byler can't be unrequited

the fact that there has been no content makes it really easy to get doubtful about what we already know to be true. here is why byler being unrequited is almost impossible if the duffers are even a fraction as talented as we think they are.

we have ALREADY got the unrequited arc in stranger things. more than once!!!! dustin liked max and robin liked tammy thompson. reusing this storyline for will (albeit on a much grander, heartbreaking scale) would be extremely lazy and unfulfilling. if will were to move on from mike and have another boyfriend by the end of the series, that would literally just be a direct copy and paste of robin's (and dustin's?) arc.

how satisfying is it to mirror the only two queer characters storyline's almost 1:1?

the main argument we see of ignorant ga members: "it was the 80s, mike not liking will back is realistic and would help older queer people feel represented on screen."

sure... but robin's crush on tammy has already fulfilled that relatable storyline. the sheer impact of "i wanted her to look at me" and robin's coming out scene shouldn't be understated. personally, i was only a confused kid watching that scene for the first time, but in that moment, i felt understand in ways that i wasn't even aware of. i've heard similar experiences with young and older queer people (namely lesbians) while watching that scene. the heartbreak was real.

however, by season 4, robin conceded to the fact that, okay maybe tammy isn't that great.

meanwhile will is literally just beginning to understand how in love with mike he is. mike makes him feel better for being different. this isn't just someone that will saw in passing at school. he is not going to move on from mike after loving him for as long as we've known them, either. imagining will undergoing the level of devastation associated with unrequited feelings when he's this in love with mike feels cruel. advancing the supernatural plot or his "coming of age" arc would not be enough to justify the level of suffering he would face.

queer people felt robin's pain, but the straight ga is fine with putting will through the same thing on steroids. the way the duffers talk about will's character makes me confident that they would handle his story with more care than that.

the unrequited pattern we've seen in the show is:

dustin: likes max -> max likes someone else -> starts dating suzie

robin: likes tammy -> tammy likes someone else -> starts dating vickie (in s5)

is this really something we need to see a third time? wouldn't the right time to give will a neat and easy new love interest be when he moved to california?

the duffers want the characters to have their perfect endings, even if they are shocking.

after being targeted and heartbroken for pretty much the whole series, is being alone or with some random side character at the last minute will's perfect ending?

So that’s it. The endgame is set.

Dylan G is gone. Miss Huang is gone. Irving is gone. Milchick snapped (a little) but hasn’t been completely radicalized.

Every other storyline has seemingly been wrapped up . . . except for the big one.

The Mark/Helly/Gemma dilemma.

Helly is the only one left fighting for her friends and the truth at Lumon now. Everyone else she has depended on to back her up has left. They’re gone.

The appearance of her father on the severed floor is catastrophically bad news. “You tricked me, my Helly”, bro what the fuck does that mean. Why did he call her that. It’s a level of familiarity that suggests something sinister and I realize there’s a whole new angle on that messed up relationship that we’re just being shown.

Helly is in big trouble. No doubt about it. Curious to see what punishment awaits her.

And Gemma, my GOD. Seeing her hunched in that chair, somehow even more beaten down and quiet than how she was in 2x07. But she’s still alive! I am taking this win, god damn it! Hang in there, Mark is coming (please for the love of God, LOCK IN MARK).

Mark, Devon, and Cobel should prove to be a match made in hell. Mark’s not wrong to be distrustful of her but Devon, as always, is right: they need to do as Cobel says because this is for Gemma. So glad she’s here to keep Mark in line and remind him who’s at stake.

So - innie Mark and outie Mark are finally going to talk. This conversation is going to be an intense one, I expect with both Marks going to bat about the agonizing decisions before them. Innie Mark is surely not going to be happy about the whole reintegration choice and Cobel, as I theorized before, probably has her own designs for Helly.

This will probably lead to a conflict for both Marks. Outie Mark is solely focused on getting Gemma out, whereas innie Mark does not want to do it at the expense of Helly’s life (at least that’s my theory).

(I suspect the fandom is going to be extremely normal about this conversation and be impartial.) But, from what I’ve heard, both Marks argue with great passion and there’s no clear winner - as it should be.

It’s my belief that Devon will be the deciding vote in whatever plan they come up with. Again, I’m so glad she’s there. Mark needs someone to watch his back and remind him that all of this is for Gemma. Innie Mark has every right to be pissed, though.

Decisions, decisions. Men plan; fate laughs.

All bets are off from here on out. I find it laughably hilarious that, yes, the show isn’t about shipping yet here we are: a man, caught between two great loves, forced to make a decision on which to save. Oh, we have to laugh otherwise we’d go mad.

At this point, I need the following to happen in the finale:

1. Gemma lives and escapes Lumon.

2. Dr. Mauer dies (preferably by Gemma’s hand).

3. Outie Mark and Gemma reunion scene. We need this. Has to happen. Non-negotiable.

4. Devon and Gemma reunion scene. Those women are sisters. They both deserve it.

So many more thoughts but I’m sure smarter people here will articulate it better on their own posts. I’m just gonna enjoy this break before the finale.

And don’t forget. First day of spring next week. Same day as the season finale. Take that as you will.

I'm glad to see we agree hahaha. To be honest... I try to take into account that I do not know Tim Minear and hence, do not know how his mind works or the way he figures out a season. But it feels like he gets obsessed with one idea and then figures how to work everything else around it. And if something in that process feels forced, or out of character, eh, he doesn't mind that much.

It is very much my impression and not necessarily the truth, but it is there. And I don't know if that speaks highly of him as a showrunner, yk?

Bucktommy indeed fell into their laps in what is, quite possibly, the biggest strike of luck they've had when it comes to 911. They literally struck gold and hit a home run without even trying to (that hard, that is). Any other showrunner would be on their knees thanking the showrunner Gods because? Amazing storytelling, incredible chemistry between the actors (with no chemistry read! which is insane), a character that fits perfectly in the story and universe (not an easy feat eight seasons in), and not to mention the whole invisible string theory.

They literally won the lottery.

That's why so many people (including me) will not understand if this truly is the end for Bucktommy, because it simply doesn't make sense to finally have a LI that works for Buck and go... hehe nevermind, it's better if we keep him going in circles forever.

Let's hope this half of the season brings us bucktommy back and shows us Tim indeed have a plan. Low hopes for that, but never non-existent.

Love and Deepspace Evol Management Tier List

okay so, love and deepspace has been occupying my thoughts ever since i got back into the game after about a year

i've been looking into more of each LI's management of their respective evols from their myths/main storyline, anecdotes, etc and i think i can safely rank them from best to worst evol management

before i continue, this is just my personal listings for all the LI's evol control. if you have a different take on this theory, please feel free to comment/reblog with your own thoughts! i'm curious on what you all have to say about it :D

ALSO SPOILERS FOR WHOMEVER HASN'T SEEN THE MYTHS/MAIN STORYLINE!!!

first, at the very bottom of the list:

Zayne:

(now hear me out-)

we all have seen him as Foreseer, right? a demi-god who was gifted god-like powers by Astra to carry out his rule.

he defied Astra ONCE by looking into the MC's fate, which was intertwined with his own, and he was punished by his own ice abilities. and it caused him an incredible amount of pain.

in the current timeline, whenever Zayne overuses his evol, his arm and part of his face become encased with ice and frost, which causes him partial pain as well as temporary immobilization of whichever arm.

we can also see scarring on both of his arms from the aftermath of this over-usage. in hindsight, he's still cursed with this instability and there's essentially nothing he can do about it.

okay, let's move on to the next one before i start sobbing-

Xavier:

now, we all have seen his exceptional skills with a sword combined with his light evol, but he doesn't seem to be in complete control of it in terms of his full strength.

remember our first meeting with Xavier? when he shot up to protect MC from a few wanderers, there looked to be some form of a digitized collar around his neck which turned red before ending the wanderer.

to also factor in that he's from the future, so he's already quite limited with how much of his power he can utilize without it messing with the entire timeline.

but, i think in a separate memory of his (not sure of the name, please let me know!), he mentioned something about his "last 214th spring", which i believe meant that he was growing weaker from his future self remaining in the past for so long.

now, i'm unsure as to why he supposedly betrayed MC, but during the kindled scene of the memory, he seemed to be either in a hazed state or partially possessed by his evol.

he was mumbling to himself about "a place that uses to survive doesn't deserve to exist", and only when MC resonated with Xavier did his evol finally subside.

so yeah, Xavier definitely has potential in unleashing his full power, but he remains incredibly restricted due to his position in time.

now, for one that balances the table just right.

Rafayel:

i feel like Rafayel is a perfect balance of the scale. he shows incredible skill over the flow of his evol.

he's able to fully utilize his evol while in combat or even in mundane situations. we see that he's able to complete darken a fully candlelit room with a simple flick of his wrist and vice versa.

along with his fire evol comes his sea god abilities.

while we haven't really seen much of his sea god powers in the main storyline (and admittedly in his myth story), i'm willing to assume that there's a lot of potential with this form that Rafayel hasn't had the time to dive into.

with the ocean essentially becoming a desert, he might never learn how to hone into that form's true power.

but, from what we can see from the gameplay, he shows the same level of mastery to that of his evol. i would love to see him use both of his powers further down the story. however, all we can really do is speculate until it happens..

okay, the next two LI's truly had me struggling where to place who because these two both show incredibly mastery of their evols..

but, i have to place them somewhere, and here's what i have.

Sylus:

okay okay wait, i can explain this one-

now, we all know that Sylus was a dragon fiend in his myth story (i almost lost it while watching through the memory ;-;), but when we see him in the current storyline, he seems to be fully aware of his previous life as a dragon.

so because of that heritage, along with his energy evol, he's got vast mastery of his abilities, and to list a few of them:

he can materialize a fully loaded gun with just a simple thought, is able to lift up and immobilize several individuals with a wave of his hand, teleportation, some form of memory projection (when they first met, Sylus began to use his right eye to project his memories into MC, causing her to gain a headache in the process), immortality for obvious reasons and perhaps many more we don't know about.

hell, some could say he reached his full potential, but i believe there could still be room for him to grow stronger, so for now, he's ranked 2nd here

now, for number one...our newly added LI;

Caleb:

i think we can all agree that anyone with the ability to manipulate one's gravity is incredibly powerful...and dangerous.

Caleb fits both categories.

first of all, he's shown complete mastery over his evol. he nearly includes it in mundane life, he also heavily includes it during gameplay (which i find absolutely incredible and aesthetically pleasing).

Caleb even uses his evol to essentially immobilize someone either by a limb or their entire body.

so, i was curious about him so i went through his character anecdotes and i noticed something interesting in one of the sections...

while he was training to become a pilot, there was mentions about a mental health assessment they all took and...Caleb was recommended to some psychological evaluations.

now, this might be me speculating a bit too hard into things, but the fact that he can basically generate an entire black hole...that truly frightened and enlightened me about how that happened..

now, i might have 2 theories on that; he either gained the ability when he was receiving that upgrade, or maybe from how mentally unstable he grew, it conjured up into the ability to create a black hole at will.

so, in conclusion, Caleb is not only an individual with an equally powerful evol, but due to his poor mental health, it essentially turned him into a lethal one-man army.

imagine a 1v4 with Caleb and the others...that sure sounds like a battle to behold...but i will admit it'll make me worried just how far they'll all push themselves...

I'm frothing to talk more about this so I'm pinning my sights on YOU @tempusedax-rerum I see where you're going with it, and I agree, manipulation and the illusion of choice play big parts in Ford's life. This brings me to a point I alluded to but did not include in the original post because I wasn't sure about it then, but I think it's right to bring it up in response here.

I think that, despite everything, Bill is actually probably aligned to the Web.

I know I called him a manifestation of the Eye before, but that's just because of his monster design, I admit. It's incorrect to categorize him as just a monster though, as he is a fully fleshed out character and person on par with any of the other more human characters in the show, and so he SHOULD be categorized based on character, not design. Bill is one of- if not THE- biggest manipulators in the show, and he doesn't actually really display many eye hallmarks? Not the way Ford and Dipper do. Perhaps his past with Euclydia, trying to show everyone the stars that only he could see, but current Bill? He has a goal to open a rift in spacetime to allow monsters to get through it. That is. Basically exactly what the canon Web wanted in TMA lmao.

I actually don't think Bill is some master manipulator, I think he only has a slightly above average amount of skill in that department, but he does use it effectively and OFTEN, and he uses it to achieve his personal goals. I really think Bill is most closely aligned to the Web, specifically as an actor for it, if not a full avatar or manifestation.

Now, Ford.

Ford is depicted in tbob hanging by literal puppet strings like a marionette. He was repeatedly possessed by Bill, piloted by him and advised by him. Toward the end, after the betrayal, that possession goes full horror show, physically harming him and threatening him with harm to try to scare him into cooperating again. And even when he's awake, Ford's fear of Bill and what he could do when possessing him dictate his actions and spur his paranoia. You could argue he's less afraid of his knowledge being taken here than he is of his body being taken and used to enact Bill's plans. Puppetry, being an unknowing pawn, and having your free will taken away (if it was ever truly there at all) are all very very webby.

Which brings us to a discussion of story meta and how that will very often impact tma fear assignments in mystery stories.

The web and the eye are metatextually representations of a storyline and its audience. It's not a coincidence that Jon was an avatar of the eye as the story's main character (and thus the audience's POV character and narrator) and that he was the target of the webs master plan. A storyline drags characters along a path completely hidden to them, but mostly set in stone from the start, and the audience soaks that shit up, ravenous, seeing and understanding more than the characters ever could, by virtue of being outside observers. Jon's manipulation by the web is just the main character being manipulated by the narrative. They're barely even parallel, they're just the same line lol.

And that's exactly what happens between Ford and Bill too, and I don't think its coincidental, I think it's just a symptom of how stories and characters work. Obviously Ford's not the main character of the show, but he is the main character of the story of him and Bill, of the story of how the portal got built in the first place. As that main character, he's our view into the happenings of the world, and the reason he's our POV and not some other character is because Ford is so eye-coded (seeking knowledge, curious, explorative.) Eye traits make for a good protagonist because they push the story forward. Web traits similarly make for a good endgame antagonist/antagonistic force, because they manipulate the narrative into something the audience can be entertained by (by hiding information until it is revealed, actually structuring the story as a STORY rather than just an info dump) and so it's similarly no surprise that Bill is our character for that role, because he exhibits manipulative behavior and shit. Or, even, it's no surprise Bill is manipulative and crafty, since he's in that story role. You get what I'm saying?

Ford and Bill look like an eye/web duo very similar to the one we get in canon tma. The web manipulating the eye for its own gain, because for as much as the eye can observe, it can't ever truly understand its circumstances. The eye is a perfect pawn for the web. Ford is a perfect pawn for Bill. Bill is practically omniscient, and knew wtf was going on the whole time because he was orchestrating it all. Ford, in my opinion, is still a student of the eye, rather than the web, because he seeks to know, and record, and learn, and see. He wanted to achieve greatness and unlock the mystery of gravity falls and build that portal because he wanted to expand humanity's understanding, AND he wanted to be the famous historical figure who did it (all eyes on him. Recognition.) He is manipulated by the web, marked by the web, the same exact way as Jon. Jon is undeniably Eye, and so is Ford. They are just extremely hopelessly interconnected with the web as well, because that's how story works, but that does not make them representations of it. Simply victims.

gravity falls tma fears?

Mabel - Forsaken She's so impossible to give a fear to imo but just going by what she's afraid of it'd certainly be the lonely, given her love of her family and want to make friends and find romance the second she sets foot in Gravity Falls, and her subsequent fear of losing all of that at the end of summer. Also I call it forsaken for her specifically because her fear is of being forsaken specifically, you feel? A fear of abandonment. I also think there's a good argument for her imprisonment in Mabel land to have been very lonely-coded too. (Something about being trapped in a dream-like bubble that does all it can to keep you there, away from your actual loved ones, content with just your imaginations projection of them for company. They can't hurt you if they're not really there.)

Stan - The Stranger Stan is actually a perfect avatar of the stranger it makes me insane. He literally scared the main characters when they found out he wasn't Stanford Pines by finding all of his fake IDs, like come ON. A con man with an ever changing identity showing up in your town and fucking you over, whats not to love? The stranger loves him, he gives up his entire self MULTIPLE TIMES in his life/the show! Not just when he's on the run, all of his fake IDs and different names, the different men he's been, but him becoming Stanford. He killed himself to become a weird, off-putting, not-quite-right version of his brother instead, and then at the end he's more than happy to give up his entire mind and sense of self to kill Bill. This man has no attachments to his identity as Stanley, and frankly the symbolic death he went through with the whole car crash thing works really well as an actual avatar change death. Now, certainly, Stan is much more afraid of the lonely, that's what kicked off his whole... everything. Same as Mabel, he didn't want his brother to leave him, didn't want to be left alone. But that's just the thing, in order to escape being preyed upon by the lonely, he ran to the stranger.

Stanford - The Eye Obviously. Lol. But not like, ONLY because of his connection to the literal eye of providence symbol, he IS a knowledge seeker and always has been. He's not just naturally smart, he actively loves learning and meticulously preserves all of that new information in his research journals. He's a perfect example of "needing to know, even if the information might kill you." Example: Chasing dangerous anomalies. Example: Reading the sketchy inscription on the cave wall that told you NOT to read it because it would bring about your doom. I do specify The Eye for Ford because of Bill though, seeing as (despite arguments for Bills story and personality being able to point him to other fears) Ford is connected to a very literal and obvious representation of The Eye- one who easily manipulates him because for all that Ford can see, for all that he seeks knowledge and understanding, he can never truly see past his own perception. Ford likes to See, and Ford ends up being VERY seen, both by his muse and by his nephew, obsessively consuming his journals and everything they reveal about Ford's life.

Fiddleford - The Spiral He was a man driven to madness by his own fear. He goes after Ford in the list because Ford does brush up against the spiral during his paranoia era, but McGucket lives and embodies it much more. Fidd quite literally seemed to have a problem with spiraling during his anxiety attacks, it can be assumed that he struggled with controlling his own thoughts and was easily swept up into his fears and taken away by them. And of course, his solution to this spiraling, the memory gun, only serves to damage his mind more, leading him even farther into his own paranoia era, until it goes too far and he loses himself entirely. He's pretty different from the canon TMA representations of the spiral as far as I can see, but I personally think he's a fitting portrayal despite that? I'm not sure he genuinely fears not being able to trust his own mind? But there's an argument that just like Stan, he runs into the arms of the spiral to escape the eye.

Dipper - Beholding Where Ford is a peak knowledge seeker in terms of his own learning, Dipper is a perfect audience. Dipper is a knowledge seeker, just like Ford, but more than being bookish, it makes him a big fan of mysteries and stories. Dipper is obsessive about Ford's journals, hooked by all of the hidden information not only about Gravity Falls, but about the elusive author himself. And like his uncle, Dipper is more than willing to get himself into danger to learn and reveal the truth. From being convinced using a real monster as a mystery shack attraction would be better, to making a deal with Bill so he can access the laptop, Dippers thirst for understanding is what gets him and his sister into all of the shenanigans that make up the series. And in true beholding fashion, he sees everything, gets every piece of information he can, but can never truly connect it all. Can see but can't understand. He's certainly not afraid of knowledge, he's compelled by it, and if he's not careful he could very easily slip into serving the eye and becoming a real beholder for it.

Soos - The Lonely Blendins Game really did a lot for our understanding of Soos and his whole deal. A boy with a deadbeat absent father who he wants nothing more than to get to know, a man who maybe doesn't really have any friends? Can't seem to connect with people his age, Soos is a lonely guy, straight up. Stan hiring him at the mystery shack was one of the greatest things that could have happened for him, I am a big enjoyer of Soos seeing Stan as a sort of father figure, and I am always touched by his love for Dipper and Mabel, specifically in Not What He Seems when he prioritizes the kids OVER Stan! He has a lot of heart, but seems to be chronically alone, the only guy his age around the main characters, just reaching out desperately for connection. God bless Melody comes into the picture eventually, probably eliminating his prey status for the lonely. Again, like Mabel, he is moreso afraid of the lonely than a representation or avatar of it. And I chose the Lonely title for him because where Mabel is afraid of abandonment via specific circumstances, I think Soos is more just generally lonely in his life and in the show. He's one of a kind, and that sorta isolates him.

I'm curious,

If an Fairy changes court, like Upper(Fairy) to Circuit(Pixie), what happens to the Lower court(Anti-fairy) counterpart?

Do they just cease to exist? Will they come back if the change is reversed? Will they have any idea of what happened?

In addition to that, does the Leisure court(specialty fairies) have a Lower court counterpart, or is it just the Upper court that has that?

And if it's only the upper court that has that, why only them?

Besides Timmy, Pixies and Leisure fairies actually can't change courts! They're stuck the way they're born because they technically lack a living counterpart!

Leisure Fairies are bound to their specialty, while Pixies are bound to their work. But Uppers and Lowers are bound to each other, which is why they can swap places. If a fairy's counterpart dies or disappears, so does the original and vis-versa.

The only exception to this rule is if the "Binding" of the fairies are changed before the counterpart dies.

Additional fun fact! There's technically 4 Fairy "realms". They're stacked on top of each other, and it's progressively harder to get to each one the higher they are (Only Leisure Fairies can access ""Olympus"", for example). They have official names but nobody bothers to use them.

Guh… the new Wifies and Kenadian videos are super good, it was such a pleasant surprise watching everything develop into a story. Seeing Kenadian in the background of Wifies’ video for a fraction of a second confused me so much!! I have no idea how I even noticed him!

If you could have any job what would it be? I actually want to open a restaurant for those who don’t have money, or go help others in need, like I wouldn’t call it a job but I’ve always wanted to help those who need it (homeless, suffered a tsunami or a volcano rupture, ect.)

exactly like that! though she's not the only one...

edit: might need to add some additional dialogue to this to make it more clear, but a clarification in the interim; he knows about his own footprints. he's just surprised to see something similar already there when he knows he's only just landed. he lifts his own shoe to confirm that they're not identical (and also to reveal this to the viewer). seems his stoicism beat off the clarity in this one, sorry 😭

i love it when bad is very specifically a good roleplayer by giving other people good prompts. like casually bringing up wilbur now to tallulah. or when he put missa in the petting zoo. or all those times he Tormented the Lesbians so they could protect each other from him. its just so !!!! I love watching roleplayers be considerate of other roleplayers and gleefully hand over something they Know the other person's character can react to. i've seen cellbit do it, too (that time he handed his knife to bbh. oh my god). it's not a rare thing, and it's possible to be a good roleplayer without keeping that sort of considerate back and forth in mind, but its one of my favourite things to notice. foolish does it too, sometimes- i haven't watched him much, but i did take note of when he Made Sure to bring jaiden along with him on a cucurucho quest. and basically every interaction he had with bad when the eggs were missing. its just so so good

someone free me from this very cursed The Raven Cycle inspired bsd au. rich kid Dazai spends all his time researching the supernatural and ley lines in Japan’s country side. He had a (near) death experience as a kid but was saved through supernatural means and now he is unable to die. But the gift of his immortality is unbearable to Dazai. Thus he has dedicated his life to researching the supernatural to figure out what happened to him and how to reverse it. Since his incident he has also been able to see the supernatural. Unfortunately, when he is trying to come in direct contact with the supernatural it dispels, almost like he is nullifying it.

Chuuya is the youngest in a found family household of shrine workers and spiritual mediums. He is the only one in his family that’s not inclined to the supernatural but everyone around him feels the supernatural more severely when he is around. Even though he can’t see the supernatural like his family members do, he helps out and enhances the supernatural during seances and other family business.

When Dazai and Chuuya meet, their opposing inclinations to the supernatural cancel each other out. But the same way their inclinations to the supernatural are opposing each other so are their personalities. Will they get over their differences to work together?

And then there is this little tiny detail that could shake up this potential research partnership. Chuuya has been told since he was a little kid that he would kill his true love with their first kiss. During a seance he enhanced a few months earlier, Chuuya managed to catch a glimpse of an actual ghost for the first time. The ghost of a boy who is supposed to die in the next 12 months. Lippmann told him that non-clairvoyants are only able to see the ghosts of the future-dead if they are the one to kill them… or their soulmate. The boys name? Dazai. And now that Chuuya has met him he is pretty sure he is going to kill him. Right?!
