they cast a 28 year old for Tyson 💀
[relevant rants: here and here]
yeah, i saw - i wasn't holding onto hope of them casting a disabled actor for Tyson (still disappointed, just not surprised) but casting a 28 year old for a middle schooler is really out of left field. It's just an odd choice? Particularly given how much they've been emphasizing age-accurate casting so far.
It makes me really wonder what major rewrites they have planned for Tyson's character. Because as things stand currently there's no way to make Tyson's existing character work with this casting. Tyson is supposed to be in Percy's grade, but Daniel Diemer sticks out like a sore thumb against the child actors. Tyson being in Percy's grade is pretty important for the entire arc of Sea of Monsters with the main character arc being Percy combating internalized ableism and establishing him as a character who stands up for other marginalized kids. If they remove that, what's Percy's arc going to be for that entire season? At what point are they going to establish that about his character? Or are they just going to exposition it at us like usual with nothing backing it up and no actual character progression? And in later seasons the age gap is only going to be more prominent - like how is Tyson going to work in BoTL or TLO? Are they planning on removing his character entirely for those scenes? Are they going to remove him as a recurring character in general? It'd be really weird if they killed him off or something.
I'm also afraid for if they do try to keep Tyson's disability coding in some form - cause there's kind of no good way it can go at this point. Either they completely erase Tyson's coding because they cast an abled actor for him and that messes up the entire arc of the book and his character particularly in relation to Percy, or they have an abled actor attempt to portray a character heavily coded as having down syndrome (and i believe they're already doing similar with iirc Chiron's actor is abled but they're doubling-down in the show on Chiron being disabled) and given how they've written the neurodivergence themes (or absence there of) in the show so far there's just no way that'd end well. Like, Tyson's characterization is a little questionable to begin with in the books, but given the show's writing so far it just feels like we're very rapidly ramping up for an extremely ableist characterization of Tyson. Like i'm sure Daniel Diemer is a great actor, but... i'm just getting real tired of the show erasing the entire premise of the series :T
anyways as per my initial post about pjo tv tyson casting theories i guess it's time for me to start tearing stuff apart with my teeth ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

thinking abt tlt, som, and ttc era percy
percy who's still struggling to find his footing at camp, and every single time during those first three prophecies, he's seen as the outcast, and never once brought into the fold until he comes back after finishing the prophecy.
there's always something that pushes him to the outskirts, something that gives the other campers fodder to make fun of him or completely ignore him.
he thinks he's found his place after the minotaur? nope, turns out everyone sees him as a bad omen and he doesn't make any friends because the entire camp refuses to be around him.
he thinks he's found his place after lighting thief? restoring zeus' bolt? NOPE he finds out tyson is a cyclopes and his brother and now one of his closest friends + the campers are icing him out and grover's not around.
he thinks he's found his place after sea of monsters? restored thalia's tree and hey, now he's got a cousin? NOPE he's pushed aside in favor of her by the campers and chiron and is seen as incompetent and his best friend has been kidnapped and he's being blamed.
rereading those first three books now is so painful, because the way percy gets treated by the camp hurts so much, because literally all he wants is to be accepted by this group of people he should have so much in common with, but every single turn meets him with more people pushing him away.
and it isn't until battle of the labyrinth, until he's named as the child of the prophecy, that people actually start to treat him as one of them.

I wasn’t sure what I saw in his face. There was no clear sign of love or approval. Nothing to encourage me. It was like looking at the ocean: some days, you could tell what mood it was in. Most days, though, it was unreadable, mysterious. - (The Lightning Thief)
There was a different light in his eyes, a fiery kind of pride. “You did well Perseus. Do not misunderstand me. Whatever else you do, know that you are mine. You are a true son of the Sea God.
[The Lightning Thief]
I wasn’t sure how he would feel about seeing me again, but the corner of his eyes crinkled with smile lines. He nodded as if to say It’s okay.
[The Titan’s Curse]
I turned and found Poseidon smiling at me […] “Hello Percy, you’ve done well.”
[The Titan’s Curse]
“[…] And you Percy, are my favourite son.” He smiled, and at that moment, just being in the kitchen with him was the best birthday present I ever got.
[The Battle of the Labyrinth]
He held out his arms and gave me a hug. I realised, a little embarrassed, that I never actually hugged my dad before. […] When he pulled away, he smiled kindly at me.
[The Last Olympian]
Poseidon ‘showing no clear signs of love or approval’ towards Percy throughout the series

Was thinking about an AU where Bianca lives—but all I can think of is how much trouble all Big Three kiddos can get into together because demigod luck + being children of the Big Three = chaos, and now I'm imagining something exploding in the distance. There's screaming, monster roars followed by pained cries, and last minute plans that somehow worked. Both camps just heave a big collective sigh.

Fuckin hate that ppl are using ava tyson as an exuse to be transphobic. Yes she did awful shit but that doesnt mean u can say that all trans people are pedos or misgender them. Im so tired of transphobia man.. not every trans person is a pedo. Not every trans person is a bad person. There are weird people no matter what gender, ethnicity, etc they are. Dont boil one persons actions to everyone in their community

Here's the thing with Cassida: skill issue. Sorry babygirl but you've got the vibe of a bright but otherwise simplistic scientist who's an atheist purely because you cannot possibly conceive of portions of the universe beyond your ken. Just because a god knows no mercy that a mortal can comprehend doesn't mean that mercy means nothing. I am not the center of the universe and I do not presume that my existence is the end-all be-all of divine intent, nor that it should be. So yet again: skill issue.

The Dobbs and Meyers 2022 Christmasgiving 🦃🎄
Since Tyson and Sasha won’t be in Corpus for Christmas, the gang came up with a unique idea that the day after Thanksgiving, they’d do their Christmas gift-giving for one another.
For Sasha, an authentic custom Browns jersey, shorts and beanie hat. Total RRP: a little too much (no, he won’t say how much).
For Cliff, he got a professional beard trimmer . For Angie, a gardening tool set and a trio of Californian wines. Mason got Pokemon Scarlet for the switch and Audrey gets a Squishmallow.
Although they were going to exchange gifts after Thanksgiving, Tyson broke protocol for his jersey and Sasha’s gifts, so they could wear them to the Cowboys-Giants game.
Yes, he is in extreme debt now.
@imaginarybabies
bonus:
(he dropped an extra $180 for this)

I hope pjo s2 keeps, not only, Annabeth's relationship with Tyson but also the siren scene. The first part because, even though Annabeth was wrong and heavily flawed in her treatment of Tyson, it allowed her to grow and for readers to see things about her life that, before, we didn't. The show has the opportunity to show us flashbacks here and there, and we know she's protective over Thalia so it would make sense for her to be on the fence about Tyson. For the siren scene, I'm a little unsure about it because with the show rushing her relationship with her mother, I wonder if she'll still be added or just be edited out from it entirely. I hope her dad would still be there because one of her desires was to reunite with him and Luke, who the show tells us (last minute kind of) that Annabeth cares for him, so I hope he's added as well. It doesn't have to be exactly like the books, not saying that, but incorporating it could be so impactful. Pjo show I am holding on to hope!

If I read one more “annabeth is toxic” analysis where they leave out the part where Percy laughed after the judo flip and where they subtly make Percy out to be some weak and submissive victim while they’re at it I’m going to scream
