Katara helped Raise Korra, train her in her first element, incorporating not only combat techniques, but also valuable skills and aspects of their culture like healing. She went on to oversee Korra's training even after she graduated to the other elements, and when she saw that Korra was losing steam, she intuited that Korra needed to leave. She encouraged her to do so, and I know that meant a lot to Korra. Especially as everyone else insisted on handling Korra and trying to control her (even with good intentions), Katara was the one who encouraged Korra to take her destiny into her own hands.

Katara : Aang's time has passed. My brother and many of my friends are gone. It's time for you and your generation to take over the responsibility of keeping peace and balance in the world. And I think you're going to be a great Avatar. Korra : [Hugs Katara.] Thank you. Katara: [Close-up of Katara's face, still smiling with her eyes closed.] Goodbye, Korra.

Katara was there from day fucking one, and her and Korra's bond is a treat to observe. Its also so visible in how Korra carries herself, her values and opinions, that Katara had a huge part in shaping the person Korra is. They're both confident, strong women with a firm belief in their ideals, and a burning desire to help others.

Korra: But I couldn't just sit by and do nothing. It's my duty to help people.

And this is all not even getting into the fact that Katara helped Korra walk again, healing her physically and starting her on her mental health journey. Without Katara, Korra wouldn't have even been able to make it to Toph!

And this still remains one of the most powerful scenes in the entire Avatar franchise to me. It is such a wonderful crowning of Katara's core character traits- hope and resilience. That stubborn, unyielding faith in the good in the world and belief that things will get better because you will make it so- this scene reminded me why Katara is my favourite character in atla, and how important she is to both shows.

This scene is also so wonderful about Korra's character, and I know so many people struggling with mental issues resonated with her here. And I know that Katara's words meant a lot to them, as they did to me and to Korra.

Also, I just adore that Katara's necklace seems to have Raava's pattern on it, it's just such a cool detail and it really makes sense for these two to be symbollicaly intertwined in Korra's story.

And not to discredit Toph, because there is some merit to be found in her time with Korra, and it is ultimately what helped Korra heal. But also beating up a 20 year old for a few weeks, not too long after said 20 year old was paraplegic seems like a steep price for a few nuggets of wisdom.I also have personal gripes with how this part of the show was handled but thats neither here nor there.

Ok so I've started reading them and I have to say the retelling of Prometheus is my favourite so far. Whoever decided to star Donald Duck as Prometheus and Fethry as Epimetheus deserves a raise because it would be PERFECT for a greek mythology AU. I would never have thought about it myself but hear me out.

Donald is actually a really good pick to star as Prometheus. I mean isn't Prometheus's whole thing to defy authority to do what you believe is right? To choose what battles you want to fight and to be ready to bear the consequences of your choice? Prometheus knows he's going to get tortured by Zeus but still chooses to bring fire to mankind anyway. And that's sounds a lot like Don's characterisation in a lot of comics. Especially the PKNA and Doubleduck series. I mean Pk has defied the army, the PBI, the time-police and a few other organisation you aren't supposed to fuck with. (everyone hates him lmao) Yes, it was the right thing to do and yes, it was the only way to protect people. But it was also incredibly risky for him. And DD doesn't always agree with the Agency's action either. For example in one comic he lies and covers the track of a character so the Agency would believe he was dead. The guy was a good person but one that knew too many secrets to be free. And that was a HUGE risk for a guy DD had literally JUST MET.

I don't know that much about Epimetheus but, from what I've heard, the two titan brothers are very Donald and Fethry coded.

2. Continuing with the titan brothers (yes that's what they're called now, don't argue); Della would do great as Atlas- since Atlas is the personification of endurance and the creator of astronomy. And Gladstone.... can be Monoetius! I actually don't know anything about him other that he's too prideful and that he managed to piss of Zeus enough to get personally zapped by lightning before getting sent to Tartarus and so, obviously he's Gladstone! :) Listen I love Gladstone but he can be really annoying.

That way you get to have a fun au AND still keep the canon family issues 😀. Instead of the Spear of Selene you have the Titanomachy! Yay! Family issues for everybody!!!

Honestly I don’t have online tips, because the thing I see most in my customer base is “I bought this bed without laying on it and I hate it.” My sample bias is real but I don’t hear about folks who have a nice time online shopping.

Good reviews can’t really help if you don’t have the same body type and preference as the reviewer and most reviews get left first thing when a new bed is exciting, not after two years when the bed in a box has lost all support. The safest way to invest in a bed is to lay on it so I don’t have tips for going in blind unfortunately.

For sleeping cooler the environment makes a big difference: pillows, sheets, and protectors can all contribute. I’ve talked before about how Technogel is my favorite coolest pillow on the market. Spendy but actually cold. Most gel pillows that advertise being cooling are pretty bunk so looking for ones that have ventilation holes punched in the foam tends to be a good bet. Purple pillows also sleep way cooler than anything else.

Single ply natural fiber sheets will wick heat and moisture, and a mattress protector with cooling applied is worth investing in.

also while playing trivial pursuit my sister pronounced leisure [lɛʒɚ] and people were kind of razzing her for not pronouncing it [liʒɚ], and i was like well that's also how i pronounce it so i don't see what the big deal is. it rhymes with measure which is obviously very cool. and her bf was like that's not surprising, you two are the most similar people i've ever met. which was horrendously flattering and also very funny because i don't think we're that similar, but also whenever my sister and i do something the same way i always wonder if it's just because we were exposed to the same influences and forces growing up, or because she got it specifically from me. especially because of our age difference and how much she idolized me as a child, it's quite possible that many of the things we have in common are because she saw me doing them and just thought i was endlessly cool and copied me. which is INSANE to me because i think SHE is so cool, but not for the things that we have in common, for all the other stuff lol.

What is even the point of Silver living in the future? It’s not his future anymore and he has no friends or family there. There’s nothing for him there. Now that he has precognition he should just live in Sonic’s time and get visions of disasters. 

Seriously there’s no point in his future or time travel. We’ll never see it, Silver only cares about the state of it and he can only go to Sonic’s time anyway.

I find this an interesting question myself. The best answer I can give as to why Silver keeps returning to the future is that him being from the future is "his thing", just like how having PK is "his thing". It's just something very much intertwined with his character; basically every bio he has makes mention of it, for example. But I also agree with the notion that him being from the future opens up some issues. I've seen statements that it is difficult to make Silver relevant if he must travel to the past every time, for example, which I don't disagree with (but for me, the same could then be said about Blaze and the Sol Dimension or Knuckles and the Master Emerald). Adding to that, I do not believe we know for certain if its state is generally 'destroyed' or 'saved' and if Silver grew up in a destroyed world (said in multiple bios) or a good one (I'd argue that is implied in Rivals 1, with Eggman Nega almost certainly having stolen the camera from someone else and Onyx Island being both a paradise and having developed industry on it that I do not believe Angel Island currently has). Furthermore, the Rivals games are also not very consistent to me about if the future has actually gotten rewritten or not (but it tentatively seems to lean that way, since Silver says at the end of Rivals 2 he hopes the new future is a happy one), and we legit just do not know how its alleged destruction goes. Does Silver indeed intervene before something bad can happen, or does the future actively turn bad before his very eyes and he goes back in time to undo that again? I am truly not certain if there's ever been a clear-cut answer from a credible source, though I am pretty sure there's multiple conflicting explanations from non-credible ones... but that really doesn't help make things clear. And lastly, we also do not know what he has in his own era when it comes to friends and family, nor is it ever clearly shown or said how he time-travels in any game other than '06. With all that combined I can see why having him return again and again gets... well, confusing, haha!

In that regard, I also feel there is merit in the idea of him just staying for good in the past. His friends are there, it's consistently where the action happens anyway, and Team Sonic Racing indeed hints at him having a sense of precognition. The Japanese version actually dives into it more, with Silver asking himself at the very end when Eggman's battleship is going down if that is what was causing his bad/nagging feelings. Considering he was necessary there to help carry people and racecars off it to safety, it does imply to me that that scene might have intended to show it as a genuine skill of his. Shame the English version cuts that moment out entirely. So yeah, the point of Silver being in the future is, to the best of my explanations, legit just the fact that's how he has been conceptualised, making it "his thing". But it does cause confusions for me, because of how much there is not clearly explained and all the contradictory information out there from non-game sources. I think having Silver stay in the past for good could make for a nice move on Sega's part, assuming it is within his own decisions (so not forced by A ThingTM that is entirely unexplained to us and removes all his agency, for example). I think it'd be a nice resolution for Silver to see his heart lays in the past, and he can still protect his own world from there too!

Oh, absolutely, I 100% agree that fanfic has huge amounts of interiority, "looking at the characters' thoughts that we never get to see" is a huge part of why it's written! What I'm referring to with "fanfiction bad habits" (if they can even really be called that, because they're not always bad habits if you're actually writing fic!) is stuff like overdescription of appearance or gesture. Fic authors are trying to indicate that the character on the page is the same character as is on the screen, and part of what is distinctive about the character on the screen is their appearance/physicality. For instance, in SPN Sam Winchester has long(ish) hair as... more of an appearance note than anything else? you can dig for character meaning but the show really doesn't do that, but it's one of the most iconic elements of his character, so it gets referenced in fic a LOT and often in places where on a technical level it's either unnecessary or actively slows down a scene. Same goes for trying to exactly describe character outfits. If you switch to original prose and aren't trying to match a character who primarily exists in visual media, you don't need to be constantly describing their hairstyle or walk or appearance, but the habit is there and might be hard to notice or break.

HOWEVER I also completely agree with your statement that a lot of authors (ahem ahem SANDERSON) are writing like they really want to make a movie or TV show, I don't have anything to add but. yeah. that's definitely something I've noticed as well.

A lot of fiction these days reads as if—as I saw Peter Raleigh put it the other day, and as I’ve discussed it before—the author is trying to describe a video playing in their mind. Often there is little or no interiority. Scenes play out in “real time” without summary. First-person POV stories describe things the character can’t see, but a distant camera could. There’s an overemphasis on characters’ outfits and facial expressions, including my personal pet peeve: the “reaction shot round-up” in which we get a description of every character’s reaction to something as if a camera was cutting between sitcom actors.

When I talk with other creative writing professors, we all seem to agree that interiority is disappearing. Even in first-person POV stories, younger writers often skip describing their character’s hopes, dreams, fears, thoughts, memories, or reactions. This trend is hardly limited to young writers though. I was speaking to an editor yesterday who agreed interiority has largely vanished from commercial fiction, and I think you increasingly notice its absence even in works shelved as “literary fiction.” When interiority does appear on the page, it is often brief and redundant with the dialogue and action. All of this is a great shame. Interiority is perhaps the prime example of an advantage prose as a medium holds over other artforms.

fascinated by this article, "Turning Off the TV in Your Mind," about the influences of visual narratives on writing prose narratives. i def notice the two things i excerpted above in fanfic, which i guess makes even more sense as most of the fic i read is for tv and film. i will also be thinking about its discussion of time in prose - i think that's something i often struggle with and i will try to be more conscious of the differences between screen and page next time i'm writing.

oh also on a brighter note! i said yesterday i would swap with my brother at some point. i did not. i actually played from 12ish to 7ish. i was able to play for that long and my wrists only started having issues at 7ish (which is why i stopped). but after putting my night braces on, i woke up to them being no worse than they usually are.
