You know what the scene in the school where Jack left Joke to be surprised by his father cemented in me?

That the show is more interested in specific class commentary than in the commentary that the characters themselves offer about their situations.

Which is to say...

Joke's trauma is being underwritten and turned into something funny because Jack's trauma is the serious part of the show, because Jack's trauma from poverty overrules Jack's trauma from his struggles with school and with feeling like a constant scapegoat and unworthy of being loved.

Jack is allowed every trauma, he is allowed to say that he has never dreamed and that being poor means you don't dream even when he's the one who dreamed where Joke never had a thought of his own future in his mind but that wasn't important because he wasn't poor and he wasn't trapped in that way and so it doesn't matter as much ans his lack of dreams is never commented on.

Jack leaves Joke standing in front of a class full of children with a problem he can't solve and it's played as funny, as lighthearted, as if Joke on the verge of a panic attack is something that everyone should be laughing at because his trauma isn't treated as deep or serious. His father, who is the reason for most of this trauma, is sent in to rescue him and then they resolve their relationship. And... that's that! He's invited home. It's over. None of that trauma matters anymore and it was all meant to be funny, to be a joke, to be something Jack did for him... you know, humiliate him because he's bad at school. Funny.

The show is more interested in making class commentary than it is on character commentary and that's why I'm worried that Jack won't be the one to go after Joke but that Joke will have to come back again, that Joke will have to fight for them again, that it will always be Joke fighting because the show doesn't care about Joke's trauma except to solve it as quickly and unimportantly as possible so they can focus on Jack and his neighborhood.

And I'm not saying Jack doesn't have trauma or that commenting about that is wrong or that class commentary is wrong but what I am saying is that Moonlight Chicken did it better and deeper and faced down the fact that trauma happens no matter how much money you have and that trauma might be different depending on class but it's all still trauma all the way down.

Jack has his trauma but so does Joke but the show doesn't care about Joke's trauma because they want to make a commentary on classism and class issues and that means that Joke's issues can never be as bad or as important as Jack's because he's not part of the commentary or at least he wasn't. Now he is and so his new trauma is allowed but the old things? They have to just... stop.

I am struggling with this a lot so I'm making this post to get words and thoughts out. This doesn't mean I hate the show or the characters or the creators or even that I'm not enjoying it! This is just a specific aspect of the show itself and an ongoing issue in Thai B: that has frustrated me for a while tbh because it's so often that they can only honor the trauma of one of the characters in a relationship so the other gets brushed aside (see also: Mhok of Last Twilight).

I also really think that if the show had been more invested in the specific struggles of the characters we could have gotten even more painful social commentary about Rose's trying to help that never does and Jack's struggles with failed dreams and Hoy and Tattoo being trapped where they are and Aran arriving and just so much that would have been just as interesting as The One Ring of Crime.

The Valentino and Angel Dust section are infuriating and I have to rant about it:

1) Vivziepop can’t complain when people reduce Angel Dust to a sex joke when that’s all the promotional stuff does for him. It’s just “he did porn. Laugh”. His personality is just porn and abuse. This isn’t interesting and honestly just offensive. I actually wish when I thought he was at worst, a 90s gay stereotype

2) The playbills not mentioning Valentino being a serial rapist/abuser is fucking annoying but whatever, it’s meant to be more lighthearted. What annoys me is that all they talk about instead is how hot he is and that’s it. Not his personality or interests, nothing that makes him complex or nuance or just a little bit INTERESTING like his fans pretend he is. Just weird affirmations for a serial rapist.

3) this also explains why Vivziepop is weirdly passive aggressive towards people who hate Valentino. She wanted everyone to see him as a sexy problematic yaoi boyfriend and when a lot of survivors understandably didn’t, and had a massive issue with people trying to woobify a man who’s only lines are about how much he loves murder and rape, she got angry. Which is so telling because she’s so fandom and porn brained that she didn’t realize some survivors wouldn’t look past Valentino’s abusive behavior to find him sexy.

4) The gags about the weird titles of porn films that Angel Dust has starred in aren’t funny but far less funny when you know none of it is consensual. Why is Vivziepop still trying to push this joke about how funny it is that Angel Dust is a porn star and is owned by Valentino. Even in merch like Youtooz they make jokes about it. As if we didn’t see what the porn films actually look like, where he’s visibly in pain and literally beat up LOL.

5) Vivziepop’s obsession with incest and pedophilia, particularly with underaged boys needs to be studied dude. I’m not saying Vivziepop is a pedophile but it’s such a frequent pattern of hers and it adds to that obsession with seeing queer men suffering. Yes porn is pretty notorious for having problematic themes like incest and pedophilia but when you know how she treated some of her underaged male zoophobia characters (cough cough ADDISON cough) it’s just makes me side eye her a bit

6) also want to add that obsession with “the pure boy” plus the script that would go on and on about how Angel dust is a little boy is fucking creepy. I wouldn’t be shocked if Viv was ever exposed as a shotacon

7) if Valentino dies and Angel dust still makes constant sex jokes and still sexually harasses men then Viv no longer has a right to complain when people point it out

Nailed it. "He did porn. Laugh," is pretty much the show's entire philosophy when it comes to Angel Dust, and one they refuse to budge from even when the moment is meant to be horrifying and serious.

There's no need to wait on her being exposed for it -- Viv absolutely used to be into shota. Apparently, she and Dollcreep would sit around RPing all kinds of horrifying stuff with underage Addison. But that said, this was back during a time when maybe one out of ten people in the fandom thought twice about that. It's hard to stress enough how lackadaisical people used to be about fiction.

Mostly Consistent Headcanons Across the Four Swords Fandom

I love how the entire Four Swords fandom has silently and collectively agreed that the boys stayed split.

The canonical ending of the game and manga? Just straight-up ignored lol

And sometimes (aka most of the time) Shadow is also there, and (usually) with zero explanation as to how he came back.

I mean, the dark mirror was shattered. How is he back?? lol

Sometimes he's there as a literal shadow (which is much more in line with the manga's ending now that I think about it), and communicates silently via sign and charades.

Not that I'm complaining, of course. Shadow is always welcome in the Four Swords household 😌

Speaking of households...

Sometimes the boys live in a house.

Sometimes they live in the castle.

They typically have their own bedrooms, but occasionally they'll share one room, with bunk-beds.

Sometimes they'll all be training to become knights, and sometimes they'll instead be pursuing their own interests.

And if it's the latter, then it's usually Green (and sometimes Blue) that will remain training to become a knight.

Red has a sweet tooth is always good at baking (and sometimes cooking).

Green, Blue, and Vio agree that he's the most terrifying of the four when he actually manages to get angry.

Usually a walking heater, due to being the fire element.

Emotionally intelligent.

Likes stuffed animals.

Secretly a clever prankster, but manages to hide it behind a veil of innocence.

Red eyes.

Green is usually the caretaker who looks after the others, though sometimes he doubts his own abilities and place in the team (family).

Usually a lover of puns (much to Blue's annoyance).

Sometimes has freckles.

Green eyes.

Blue is usually afraid of getting frozen again, and is sometimes still dealing with the aftereffects thereof, either permanent or temporary.

He also likes to keep things neat and tidy, a la the manga's omake.

Hates Green's puns.

If the boys have varying heights, Blue is usually one of the shortest, if not the shortest, which he just loves.

Sometimes good at cooking, and will help Red make dinner.

Is sometimes into knitting or crochet??

Cares about the others a lot but will deny it forever (the others already know, he's not subtle at all).

Blue eyes.

Vio is the night owl who stays up late reading and commits sleep crimes (and is consequently sleep deprived later).

Sometimes found sleeping (read: passed out) in the oddest places because of this.

He's the household cryptid/hermit that almost never leaves his room except to grab a snack.

Introvert.

Emotionally constipated.

He often forgets to eat and is thinner than the others (Blue has to drag him out of his room to eat lunch and dinner).

Sometimes wears reading glasses.

Can be a dramatic theater kid.

Usually the one feeling the most guilt and grief about Shadow's death.

If the boys have varying heights, Vio is usually the tallest.

"Vio" is short for violence, not violet, didn't you know? (¬‿¬)

Violet/purple eyes.

Shadow (if he's even alive in the fic in question, lol) is the Instigator of Shenanigans™

Prankster (though Red is actually better at this than he is).

The other dramatic theater kid.

He's the one that can get Vio to go along with doing dumb stuff for fun. Vio is usually a well-put-together individual, but once he's hanging out with Shadow, that's instantly out the window.

Eye color is a toss-up between all red, all blue, or red and blue heterochromia.

Sometimes the boys will have abilities based on their elements, The Last Airbender style.

Sometimes their dad is there, being a good dad, as good dads do, and sometimes he's absent and neglectful of his (now multiple) sons. Depends on the angstiness level of the fic in question.

Also sometimes Vaati is there, usually in his Minish Cap hylian form, and again without much, if any, explanation.

Even though he's sealed away? In the Four Sword??

(But then again, how are the boys able to stay split in the first place without Vaati coming back...?)
