Thoughts on Ricken Hale

I've seen some meta to the effect that Ricken is being set up as a sort of foil to Kier Egan. Kier's family is trying to turn him into a patriarchal god through the worship of his Lumon manual, a mix of religious commands for submission and advice for feeling contented at work, while Ricken has a league of sycophants ready to hear out his vanity projects and discuss his book at a moment's notice.

But what I've been thinking about is what Devon sees in Ricken, as well as what makes his book not just compelling to the Innies, but deprogramming. And of course, it's the fact that what Ricken lacks in humility, or accuracy, he makes up for in his ability to explain basic things about the world to someone who has no experience of it.

He also does seem to have his heart in the right place at times. He does care about Mark and wants to reconcile with him, he is scared of becoming like his own father, and even in his public reading he tries to put his focus on Eleanor, even when his "friends" are unwilling to engage with her existence.

To Mark and Dylan, reading Ricken's basic anti-establishment, vaguely pro-labor rhetoric is like a crash course in every human sentiment that led to this book existing. Believe in yourself, your job isn't everything, sometimes the world around you is unfair and wrong. These are huge to what are essentially, sheltered children living in a strict orphanage. The absent idealized patriarch of Kier, versus the flawed, compassionate, teacher in Ricken.

So maybe Devon chose Ricken because, for better or worse, and right or wrong, he seemed like he would make a good dad.

just losing it over here thinking about how Mark running up to his sister Devon in 1.09 shouting “She’s alive!” is obviously about him finally realizing his wife Gemma is Ms. Casey from work but given that he likely will be switched off overtime seconds later, Devon will only assume he‘a referring to her daughter Eleanor as being alive and completely miss his one chance for his innie self to tell Devon that Gemma is alive

honestly devon smiling while talking to innie!mark makes me soft. like it was obvious that she really was someone everyone liked and it breaks my heart. of course it was really cute when mark smiled after he said she had a nice name but idk it hits different when your family and friends loved your significant other. i would also like to add that she smiled the two times he said her name, almost like she was happy to hear him say it again? like, it seemed like he didn't want to talk about her because it hurt so much.

Honestly if Scout does make it out of this and they have his "urges" under control, I feel he would end up living with Jake wherever he'd up end up in by the time the season ends

It'll take a VERY long time for Devon to get used to, but eventually, slowly the anger towards Scout melts aways for Devon and he kinda goes through the same trouble that Jake went through about it

But Jake helps Devon out and tells him about guilt, forgiveness and how he views it so it can help them both heal

I just,,,,,, like thinking about Jake helping Devon out like Devon did for him, esp with guilt complexes and shit!

Also gonna say that Jake's Guilt Complex reminds of that Duckman episode where he had to confront his guilt complex woo!
