Zolu and the OPLA Soundtrack

I've been thinking about this since the soundtrack came out, and I feel like it needs to be talked about. Full disclosure, I am not a musician, or trained in music. I just have a decent ear. The OPLA soundtrack is amazing! They put so much work into it, it's got character themes and motifs, for the straw hats as well as the villains! This creates great moments where you can hear the villains and straw hats being mixed and competing with each other. A good example of what I'm talking is "Shriek and Ori" from Ori and the Will of the Wisps. This creates great storytelling through music opportunities, like in the "Zoro vs Mihawk" song on the ost, you can hear Zoro's theme, but the whole thing is using Mihawk's instruments, showing how overwhelmed and out of depth he is.

Now, let's talk about Zoro and Luffy. Specifically, we're going to be talking about "Gum Gum Bell". So Zoro's theme has two parts to it. The sad slow bit you hear in tracks like "Wado Ichimonji", and the fast strings you hear in combat, heard here in "Gum Gum Bell" at 4:09. Luffy has triumphant slow trumpets playing over a faster backing track, heard here at 10:35. Luffy in general is usually signified by trumpets and the occasional hurdy gurdy, while Zoro has Japanese and asian instruments. So the thing that is beautiful, is that their themes have been designed not only to be played together, but to be mixed together, layered on top. At 9:04, the end of Zoros fight, oh, that's Zoros strings, but whose trumpets are those? Oh my, those are Luffy's trumpets! And, what's this? At 10:04, where the fight against Kuro is turning in Luffy's favor, what is that fast melody being played under Luffy's brass. Well, I'll be, while different instruments, that sure does sound like Zoro's theme. Is Zoro brought up or appear on screen, or vice versa? No. Their just there, their themes intertwined and backing each other up, symbolizing how their intertwined in mind body, and soul, and how their dreams are intertwined together, and their themes fit together to show how they fit together, and they're soulmates and-

"They're mugs. They look fine."

"But this one's part of the dish set, and that one's not, and this one's sentimental so it really needs a better spot -"

"You're fussing," Ed interrupted gently.

"I'm not fussing!" Stede actually stomped his foot, turning to glare at Ed. "Forgive me for wanting our home to look nice! Edward!"

"Aww, sweet," Ed sighed, reaching out, smiling in relief when Stede automatically let himself lean into Ed's touch. "Is this because the kids are coming this weekend?"

"Everything needs to be perfect," Stede groaned, allowing his head to fall onto Ed's shoulder.

"Stede, babe, love of my life," Ed said, as gently as possible, "the kids are not going to care about the presentation of our mugs. Besides, we drink out of these, so it's not like the order's going to stay the same anyway, because we're gonna be using them and putting them back in, right?"

"I guess," Stede said, raising his head, pouting so impressively that Ed just had to kiss his lower lip. "I'm sorry, Ed, I know this is stupid, I don't know how you put up with me -"

"Not like it's hard. I think it's cute when you're fussy."

Stede's pout promptly transformed into a bitchy little huff. "I'm not fussy."

"Uh-huh. Not at all. Not my fussy little cheesepuff."

"What kind of pet name is that?" Stede snorted, finally giving Ed a proper smile. "You're lucky I don't tease you for the way you whine when we have to stop cuddling. My snuggly little teddy bear."

Ed pretended to let his face fall in mock horror. "Aww, you bastard, you're not playing fair."

Stede laughed, kissing Ed's cheek. "C'mon, now, Ed. Don't fuss."

I was reading a Robin x beast Boy fanfic because I recently found out I actually really like the ship cause it's kind of adorable but anyway off topic

Garfield Logan or beast Boy has frequent nightmares due to this he has insomnia The little time he does get sleep it's constantly plagued with images of the past and anxieties of the future in these bouts of nightmarish fever he shifts into any animal to defend himself within the dream but it happens in real life and he finds himself swinging at the walls of his room in the Titan Tower and every time he wakes up he sees the scratches and thinks about how it would worry the team so he finds himself repairing the drywall with spackle in the sometimes late night or maybe even early light of the morning but the drywall looks out of place so he paints the wall over, covers it in murals of twisting vines and pretty flowers and all kinds of things some are sloppy and some are elegant but it fits his personality perfectly so whenever there's a new doodle on his walls it means there is a new scratch that has been repaired not that the team knows that. So from his team's point of view he just really likes art and has a knack for painting but from his point of view it's hastily covering up secrets so he can keep the fragile sense of calm in the tower

And wow you guys I did not mean to be so wax poetic about this shit this was supposed to be a simple little headcanon it was not it is full of trauma

I started watching Kimi ni Todoke again, so I can catch up before starting the new season. I'm only like 17 minutes into the first episode and I'm already crying over how wholesome and sweet they are to each other.

Best romance ever! I don't ever want to hear that romance needs contrived drama and toxicity to be interesting. All I need is two people getting to know each other, and being nice to each other the whole time.

One last look in the mirror—swoop the hair, readjust ear cuff—and then I’m flying out of my room and through the front door. Miraculously, Cole isn’t outside yet which gives me a chance to catch my breath and settle into my body. Reservation isn’t until 7:30—we have plenty of time.

Shit, am I nervous?

The front door swings open, and Cole steps outside. All the air whooshes out of my lungs.

Half his hair is pulled up into a knot, the rest kisses his shoulders. He’s wearing a silky, short sleeve buttoned black shirt tucked into gray trousers that make his legs look like they go for miles. And the jacket. It’s a lightweight gold and brown houndstooth bomber jacket, with black and white striped trim.

Cole looks sexy and sporty and classy all at once.

“You look perfect,” I tell him. My voice is weirdly airy. I don’t sound like myself.

He smiles. “Cello clothes okay?”

I close the distance between us and clear my throat so my voice goes back down. “I mean, I want to wreck them later but, yes, they are more than okay for now.”

There’s laughter sparkling in his eyes, and Cole tugs me by my lapel to pull me even closer, kissing me between words. “You look” (kiss) “really good” (kiss) “too” (kiss).

Mm, I could kiss Cole all night (and a part of me wants to take him right back inside) but I also want to take him on a date. Eat good food, talk, laugh, flirt.

Curiosity overwhelms me. What is Cole like on a date?? I need to know.

“Car’s on the street,” I say. I intertwine his fingers with mine and head that direction.

“Where’re we going? Can you tell me yet?”

We arrive at my car, and I look over at Cole. He’s gloriously backlit by the sinking sun, a sweet cool breeze tugging at his hair. It’s a beautiful night—gold light and blue-violet sky and neon pink clouds—and probably one of the last summer nights before the seasons change.

I suddenly don’t want to spend the next two hours in a temperature-controlled restaurant with ridiculously pretentious food.

“Uh, one second,” I tell Cole. I motion for him to get in the car, and I dial the restaurant as I slip into the driver’s seat.

“Hey,” I say to the person who answers the phone. “I’ve got a reservation under Kai. We’re not gonna be able to make it.”

Cole sends me a look, waits for the call to end, and then asks, “Everything okay?”

I pull up directions to the night market Nya mentioned. It’s in a really cool part of town, where the arts district meets all the vintage shops.

“Totally good,” I say to Cole and flash him a grin. “Change of plans.”

“Yeah?”

“I’d rather be outside. You?”

“Kai, I don’t care what we do. I’m with you. The rest doesn’t matter.”

My heart gives off little sparks. “Such a romantic,” I tease.

“Oh, you have no idea,” Cole replies, his voice scorching the air, and I’m lightheaded again.

Is this what swooning feels like? Do I swoon now?
