thoughts from a rewatch: S02E08, "Man City," Ted, Dr. Sharon, and fear

@interropunct and I have been slowly working our way through a second viewing of Ted Lasso and I've been particularly interested in the relationship between Ted and Dr. Sharon.

Dealing with Dr. Sharon is when we see Ted at his meanest. He lashes out in a massive way that's an insult to Dr. Sharon as a person and to her profession, which she rightly calls him tf out for.

And then, after, we have "Man City," where they finally begin to connect.

My first watch of this, I didn't know what to make of the whole thing, because on paper it's not really great. Dr. Sharon winds up in the hospital after getting hit by a car. While concussed and then perhaps on painkillers, she calls Ted incessantly to basically shittalk him and insult him and sing about how infuriating he is.

Ted picks her up from the hospital and makes sure she gets home okay, all while informing her of the voicemails in an utterly sanguine cheerful manner. Something is undeniably different between them, and on first watch I didn't give it enough thought and landed on, "Ah, so now Ted feels like he has the upper hand so he's more comfortable," which isn't Fabulous but when we learn the sheer amount of horsefuckery with Dr. Jacob and Michelle, it's supremely understandable.

However, this time, we got right HERE

and i SMASHED the pause button and when, "Oh my gd, he's not afraid of her anymore. It's fear."

Ted's initial reaction to Dr. Sharon and how he panicked, insulted her, and fled, it wasn't born from a lack of respect and it wasn't from that stereotypical Midwestern disregard for mental health. Of course not, that's so entirely against Ted's entire philosophy.

Ted tells Trent flat out in S01E03 that he doesn't care about winning or losing, he cares about helping these young men be the best versions of themselves, and that bears out through the entire show.

Until Dr. Sharon arrives, and suddenly Ted isn't okay with making a helpful resource available to the team. He flat out tells Dr. Sharon he can handle Isaac's troubles, and when someone asks him how he's going to do that, Ted says he has no clue.

That is one hell of a cognitive dissonance. It's specifically therapy that Ted struggles with.

Until the voicemails. Until Dr. Sharon is an unprofessional jerkass to him. Instead of reacting with false apologies and diversions and giving her grace, Ted is actually more comfortable with her now. He's not afraid of her.

Now, the exact reason for that is probably a combination of many things. He knows she's fallible, he knows she finds him irritating, etc. But I think primarily: Ted always suspected that Dr. Jacob was manipulating him, always felt like he and Michelle were ganging up on Ted during the couple's counseling.

So it's a relief to find out that under the surface, Dr. Sharon doesn't want to hurt him or manipulate him. She just thinks he's an avoidant jackass who is a difficult project. Which is on some level true, so heck, she must be good at her job! It's no different than Ted thinking of Rebecca or Trent or Jamie as difficult projects he's got to figure out.

Speaking of.

When the disastrous post-match confrontation with James Tartt Sr happens, there is a gap in what Ted does and how he reacts.

With everything we know about Ted, with how fast Ted is to step in, to defend, to protect, to comfort his players and his people, it's extremely significant that he doesn't step in for Jamie.

It's a missing step. For Ted and his philosophy, it's a failure.

But it's a failure born from a frankly horrific trauma. Ted can't step in, can't make himself intervene, he fucking leaves the locker room, a move so staggeringly out of character...

because when Ted was sixteen, his father killed himself. And Ted was there to hear the bullet. He was the first to know. He was probably the first to see the body.

But he cannot stop and say, "Hey, everyone, I'm real sorry I missed the step here, I fully and wholly understand I was supposed to step forward here and comfort Jamie and reassure him, and I wanted to, but see the thing is when i was sixteen--"

He categorically cannot do that, holy shit.

So he goes and he calls Dr. Sharon and tells the correct person. He finally understands what she's here to do, how she is as passionate about helping people as Ted is, and she is equipped to help him with a trauma he's carried around for decades.

One thing I hate about Jurassic World youtube channels is when it comes to theorizing abt characters, THEY DONT KNOW HOW TO ACTUALLY AND PROPERLY ANALYZE. It’s like they never payed attention in english class 😭 esp when it comes to The Handler, because yes offence, just saying, their “character analysis” videos are absolute shit. I was yapping abt this early with @koi-fish-boy

What I mean is, instead of coming up with new theories, these “theorists” just take already existing theories, slap it into a video, add some other info that is not even considered a character analysis but just info thats RIGHT IN FRONT OF OUR FACES. The other worst part is, they never show any evidence to support their theories, they don’t make connections. They just go like “Oh The Handler blah blah creepy lady blah blah whats her deal? Blah oh shes probably part raptor or a clone blah blah blah k like and subscribe” GET OUT- 🗣️🗣️💥💥‼️‼️

I could debunk some of these theories right now even I am feeling THAT petty. “Brooklynn clone?” They don’t have the same facial structure, The Handler is 10x more paler, Brooklynn has a button nose while The Handler’s is straight, and have you taken into consideration that other blue eyed white ppl with freckles exist????? Brooklynn isnt the only white chick that exists 💀 “Dino x human hybrid?” this idea for a plot has been scrapped long ago. And even if she was a dino hybrid, she HAS to retain dino like features, like scales, vertical pupils, dino vocals, sharp teeth. NO, her having big eyes and pale skin DOES NOT = DINOSAUR FEATURES. Theres millions of people with big eyes and who are also sickly pale. “But she doesnt blink!” Yes tf she does I have the timestamps to prove it, she actually blinks A LOT considering the little screentime she has. “Robot??” We see her display humane emotions such as empathy in the final episode (I mean this theory itself has already been scrapped by countless ppl so 😼)

The problem here is that ppl dont reeeeealllllyyyy ANALYZE a character, they just observe the surface, find a couple of things here and there, and call it a day. They don’t use all of their senses when looking into a character, they only document what the naked eye can see. That is NOT what analyzation is about. Character analyzation is about digging DEEPER into the character, putting yourself in their POV, in their shoes, reading their facial expressions, their body language, spending hours playing back the same clips over and over again just to find new info, taking note of the dramatic lighting changes, the ambience, making connections, USING CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS TO UNBOX THE MYSTERYS OF SAID CHARACTER. Cmon guys did we learn nothing from Brooklynn??🤨🤨 like no joke me and @koi-fish-boy spent hours rewatching scenes with The Handler and found a BUNCH OF COOL NEW SHIT THAT NO ONE HASNT EVEN TALKED ABT YET.

People dont also seem to have enough balls to connect neuroscience to their theories, which is strange because incorporating psychology and the human brain, or any kind of science to a character analysis can rlly help with coming up with new theories. Why do you think MatPat’s theories were so good and interesting? It’s because he makes CONNECTIONS. He incorporates math, history, folklore, religion, and science into ALL OF HIS THEORIES. HE PUTS WORK INTO THEM. HE THINKS CRITICALLY.

All theories are valid, even the far-fetched ones, thats the whole point of a theory, its supposed to be crazy, but actually putting in the work to find evidence to support your theory WILL STRENGTHEN IT, and make it 100x more interesting. You can’t just introduce a theory without evidence to back it up, there needs to be at least 1 reason to even consider your theory plausible. Like the clone theory, I’m not entirely against it cuz cloning IS a thing in the JW universe, like that theory makes the most sense cuz its happened before, so why not again? I still think its absolutely crap, but I’ll admit, it makes sense. Why? Cause theres evidence to back it up.

House MD makes me absolutely FERAL.

For instance, I finished rewatching S3 E15, "Half-Wit", the one when House fakes cancer so he can get high (typical). And

AHHH

Everyone's response to House potentially dying is EVERYTHING. And displays both the characters and their character growth SO WELL.

Wilson, ofc, is offended that his best friend *cough* *lover* *cough* didn't say anything, and hid it. And something I think (and forgive me if this is not actually how it went down to everyone else, it's 1am and I have brainrot) is really interesting, is that beyond Wilson giving House shit for not saying anything, Wilson doesn't give any of the platitudes that everyone else gives. We don't see Wilson trying to "fix" anything or say, "House your dying, can we have an actual human connection for once?". No no, Wilson just lets him be.

Now, either Wilson is pissed and reeling from this news , and is just distancing himself (which tbh feels ooc, like House has crossed worse lines before, and Wilson deals with cancer everyday, idk).

OR you can look at the option of Wilson knows House well enough (and cancer, let's be real) that trying to fix it, won't change anything, that coming up to House and trying to "console" him won't do anything. House is House, and Wilson KNOWS THAT. Wilson knows that if House really and truly wants a conversation about it, or any comfort, House will just be like, " Yo, can we go get wasted?" and that's that.

AND THEN HIS FUCKING ANALYSIS AT THE END AND HIM FUCKING LAUGHING AT THE IRONY.

And Cuddy, I feel like, is the middle ground between how Wilson and the kids react. She doesn't go out of her way to say something, but in an almost hand-on-the- doorknob-as-I'm-leaving type way does she say something. AND THEN THEIR BANTER IN THE HALL IS FUCKING EVERYTHINGG. And her FUCKING smile as House grabs her ass (istg I can only say this in real action to this fucking show) but still dismissing him coming to the bedroom with her

Like both her and Wilson and obviously hurt, right, but they don't outright change their behavior toward House or anything, but they accept it (kind of) and don't go out of their way to change anything,

AND THEN THE KIDS' RESPONSES. ANHHH

I love Chase's moment. He's just like, "Dad, shut up and let me hug you" AND FUCKING STARTS CRYING

CHASE IS LITERALLY THE ONLY ONE WHO CRIES

He's like, "Goddammit, I'm going to lose two of my parentals to this cancerous bullshit. Tf."

AND HUGH LARUIE'S ACTING I CANT

YOU CAN SEE HOUSE REALIZING THAT, "oh shit, they really care and this is really going to hurt them" LIKE WHAT THE HELL. MY HEART, FUCK THIS SHOW WTH

And I love how Cameron is shown in this episode, over the first three seasons, we can see her kinda of coming to her own, and learning from House, so instead of like, backing down from helping House she just fucking kisses him so she can steal his blood. Like. YES CAMERON. GET IT.

AND AGAIN

HUGH LAURIE. YOU CAN SEE HOUSE'S HESITATION, WEIGHING THE PROS AND CONS BEFORE KSSING BACK.

And tbh I feel like House is low key proud of Cameron for a moment in a "she is taking after me" type way.

And Foreman trying not to care, but caring the whole time, and HIS FACE WHEN HES TELLING HOUSE HE DOESNT HAVE CANCER. LIKE. JXNKSCVJVXFBJKBFVSKJ

And I just love everyone's reaction five seconds later when they realize

"House is an addict. Right. Fucking this was a sham, fuck"

AND THEIR FACES ARE EVEYTHING

Cameron is crestfallen, outraged. Foreman is slightly pissed but completely nonplussed almost? Like a I should have expected this/this is such a House thing, which is why I dislike the man. And his sarcastic response is EVERYTHING And, Chase, oh Chase. He's so disbelieving and hurt. Like my baby I'm so sorry.

And House like really understanding how much this hurt them, and kinda of being a fucking TOTAL IDIOT and like slightly scared I feel but arrogant enough to just fucking like. Trying to blame so he doesn't feel guilty (he does) pushing them away so he doesn't have to face consequences (he's spiraling) and and after Wilson (finally) talks to him, having to stop and THINK about how fucking miserable is he really (he's such and idiot) and just AHHH

AND THEN HIM FUCKING GOING INTO THE RESTAURANT AT THE END?????? ITS A FUCKING CRIME THAT WE DON'T SEE THAT CONVERSATION BETWEEN HIM AND THEM. LIKE SIR, I WANT TO THIS POTENTIALLY EMOTIONALLY CHARGED MOMENT. LIKE

And honestly, Ilove how House interacts with the patient in the episode, it's on par with the boy who had autism earlier this season. Like the piano part is what really intrigues him, but still goes forth to give him his life back. Idk, just felt special.

I can't take all the credit, I have seen people theorize about Billy making up the road. With that in mind, during my rewatch, I just noticed all the clues staring at me. The ballad being written by Agatha though, and being a con to steal magic, that I come up with that on my own. I didn't know Nicholas was involved tho.

IMO, this is more proof of how well-written the show is. Being able to guess the twist upon rewatch shows that we had all the information. Everything was so well-thought-out and planned meticulously to end up on this reveal. So again, I can't take credit here, the honors go to the show director and all the cast who worked on this amazing series.

i rewatched s6 p2 earlier this week with my dad, and sorry i'm gonna ramble again because going from the frustrated scenes that lead to the locker room blowup -> the plane heart-to-heart with j.ohnny -> the 'you're a natural leader' convo with r.obby after he lands just feels SO clunky... i thought it was just because i had binged all the eps at like 2-3am that first night, but now i can tell there's at least one or two scenes in there that they cut for time. i'm not disagreeing with m.iguel's reaction to the 'you're my son, too' line because i know that's been something he's been needing to hear since after prom in s4, but the show insinuating that m.iguel's frustration is solely because j.ohnny has been favoring r.obby over him (i know whatever scene that was got cut for time bc ... vine vc bitch where) comes out of nowhere???

firstly because the 'support' j.ohnny gave r.obby didn't make it off the cutting room floor (i know he's not talking abt part 1 bc j.ohnny made a point to be unbiased and support m.iguel and r.obby evenly before the captain qualifier), but also because feeling ignored by j.ohnny was never even hinted to as a motive for the desperation m.iguel has with the captain spot in 6 part 1. he and r.obby had figured out their shit from that type of thing in s5 (another thing the writers tell instead of show but that's a rant for another time). his whole desperation for winning the taikai is that m.iguel thinks it's his only shot at swaying the stanford admissions board. he was giving d.emetri a run for his money in the 'shut tf up abt college' race in 6 part 1, and he was so preoccupied with his plan to get noticed and change the board's mind that he completely ignored and invalidated r.obby's feelings.

the main reason he's upset with j.ohnny - and with everything at that point - is that everything comes back to that lack of control he's felt on and off since season 3. j.ohnny just finished telling everyone that the results of the taikai could have them 'regretting everything for the rest of their lives' (get that '84 guilt out of here), right after telling m.iguel that his own victory on the mini platforms didn't mean shit (the only time where m.iguel did feel ignored by j.ohnny, and it wasn't to hype up r.obby bc j.ohnny sat there yelling at everyone in the locker room after), and that he the rest of the team were still going under. they're on the way back to los angeles because his mom got rushed to emergency surgery, another thing he has no control over. there's a couple lines from j.ohnny about 'not thinking like that' when j.ohnny's sharing his worry about not having control re: c.armen's situation, but i don't think that was stressed nearly enough to progress his narrative and show that correction. ideally, i think doubling down on that with a heart-to-heart with c.armen in the hospital about m.iguel fearing the risk of something happening to her again would have done that really well.

that mention of the real motive was also missing from his pep talk with r.obby after he gets back to barcelona, watered down to 'oh i was being an asshole sorry,' and i think it was a disservice to the bond they keep trying to say m.iguel and r.obby have had since s5. a lot of their 'fixing things' convos get watered down to the most basic shit, when the very core of their 5+ season conflict has always been abt miscommunication. they deserved a longer scene talking about both m.iguel and r.obby's frustrations before m.iguel started hyping him up, and i know they glossed over it because of time.

tldr: if i had a dollar for every time a character got cheated because of the short eps + cluttered character roster i'd have enough money to buy the show myself

I'm rewatching Good Omens S1 and with the context of the events of S2, I'm becoming increasingly convinced that Gabriel has had a bit of a (100% platonic, brotherly) soft spot for Aziraphale for awhile now.

He's just such a pompous ass that it comes across really condescending. Like Gabe thinks he's the cool older brother and is subtly pushing his awkward little brother to be less weird so that he doesn't have to be embarrassed about him.

"Why do you consume *that*?" = "Come on man, stop putting weird things in your mouth, it's embarrassing"

Also, is Gabriel quite as much of an idiot as we think? Or is he trying to use his influence to subtly get Aziraphale out of trouble? Like, "Yeah, sure Michael, they can come in any size. DONT WORRY ABOUT IT" Or "Oh, he gave us his word as an angel. Alright then that clears everything up. Let's go folks, nothing to see here!"

Why the "shut up and die" then? Don't forget that Aziraphale's fate was sealed and Crowley-as-Aziraphale was playing up Azi being nice right beforehand ("It was lovely knowing you all") and Gabe is just like, "Shut tf up and stop being sweet before you make me feel guilty about this you idiot."

Also, does he have more damning evidence about Aziraphale/Crowley that he's been sitting on? I mean, it's become a rumor that A/C are together romantically beyond just the whole saving-the-world-together but... is a rumor that Azi understands this whole love thing enough to risk your whole existence on? To show up at their door naked and vulnerable in the hopes that they will take you in and help you? I bet he saw something once at some point in history that convinced him. And maybe even assumes Aziraphale also considers gabriel and Aziraphale to be buds, just because he sees it that way.

I'm just saying, Jimbriel's "I love you" to Aziraphale didn't come out of nowhere. There had to be something that drew Gabriel to Aziraphale, even before the memory wipe. He was just realizing again why he had liked Aziraphale so much.

I’ve finally had the time to start reading through your big analysis and. Oh. My. God.

I’m gonna rant for a second so I’m like really sorry if this comes across as odd or smth BUT IM SO GENUINELY LIKE VIBRATING IN MY SEAT.

The way you put your words and thoughts together is so incredibly digestible, I’ve always loved wordy and long analysis and essays but because of my neurodivergence it is sometimes hard to keep attention on what I’m reading if the story or subject isn’t captivating to me. Which is something I genuinely worried about, I really wanted to read this analysis because I’ve been waiting for it for so long, but because of the fandom drama and stuff personally it’s been really hard for me to get really into Stranger Things media, wether it be fics or BTS pics or anything like that

That being said, this is the most excited I’ve felt about Stranger Things in so long, and I mean that so literally. I’ve been captivated by your words and thoughts the entire time, I haven’t been able to look away from it except for what I’m doing right now because I NEEDED you to know how much I’m enjoying it, you’re work is always so so amazing and I love all of it so much

I'm really really glad my writing is digestible and engaging. That's something I really worry about when I'm writing longer analyses, because honestly sometimes even I get a little lost when I'm mapping out all the webby connections the writers pack into ST/TFS.

I'm exactly the same, though, when it comes to reading about stuff I'm not interested in: it's like pulling teeth 😭 So it's a really really huge compliment to hear that my work made you excited about the source material again!! I'm just :> waowwwwww lsdkjfdslk <3

The fandom drama is such a turn-off, but I let the spite fuel my love for the source material that much more. Rewatching ST with a new frame of mind is something I've been meaning to do since about halfway through that analysis...and by god I'm going to do it eventually!! It’s been many years since I’ve watched the show, so I’m going to put a disclaimer on everything I’m recalling in this post by saying that I could be recalling incorrectly, but also I remember I specifically tried and FAILED to put my shipping goggles on for KOxBD when I did my tfp rewatch back in (oh lord) 2015 after not having watched the show since it aired. And I was only REAFFIRMED in my stance that: Oh. There’s nothing interesting here. They genuinely read as coworkers to me. There is no compatibility to expand upon that seems interesting. I do not get it and it does NOT compel me.

Knock Out as a character before Breakdown dies was presented as wholly selfish and self-interested. The way he is presented in fan works with Breakdown is almost always antithetical to that. One of the favorite KOxBD crumbs people I remembered people liking; the “this was so much easier with Breakdown around” line when Knock Out is trying to wax his back, read more to me about how Breakdown’s absence is an inconvenience to him. There didn't seem to be any deep affection there, no pinning - nothing really even hinting at anything more. Knock Out is a sultry character by nature but I swear he flirted more with Optimus than he did with Breakdown. And meanwhile Breakdown was hitting on Arachnid lmao. Which to be fair, I’m not going to pretend that a man hitting on a woman has stopped me from shipping them with another man, but again, there was nothing with his dynamic with Knock Out that provided anything interesting to expand upon. I recall him having next to no thoughts on it outside their battles. His somewhat affable demeanor when he talked to the Vehicons wasn’t even really seen in the show with Knock Out as far as I remember. He died before anything could even hope to be interesting with them.

And then MEANWHILE in fanon world, it feels like its yaoi clichés all the way down. Which makes complete sense if you believe there’s nothing interesting in their dynamic to start with, since yaoi clichés can fill in the pieces when you want to slam two hot guys together and stand in for their personalities.  Granted I haven’t bothered to read any fanfiction with them in the spotlight (that I remember) and the clichés I’m picking up were mostly gleaned through fanart, but it all goes back to there not being an interesting enough dynamic for me to want to read fanfic in the first place. Compare to my tfp underdog ship, Knock Out/Starscream where the KOxSS moments seem so plentiful and interesting. Type in “Knock Out Breakdown” into youtube. You get a video “Knock Out and Breakdown teaming up”, a five minute video where they hardly even talk to each other, with Knock Out giving Breakdown the FYI that he left a battle with all the gravitas of a coworker saying sorry that he’s leaving you on shift but he’s clocking out for his smoke break.  

But type in “Knock Out Starscream” and you get “knockout and starscream being disaster ‘friends’ for 11 minutes” (air quotes included) where they microaggress each other, scheme together, interact as doctor/patient, scheme some more, try to beat each other up, trade barbs non-stop, BUMBLE their way through fighting zombies, and betray each other all the time. It’s soooo much fun. And hell, this video has the best KOxBD moment as far as I’m concerned, with the whole “you’re no Breakdown” line when they’re having their moment hiding from the zombies. But that line, like most KOxBD, felt like a barely there conjecture within the show. I didn’t get to see how Breakdown compared to Starscream such that Knock Out would say a line like that. As far as I recall, even with my yaoi goggles on, Knock Out and Breakdown in the show barely DO anything together.

And in the end I’m mostly 🤷 about it too - except for SOMEHOW the ship is popular enough to be winning tf yaoi polls left and right, getting them in IDW as a real couple, getting people to fanon Wildbreak as their child because he kinda looks like them, and having people mention Knock Out’s name in relation to Earthspark!Breakdown even though ES!Breakdown feels more G1 inspired and has his GREAT thing with Bumblebee, and I’m just like. Enough. Be serious.

Last Movie/TV: The Wilds. one of those cancelled lesbian shows. unfortunate. it's not as good as Yellowjackets though. i think they spend too much time on everyone's backstories but they're honestly not that complex like half of season 1 is leah having a breakdown over that guy and they want to be like leah is an obsessive person but they only show the one thing like. her other obsessions are so much more interesting i don't care about mr pedophile writer guy i literally do not care. let her go insane she deserves it for being bisexual. the last movie is possibly blue beetle which was alright for an airplane movie, wish i could pause it though. why tf is it a channel? who put live channels on planes? who did that? you deserve SUFFERING. also, while i was writing this i realized i actually later watched the new percy jackson episode with my sister so that actually but i don't remember anything from the books and unfortunately the show is clearly directed towards the same age range as the original series and it's like. good for what it is but selfishly i wish it was cooler for me specifically. rick riordan is cool though

okay so cuz the episode just aired i cant get pictures and i know we might not ever get answers about this (cuz i dont think many fans care about this enough for any of the crew to notice and possibly answer this) but its on my brain and i just have to get it out and this is going to be the most unorganized rambly post of this now 3 post series on titans. 1st post here, 2nd post here.

okay so 1st off, at the end of the 2nd post i started to go off about how maybe king had two dads. one who was the Boiling Isles, and one who sealed the collector away. obviously i was wrong as they were confirmed to be the same dad. he could still technically have two dads but whatever.

ANYWAYS. so like. what the fuck is up with titans hands. was kings dad just making his appearance match kings more so luz would quickly make the connection (or he just wanted to have a more friendly appearance in general) but like. his skeleton has 4 fingers. there was so much focus on his hand in the scene. but when luz sees him in the in between he has two fingers like king.

but i still wonder if my sizeshifting theory could be right. cuz like. whats up with all the spiky protrusions on the arms and legs.

Just because they kissed doesn't mean they're not still an ace couple, if that is what you want them to be. Demisexuality is a part of that spectrum, and as a Demi myself, if I spent millions of years with my best friend, I would also eventually grow feelings for them, too. XD What does one do when they dont have the words to express how they feel? They turn to derastic measures, and this show definitely showed that act as a moment of desperation on Crowleys part, and it was, in some way, nerve wracking on both sides. I mean, Aziraphale was shocked, but Crowley was trying to use all the words he could muster, and it still wasn't enough, and Oh! The angst! It was quite wonderful!

Also, calling them Ace when being Ace is also a human construct makes it just as authentic as every other label does for them.

They're not repressed gays. They're not straight bros. I would even argue that they aren't even technically Ace. They're not human.

But it doesn't mean they can't experience those things.

They're them. 🌸 (we could have been....us.)

Here's the Hot take: I like to think that Aziraphale was mortified by the kiss (at first) but only because he felt disgusted with himself for actually.... maybe liking it to degree- combined with coming to the realization that, that moment between them actually fucking HAPPENED- and if any other aces are out there with a religious childhood like me, it is possible that some (not all) of your aceness could come from some religious trauama that you might not have come to terms with, yet. So when thinking about it in this light, Aziraphle has some real soul searching to do.

Azi is also in an abusive relationship with the "family" of angels - we all know that. He has been ignored and unloved by them for so long that the comfort of them starting to "care" made him want to believe that the "good" side was finally starting to be good. He wanted to believe that for a moment, things were actually going to work for the two of them.

That's how it feels when there is a group that calls themselves your family are willing to "accept you," but you have to change aspects of who you are in order to go with them. Crowley saw this and had the tremendous courage to lay out all of his emotions on the table. He isn't going to compromise who he is, and he is begging that Aziraphale does the same. Quite the human reaction, right? It makes sense that he would experience human emotion since he had a hand in helping create the bloody universe, right down to creating light. God is love. Love is light. Let there be light. Let there be love. Love is also a human term, so it's no wonder that the creator of such splendor (Crowley) would feel the emotions they themselves had a hand in creating -- and then to remember that Aziraphale was RIGHT THERE when it was created; he helped create it, AND he also had a hand in creating humans with God -- they BOTH have literally had a hand in creating... THIS! It's all come to THIS...

...and now Aziraphale has to come to terms with his own emotions and figure out what tf he is going to do now.

(I also really, really like the theory someone came up with where Aziraphale switched bodies with Crowley when they kissed to have Crowley go up to Heaven in his place, and after rewatching the scene...... and watching Michael Sheen's face..... I dunno man... but theories are just theories.)

We know they love each other, and we know that Neil wants there to be a happy ending for them as well. It's a slow burn for the ages and it has me HOOKED!

So, just enjoy the beautiful fanfiction-y season we got, go look up some other fix-it fanfiction and fanart to cope, and go do what you can to help this strike finally end with a writers victory so they can finish what they started! 💖

S1E1 commentary cuz why tf not

okay who fucking knows if I'll keep up with this but I want to try it.

Season 1 is one of my absolute favorites, I think the storytelling is exceptional and it really set the foundation for the rest of the show. I've rewatched this so many times because I love it to death. I mean, right from the beginning. That intro sticks in people's heads. It's iconic. We see the flash running impossibly fast, and then cut to barry running pathetically slow. It's perfect.

The characterization of Barry Allen is subtle and immediate. We immediately get to see him interact with his coworkers, his superiors, in a way that shows his personality perfectly. He's clumsy, but brilliant enough to be kept around. He's a hard worker when he's not totally distracted. He's also a little bit goofy.

There's also the interaction between Iris and him in the lab where he tells her she looks amazing and for like half a second he has this disappointed look on his face that tells the audience everything they need to know and it's really a testament to Grant Gustins talent that we could get that information about their relationship in like two seconds.

Then of course we get Wellses speech, which I feel needs to commentary. We also get to watch our protagonist, our hero, fail to stop a crime. He gets his ass kicked and it's fun! Because we know what happens next, or most of us do.

It really amazes me how much of the storytelling in this show is dead silent. Barry walking around his lab, alone, listening to the news, looking at his murder mystery board, only for lightning to strike. It's the night that changes his life but it seems so innocuous.

And then we meet Caitlyn/Cisco who I immediately fall in love with because he's playing Lady Gaga for that guy in a coma that's just around?? for months??

And then when Barry's discovering his powers and he just starts running super fast through the city and crashes into some van? Not to mention: there is canonically a random laundry guy who knows who the Flash is. He saw Barry run and he saw his face. Really the most goated character because he doesn't say shit.

Also, there's the

it's something that definitely should make me laugh but I always have a little chuckle at it because it's like Barry, you dumbass.

I really love the music that's playing when Mardon shows Barry his powers.

Joe West ranting about how Henry killed Nora because he's so certain that nobody has any weird magical powers is so painful to watch sometimes, especially when Eddie comes up and confirms Mardon's alive immediately afterward. Yikes.

and everyone smiling in the control room once mardon's dead. beautiful.

joe, with tears in his eyes, apologizing for not believing Barry for all those years, truly breaks my heart. Joe West, dadliest of dads. The conversation between Barry and Henry, too, is completely heartbreaking. Henry saying that Barry needs to stop worrying about him and live. It's beautiful.

"I've made some new friends" YEAH YOU HAVE BARRY.

and of course we end on the obligatory 'harrison wells is not who he seems' scene. this whole season is basically this happening. we also get our first glimpse of THE newspaper. this episode is an incredible start to an incredible season.

top 10 wlw ships of all time??

All time?? Ahh, good question Anon. I'm sure there's a more objective way to answer this and I could maybe even do a top 10 in terms of milestones in representation but instead, today, this is just going to be my personal list based on my faves.

First thing to know is that I'm actually not that big of a shipper and kinda go all or nothing. Meaning, if I list more than three there's going to be a huge difference in terms of my devotion between the first half and the second half, and for that purpose I'm going to divide this into subcategories.

The top 3 - ride or die, they have my heart ships

1. Korra and Asami, The Legend of Korra

Let’s not even get started on what the Avatar universe means to me and Korrasami in particular because I will cry. They’re comfortably my OTP, if we take One True Pairing seriously and I’ll never forget December 19th 2014.

2. Bubblegum and Marceline, Adventure Time

Dare I say, the OGs? Two years before Korrasami walked off into that sunset I became obsessed with a cartoon vampire and her ex-gf, a despotic piece of gum. Archaeologists will find my many Bubbline posts from before they became canon and see how I was foaming at the mouth trying to tell everyone exactly what the subtext implied. But it’s not just that sense of vindication that will always, always make them so special to me.

3. Brittany and Santana, Glee

Shocker! Lmao, I mean, it is kind of strange that they’re so high because Glee has by far the weakest writing out of my favourite shows and Brittana was treated with the least respect. But, you know, I’m still hooked and I still have a deep love for Brittana’s story. They’re not a pairing I grew up with but one I’m glad I gave a chance to in my twenties. Enough said since I regularly go on about them.

Moving to top 5 - think less about them now but hold dear

4. Laura and Carmilla, Carmilla: The Series

Ahh, Hollstein. I got into Carmilla right after LoK concluded and Hollstein was a milestone couple in terms of my relationship to representation. This little web series created a duo of incredibly complex characters who had an even more complex relationship and one I cherished so, so much. I still think their writing holds up, though I haven’t rewatched in a while. Once upon a time I went as hard for them as the top three, it’s just been a while and Carmilla isn’t a forever fandom for me in the same way Avatar is. Precious memories though.

5. Catra and Adora, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power

Being as into SPOP as I ended up after season 5 dropped caught me by surprise but it was a very, very solid show and presented a very beautiful story between Catra and Adora. Again, very layered, very complex, very well-written and not the least well (voice) acted. Catradora made me feel so deeply about a ship after quite a while so they deserve to be in the top 5.

Next 2 - less intense but still active shipping

6. Luz and Amity, The Owl House

Continuing my trend of cartoon gfs, I was so happy to watch The Owl House and see how far we’ve come with kids’ shows. Their relationship is allowed to exist well before the finale and it’s so cute and they’re such interesting characters. I admit, I’m a bit behind on TOH at the moment but I’ll catch up by the time season 3 comes out. They’re not quite the same as other animated couples in terms of how personally atteched I am but I’m over the moon about Lumity’s mere existence.

7. Nico and Karolina, Marvel’s Runaways

Deanoru mostly had a hold on me when I first watched the first two seasons and it never crossed into a more intense love for them, but I still really dig the story despite the show’s shortcomings and the premature end. I feel like they got a good enough ending and were treated with respect as a couple. And, you know, that whole sun and moon dynamic? Sign me tf up.

Bottom 3 - still good! just more casual

8. Rachel and Chloe, Life Is Strange: Before the Storm

I was very much anything but chill about Amberprice when I was first playing BtS but in retrospect, and having replayed the game that had more to do with my love for Rachel Amber rather than the pairing. They still made it to the list because they made me feel things in a way most wlw ships in media I casually enjoy don’t. And that whole “run away with me” scene in the second episode? My god. Their tragedy? Fuck I’m a sucker for that.

9. Casey and Izzie, Atyical

I’d say Atypical is by far the show I consumed the most casually out of all the ones listed but Cazzie were such a well-handled couple with adorable and very real scenes. Wlw ships in Netflix shows can feel kinda... forced and like they were just thrown in, but I thought Izzie’s introduction and their evolution felt organic and I enjoyed watching it unfold. They’re top tier, even if they don’t rank higher for me because of personal involvement.

10. Nicole and Waverly, Wynonna Earp

I’ll be honest, there are a couple of ships that could interchangeably place 10th but I think the beginning of Wynonna Earp and Wayhaught’s relationship caught that good time in wlw fandom so I consider them special enough to make the list. My attachment to them is unique to this experience of having watched it unfold and the fact that they were a shining light of hope after everything went down in 2016. Rather than treat it casually, the creators doubled down on Wayhaught’s story and importance and that had an impact. Good show, good ship.

Well, I hope a list like this is more or less what you meant! I’d be curious to hear others’ faves; this is really nostalgic for me for various reasons haha.

As an adult in her mid 20s, I realise now how toxic Seddie was. They really were in different places. And Dan romanticised a bully and a victim. And continued the violence after hinting they might like each other. Had it been like Devi and Ben or even Jade and Tori, Seddie would've been okay. Just bickering. But there was real physical abuse like wtf?

And I think Seddie was handled horribly. Where they couldn't go a minute without arguing. Like the show said, they had a connection but that's not enough for a relationship. I was pissed at that episode but now I understand it. Sam was brutal and she needed to grow tf up and be less aggressive before she could become a gf to anyone. No wonder Jenette hated her character. Blonde boss trope was we needed back then. But her character Sam was awful.

Fanfic writers wrote seddie correctly. Bickering idiots who later end up falling in love and treating each other right. But the original iCarly, the Seddie arc was despicable. I actually have to skip it when I rewatch iCarly. Makes me hate both Sam and Freddie. Poor Gibby!

Looking back, I now realise and support that Creddie was meant to be. But Carly was too obsessed with hot boys to notice the good guy right in front of her. And Freddie was going from one toxic relationship to the next. He needed to become more assertive and stop taking shit from women.

They needed to grow up. And correct their flaws before they could be in a relationship with each other. They need to fall in love again once they reach adulthood. But I feel like Miranda and Nathan don't have much romantic chemistry as Jeanette and Nathan. I think a lot of people liked seddie because of the chemistry. But if it was played by different people, maybe Seddie wouldn't have taken over the Internet in 2012. I love Creddie but the actors need to establish more chemistry.

Jori on the other hand....perfect enemies to lovers. Except when Jade tried to bury her and almost killed her by intentionally misplacing her blood and sending her bush daisies which she was allergic to. So I'll just erase those moments on the count that Dan was too sick to write those. It's not funny to physically harm someone by sending them to hospital. Had Victorious aired now, on a different channel, Jori would be canon.

As a kid, I loved Seddie and Bade. Two of the most toxic relationships on children's television. But as an adult, I ship Creddie and Jori. Because I can finally understand the value of healthy relationships.
