce’s parents die

Pretty consistently, Bruce is written as eight years old the night his parents died.

Detective Comics #0 (1994)

This is a zero issue where Bruce thinks back on his origin story. It was written long after Crisis on Infinite Earths (1986), and I tend to give a lot of weight to ages written in summaries of past plot lines, my reasoning being that it’s easier to be consistent in one issue than it is to be consistent through a month to month story.

Bruce first appeared as an adult in Detective Comics #27 (1939), and the Waynes were already dead at that point, so flashbacks are the only available material anyway.

I’ll take a second here to note that I did find at least one alternate age for Bruce— in Superman/Batman Secret Files & Origins (2003), Bruce was 10 when his parents died. I’m disregarding that in favor of the stronger 8 year old timeline, especially in light of Batman #404 (1987).

Batman #404 is the beginning of Batman: Year One, which was explicitly written to clarify the Batman timeline post-crisis, and it’s the basis of most of my calculations for Bruce and Dick’s ages.

Bruce becomes Batman

According to Year One, Bruce was 26 years old when he became Batman. I’m using his age at his parents’ deaths, his age when he returned to Gotham, and his 18 year timeline.

Batman #404 puts Bruce at age 25 when he returned to Gotham in January.

Bruce gives his dramatic, “Yes, Father, I will become a bat,” line in March. In the same scene, he says that it has been 18 years since his parents’ deaths. Knowing that they died when Bruce was eight, that puts Bruce at 26 years old the day he became Batman, which makes sense considering Bruce’s birthday is usually set at February 19th.

He was 25 in January, turned 26 in February, and became Batman at 26, 18 years after his parents’ death.

Post-crisis, DC built timelines off the “Year” model. Year One is Batman’s beginning, and events after that are measured by how far away they are from the year Bruce became Batman. I’ll be using the Year model for Dick’s life events next.

Dick’s parents die

The Graysons died in Year Two. Using the Year Model, Dick was 12 when his parents died, and Bruce was 37.

Year timelines appear a fair amount, especially in issues titled “Secret Files & Origins.” I pulled this bit from Batman Secret Files & Origins (1997) because it was the easiest to screenshot.

Year Two would place Bruce at 27 years old. I’m calculating Dick’s age backwards, based on him being 13 years old during Year Three.

Dick becomes Robin

Dick became Robin in Year Three, when he was 13 years old and Bruce was 28. I’m using two different issues to calculate the number.

Batman #441 (1989)

Batman #441 is from Tim’s introduction story. It takes place “months” after Jason’s death. We’ll get to that part. In Batman #441, Tim asked Dick to be Robin again in order to help Bruce, who was visibly unstable after Jason’s death. Dick says that he can’t go back to being Robin, just like he can’t go back to being 13 years old. The strong implication there is that Dick became Robin at 13, which corresponds to Dick’s statements in Batman #416 (1988).

In Batman #416, Dick as Nightwing returns to confront Bruce about Jason becoming Robin. He says that he was Robin for six years, and he stopped being Robin at 19.

If Dick stopped being Robin at 19, after 6 years, that would put him at 13 when he debuted as Robin, the same number from Batman #441 (1989).

Dick was 13 during Year Three, so 12 during Year Two, the year his parents died. Those numbers answer the first bit of my original question. I wanted to know how old Dick and Bruce were when Dick became his child. It’s a bit more of a complicated question for Dick, since he was originally Bruce’s ward, then adopted as an adult.

Based on the timeline so far, Dick became Bruce’s ward at 12 years old, while Bruce was 27.

Jason becomes Robin and is adopted

As previously discussed (see Notes), Jason’s timeline is complicated by Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985-1986). Pre-crisis, Jason first appeared in Batman #336 (1983) as a former circus acrobat very similar to Dick.

Jason’s origin story reboots at Batman #408 (1987), which describes the switch-off between Dick and Jason. I’m building a lot of my timeline off of that issue. At the beginning, Dick gets shot by the Joker, and as Bruce carries him away, the media ask if Robin is dead. Dick isn’t dead, but back at the manor, Bruce decides to retire Robin as a role, based on the idea that crimefighting is too dangerous for a child.

This version is more or less from Bruce’s point of view, but there’s a contrasting version from Dick’s point of view later, in Batman #416 (1987). That one has a significantly different tone, and I already cited it once (page 13) because Dick talks about his age and the amount of time he was Robin.

The second part of the issue takes place “weeks” later. Bruce goes to Crime Alley to mourn his parents on the anniversary of their death. He comes back to find that somebody stole the wheels off the Batmobile. The somebody was Jason, and by the end of Batman #409 (1987), Bruce is calling Jason “Robin.”

Batman #408 (1987) seems to divide Dick’s departure and Jason’s introduction by only “weeks,” in the post-crisis reboot. Dick’s version of the story in Batman #416 (1987) is much less charitable to Bruce— instead of ending on a panel of Bruce smiling, it shows the aftermath of Dick in tears as Bruce walks away. Dick goes on to describe leaving the house, going to college for a semester, then dropping out. According to Dick, Bruce didn’t even say goodbye.

I don’t think the stories are contradictory; they’re just different experiences of the same events, separated by only eight issues. Dick tells us that he was 19 when he left Wayne Manor, and Bruce chooses his new Robin “weeks” later.

As a summary, we know that Bruce’s parents died when he was eight, and that 18 years passed before he became Batman at 26. One year later, Dick’s parents died while Bruce was 27. One year after that, Dick became Robin at the age of 13. From those facts, Bruce is 15 years older than Dick.

All of my calculations of Bruce’s age are based off of the age gap between him and Dick. Dick was 19 when Jason became Robin, so we know that at that time, Bruce was 34. We also know that at that time, Jason was 12.

I can’t show a source for that number because it appears on the letter page of Batman #408 (1987), Jason’s introduction.

Even after a significant amount of investigation, I can’t find a copy of the letter page, but it’s cited by enough secondary sources for me to be comfortable using it. That issue is specifically written to show Jason’s origin, so it makes sense that it would contain Jason’s age at inception, even if the number wasn’t in the actual exposition.

From Jason being 12, we can establish a seven-year age gap between Jason and Dick, who was 19 at the time. Now we know Bruce, Dick, and Jason’s ages, and the age differences between them.

Back to my original question— when did Bruce acquire Jason? We know that Bruce was 34 when Jason became his ward, and Jason was 12. The next question, however, is when did Bruce adopt Jason? On this one, I’m making an educated guess.

Again we have to differentiate between pre-crisis and post-crisis timelines. Pre-crisis, there’s a full storyline about the fact that Bruce did not adopt Jason, although not for lack of trying. In Batman #374 (1984), the Child Welfare Bureau investigates Bruce when it notices that Bruce has not adopted Jason— and is not even, in fact, his legal guardian.

The rest of the storyline is about Jason’s custody. A villain named Natalia Knight (Nocturna) adopts Jason in an attempt to get Bruce to marry her in order to become Jason’s father. In the court scene in Batman #377 (1984), Bruce says that he filed to adopt Jason sometime beforehand, although it’s unclear to me whether he means he filed between those issues or the CWB documents were incomplete.

Natalia does adopt Jason in Batman #378 (1984), and he briefly lives with her before returning to Wayne Manor in Batman #381 (1985), directly before the reboot.

I’m including all of that for two reasons: first, I do think it’s important to clarify both this version and the post-crisis version I’m about to address. Second, I spent years under the impression that Bruce adopted Jason pre-crisis because of one, well-known scene.

Donna Troy gets married in Tales of the Teen Titans #50 (1985). At the wedding, Bruce and Dick have a conversation about Jason and about their own relationship. A few of those panels get spread around because they contain what I would consider a defining moment between Dick and Bruce.

I’m certainly not complaining about the amount of times I’ve seen the wedding conversation, but I think that, in regards to Jason, seeing just those panels has created a misconception.

Tales of the Teen Titans #50 (1985)

Without context, it looks, at least to me, like Dick is saying that Bruce has adopted Jason pre-crisis, which isn’t true. This issue takes place between the Natalia adoption in Batman #378 (1984) and Jason’s return to the manor in Batman #381 (1985), and the panels directly before the exchange make that clear. I just didn’t see those panels until I looked through the whole issue for this project.

I’m reasonably certain that in the past, I publicly cited this issue as evidence of Jason’s adoption, and I was wrong about that. [Note: As it turns out, I was only partially wrong. See section Correction.]

Tales of the Teen Titans #50 (1985)

As we see, the wedding conversation is in the context of the Natalia adoption. With that cleared up, and with the pre-crisis timeline filled out, let’s move to post-crisis.

In my brief read-through of Batman #404-427 (1987-1988), I didn’t find any direct references to Jason’s status. Those issues begin at the reboot and end at Jason’s death. However, Dick and Jason’s statements after the fact do tell us that post-crisis, Bruce did adopt Jason.

In Batman #436 (1989), Dick returns to the manor in the direct aftermath of Jason’s death, and while he is there, he sees that Bruce removed any trace of Jason from the house. There aren’t any trophies in the Batcave, and there aren’t any pictures of Jason on the nightstand displaying Bruce’s family photos.

Dick says that Jason was Bruce’s son.

I think it’s fair to ask whether Dick is being literal here, because even if Bruce hadn’t legally adopted Jason, it would still be more than appropriate to call them father and son. I’m not going to place my opinion solely on this kind of statement, even if it does appear pretty regularly from 1988 to the end of the timeline.

Green Arrow/Black Canary #4 (2007)

We get a more definite answer later, during Tim’s first appearance. In Tim’s origin story, he deduces Batman and Robin’s secret identities after he sees footage of Robin doing a type of flip that only the Flying Graysons could do. Tim was at the circus the night Dick’s parents died, so he saw Dick do the flip there, then saw Dick become an orphan.

Because Tim knew that Dick was the first Robin, he correctly identified Bruce as Batman and Jason as the second Robin. He tells Dick all of this in Batman #441 (1989).

Tim does specifically use the word “adopts” here, and that’s good enough for me. The last part is guesswork— I don’t know for certain how old Jason and Bruce were when the adoption took place, but I’m electing to say Jason was 12, the same age as he was when he became Robin.

I picked that number both out of convenience and because Tim seems to be putting Jason’s adoption and the second Robin’s appearance at around the same time. With that in mind, I think that Jason was 12 years old both when he became Robin and when Bruce adopted him. Using the age gap we already established, that would put Bruce at age 34.

Circling back to my original question, Dick became Bruce’s ward when Dick was 12 and Bruce was 27. Jason became Bruce’s ward, then adoptive son when Jason was 12 and Bruce was 34.

At this point in the timeline, Bruce is 34 with one former ward and one adopted son.

Correction

A few days after I wrote my section about Jason’s appearance and adoption, I realized that I was missing a panel citation in my discussion of Jason’s death. The panel is from New Titan #55 (1989), and you’ll see me cite it when I talk about Jason’s death certificate.

New Titans #55 (1989) is the issue where Dick, who is with the Teen Titans, finds out about Jason’s death. While I was combing through the issue for the panels I wanted, I reread a scene I had completely forgotten about. Dick goes back to the manor to speak to Bruce, and it doesn’t go well.

I have three comments here. First, I do think this scene is inconsistent with the simultaneous story in the Batman title. In this version, Dick and Bruce have a very aggressive confrontation, but in Batman #436 (1989), Dick appears to be returning to the manor for the first time since Jason died, and there isn’t any reference to a prior fight.

Putting that aside, Bruce does explicitly say that he adopted Jason, and that’s more, stronger verification of a post-crisis adoption. Lastly, it’s pretty clear that Bruce and Dick are talking about the wedding scene.

I already explained that the wedding scene is pre-crisis, and in the original text, that conversation is about Bruce wanting to, but not being able to, adopt Jason. New Titans #55 (1989) carries the wedding scene into post-crisis canon, changing the language in the process. In this version, Bruce has adopted Jason.

I was still wrong about the wedding scene because in the past, I used it as evidence of a pre-crisis adoption. It isn’t pre-crisis evidence, but it is, in a roundabout way, evidence of the post-crisis adoption. I wanted to clear that up before I move on to Jason’s death.

Jason dies

Jason’s death is by far the shakiest point on my timeline, but I’ve chosen to put him at 15 the day he died in Batman #427 (1988).

I think it’s safe to say that Jason was either 14 or 15 when he died, and my basic conclusion is that running numbers doesn’t give me a definite answer. There’s a cop-out option based on an extraordinarily poor source, and I’m taking the cop-out.

The general consensus seems to be that Jason was 15 at his death, citation to Jason’s death certificate. Jason’s death certificate appears in two different places, and I think most folks conflate the two.

To my knowledge, the only copy of Jason’s death certificate in full appears in The Batman Files (2011), where it does list Jason’s age as 15.

Now there is a partial copy in Batman Annual #25 (2006), which I would argue is a very reliable reference when it comes to Jason. That issue is part of the Under the Red Hood story, the one where Jason returns to Gotham for the first time after his resurrection. In fact, the specific annual issue has a timeline for Jason’s events counting forward from his death.

Here’s the problem: the issue doesn’t say his age at death. The partial copy of his death certificate looks like this.

I think that when most folks remember a death certificate, they think of this one, the one from a very important issue, instead of The Batman Files (2011) which, as noted, is a very bad source.

I have three issues with The Batman Files (2011): the format, the publishing date, and the other information on the certificate. First, The Batman Files (2011) isn’t a comic book at all. It’s a commemorative book published in collaboration with DC in 2011. Now I don’t think that fact completely removes the book as a source, but it certainly damages its value as one.

My problem with that date, 2011, is that it’s the year the New 52 premiered. I called it a commemorative book because it’s meant to be a look back at a fully complete timeline, a kind of “this is us saying goodbye” product. The date and format alone make me hesitant to cite the certificate, but on top of that, the certificate is inconsistent with prior canon.

I am intimately familiar with retcons and conflicting numbers in the DC timeline. I made a point at the beginning of this paper to tell you that although this is my best attempt to make a cohesive timeline, assuming that I can carve out a cohesive timeline is fundamentally flawed.

I’m not saying that a single contradictory number is enough to make me disregard a source. I am saying that in this particular conversation about an already suspect source, I’m going to take inconsistency into account.

In New Titans #55 (1989), the issue from Corrections, Dick finds out about Jason’s death because a team member notices Jason’s status is set at “unknown.” Dick uses Bruce’s passcode to access restricted information, and he and the Titans see that Jason’s real status is “deceased.”

The death certificate in The Batman Files (2011) marks Jason’s height at 4’6 and his age at 15. In contrast, Dick’s scene puts Jason at 5’4, and its only reference to Jason’s age is a very relatable question from Donna. “How old was he, anyway?”

There’s a substantial difference between the two heights, and I think it’s also worth noting that for a 15 year old American male, 4’6 is in the 0.1 height percentile. In the past, I and many others have tried to justify that height along the lines of Jason being malnourished or similarly afflicted. Personally, I liked the parallel between this height for Jason and Damian’s height at his own death in 2013, and I know I’ve talked about that in the past.

I’m not criticizing anyone for using the 4’6 number, but I do think the unlikelihood of a 15 year old that size is worth bringing up.

In summary, The Batman Files (2011) is so bad of a source that I’m only willing to use it as a last resort. Unfortunately, it’s time for a last resort.

I mentioned a timeline in Batman Annual #25 (2006) that counts forward from Jason’s death. I’m not going to use image cites here because they’re just isolated text boxes labeled either “six months later” or “one year later.”

Using that timeline, we know that Jason’s resurrection took place six months after his death. He spent one year in a coma, then one year on the street, then one year with the League of Assassins. Finally, he spent a nebulous time training before he returned to Gotham.

We know that Jason was gone for a minimum of three and a half years, then whatever time “training” includes. Personally, I’m applying my best attempt at comic logic to say he was missing for somewhere between three and four years.

To understand the next bit, I need to point out that from Jason’s death on, I’m going to be using Tim’s age to track time in the same way I’ve been using Dick’s so far.

As a reminder, I know what age Bruce was when Dick became Robin (28), and I know Dick’s age at the same point (13), so I know there’s a 15 year age difference. As I track Dick’s age through the timeline, I add 15 to get Bruce’s.

In the same way, I know what age Dick was when Jason became Robin (19), and I know Jason’s age at the same point (12), so I know there’s a 7 year age difference. I can use that number ongoing.

I know that Tim was 13 when he made his first appearance as Robin, and I’ll get into that in the next section. After that, I’m placing Dick, Tim, and Cass’s adoptions based on Tim’s age.

To do that, I need to know how much older Dick is than Tim, and I can only get that by knowing Jason’s age at his death, sort of.

How long was Jason Robin? If I had that information, I could establish Jason’s age by counting up from 12, the age when he became Robin, then establish Tim’s age from there.

I can’t really answer that question. There is a panel from Batman #436 where Dick, apparently in his first time at the manor since Jason’s death says the following.

My instinctual interpretation is it’s been two years since he stopped being Robin at 19, making Dick 21 and Jason 14. In my opinion, that’s straightforward plain language, but it seems like I’m in the minority on that one, and most folks read it as Dick saying it’s been two years since he was last at the manor. We know from Batman #416 (1988) that Dick’s last visit to the manor was 18 months after Dick left home.

I think the most honest thing to say is that Jason was Robin for an indeterminate amount of time that was somewhere between two and three years. I don’t know which number is closer. I also, if you remember, think that Jason was gone from Gotham for somewhere between three and four years, but I don’t know where in that range the real number is.

Here’s why absolutely nothing I’ve said in the past seven pages matters: I need to build my timeline based on the age gap between Jason and Tim.

I don’t know how old Tim was when Jason died.

I know how old Tim was at his first appearance as Robin, and that’s a different number.

We’ll finish this conversation in a moment.

Tim becomes Robin

We begin, thankfully, with a straightforward fact. Tim’s first storyline spans Batman #440-442 (1989). The arc is called A Lonely Place of Dying, and we already talked about it. Tim, having watched Batman and Robin from the shadows for years, comes forwards in the aftermath of Jason’s death in an attempt to convince Dick to become Robin for a second time.

We know that Tim was 13 years old at the time, but I do need to clarify exactly what time that was— an indeterminate amount of time after Jason’s death.

The word that pops up a couple of time in Tim’s first arc is “months,” from Tim and Two-Face. How many months? Who’s to say.

Batman #442 (1989)

So, from the top. We know that Bruce was eight when his parents died, 26 when he became Batman, 27 when he met Dick, 28 when Dick became Robin, and 34 when he met Jason.

Dick was 12 when he met Bruce, 13 when he became Robin, 19 when he left home and Jason became Robin.

Jason was 12 when he became Robin.

Bruce is 15 years older than Dick. Bruce is 22 years older than Jason.

Dick is 7 years older than Jason.

How long was Jason Robin? Unknown, but somewhere between two and three years. At that point, he died. “Months” after that, Tim was 13.

Here, we need to acknowledge that Jason could have been either 14 or 15 at his death, and at the same time, Tim was either 12 or 13. We need to know how far they are apart to calculate Tim’s age in relation to Jason, Dick, and Bruce— ongoing, we will always know exactly how old Tim is, so (if we know how far apart Jason and Tim are) we will always know Bruce, Dick, and Jason’s age from there.

How much older than Tim is Jason? Somewhere between one and three years, I guess, but I can’t really go beyond a well-researched guess. In my opinion, there isn’t a straightforward answer for this one.

Having presented my facts, here is my conclusion. Jason was 15 when he died. At the same time, Tim was 13. They are two years apart.

Why? To begin, I’m more comfortable using the number we already have for Tim, 13, than I am dropping him to 12 on the mere possibility that he could have been 12.

Second, even though The Batman Files (2011) is a terrible source, it does at least sort of indicate that the official DC position is a Jason who was 15 years old at his death.

Third, visually speaking, Jason looks closer to 15 than 14 at his death. Is that good evidence? No, absolutely not. Comic book art is definitionally variable, but I am going to pull a few panels for you to look over.

Batman #427 (1988)

Finally, I feel that Jason and Tim are, in later works, treated as if they are different ages. I’m not going to go into much detail on that one because it is purely a personal reaction, but I would refer to Teen Titans #29 (2005) as an example. That issue has Jason and Tim’s first meeting, after Jason comes to the tower specifically to attack Tim.

Another well-known issue to check out is Teen Titans #47 (2007).

My basic position is that there are so many ways, all uncertain, to slice Jason and Tim’s ages that I can take my pick. I chose the ones that most closely mirror later canon, fall most squarely into the possible range, and feel the most intuitively right.

They also have the benefit of simplicity, which was very much a factor.

Don’t agree with me? Fair enough. I think I’ve given you enough information to make an educated judgment, and I’ve also gone ahead and made a timeline in the alternative. In this one, Jason was 14 at death, and he and Tim are only one year apart.

Cass appears

Having progressed beyond Jason and Tim’s age gap, we reenter simple canon. I hope you’re as pleased as I am.

Cass was 17 years old at her first appearance, which we can establish easily based on two different issues. Cass first appears in Batman #567 (1999), during an arc called No Man’s Land. At the time, she is working for Barbara Gordon in the aftermath of an earthquake that destroyed most of Gotham. We learn Cass’s backstory through that issue.

Cass’s biological father is David Cain, a villain, who raised Cass in isolation, never exposing her to a verbal language or allowing any kind of socialization. By comic book logic, her upbringing gave her a near-superhuman ability to understand and anticipate physical actions, as those actions are her only form of communication.

Cain trained her as a child assassin, then took her to her first kill. Cass murdered a man and experienced, through his body language, the pain he felt at his death. Immediately afterward, she ran away from her father.

Batgirl #62 (2005)

We know that Cass was eight years old when she killed and ran. We also know that her first appearance in Gotham was nine years after she ran, thanks to Barbara Gordon’s file.

Batgirl #1 (2000)

Simple enough. She was 17. How old was everybody else? We find out from Tim’s timeline.

This next bit will come up a few times. We know that Tim was 15 from at least 1993 to 2003, established by three different issues. We know from Detective Comics #668 (1993) that Tim was 15 during Knightquest, the arc where Jean-Paul Valley was briefly Batman. Barbara tells us in 2002 that Tim is still 15, and Tim turns 16 on-panel in 2003.

In Knightquest, Tim gets his driver’s license early, at age 15, because Jack Drake is in a wheelchair. I suppose the wording here is ambiguous on a technicality, but I don’t think there’s any significant argument against Tim being 15; if he was only 14, the language would be different.

Detective Comics #668 (1993)

Next, in Batgirl #24 (2002), Barbara says she’s “sending a 15 year old” as she reaches for Tim’s com line.

We could stop here for Cassandra’s appearance, since that happened in 1999, between the 1993 issue and the 2002 reference. For completion’s sake, however, let’s note that Robin #116 (2003) is about Tim’s 16th birthday. He forgets about it, so his step-mother throws a surprise party.

Okay, so Tim was 15 when Cass appeared at age 17. That puts Bruce at 39, Dick at 24, and Jason at 17 if you’re counting by years elapsed since his birth.

Bruce met his daughter when he was 39 and she was 17, in reference to my original question. Cass is 22 years younger than Bruce, seven years younger than Dick, the same age as Jason, and two years older than Tim.

Dick is adopted

This one, having already established Tim’s timeline, is very simple. Dick was adopted in Gotham Knights #17 (2001).

Again, Tim was 15 from 1993 to 2003, and 2001 falls within that range. Tim was 15, which makes Dick 24 and Bruce 39.

At this point in the timeline, Bruce, a 39 year old, has two adopted children, one of whom is deceased as far as Bruce is concerned. His adopted children are (17) and 24. He has already met two of his future children, Cass and Tim.

A "small" analysis into what killed the boys Part Two: Electric Boogaloo

Having already unprofessionally scienced my way through the food poisoning theory (which was based off of the wiki, just sayin') I am back yet again to science my way through the battery acid theory.

Now, dear JATP tumblr, I know a few of you mentioned on the last post that you wanna use this for fanfics, and to that I say go right ahead! In fact, I will attempt to add as much information as necessary. If you wanna scroll straight to the death info, just go to the green.

So firstly, Alex can be quoted in S1:E1 "Wake Up" as having called the vehicle they took their condiments and dressings for the street dogs out of as an Oldsmobile. This Oldsmobile can be identified by both the shape of the back of the car (4:32) and the ambulance scene where you can also see the Olds-mobile (4:36).

From my searching, this appears to be an '86 Oldsmobile Cutlass (assuming Alex wasn't just calling it old, but oldsmobile went out of business in 2004 so I think we can assume he means the make). For your own personal choice, I'll attach photos of what google tells me is an '86 oldsmobile. I will also add that I know 0 things about cars so if this is inaccurate, I apologise in advance.

Death analysis starts here!

Now that I've solidified the ads i'm getting for the next month, we can move onto the battery itself, and how the boy's death may have panned out. Since this is a Battery Acid theory, I'll talk about what Battery Acid actually is.

sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) - a strong acid made by oxidizing solutions of sulphur dioxide and used in large quantities as an industrial and laboratory reagent. The concentrated form is an oily (note that for later), dense, corrosive liquid.

Fun fact about sulfuric acid - It has a pH of 0.5. For comparison, stomach acid usually has a pH of 1.5 - 3.5. If you haven't a clue what pH is, its basically (get it, basic?) How acidic or basic/alkaline a substance is. 0 is strongly acidic, 7 is neutral (so like water) and 14 is strongly basic/alkaline.

Another interesting point to mention, which I personally believe is quite interesting, is, according to Wikipedia, Sulfuric acid is often found in Anti-Rust products. What did Mr.Death Vendor say about Alex getting pickle juice on the Battery cables? "It'll help with the rust." Assuming Alex accidentally dropped a pickle onto the cables, then picked it back up again and put it on his soon-to-be-eaten death dog, it's fairly likely that his pickles were contaminated with Anti-Rust chemicals. Assuming other people possibly did this too, and put the pickles BACK, hoping to get away with it, it's very likely it contaminated the other toppings.

Equally, it's likely that the battery leaked, and through whatever freak accident (we already know this hot dog stand was unsanitary, okay?), and contaminated the toppings that way, presumably by someone dropping a pickle into the juice. Battery Acid being oily and all that, it would be easy to assume it was just grease from the Hot dog.

So anyways, however it got there, being stronger than the average stomach acid, Sulfuric acid will likely damage the epithelial cells, which protect the stomach lining. This would have created gastric ulcers (which are anecdotally a nightmare). This would lead to bleeding, and so will lead into my next point.

According to mountsinai.org, symptoms of sulfuric acid poisoning include: Breathing difficulty due to throat swelling, burns in the mouth and throat, drooling, fever, rapid development of low blood pressure (shock), severe pain in the mouth and throat, speech problems, vomiting with blood and vision loss.

Imagine, if you will, Bobby coming up to find the boys before their performance, and finding the three of them either puking blood, unable to breathe or unable speak. Imagine if, in their last moments, they couldn't see or speak to Bobby, they could only hear him screaming for help, all three entirely unable to comfort him. Or maybe he was silent in shock, and so all of them, to this day, are unaware of what that poor boy witnessed that night.

So, entirely, the Battery Acid/ Sulfuric Acid theory is almost doubly more horrifying than the E-Coli Food Poisoning theory, which I will link below if you wanna check that out. Anyways, this is yet again my unprofessional opinion, I am not a specialist in this subject and this entirely internet research.

TL;DR: Sulfuric Acid Poisoning may have killed the boys.

It Costs That Much (And Took Me Fucking Hours)

So, a few moments ago I shared my picture of my crochet Thorin. I’m bad, I should have shared it here months ago when I finished him. I didn’t. More often than not I forget that I even HAVE a tumblr. Because life is short and I have a huge, huge, huge amount of stuff to get done. All the time. Kids, house renovations, just standard housework, my maths and physics degree that I decided to start right as a global pandemic kicked off (not my smartest decision but no going back now). All that to say, when I do get a little bit of down time, I like to crochet, knit and sew. Sometimes all in the same project.

Which is where the Crochet Company of Thorin Oakenshield comes in.

It is also where my biggest pet peeve of the craft world comes in. You see, these little buggers cost money to make. And probably quite a lot more than you would think. For the sake of argument, you see this picture, you have the skills required to make him, you simply need to get in all the materials that I did in order to do so. Now assume that you have NONE of those things in the house (unusual for us craft addicted types but humour me). Here is a list of the things you would have to buy: safety eyes, 5 different colours of DK (3 weight/light worsted to you non-British folks) in flesh tone (of choice), hair colour, fur collar colour, tunic colour, mail shirt (yes, I crocheted the mail shirt rather than taking up making my own chain mail, it adds to the squishy). You also need one ball of black aran (4 weight/worsted again for you non-British peeps, and doesn’t that just show my age???) for the coat and boots. Poly fill, to give him shape, because what’s the point of making a stuffy if you don’t, you know, stuff it? Plus you need black cotton fabric for the trousers, oh, but you can only get that by the metre where ever you are, and look, you need blue velvet too, and that’s ok because you only need half a metre of that, but it’s still going to be more expensive than the damn cotton (and don’t forget your sewing thread).

I would like to point out that due to that bloody velvet, Thorin is the most expensive doll of the 5 I’ve made so far.

But wait! There’s one more thing you need. See, I free handed the details of his clothes, because I am an over achiever who refuses to be stopped just because there isn’t a set pattern. But I did NOT free hand the body. Instead of making that up as I went and causing myself unnecessary stress, I purchased the AFP body from Cottonflake on etsy (no longer in their store but that might change if you message them and ask, I don’t know, I just know I make precisely 0 pennies from this). So factor that pattern into your list of things to buy too because it’s still part of your initial outlay I’m afraid.

Thus, your total outlay (based on the costs I’ve calculated based on my usual retailers, receipts I dug out of my emails for various bits and so on) is....

Hold on to your hats folks

£45.72.

That’s right. Just to make Thorin, with the assumption that you don’t have a random couple of balls of DK in the right colours lurking around in your house, is forty-five pounds and seventy-two pennies. In American money that’s something like $61.73 (according to google).

None of that factors in time, which because each doll is freehand as far as features and clothes are concerned is somewhere upwards of 40 hours. See, crafting isn’t cheap. Now, I know what you’re going to say; “But, Artemis, you can use some of those things more than once. You’ve got enough fabric there to put trousers on the whole Company, and five more pairs of safety eyes, and loads of different lengths of yarn left, and quarter of a bag of poly fill!” Yes, yes I do. But let me tell you a thing. If I were to sell these majestic buggers, the recommendation is that I charge three times my cost of materials. So that’s £137.16! PER DOLL. Now, if someone asked me to make the whole Company, maybe I would only charge for the cotton once, and charge twice for the velvet because the current Bilbo plan is to use burgundy velvet for his coat. Two pattern charges, because Bilbo’s body pattern is different and only charge for three packs of safety eyes but would only be able to lop the cost of one, at absolute most two, packs of poly fill off because of the small amounts left at the end of a doll. But that would be if someone ordered the full set of fourteen (not getting into Gandalf right now, and certainly not getting into the additional UK testing requirements law that likes to rear its head at times like this). For that full set of fourteen dolls I could charge £1609.19. You read that right. just over 1.6k. Which would make it £114.94 per doll, and cost the person making each one £38.31 for materials alone. That’s a BIG difference. It doesn’t seem like it, but that £20 difference between the individual doll for sale prices might mean the difference between eating for the next two days, or keeping the lights on. That extra £7 for materials might just not be possible because there’s no mark up to absorb it. Based off 40 hours of work the maker charging £137.16 (with materials at £45.72) is paying themselves just £2.29 PER HOUR. If they charge the lower price of £114.94 less the materials cost of £38.31 is paying themselves a grand total of £1.92 an hour.

We’re talking a minimum of 560 hours of work. 40 hours is a work week. So one doll a week for fourteen weeks... Accounting for materials that’s £1072.85 to cover more than three months of work! £76.63 per week. Which is about what it costs to feed my family each week if you want to get into it. No bills, no other necessities. Just food.

When you break it down like that, why are people so reluctant to pay crafting people for their time. I make you a thing, making that thing costs materials, it costs time, it requires me to be in my house with the heat on (and likely the lights). Possibly with a computer on if I haven’t printed the pattern.That £1.92 an hour doesn’t go very far at that point. And you know, if you’re asking me to make you this item, it means that I have a skill you don’t, or maybe just time that you don’t. Why is my skill not valued by you? I didn’t wake up one morning, pick up a hook and magically know how use it. It took me MONTHS to progress past a granny square and a ball. This doll represents years of practice, and not just practising crochet I might add. Why is my time less valuable than yours? You have the skills but not the time. Why is that? What makes your time more valuable than mine? What amazing, worthwhile, thing are you doing in your downtime that I’m not? Inquiring minds desire to know why your downtime is more valuable than mine.

“But, Artemis!” you cry again. “You enjoy making this stuff, I don’t need to pay you to do something you enjoy.”

Well, yes you do actually. Because I have other things I want to do, or need to do. I have other projects to make and work on. If you want me to give yours the time of day, you need to convince me that it’s worth giving up my free time to make you something that you want rather than something I want to do, because nothing saps the enjoyment out of making something like knowing that someone else is expecting you to do it for nothing at all.

Now, obviously there are times when 3 times the cost of materials is just a bit too cheeky. There is some seller discretion here. We know when to draw the line. I’m not going to charge £30 for a bookmark that cost me an hour and a fraction of a ball of wool to make (and I sure as shit wouldn’t use a £10 ball of wool to do it anyway). In that case I would charge half the cost of the yarn, plus local minimum wage. The yarn cost is covered, I get something for my time and I can probably absorb that amount of yarn into another project without too much difficulty, but if you’re going to pay £450 for some crochet granny square coatigan that’s popped up in whatever designer catalogue that just dropped through your door or dropped into your email, you can pay me the same courtesy. Because crochet cannot be done by machines. Every time you pick up a crochet hat, it’s been handmade by someone somewhere in the world, and likely for pennies in a sweat shop. That £450 coatigan is probably still under priced for the number of stitches in it and the hours taken to make it. That cute crochet vest for under £20 in whatever fast fashion store you like to go to, probably would barely cover the cost of materials for an independent crafter, so the poor soul who made it is absolutely being exploited.

So, whenever someone tell you that materials alone are going to cost x amount, don’t argue about whether they have odds and ends at home. Because even if they do, you aren’t that special. You don’t get to pay the discounted rate just because Karen’s order absorbed the cost of 50% of the materials needed. You pay the same amount because crafters have the same expensive basic needs that you do. We need to eat, we need a roof over our heads and clothes on our backs. And for that we need money.

Featuring: Destiel with actor!Dean and professor!Cas

It started because of a movie role Dean landed. This was the first major studio dramatic role Dean was hired for after over a decade of playing dumb jocks and ditzy playboys. His agent, who was also his younger brother, suggested Dean do some one-on-one research for this role.

That’s what brought him to Boston, Massachusetts to the office of Professor Castiel Krushnic. The professor was, according to Sam’s research, the most well established expert on religious studies in the US. If anyone would be able to help Dean, a lifelong agnostic, sink his teeth into the role of a seminary student questioning his faith after a family tragedy, it would be the professor.

There was only one problem.

Cas was gorgeous, insanely smart, and had the driest humor of anyone Dean had ever met. The combination left Dean stumbling over his words like all of the airhead pretty boys he’d played in movies.

Somehow, Cas was patient enough with Dean to let him get comfortable and find his words.

What was supposed to be just one lunch meeting to take general notes about the role and questions Dean could focus on when finding his character’s motivation turned into regular visits, phone calls, emails, and late nights staring at the ceiling of whatever room Dean was living out of at the time thinking about something Cas had said.

It wasn’t until Sam heard the “Take Me To Church” ringtone Dean had set for Cas on his phone that Dean realized he should probably do something about all the feelings he had bubbling around inside himself.

And tonight, all of those months of awkwardness and long nights would pay off.

“You look more nervous than I do,” Cas said as he came up behind Dean to adjust his tie in the hotel bathroom mirror. “Isn’t walking the red carpet part of your job?”

Dean grimaced.

“It’s not my favorite part.”

“And what would your favorite part be?”

“Wooing pretty professors and convincing them to be my date for the awful red carpet parts of the job.”

“Oh, I see, so this was all just a long con so you could drag someone else into your misery?”

“Well, Sammy refuses to walk the red carpet anymore.”

Cas hummed.

“Yes, he told me about the ‘super fan’ he acquired after joining you for the Playthings release.”

“Becky was a sweet girl,” Dean said, truthfully. “She just had a thing for dolls and Sam is terrified of clowns, so it never would have worked out between them.”

“By that logic,” Cas said. “A faithless man and a religious studies professor would be doomed too, would it not?”

“Hell no,” Dean said. “That just means our story is even more epic than anyone else’s.”

Cas hummed at him and patted his shoulder.

In A Moment of Unsteady Peace

This was written for @starrynightdeancas's gift exchange.

Tumblr user @team-grumpy-hunter-and-gay-angel wanted a fic with: Hurt/Comfort, sick fic, bathing each other, pining, angst, post hunt caring for one another, Dean is hurt. No Endverse. Anywhere else in canon is good.

It's set during late season 15 and there is no deal with The Empty.

I wrote this listening to "Unsteady" by X Ambassadors and "Peace" by Taylor Swift on repeat, and they inspired the title.

Dean pressed a hand to his ribs on the right side of his chest and groaned. Why did the bunker have so many stairs? You’d think the Men of Letters would have had the forethought to install some kind of magic elevator. He leaned against the wall and rested his head. Maybe he could hang out up here for a little while. Get his strength back before making his way down the stairs. Less chance of ending up as a pile of broken bones that way. Well, more broken bones, if the ache in his ribs was anything to go by.

“Dean?” Cas called out as he raced across the war room and up the stairs to Dean’s side. “What happened? I thought you’d finished with the vampire nest in Abilene last night. You didn’t mention getting injured.”

“I wasn’t last night.” Dean grinned at him. Judging by the copper taste in his mouth and Cas’s increasingly worried expression, his teeth were probably covered in blood. “I picked up a milk run case on the way home. It was supposed to be a quick salt and burn.”

“If it was such a quick, easy hunt, why are your ribs broken?”

“The ghost was friskier than I expected.” Dean gave him a lazy wink. “I can’t help it that even the dead want a piece of this.”

“You’re insufferable,” Cas said.

“Aw, come on, are you really going to glare at me all night, or are you gonna help me down the stairs?”

They both knew Cas’s grace wasn’t up to healing Dean at the moment. Not since Chuck had started fucking with Cas from a distance. And with Jack out of town with Sam and Eileen, that left Dean needing regular first aid.

Cas wrapped an arm around Dean’s lower back. His touch was warm on Dean’s hip.

Dean closed his eyes for just a moment. Just long enough to think about shifting the fingers cradling his ribs down to brush against the warmth of Cas’s skin. Instead, he opened his eyes and pushed away from the wall.

The stairs took a little longer than normal to navigate, but Dean wasn’t complaining. Not when Cas was freely touching him like this. Not when Dean felt so terrible after the fight with the spry ghost who’d tossed him around like a fucking rag doll.

GIF Making Tutorial Using Photoshop CC

Here’s my GIF making tutorial, hope it helps you guys :).

Hey all, since people on Twitter and on Tumblr keep asking me how to make GIFs, I’ve decided to make a Stephen Amell / Arrow GIF tutorial.

Everyone makes GIFs differently, but here is how I make mine. I’m also on PC, if you’re using a Mac GOM player won’t work for you, so you need to find a method to make your screencaps. If you’re able to make them just skip to the GOM player part.

What you need:

GOM Player – You can download it here.

Photoshop CC – You can get a free trial of Photoshop CC for a month. Click here.

What you need to know:

Tumblr GIF sizes: For big GIFs the size is 500p x 500p. For GIF sets, people normally use 245p x 245p, for GIF sets that have three small GIFs in a row, one next to each other the size is 160p x 160p. Tumblr will not accept GIFs that are over 2mb in size. You’ll be able to upload the GIF, however it won’t play.

GIFs on Twitter: On twitter the size of your GIF needs to be 500p. Anything below that will look distorted. I think the maximum size for GIFs on Twitter is 3mb.

GIF colouring & PSDs: Keep in mind that Arrow is a dark show, which makes colouring the GIFs harder. You can colour your own GIFs (which I’ll show you how to do below) or use PSDs which you can find on tumblr. You can search “Arrow PSDs” on Tumblr and you should be able to find some. I prefer to colour my own GIFs.

Video size: Keep in mind that the video size you should be using should be either 720p or 1080p. The higher the quality, the better your GIF will look. Sometimes people GIFing in lower resolutions will use darker PSDs.

Let’s get started shall we? I’ll start by GIFing a scene from Stephen Amell on Reel Side

Open your video with GOM Player. You could always open your video directly in Photoshop, but I don’t like doing that and this is my tutorial lol.

Go to the scene you want to GIF hit pause, then hit Ctrl+G, the screencap menu will pop up and here are the settings you should set, for GIFs. Make sure your “Burst Interval Sec.” is at 0.05 (this is the speed for normal GIFs), “Quality” should be at 255 and for Burst Capture Image you can set it to the amount of frames you want. I just keep my settings like the ones below and just delete the frames I don’t want. Also, make sure to check in which folder your screencaps are going to go.

Start by playing the video and hit the “Burst capture” button. Once the scene is done, close GOM player.

Open photoshop, click “File” scroll down to “Script” and select “Load Files into Stack…”

It will bring you to a browse button so you can go find your screencaps on your computer. Select all the ones you want to use for the GIF. The above menu should pop up, click “Ok” and let Photoshop load the layers.

This is my screen after doing the steps above. You can see all my screencaps loaded on the sidebar on the right. You guys ready? We’re going to go through a series of steps now, it might seem complicated at first but once you get the hang of it, you’ll do it automatically. Click on the “Create Frame Animation Button”. One screencap will load.

Click on the little button where the red arrow is, a menu will pop up, click on “Make Frames From Layers”. All your screencaps will load at the bottom.

Click on the button again and then click on “Reverse Frames”. For some reason, Photoshop, always loads frames in reverse order. Again, click on the button and this time click “Select all Frames”.

Now that all your frames are selected, click on the little downward arrow at the bottom of a frame where the speed is, it should be written “0 sec.”. Click “Other”

Another menu will pop up to let you chose your speed. If I’m making a GIF at normal speed I’m going to enter 0.1. Choose your speed and click “OK”. Still following me? Let’s continue ;)

See the button at the bottom that says “Once”? If you keep the “Once” setting, your GIF is just going to run one time and stop. You want a GIF with a loop. So click on the “Forever” button. At this point if you click the play button arrow at the bottom you should see your GIF animation.

I’m going to crop my GIF first, so I’m going to click on the crop button on the left and then crop my GIF according to what I want in the frame. Once I’ve select the area I want cropped out, I’m going to click “Crop”.

This is what my GIF looks like now. I think it’s a little too fast, so I’m going to go back to the step about speed and set my speed to 0.15.

This is my GIF at 0.15. I like the GIF speed now, however, look at the colouring. It’s kind of meh right? We’re going to go change the colour. At this point you could just add a PSDs over it, but like I mentioned I like making my own. Also, I probably should have used a different video to do make a tutorial, as this one is dark. But too late.

Still with me? Okay, let’s keep going.

As you can see from above, I went to play in the curves, colour balance, selective colour and I also went in the brightness/contrast. All of these are available where the red arrow is. You can see all the changes I’ve made in the sidebar. Also note that in selective colour, you go colour by colour changing the tone as you go. Choose what looks best to you.

This is my GIF now. It’s a little greenish, but since this is a tutorial and it’s already taking me forever I’m going to let it be. If you wanted to stop at this point and not add text you could click on “File” and then “Save for Web”.

A menu will pop up, make sure the setting are as above. Check the size of your GIF to make sure it’s the correct size to be uploaded on Tumblr or Twitter. If it isn’t, go back and delete some frames. I wasn’t going for a square GIF, if so I would have cropped it as a square. I wanted a GIF with a width of 500p, so if you look where the “W:” is I entered a width of 500p. If I would have done a square crop the “H:” would have automatically re-adjusted to 500p as well, once I entered 500p for the width.

If you’re making a GIF set, you’re going to want to save your layers so your colours remain the same throughout the GIF set. To do that, you need to make a PSDs file. Select all your layers on the right side bar (don’t select the frames). Click the “Layer” button at the top and go down and click on “Duplicate Layers”

A drop down menu will appear, click “New”, then add a name. I’m going to name mine SA Reel Side.

How do you still have time to write your fanfiction, even if you're so busy? I never find the time to work on mine :(

In short: give yourself a set amount of time everyday, as small or as big as you want, and do nothing but write.

In long:

I managed to find an efficient way to have at least a bit of time to write, since it’s my main hobby and my way of getting rid of stress. Basically, if I know I’ll be studying the entire day (I normally take an hour break to go for a walk while I still can, otherwise I’ll just go crazy), I’ll stop studying to have lunch, which normally takes me maybe 10/15 minutes max, and then write for 30 minutes more or less. Unfortunately, this only gives me time to work only on one project, while some time ago I could easily work on two or three simultaneously, but it’s a good way to ensure that 1. I get to do something I enjoy and 2. I get to rest for a bit before studying again.

Luckily for me, I got so used to writing and coming up with stuff that I can write up to 3/4 full pages before running out of time, so I can get as much as I can from a single day. This is the main reason why I’m able to keep up with my fanfiction. The second main reason is even simpler: I write shorter chapters that I’m used to, save for some exceptions, and I only publish one chapter a week. This gives me enough time to write, even if I have to skip writing for 4/5 days.

Other hobbies I have, like drawing, I keep for the evening, when my brain is too tired to function and I can just relax with a good old pencil in hand, so during my afternoon break I can focus just on writing.

Other than that, though, I had to put my other stuff on hiatus. I have a Yu-Gi-Oh! fanfiction going on, that I had to stop because I’m writing it in both Italian and English and it has pretty long chapters, so it takes too long for me to even think about writing it now. And I have a BNHA series going, that I also had to pause because I’m writing it all in English, and I cannot focus enough during such a short break to write a fully fledged work in a different language that is actually good. This specific fanfiction I have going on now, the Saint Seiya collection of stories, is only in Italian. I don’t have a translation to worry about (in fact, I postponed an eventual English translation to when I actually have time to put into it), and it’s much easier for me to come up with stuff in Italian rather than in English.

If you want to have some time to work on your stuff, if you can give yourself 20/30 minutes of your time daily, you can write a lot without realizing it, and you won’t waste time. If you work and go back home tired at the end of the day, find 5/10 minutes of your time, sit in front of your screen and piece of paper, and write something. Anything, even a single sentence.

I literally used this last method myself last year, when I used to go to my university in the morning and come back in the evening. 10 minutes and a couple sentences, even when I was so tired I just wanted to sleep without even eating, helped me unwind some of the tension I accumulated during the day and work towards complete chapters. If you’re on an even tighter schedule, grab a piece of paper while you’re cooking and write down the general idea you have for the story. I do this when I’m panic studying before an exam, days that I normally spend from morning to evening just flipping through books and notes without breaks, and it works amazingly. As soon as I have time, I go through what I wrote, write it on my computer, and then go from there to an entire story with ease. Sometimes I even take notes on my phone, when ideas and dialogues come to mind, so I can always be ready to write even if I just have 5 minutes.

This is not a perfect method, and if you’re having multiple works going on you might want to either pause some of them or divide them according to your schedule, but I find it work perfectly for me. Doing this, I actually managed to write more than 10 chapters in less than a month, but remember: only because I focused only on one thing. If I were to try more, I probably would still be stuck at chapter 3. I had a Yu-Gi-Oh! collab going on with my friend that I had to stop, and I had more stuff that I had to give up on because if I have to prioritize, I prioritize my own works. Some other collabs I’m still hopeful about, included to Saint Seiya ones, but with just 30 minutes a day it’s incrediblly difficult.

Lastly, I don’t use those 30 minutes to write on this blog. I normally keep the posts I do on here for the evening, and if I want something to be posted during the day I simply write it the evening before and postpone it using tumblr’s feature. Most daily posts you see on this blog, save for some answers to asks that I genuinely want to answer as soon as possible, are actually programmed posts I wrote the evening before. This is the reason why some of your asks take a while to be answered, and it’s also the reason why I’m writing this particular answer at 0:50am. Sometimes, if it’s just a simple reblog or a very short post, I use my phone. I also answer to people that want to chat with me, even if slowly, because I keep the app on my phone. But anything longer, that takes a computer and much more effort, get the treatment you read above.

And now, since it’s late and I’m as tired as my pokemon after being knocked out by Cynthia, I’m going to sleep. I hope my answer helped!

F.I.R.E

Financial Independence, Retire Early

Disclaimer - I have not yet retired. However, I decided to start this blog to track my journey, and hopefully give others ideas on where to go. I am located in the US so I will be referencing US Tax law, the general principals should translate to other countries (or not be applicable in the case of healthcare costs!)

Below is a summary of the advice in this post, and below that is the actual post.

Pieces of Advice:

If you’re young invest in high risk high growth stock funds (preferably 0 fee index funds), then transition to lower risk lower growth bond funds as you get older.

If your job offers an FSA or HSA choice: Get the FSA if you have consistent known medical expenses each year because those funds won’t roll over. Get the HSA if you don’t (and MAX it). Check to see if your HSA allows you to invest funds. Mine allows investments past the first $2,000 and any gains are 100% tax free.

Max out your 401(k) if you can. If you can’t at least get the max company match.

IRAs are great. If you don’t make much now and hope to make more in the future use a Roth IRA. If you plan on retiring early and living on a low income use a Traditional IRA.

Real estate investing can be a good way to build your assets. But REITs also work if you don’t want to buy a house (or aren’t able to yet).

You need a budget!

First, I’ll give you some background. I am 24 years old (okay 23, but I turn 24 in a month) and have been working since I was 17. I also SUCK at budgeting! So where have 6 years of work and 9 years of budget gotten me? A net worth of about $50,000

Which, as it turns out, is slightly above average for the above average person (according to Financial Samurai - which is an excellent FIRE blog if you want something established rather than evolving).

I’ve been investing since I was 18 when I opened an American Funds account. Unfortunately, I opened it with someone who was used to handling money for people in their 60s so he put it all in a bond fund (read terrible returns!) so I lost out on years of growth before I thought to check and see why the returns were so much worse than my other investments. I’ve made more in the last year in a Growth Fund than the first three in the Bond fund.

Speaking of other investments, Robinhood is Really good for shits and giggles! I don’t recommend it for long-term investing goals, but if you have $100 to spare (or really like $5 you don’t need to start big) it can be fun to invest just to see where you go.

If you sign up with this link: join.robinhood.com/amandaw1188 you get a free stock too! My coworker, the lucky bastard, got one worth about $400. The max is $500 and in my experience the average is ~$5. But hey, that’s $5 free dollars.

I went to college when I was 18, and was lucky enough to take out minimal loans. I did that by attending a lower cost college, taking advantage of education tax credits, working ~45 hours a week during the semester and ~70 during the summer, and getting some scholarships.

In Spring of 2019 I transitioned to a “Big Girl” job (by only taking night classes that semester) and was working a corporate job as a Financial Data Analyst a few months before I graduated.

In the first year I maxed my HSA and put some money into my 401(k) - though I didn’t put anything into an IRA (My Bad!). Instead I built up enough cash for a deposit on a duplex.

An aside on the HSA - check to see if you can invest a portion of your funds. I’ve been dumping mine into stock and made an extra $1,300 that will never be taxed. Even if you are a relatively healthy individual - you will get old and having some money set aside for medical expense will be useful. If you aren’t a relatively health individual it’s even more important to be building funds for medical expenses. (Part two of that plan is to retire to somewhere that isn’t the USA since we have such a terrible healthcare system).

Now I live in one side of the duplex and have renters on the other side. Unfortunately I live in a housing bubble so the mortgage - rent = ~my rent prior to buying the house. But at least now I’m building equity!

This year in 2021 I will be maxing my 401(k), HSA, and IRA. (The alternative is to save for another house but my area is expensive and I don’t really want to manage a rental from a distance).

To manage all of this I will be living on less than half of my original paycheck. So when I say I suck at budgeting - I mean I have an unfortunate problem to overcome! However, I also have the benefit of hating to spend money. . . I blame spending my childhood thinking I was going to be homeless (fun times. . . )

Okay so that was a long and probably not that interesting post! But future ones should be more finance focused. I’m always happy to answer questions, and if I don’t know the answer I will research it for you because I love any excuse to learn!

P.S. I chose Tumblr as a platform because I hoped that a lot of you young’uns might be interested in planning your finances before you get to the money making stages. And because I hoped that some older users would also be willing to share their perspectives and experiences!

MDZS Timeline Shenanigans

Okay, so I was making my own MDZS Timeline for my fic and I was plotting the Twin Jades’ births and conception dates. As I was researching (read: referencing the MDZS wiki and scouring through tumblr), I confirmed/learned that:

Lan Xichen’s birthday is on October 8

Lan Wangji’s birthday is on January 23

“Given that he was still a junior at the start of the Sunshot Campaign, Lan Xichen was less than three years older than his younger brother Lan Wangji. [1] Together, the two of them were known as the Twin Jades of Lan.” - Lan Xichen/Overview page on the MDZS wiki

According to @thewickling‘s (hello, sorry, if you don’t want to be tagged please tell me and I’ll remove this) analysis of the references to Jin Ling’s age, it’s very likely that MDZS follows the “a child is 1 year old at the time of their birth” convention

Now, because of these points, I rationalized that:

If Lan Wangji was born on January 23 of (for example) Year 0, then his conception date would be around April/May of Year -1.

If Lan Xichen is less than three years older than his brother, if his birthday is on October 8, and if he’s considered 1 year old at the time of his birth, then his birthdate would have to be October 8 of Year -2. This would satisfy the conditions as:

He would be 1 y/o on the day of his birth; and

He would be 2 y/o turning 3 y/o on the year of his brother’s birth, so he would be less than three years older than Lan Wangji

Then I realized that, if this is the case, then there’s only a 6-7 months difference between Lan Xichen’s birth and Lan Wangji’s conception... Σ(ﾟДﾟ)

I don’t know what this says about Qingheng-Jun and Madam Lan but it certainly says something hahahaha

For the last few months Apollo Medicines provides me ten percentages rebate and for some months now it is providing me 11 percentages but as comparing with netmeds I found extremely convenient for following reasons.

I just upload the prescription and it is approved within a day and then I ordered the products and got 20 percentages of rebate on prepaid order plus ten percentages cash back to my electronic wallet on the next purchases to be done within 31 days and then some extra points which will be slowly accumulating into some money after some purchases.

So, medicines reaches within three to four days and all comes with sorted formats and I do not have to worry about it as well as the savings are now much higher.

Technology aims to resolve the hardships for people and it remove the extra time and provides the leisure for you as well as it aims to provide another bunch of heavier rebates than that of offline shops.

This is because while dealing with electronic commerce you are dealing with business to business directly and thus removes, all bottlenecks in between, and the third persons and thus it able to provide share of their profits in terms of rebates to you.
