Penelope's weaving
aka I, an archeologist, am here to review the accuracy Penelope's loom in the 2024 movie 'The Return' because I want to avoid thinking about all my papers due next week. For context, I am currently writing my bachelor paper on Minoan textiles, and while I am definitely not an expert, I do know a thing or two about bronze age textile technology
So first point of pedantry: that is not at all a bronze ago loom.
I can't say exactly say what kind of loom this is, as I've only studied bronze ago looms. Whatever kind of horizontal/draw/treadle loom this is, I can confidently state that this would not have been used in Mycenaean times. I'd say that we only see these kinds of looms in Europe from the medieval period, somewhere around the 11th century.
In the bronze age, there are three types of looms in use (as far as we know). The horizontal ground loom, the two beam loom, and the warp-weighted loom. Most traditionally, we see iconography depict Penelope weaving on a warp-weighted loom, like this beautiful vase does.
We can clearly recognize this as a warp weighted loom, because we can see the weights: they're the little triangles at the ends of the vertical threads (the warp). The warp-weighted loom is also the only loom we can find archeological remains of, as the loom weights were often made of clay (sometimes pebbles), while the other types of looms were purely wooden.
Furthermore, I have genuinely no clue what she is supposed to be doing with her weaving in this short clip. There is no visible shed, which is the separation between the warp yarns, through which you pull the weft, so that you can actually weave something.
Here's a picture of the shed, as you can see, every other thread is pulled up, and the shed can then be switched around to create a woven pattern.
In the short clip we see, she seems to just be drawing some threads through the warp, which is more than a little nonsensical. If one was weaving a smaller fabric or a tapestry, one could perhaps use a pin or sword beater to pick up individual threads of the warp to pass your horizontal thread (the weft) under, and create patterns that way. That is still not what she is doing here. Additionally, she is weaving a solid red fabric, which would not make it a very interesting tapestry.
Perhaps she's undoing her weaving in this scene? It would make a little more sense if that was what she was doing, as no one would ever be actively weaving at night! It required a lot of light to be able to see what you were doing. Candle light just did not suffice. It still looks a little strange to me, as I don't actually see any woven fabric on the loom that she could be undoing. It's all just loose warp threads.
Honestly, it kind of looks like they picked up a loom from the nearest interactive history museum and plunked it into their movie without doing any research. I think it's a little sad that when adapting a work that centers weaving as much as the Odyssey does, the filmmakers did not do any research into bronze age weaving. You really don't need to be writing a paper on this stuff to find sources for this!
I'll just leave you all with this: a beautiful reconstruction of a warp-weighted loom, with the beginnings of a tapestry as Penelope would have woven it. You can see the loom weights at the bottom, and the sticks in the middle called the heddles, which were used to create the shed I discussed earlier. This is part of the Penelope project.
#archeology#the odyssey#the return#the return 2024#penelope of ithaca#odysseus#if someone knows more about horizontal looms feel free to correct me#theyre definitely out of my area of expertise#i honestly dont really care if movies are historically accurate or not#historical accuracy is in itself an unattainable goal#as even archeologists cannot accurately reconstruct the past#but also#this is just a really obvious mistake#its a little lazy imo#if youre going to adapt a book where weaving is such an important theme#maybe do a quick google search#textile history#additionally i have not watched the movie#only the trailer#so if the movie says anything that contradicts what i said here im sorry#maybe this isnt a loom at all and its a warping frame or something lmao

i will never understand how or why the httyd movies did the books such an injustice.
the movies aren't even an adaptation - they stole the name of the series, the name of some of the characters and places, and the general idea that there are dragons. honestly, i would be fine with the movies and maybe even like them if they didn't capitalize off of cressida cowell's incredible books that never get any credit.
the books are an amazing story about the cycle of violence and how vengeance and revenge is dangerous. hiccup says that the past is a ghost story, one we need to learn from to better ourselves. the books are about how everyone deserves freedom, how every creature, every being on the earth deserves to be free. we see that in the slavemark, with the dragons.
and like... hiccup is so different. they did him a severe injustice. he's scrawny and intelligent and learned to talk to dragons simply by observing them! he chooses kindness first above all else; instead of yelling at toothless to train him, he is kind. and in the end, that kindness is why toothless chose to save him. bc even toothless himself says that dragons are inherently selfish creatures who care only for their survival. hiccup is brave - his beliefs differ drastically from both the vikings and the world.
hiccup is a child who chose to do the right thing even at the expense of himself. he agreed to free the slaves on nobert's ship, and in return, they gave him the slavemark which is easy to give but cannot be removed. he was like twelve. and having the slavemark means he cannot be with his tribe or his family, it means he isn't considered a human being anymore. and he keeps it a secret for awhile until it's revealed and when it is everyone turns their backs on hiccup. his family, his tribe, his mentor, people he TRUSTED. everyone except fishlegs, and, once she got over the shock, camicazi. he was thirteen. and even when he lost his memories and was really injured, he persisted. he was told to go to tomorrow and to save the dragons and he did bc in his heart he knew it was right even though he didn't know who he was or how he got there.
and fishlegs,,, oh my god FISHLEGS!!! the did him SO DIRTY!!! fishlegs is hiccup's best friend, one of the main motivators for hiccup. he steals norbert's potato for the sake of fishlegs, he gives fishlegs his dragon and goes to retrieve another, he takes the blame for fishlegs. and fishlegs does the same for him. he takes the slavemark with pride. he refuses to turn. he gives hiccup his lobster claw necklace which is his most prized possession. he is brave for hiccup, he believes hiccup is alive. he fights for hiccup harder than anyone else ever has. he does not turn. his is loyal, has allergies, has asthma, has a squint and a limp, has glasses bc he's blind without them... and he's still a hero despite being a runt, despite everyone even the adults telling him he's hopeless, telling hiccup to leave him behind.
and they cut camicazi! i'm sorry, but astr*d is nothing compared to camicazi. camicazi is a tiny, feral child who can easily best hiccup, fishlegs, and pretty much anyone in a sword fight. she can bring a grown man to tears with her rudery and smack talk. she is recklessly brave and craves adventure and follows hiccup blindly bc she trusts him that much. she isn't in love with hiccup - in fact she doesn't care about romance and love. she gives up everything to help hiccup bc she has a strong sense of justice. she is the motivator, the cheerleader, she finds a positive in everything. she never gives up. literally never gives up. and that's one of the most inspiring things about her: she always has hope.
and toothless! god!!! toothless is *thought to be* a common or garden dragon. he is horrifically tiny, he is literally toothless, and is the biggest brat in the world. he will cause problems on purpose. he has a stutter, he's the most selfless selfish dragon around. he and hiccup can talk to each other. he masks his fear with singing and being annoying. his growth is remarkable. he starts off refusing to obey hiccup, doing the opposite of what he says, making life harder for literally everyone around him, and he's still somewhat like that. but he's also braver, more caring, more willing to make sacrifices for the sake of others. he's clever, which he needs to be to make up for his size and aggression. he protects hiccup with everything he has, therefore, he protects what hiccup cares about just as hard. he was the only dragon that didn't abandon the vikings in the first book bc he cared about hiccup.
and snotlout,,, god,,, i will never forgive the movies for butchering snotlout. hiccup's cousin, the bully character, the one who is horrifically jealous that hiccup's dad was born before his. the one who desperately wants to prove himself, to be worthy, to make people proud. and you hate him, you despise him. he betrays everyone many times bc of the nothing promised to him by alvin and his mom. he loses himself, turns his back on himself, all bc he wants to prove himself. all bc he wants to be better than hiccup. and hiccup still forgives him and gives him chances, sometimes out of pity, but also bc snotlout is his cousin. he can't just turn his back on him no matter how miserable snotlout made his life. and in the end, snotlout sacrifices himself for hiccup. he gives up his life for hiccup in one last attempt to set things right. his death and the events preceding it are one of my absolute favorite moments in the book. gives me chills. makes me cry.
that's the thing with the books - they're so realistic. there is no inherently happy ending where everything works out. the first book begins with "there were dragons when i was a boy", implying that they're gone now. the books show there are consequences to our actions. they enslaved the dragons, they fought against them during the dragon rebellion all bc alvin and his mom said to, and now they're gone bc a simple apology doesn't fix hundreds of years of enslavement. and the only way for the world to move forward was for the dragons to leave and heal on their own. and now they have to learn to live without them. and yeah i've heard the third movie ends like that but. it doesn't have the build up. it doesn't have "there were dragons when i was a boy". it doesn't have eleven books of development to back it up, to make it feel meaningful.
i know that the movies are really special to a lot of people. i know that, on their own, they're genuinely good movies. i can acknowledge that the soundtrack is amazing and the animation is beautiful. i just can't see past the way they butchered the world that i love, the world that i grew up with. i can't see past the way people yelled at me for saying i liked the books better, the way that people gave me weird looks when i showed them a picture of the original toothless, when i tell them that nightfuries aren't even a type of dragon. cressida cowell created hundreds of different dragons, and the movies couldn't even pick from that. i can't forgive the way that barely anyone knows there are books bc the movie barely gives credit to them. i cannot forgive the way they capitalized off the books and then shoved them aside. i know cressida thinks they're good movies and i know a lot of httyd book fans also like them. but i just... i cannot get over how much they changed and how they missed so much and ignored the books. also they got rid of camicazi so hiccup could have a love interest and that is unforgivable to me.
if you disagree, that is a-okay. we're all entitled to our own opinions. i just ask that you, perhaps, try the books out. give them a chance. bc they're amazing works of art and also just like. don't yell at people who don't like the movies? whether it's bc they prefer the books or just aren't into that kind of movie. and just remember that dreamworks didn't come up with the story; cressida cowell did.
#corey talks:)#this has been in my drafts forever but i saw something that made me have feelings and so i finished it and here take this iuygfcvghuij#i justgod the books are SO GOOD and barely anyone knows theyexist#and i think that's what makes me the kost upset#or some [people chose to ignore they exist or don't give them a chance bc... i don't even know why. ppl are just so quick to dismiss them#the books are so important to me (literally got a httyd book tattoo) and i get most book fans also like the movies#but it sucks bc i can't go through the httyd tag without being bombarded with movie stuff#i'll even look up 'httyd books' and half of it is still about the movies.#i'll look up snotface snotlout and only finds movie stuff even tho ig they changed his last name in the movies???#i'll look up camicazi and find it filled with astr*d. WHAT.#i'll look u toothless and only see the freaking nightfury. not the original.#like god movie enjoyers at least tag correctly. i get you want ppl to see your posts but the more i see movie stuff in the book tag the mor#i hate the movies lol like the movies are so much more popular than the books let us have our tags okay#sorry if any of this sounds bitter also i hope it doesn't sound like i want to argue or fight#this is just my opinion and i have feelings and i just want ppl to know there are books#also i am not shaming anyone who likes the movies like i already said you do you boo just don't come at me for doing me#bc yes that has happened to me multiple times :) which is one reason why i get so upset :)#i just personally cannot separate the two. i know some ppl can and i'm glad! but i can't and that's okay too#httyd#httyd books

there should've been at least a full view of Fíli's body in the funeral scene
"Fíli you didn't deserve any of this" we all say in unison
#you already know how much i hate the way the hobbit movies are not canon-accurate at all#but what my boy Fili did to deserve such erasure... not even Mahal knows#not only he's the “least important Durin” in the movies somehow?? like he's literally the heir?? hello???#(Thorin's the king and we have that -ugh- Kíli subplot... nothing for Fíli)#we didn't even get a full body view like the rest of the departed. why.#but tbh I hate the funeral scene in general in the movies (the whole change w/ the Elvenking's character) so yeah#this is just the cherry on top#before anyone comes for my head for anything I've said: the movies are great movies BUT most definitely not good the hobbit adaptations#never in a million years will I ever say “if you don't feel like reading the book just watch the movie and I'll tell you the rest :)”#because literally no YOU'll be telling me the rest 😭#but also never in a million years will I ever say “please for the love of everything holy do NOT ever watch those terrible halfling films”#the hobbit#fili and kili#fili durin#kili durin#the hobbit thorin#thorin oakenshield#the hobbit movies

but her past and her connection to the Crocodile won’t go away, and she gets caught up in his revolutionary ambitions
disabled MC (vitiligo, cane user)
#The Maid and The Crocodile#aroaessidhe 2024 reads#I loved this a lot!#The story has so much personality and is charming and simple but with a lot of complexity in the background and worldbuilding.#Sade is such a fantastic protagonist; I love her genuine enjoyment of being a maid and how it's an important and legitimate job.#The romance is very sweet actually; and I enjoyed their bickering (’don’t come’ ‘don’t tell me what to do’ 😭)#Very obvious inspiration and comp to Howl’s Moving Castle - moreso the movie but both tbh. It didn’t feel derivative though.#howell if his passion was revolution#It’s also a standalone but definitely pretty directly dealing with some of the aftermath of the Raybearer Duology.#I really like how it explores some of the results of abolishing the monarchy and some of the societal changes because of that#- especially regarding average people#I loved all the side characters - the amenities; and the side lesbians. Also the ending!#Really great narration - the accents and the singing! (though at 2x the singing sounds very weird; I still appreciate it conceptually)#‘the children yearn for the mines’ yeah i noticed that reference#good book

Guys, there's something I never understood in dead poets society: the age of the poets (and their classmates).
We know from the movie that the poets are 17 in September (beginning of the school year) But!! In the book, it says that the poets are in junior year (11th grade?). (I haven't read the book yet, so I might be wrong but I'm sure I saw something like this somewhere). At the same time, it says they are sixteen in the book, but once again I'm not sure.
So what do we believe? If we believe the movie, they are seventeen, and they could be in senior year (which would be logical since Americans finish high school at 18? If I'm not wrong?). I don't remember a moment in the movie when they specified in which year they are. So for me they are in senior year.
If we believe the book, they are 16 (not sure) and in junior year. It means that they still have a last year of high school after the one we followed (with Mr keating and everything), or to be exact 1 year and a half since the story ends after Neil's death in December).
So I don't know which version is the right one, and i guess it doesnt make a big difference but i still need to know 😭😭 I'm not American so I don't know everything about the school system but I'm pretty sure y'all Americans finish school when you are 18 (or 17 going on 18 if you were born at the end of the year). At least in my country you finish school in 12th grade when you are 18.
If they are seventeen AND in junior year, it's not logical, here's an example from my school:
I was in 11th grade this year (like the poets in the book) , and during the first part of the school year (September-December) everyone was 16 (or 15 going on 16 if born at the end of the year). So people started to turn 17 from January to December of 12th grade. And on January of 12th grade, they start to turn 18, and in June, high school is over and some people are 18, and others are 17 going on 18.
The poets would be 17 in September of junior year, so they still have 2 full years of high school, which means they would finish high school at 19? But I thought Americans finished high school at 18? :')) Maybe it's different because Welton is a private school or because it was in the 50s. But yeah it's not logical to me and I need to understand 😭😭
Maybe I'm wrong and they are not even 16 or in junior year in the book and I made that up 💀 that would be sad
What do you guys think about it?
#Nobody's gonna read all of that#It's not even important but I'm willing to know the truth about their age :((#So tell me what you think pleasee do you believe the book or the movie?#dead poets society book#dps fandom#dps headcanons#neil perry#todd anderson

Would that there was a faithful, accurate adaptation of Dracula so that Jonathan Decker and Alan Seawright could discuss the nontoxic masculinity, healthy friendships, and the BEST MARRIAGE RELATIONSHIP IN FICTIONAL HISTORY but nooo!
#every time they're like 'tell us your favorite movie couples in the comments' I'm just like I wish I could Jono I wish I could#*all* of the men openly cry in this novel#and despite the filter through Seward’s narration it is not actually looked down on#Seward makes comments about manhood and what not but clearly does not think any less of Arthur or Van Helsing or Harker for showing emotion#i know everyone on here is all about the poly thing#and idk how serious that is or if its just for fun or whatever#and it's tumblr so to each their own#but personally the platonic love in this book is so beautiful and refreshing!#healthy loving friendships are so rare in media and it's an important part of nontoxic masculinity too tbh#the fact that the suitor squad all love and support each other and do anything to help Lucy without ever getting jealous or entitled#and don't get me started on how wonderful and amazing Jonathan and Mina are bc I will never stop!#i love this book so much#it's 127 years old why is it better at this stuff than most modern media?#and why can't any of the adaptations get it right?#like it's one thing to be disappointing and inaccurate but it objectively dismantles the themes!#dracula#writing#cinema therapy#jonamina#suitor squad#mina harker#jonathan harker

i've rewatched the red white and royal blue movie and it's killing me that they cut out all of their family relationships and issues. june, the divorce, bea and her addiction, cathrine not even being in the movie, henry's dad and his death. all of these had so much impact not only on their romance but on their characters.
like i completely understand why they cut out so much about the election and other political stuff. but i don't understand why they couldn't include these important factors in their love.
#it would have been so much better#i don't want to be the person who complains about the differences between a book and a movie but it's really important to me#red white and royal blue#rwrb#rwrb movie#alex claremont diaz#prince harry#henry fox mountchristen windsor

thinking about serial killer's daughter clove again! can you imagine the vibes though like.
her dad was supposed to go into a hunger games but then didn't and he tried to live a relatively normal life with like a wife and kids and everything, had three sons on purpose and then an accident baby (clove) like ten years after the third son. one day he allegedly goes mad and kills a bunch of people at the quarry where he works in some vicious murder spree and peacekeepers chase him down and shoot him dead right in front of six year old clove.
her brothers are all grown adults/gone and the mom doesn't want to deal with a grieving traumatised child by herself so she sends clove off to the academy and then disappears to one of the other towns. clove's brothers have either relocated far away or just can't afford to take her in so she gets to live in the academy dorms. then clove spends years getting bullied and teased about her loser deadbeat serial killer dad who couldn't get into a games so she puts on this creepy image to protect herself and becomes so good at knife throwing that it gets her a highly coveted spot in the games.
she plays up the father's daughter image/her inherited sadism and it kind of stopped being an act somewhere along the way. she does obviously have emotions and feelings though, in fact one of the reasons clove grows fond of her district partner is because he deeply respects her and doesn't belittle/harass/tease her about her past or act like her father's actions define her, and he's terrified of her but in an admiring and sweet way instead of genuinely being repulsed by her like most of her peers were around her.
#who's gonna write the fic#I'm sorry guys I'm so bored#in my fic I wrote Clove as just having a normal family because I've met girls as mean as her irl that have relatively normal families#so I know you don't have to have a tragic creepy family history to be a bitch lol#but yeah serial killer's daughter clove literally fits her personality so well#had to sneak in some clato at the end of this post lol#literally any dynamic they have is so important to me because i feel like it's one of their first times of friendship#where they didn't have anything to gain from each other and just appreciated each other as people. liked each other#like yes you can say “Oh they only cared about the rule change because the alliance could be extended”#in the movies he left her to die of course (pisses me off to this day) but in the books:#no one who only cares about practical alliances/protection gets on their knees to beg the person not to die#okay this turned into a clato rant real quick oops#thg#clove kentwell#clove thg#thg clove#thg headcanons#the hunger games

I can't believe y'all almost made me pay to go watch po*r th*ngs in theater without telling me that the whole thing revolves around a hardcore born sexy yesterday trope with a side dish of pseudo necrophilia where a woman with the brain of a litteral foetus who don't have periods or body hair (but do have boobs!) find joy and freedom by having a lot of sex with a bunch of men, shoving a apple up her vagina for some reason and joining a brothel (but it's a cool socialist brothel and all the girls looove being there, don't worry guys), all of that written and directed by two men, I'm never gonna trust you guys after this one lmao
#she also piss on the floor at some point and talks about fucking with the vocabulary of a toddler but i'm supposed to believe it's not sus#lmao ok sure#'there's more to the story than this!' idgaf! 'you're taking it out of context!' idgaf! 'it's actually a feminist story!' no it's not lmao#i cannot let go of the socialist brothel either like wooooow#men are so obsessed with the idea of natural born sex workers it's almost comical#also i cannot comment on the original book since i haven't read it#but apparently a big thing is that at the end it's revealed by the woman character that the male ones where bullshitting...#...about pretty much everything to look smarter and more important than they are#but in this 'feminist' movie they actually do frankenstein the woman and give her a second life fr fr#like aiiiight lmao#btw i truly don't care if you love the movie that's perfectly fine i love plenty of movies with very questionable content#plus i don't think anyone need my approbation to enjoy anything in this world#but boy does it personally gross me out#poor things spoilers#i hope this don't pop in the tag btw#if it does i'm sorry but people who wants to see it *will* complain about being spoil
