#those were some crazy times

Okay, I made a post about this vaguely a while back, and no one interacted with it or said that they wanted to hear more, but I wanna talk about it. When I was a kid, Dexter’s Lab and Johnny Test, and to a lesser extent Gravity Falls, scarred me for years. tw for body horror, clowns, warts, and identity/existential crisis

Johnny Test In Johnny Test, there is an episode where Johnny gets a wart. The wart comes to life and is evil, lies to and manipulates him, and is all around a terrible guy. This wasn’t too bad, mostly just gross, and to this day I’m unsure why it bothered me to the extent that it did. I watched the episode alone, eating a microwave burrito- a favorite food of mine, at the time. On top of getting an irrational fear and disgust towards warts, to the extent that I panicked when one developed on my foot or when I discovered that my cousin had some, I couldn’t eat microwave burrito’s anymore. The thought scared me, and when I walked down the freezer isle at the store with my parents I felt anxious at the idea that they might be nearby. Seeing the boxes of them made me feel sick. To me, it felt like eating another microwave burrito would invite something bad into my life. I didn’t eat another one for years.

Dexter’s Lab In Dexter’s Lab, there’s an episode that I only remember one thing about. There was a clown, and if it bit you, then you became a clown as well. Their bodies twisted into clown form, and they would laugh. That’s all I remember, but as a kid, I was already terrified of clowns. The idea I could become one was horrifying. Even worse, was the idea that the clown might try to make me one of them. For weeks, months, afterwards, I could hardly touch the floor some days. I knew I couldn’t see any clowns, I knew that reasonably there weren’t any clowns, but in my mind they were just out of sight. Usually, that meant they were hiding underneath my chair. If my legs hung down in front of the gap between the chair and the floor, I reasoned, the clowns could lunge out and bite me. Jumping off of my seats only helped somewhat. The picture of clown dentures laid out on the floor like bear traps was so vivid to me that it felt like they were there. The same went for stray teeth littered on the ground. I couldn’t see anything like that, but the idea was there, and that was enough to leave me stranded on couches for hours.

Gravity Falls There is a gravity Falls short in which Dipper investigates a man who only ever faces one direction. I was older when I saw this. The man turned out to be a robot that only had one side, being piloted by tiny beings. Again, this wasn’t really a problem, it wasn’t bad, just strange. But, I had envisioned tiny pilots for myself in the past. They weren’t on my side- though I don’t remember what they wanted. Times when I couldn’t help but repeat a motion over and over, or when I moved one finger and then just had to move every other individual finger in turn I accounted to the tiny pilots. It changed, some days, whether those feelings were being prompted by them or if I was fighting back against them. So, seeing this being on the tv, who moved in uncanny ways and has his own pilots was... bad, for me. I found myself sitting, feeling unable to move- especially unable to turn my head. The longer I couldn’t get myself to move the more afraid I was that I wasn’t real, or that that side of my face was gone, or that I had lost the ability to move that way. I knew that I was okay, but on those days I had to keep my head on a swivel, just in case. And those were some of my childhood fears! :)

so much happened in this whole episode but i’m still on fig infiltrating ruben’s dream, making it look like the place where his friend was murdered, and then disguising herself as kipperlilly & repeatedly saying different variants of “somebody needs to take the fall for this, and it’s not going to be me. it’s going to be you.” while adaine as the elven oracle shows up next to her. can you imagine waking up from that, the idea of a horrible truth being pinned on you by your friend to save her own skin while the personification of fate and destiny stands there, almost as a promise that this is GOING to happen to you. we don’t even know if this kid is guilty. my god.

i don't know if i'll ever be over the greek tragedy shit of mat hearing that he's fated to stab rand, avoiding rand to protect him and in so doing making rand think that mat has abandoned him, then rolling up at a battle to save rand's life only to accidentally stab him just like the prophecy foretold. sophocles is shaking.

idea. since askdusttale answered an ask about where dust got his determination from (because dust has SOME determination just so he can remember the timelines and keep going against the human) and said it was totally up to personal interpretation on how he got his determination. so so so like what if what if dusttale's player did something similar to something new's player and changed dust's code to give him determination??? so dust and killer COULD BOTH had their codes tampered with??? the parallels would be INSANE. they both started off as sans and got their codes tampered with by the player but dust and killer went on two opposite paths. dust out of his own voalition decided to go against the human but killer had to team up with the human no choice at all. the opposite parallels go CRAZY oh god im tweaking

killer doesn't know exactly (since i forgot whether or not he can see codes or something like that. i swear there was an image of him describing fell and swap's code and then his own) but he can SENSE that something's off. something's different about dust that he doesn't quite know about. maybe it gets him to ask a bunch of questions that dust is definitely not open to answering because jesus man mind your own damn business but the question that really sets killer off is the way dust answers when he asks "so if you have determination then how did you get it?" and dust just shrugs his shoulders and said that one day he suddenly remembered the resets and then that's when he got it (and then goes back to mumbling to phantom paps or wtvr) and killer's just like. zomg. a sudden change in behavior or mentality that seemingly has no apparent reason related to the human???? like like like when he suddenly had to agree with the player despite literally never wanting to????? killer is over thinking the implications behind this

meanwhile dust is just annoyed now because killer keeps on following him. he keeps asking him strange questions. wtf why is the guy asking to see his SOUL that's incredibly personal???? he just wants to be left alone man he has no idea what's going on

One of my favourite little things about Apollo is how casual his and the Fates' relationship was.

Now, this isn't to understate how grave the Fates were in any way, as a matter of fact, it's written multiple times about the complex interplay between the Fates and Zeus (Stobaeus even wrote that the Fates were given the seat closest to Zeus' throne so he could better give counsel on all things from their machinations)

Indeed, even Zeus was beholden to them and even though the Fates usually left things up to natural course (and Zeus in his position as Moiragetes - that is, the Leader of Fates could even intercede on these events, even interrupting when a someone was set to die) in a lot of ways, there are many, many things that even Zeus could never interfere with, things that were above even the King of the Heavens. Some really good examples are things like Persephone's Abduction which the Fates ruled as necessary for the propagation of the seasons and his marriages to Themis and Hera.

By all accounts really, the Fates were incredibly stern, incredibly grave deities who presided over law, order, birth and death and even worked with the Furies to punish those who broke the sacred laws!

And then you have Apollo who was also known by the title Moiragetes (In Delphi, there were only two Moirai depicted and in place of the third was Zeus and Apollo Moiragetes according to Pausanias) but who did things like, checks notes, send the Fates to be the midwives of his paramour Evadne when she had to deliver his son alone in secret (by the way, he also sent the actual goddess of childbirth to help. The Fates absolutely did not need to also be there, he was taking every precaution:

and get the Fates drunk so they would agree to save his bestie Admetus' life:

Keep in mind btw - this con Apollo pulled for Admetus was multi-layered and even included getting Heracles to wrestle Thanatos and keep him still so Apollo could proceed to help Admetus cheat Alcestis away from Fates when Admetus expressed regret for making his wife die in his place:

And I cannot stress enough that Apollo faced zero consequences for this nonsense. NONE. The Fates weren't even cordial with other Gods - they're almost never referred to directly, they were often depicted apart from other deities or described as old, ugly and unable to walk (though, generally speaking they were artistically depicted as young maidens!) and apart from comforting Demeter by going to personally explain what happened to Persephone in some versions of the story, they didn't really get humanised the way most of the other gods or spirits did. Usually they're referred to euphemistically, or someone will speak distantly about a prophecy they once heard was designed by the Fates but Apollo? Apollo knew the Fates! He was good friends with the Fates! And I think it's even cooler when you consider that both instances of Apollo showing off his Fate's Favourite privilege have to deal with birth (of Iamus) and death (of Alcestis/Admetus) which were the two points most deeply associated with the Moirai and why there were usually depictions of them as a pair over that of a triad.

(Excerpts sourced from Theoi, Aeschylus' Eumenides, Pindar's Olympian 6 and Statius' Silvae; though just a note, one instance of the Fates' involvement with Apollo is misquoted on Theoi - that is the Fates being present for Apollo's birth, that's actually a misinterpretation of Evadne's birthing of Iamus.)

as I am replaying origins -- a game which, to be clear, I love very VERY much -- I can't help but feel that people do don the rose coloured glasses on it a bit specifically when it comes to the range of dialogue options you're actually given to work with at any given time (something I've seen my fair share of silent vs. voiced protagonist discourse about over the years *smokes tired cigarette in survivor of a decade of DA tumblr*). like... there are a couple of situations where you're given a decent range of responses, but the vast majority of the time you have about three dialogue options, and often they're presented sort of like 'polite/bland/unprovoked near-cartoonish levels of assholery'. arranged like, y'know:

I am [BLANK]. It's an honor to make your acquaintance.

You can call me [BLANK].

How dare you speak to me. Fuck you and your family back five generations. I'm going to rob your mother's grave before your eyes.

(sometimes if you're real lucky you get the secret extra 'Something else/I'm bald/but I'm a dwarf!' option)

I'm not at all saying it's worse in that aspect than the other games (Dalish Inquisitor 'Who's Mythal' just entered the chat), but I do think it's worth considering that this might be a bit of a franchise original sin that has been present since the beginning, as indeed it is in most rpgs because making rpgs is real hard, and you notice it more with the dialogue wheel format than when the responses and questions you can ask are all laid out in a list together

Sorry for disappearing for some time, folks. I'm not exactly sure if it's a valid excuse to vanish for 2 weeks despite having promised some posts and fanfics, but I have been having mental health problems. :(

I genuinely didn't even notice that 2 weeks have passed...when I realized how long it has been, I kinda panicked 😥. Wdym 2 weeks have passed? I've been barely living for 2 weeks?? How did I not realize? 2 WHOLE WEEKS!

I'm not gonna go into detail as to how bad it got, but basically, I was on autopilot the entire time without doing the things that usually make me happy (like playing video games, writing, etc.) This has been, by far, the worst I've gotten with dissociating.

Looking back, I really have been on a cycle of hell weeks at work and posting here on tumblr. I basically forgot to take a real breather for myself. Now that my work project is done (yes, the damn buildings are done. FINALLY.), and there is some kind of lull in genshin (give me Kaeya story quest ch.2), I am feeling a bit lost...

I have no inspiration, no motivation, and no idea how to get out of this state so far, so my solution is... taking a REAL time off where I am actually aware of how much time has passed.

I am taking a break/hiatus. A real one this time.

Again, I'm sorry for the disappearing act and then coming back by announcing that I'm gonna need more time. I promise this isn't forever 🥺
