Regarding castings for R&J in general, the strangest phenomenon for me is still Ethnic!Juliet and Anglo!Romeo…like. They’re both Italian. They’re both English characters. Juliet doesn’t inherently read more ethnic nor Romeo more Anglo. Hell, Romeo is explicitly an Italian name. Yet the general tendency is for a Anglo!Romeo and EthnicLite!Juliet. Where are my hot ethnic Romeos at????

Just a thought but I like to imagine/think that in another universe, they're kind of like "star-crossed lovers" and were supposed to be destined to have a tragic end together, but fate has a funny way of working things out, and they actually end up becoming the most unlikely but best of friends. Since they're technically no longer "lovers," they're not doomed or anything like that.

Then there's the fact that because they were supposed to be "lovers," some of the things they do can come off as romantic to those who are quick to assume (You can imagine the horror on their faces :0) In reality, they just really trust each other and have become each other's emotional support. They definitely give each other tough love: backhand compliments, sarcastic remarks, all of that good stuff. A normal conversation between them would probably go like:

"Get your 💩 together."

"You first."

But yeah, it's all out of love.

#first much ado adaptation i've seen where if this was my first/only exposure to it i would hate the play lmao #amy acker was imo the best part of the movie (her 'eat his heart in the marketplace' speech was pretty good) but also #one scene is not enough to save it and again i REALLY didn't buy the chemistry between ben/bea. those first scenes were rough #clark gregg was the only guy that looked like he wanted to be there but also i think he's way too nice to play leonato #he plays into the 'loving father' side and i don't buy him lashing out at hero at the wedding #much ado #ws #i think also. the reason i didn't warm to denisof's benedick is bc he just doesn't play his wit well at all #he just comes across as Dumb Jock. that is not my boy.#if you want to lean into his soldier side i feel like you have to play him as prickly. cynical. a little bit of an ego.#silly sometimes but also can be dangerous if he needs to be. ie. what dt did in the 2001 radio play version
