back at it again for the third year in a row!! personal favorites from this year across multiple fandoms!

no particular order, just based on the order of my bookmarks.

for reference i am sooo picky, i have read over 6000 fics according to ao3, and i've read 700 since the beginning of the year. i only have 53 bookmarks in total... but here are some bookmarked fics i read this year!!!

this year i got into some random shit, blah blah blah, honestly most of these are not faulkner levels of literature doing monuments for the english language but they were good and make me feel a sort of way, so, here you go

This Year's Love by trishjames / drarry E, longfic. love it a lot. genuinely made me want to become an adult. they were meant to be cry emoji

Yes, But It'lll Cost You by mintaminta / drarry T, privated. this one had such a good vibe, reminds me of fun and school and calm darkness. very nice.

Bad Habits by No_One_Special_01289 / drarry E, lowkey porn, longfic. those last few chapters got me SO hard, they love each other omg cry emoji. poor harry. i think i skipped most of the smut when i read it but the plot was so good. literally star crossed lovers UGHHHHH LET THEM BE TOGETHER

Recursion by tessacrowley / drarry E, longfic. its written really well and it's witty, but i kind of think this author just self-inserts herself for draco in all her fics because... that boy was soo pathetic in canon. genius au basically. but i can forgive her bc the fics are good

House M.D. (Hilson)

yes Medical Malpractice Husbands whatever shut up i like the fics and they're probably in love so leave me BE. these fics are good.

Look, Don't Touch by ORiley42 / hilson E, voyeurism fic.... guys HEAR ME OUT HEAR ME OUT OK that makes it sound SOOO bad but trust me i bookmarked this one because the author took such a horrible trope and made it genuinely not feel that creepy. like this fic is SO funny. it's really good. and the author is straight up just a good writer

the sea and the sky and you and i by thismagichour / hilson M, hanahaki angst. its really good because wilson just gives up and its soo heart wrenching bc he thinks house doesnt like him back and just wants to die. poor guy.

My Hero Academia (Dabihawks)

i have not given a Phuque about MHA for the past five years but i had this phase this year where i was briefly re-obsessed with dabihawks so here are some fics

planting trees (making shade) by nightquake / dabihawks T. basically hawks KHS for a good cause ..? really well written, has high tension and good allusions. loved this one. its the kind of fic u know is good by the summary

Hawks Lays an Egg by ButterflyApocalypse / dabihawks T. never in my entire Life 18 Years have i ever enjoyed mpreg except this fic, because he isnt even pregnant he just has this egg. it's such a good funny fic. i was asking myself why i had it bookmarked from like four years ago earlier this year so i reread it and i was like Yeah ok it deserves the bookmark. SOOO funny and ridiculous. crackiest fic.

MISC random fandoms (Battle Cats (????) and A Clockwork Orange)

nyankopalooza by Sanodigy / Battle Cats Game gen. No clue how i even found this. its so funny. ive never read a fic like this. its so funny. and weirdly well written, i like experimental / weirdly formatted fics. i used to play this game when i was a kid

Bitva Gruppa by VoidVesper / a clockwork orange X fight club, alex delarge X tyler durden E. its straight up a horrible plot, AKA CHILD GETS ASSAULTED. warning for underage and assault. it's not a morally good fic (clockwork orange is intentionally a morally wrong book). but holy shit the writing is great. like it reads like it's anthony burgess. just really good. probably one of the only fics here where i straight up bookmarked only because of the writing style

It begins as a subtle discomfort, a nagging sensation at the edge of Harry’s consciousness.  It’s easy to dismiss—a minor annoyance he brushes aside as he goes about his daily routine. But with each passing day, it grows: a persistent prickling heat that seeps into his thoughts, slowly unravelling him.  At first, it’s the small things: Will’s smug face grates on his nerves. Therapy sessions with Healer Adebayo run too long for his liking. Even his cup of tea scalding his tongue feels like an offence.  But soon, Harry begins to see things that shouldn’t exist here: flashes of a dark shadow, figures laughing at and taunting him in the corner of his vision, vanishing before he gets a proper look. They all vaguely resemble re-animated bodies of students he’s seen scattered across the grounds of Hogwarts. At night, his dreams twist into nightmares plagued with screams and faceless figures contorted in agony. Memories of running from the spray of spells, of his classmates being struck down, feel like he is reliving the Battle. And there are always those crimson red eyes, watching Harry, painfully ripping through his mind every night.  The nightmares bleed into his waking hours. He hears voices—whispers that seem to materialise from thin air, hellbent on mocking and condemning him. i’m so so sorry i think i sent the same ask last year or something, but i’ve lost this fic again :/ truly my deepest apologies, i tried searching the blog but tumblr’s search function is total caca

it was i believe a mid-length fic where harry led a promiscuous lifestyle, always having one night stands, and he told draco that he always kissed them on the forehead afterwards to make them feel “special”? draco and harry develop a relationship, then one night harry kisses draco on the forehead after they hook up, and draco leaves thinking what they have is just another hookup to harry, when actually harry’s kiss was real.

Draco is feverishly drawing on the large pad of white paper set up on an easel, his brow furrowed and his tongue caught between his teeth.

“Er…it’s a monkey! It’s a monkey. Monkey see, monkey do!” Oliver Wood shouts. Draco shakes his head and rolls his eyes. “An ape?” the Scottish man continues.

“Going ape shit crazy!”

“It’s a baby,” Harry mutters. Draco nods and scribbles down the word on the drawing pad. He then draws what oddly looks like a big mouth.

“Planet of the Apes?” Ron asks.

“Planet of the Apes?” George repeats, with a quirk of his lips. “He already said it was a bloody baby, how does Planet of the Apes factor in to that?” Angelina giggles beside him.

“Well, it doesn’t look like a baby,” Hermione interjects, earning a kiss on the cheek from Ron and a glare from Draco.

“It really doesn’t,” Neville snorts from his position on the floor pressed against the front of Hannah’s legs. She runs a hand through his hair from her spot in an armchair.

“Thirty seconds,” Dennis Creevey says, holding up a small timer. Draco quickly draws what looks like arrows coming from out of the baby’s mouth, his face twisted up in disbelief as he points to the arrows.

“Big mouth!” Hannah shouts.

“Big Mouth Baby, big baby,” Harry says.

“Ah-ha!” Ron exclaims, snapping his fingers. “Hermione on a bad day!”

“Hey!” Hermione says, punching him lightly on the arm as everyone laughs. Her protests are silenced when Ron leans forward to pepper kisses across her face.

“Baby ape?” Oliver asks.

“Can we forget about the bloody ape?” Harry says.

“I mean, it sorta looks like a fish,” Neville says.

“I think it looks like a chicken,” Angelina says. George nods along.

“Ten seconds,” Dennis says.

“Crying baby, feed the baby, baby food?” Hermione offers, her cheeks flushed as Ron’s lips are pressed and murmuring against her ear. Harry looks away from them. It’s been like this ever since they announced they were trying to get pregnant. He’s sure Ron would strip Hermione naked right now in front of them all, the randy bastard, if it weren’t so obvious that Hermione would AK him for it...or at least he thinks she would...with all their PDA maybe she’d like it...Merlin.

“Draw something that resembles anything!” Harry says, his exasperation clear in his voice. Draco stomps his foot, looking every inch of the petulant baby he’s drawn stuck in a full-grown man’s body. He growls angrily, once again pointing to the arrows, circling them three times.

“That’s it! Times up,” Dennis chirps happily.

“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me, it’s baby talk!” Draco explodes, crossing his arms against his chest. “Granger, I thought you were smart? I’m doubly disappointed in you.”

“Hey!” she cries, scandalised. “Maybe you should learn to draw better!” she shoots back.

I love the idea of them bonding over shared trauma, and I think the best fics exploring this theme are the ones showing that healing is in fact an ongoing (and often non-linear) process, in this sense they’re always healing together 🥹 here are some fics that came to mind, most are down & out Draco but not all of them. Excerpt:

“I like you without your facial hair, I can actually see your face.”

“It is my face. Dipping you now,” Harry smirks, dipping Draco backwards before pulling him upright, his left hand firmly placed on Draco’s lower back with his right hand tightly clasped in Draco’s. He’s just drunk enough to not give a flying fuck about the looks of surprise from some of the Daily Prophet employees as he dances with Draco. Harry wouldn’t even call what they were doing dancing, just a bunch of poorly executed twists, twirls, and dips around the dance floor as they laugh in one another’s face.

“Thanks for convincing me to come to this thing,” Draco says, smiling at him as they sway together.

“Don’t be silly. I’m sure it was Pansy having your bollocks in a vice-grip that made you come out tonight.”

“That too,” Draco chuckles. “I was unsure if I wanted to show my face in the Magical community in such a bold way, but being here with you makes the whole ordeal marginally better.”

“Glad to be of service,” Harry says affectionately before spinning Draco. He knows how important this decision was for Draco. He had vowed never to return to the Wizarding World, and now he was in the centre of Diagon Alley, quite literally surrounded by the media and people who would have spit in his face if they caught him strolling the streets during the day. Merlin, Draco was braver than he gives himself credit for.

When Harry received his invitation to Pansy’s New Years Eve party, he was surprised to find out that she had also extended an invite to nearly all of his Gryffindor friends, probably as a way to seal Ginny’s decision in coming. The party has been exciting and fun with Draco as his date for the night. “The next New Year’s Eve if neither one of us is with anybody, you got a date.”

“Deal,” Draco says. The pace of the music slows down and instead of pulling away, Draco wraps his arms around his neck. Harry’s heart pounds viciously and for a moment doesn’t know what to do with his hands. When he finally wraps his arms around Draco’s waist, the other man titters quietly to himself. “Well done, Potter,” Draco teases, pulling Harry closer to him as they sway to the music.  

Merlin. Draco feels so right in his arms. Harry inwardly gasps when Draco presses his cheek against his. Draco gives a pleasant sigh. “See, now we can dance cheek to cheek.”

“Mmm…” Harry says. He doesn’t trust his voice right now. They dance like this, cheek-to-cheek for a while. He doesn’t notice that he’s stroking Draco’s back until he stops because Draco slightly pulls back to stare into his eyes.

Harry’s about to do something — say something, or maybe, maybe kiss Draco — when someone shouts out in the crowd: “Hey everybody! One minute ‘til New Year!”

“Do you want to get some air?” Draco asks. The spell between them is broken.

“Yeah.”

As they exit the dance floor, Harry catches sight of Pansy making her way towards Ginny. Hermione and Ron are already snogging at a table, Luna and her boyfriend Rolf are still dancing, and Neville and Hannah are chatting away with Angelina and George.

Once outside, they stand close to one another on the cobblestones. Harry takes a moment to fully appreciate Draco awash in the bright streetlight. He’s insanely gorgeous in his form-fitting burgundy tuxedo unconventionally paired with a black roll neck, his long blond hair swept back from his face in an artfully messy half-up-half-down hairstyle. They can still hear the crowd behind them counting down. Harry’s surprised when he feels Draco’s warm hand close around his own. He glances down at their clasped hands before lifting a questioning gaze to Draco’s softly smiling face.

“TEN…NINE…”

“Thanks for being here for me this year, Harry.”

Oh. Oh. Oh. Harry’s brain stutters.

“EIGHT, SEVEN, SIX…”

Love for the other man flares through him.

Shit.

He’s in love with his best mate.

Hiii! Okay, so. full transparency, I may be conflating two fics. It was AO3, post-war, relatively long.

Unique Plot Points:

- Draco is living as a muggle and has many muggle friends he introduces Harry to (like there’s a house party/concert Harry comes to)

- Harry is promiscuous and noncommittal and Draco isn’t, so they never sleep with one another even though they are attracted/in love with one another.

- Draco eventually starts dating a rich man and lives in a penthouse. They break up and Harry comes to comfort him and sleeps with him, but treats Draco like a hook up which makes Draco upset.

- They stop talking and then there’s a big confession of love that happens and they get back together.
