various and sundry artbook tidbits i found interesting (SPOILERS AHEAD FOR THE VEILGUARD ARTBOOK. obviously)

faction & location stuff:

a sketch page from the very early days exploring shape languages for factions like elves, dwarves, wardens, the necropolis, tevinter, and rivain, also includes concepts for the mages’ college and the ben-hassrath

early rivain concept arts have npcs with a similar armour patterning to duncan’s, suggesting it’s a mark of his rivaini heritage like i always thought!

the depiction of the ““creation story”” suggests elves were mimicking the bodies of dwarves when they formed their own, not humans like i think mythal says in game flashbacks, which would make more sense timeline wise

there’s concept art of the city of ventus, which i believe is of particular relevance to mercar players? it’s right on the border of arlathan forest, and surrounded by magical statues holding out raised hands forming a ward along the tree line to keep it from encroaching

the home base was going to be a lovable fixer-upper of a ship given to us by isabela, named the dumat. this didn’t fit the spy theme they were originally going for, so they tried really really hard to make it a submarine without feeling anachronistic by making it sort of sea monster shaped. there are a lot of cutaways and schematics. they were going to give it a mystery engine that you would get light fetch quests to feed random objects: “ten dried lavender flowers, five quail’s eggs, three brass belt buckles, etc.....” the submarine then turned into an undersea mansion on the back of some giant shambling sea creature you would never get a good look at

later on there were some funny takes on the lighthouse specifically, like bringing back the sea creature theme to put it on the back of an interdimensional veil whale, or having it be the true location of the black emporium with a collection of eluvians that xenon the antiquarian lets you use

there’s a tiny concept art for a “high-speed aravel chase” in a canyon like a western

tevinter gladiators are mentioned a couple times. we WEREEE going to get to see the minrathous proving grounds :( there’s also a dwarven embassy concept art somebody take me out back and shoot me

there are a lot of ghilan’nain creature designs that didn’t make it into the game which is a shame but i can see why they would have been resource heavy

the antiva concept arts are so gorgeous. a lot of it got through! and definitely the overall Vibe made it. at some point it seems to have been antiva city itself; they don’t call it treviso and they mention the circle of magi as a major landmark

“The entrance to the Necropolis is like an inverted Tower of Babel. They seek knowledge in the grave instead of heaven.” <- this just rules as a line

for arlathan: “To differentiate it from previous forest and jungle locations in Dragon Age, we went with an autumnal colour palette. It has the benefit to feeling ominously like the end.”

the veil jumpers have a “skull halla” symbol that “implies their willingness to risk death”. did that end up in the game?

“With each faction, we explored a range of aspirational fantasies. For the Wardens, this ranged from knights in shining armour to butal tanks to a Nietzche quote: ‘Beware that, when fighting monsters, you yourself do not become a monster.’”

there’s this concept among the warden armours for an insane orlesian noblewoman look with the winter palace morrigan corset and a piled high wig, but the skirts torn knee length and a serrated fan in hand. i’m kind of obsessed

“To bring more life to the world, we thought about what industries would keep the Anderfels afloat. We took the prominent Warden blue colour and envisioned an industry harvesting flowers, creating dye, and then weaving copious amounts of blue fabric.” this is probably where the flower quests in the hossberg wetlands started off conceptually? v cute

character stuff:

in completely different early versions of the game, solas had a “bad cop” right hand woman called reva

imshael the desire demon/choice spirit from the masked empire and inquisition was going to be a two-handed weapon warrior companion, and also sexualised now while in largely feminine form, which would have been a Choice. there is one art of him in masculine form, also sexy but still not showing as much skin as the feminine one

as i said, neve was going to be calpernia

taash was a rogue. (they’re still a light-armoured dual wielder so that checks out.) it seems like davrin was briefly a mage. at some points harding seems to have inherited bianca

saarbrak, another qunari companion, seems to have lastest the longest of the abandoned concepts. he’s the only non-canon one who got as far as having a place for him sketched into designs of the lighthouse: “saarbrak’s planning room”. mentions and sightings of what might be him are sporadic and i think you only see his name on that sketch, but i’m connecting it to the description “a potential qunari companion evolved from saarebas to dapper qunari spy, offering a deeper look into qunari culture”

the embroidery on harding’s clothes is how she passes the time while “waiting for days in a sniper perch” on missions. i just thought that was cute

I met @benzank a few years (just kidding, i looked at the date and it was in 2016. 8 does not equal "a few") ago at this Tumblr IRL thing in Boulder, CO. Old church turned into a performance venue/art gallery. I've never been in a space like it since then. Ben had these ridiculously gorgeous photos in a gallery - each one an interpretation of one of the tracks from Phantogram's album "Three."

The photos were projected on a big screen before Phantogram came on stage and performed this emotional and powerful set. Afterwards, we headed downstairs to see the physical photos displayed in these massive poster-sized formats. We were given these awesome photobooks and got them signed when we met Ben and Phantogram. It didn't feel like some weird fan-overload thing and was really just a nice relaxing environment that led to awesome conversation. The good ol' days I guess. I fell in love with this photo below especially - I still don't know why. Maybe it's because it was associated with "Same Old Blues" and those lyrics really hit my soul. I asked Ben if the photos were for sale because I felt compelled to get that piece in my home. Ben replied with something along the lines of, "What? No you don't have to buy it! Just wait over there for a few and I'll just give it to you when it's over." Seriously too kind. I've had this falling dude in the forest above my bed, I've moved more times than I can count since that 2016 show but this is always the first piece to go up in a new home. There's something about the way Ben gets these human figures to interact, and intersect with the environment that I just cannot ever get tired of seeing. It's always something that just make you stare and stare and stare, even 8 years later.

I wasn't going to reply to this as I'm not going to get in an argument, but it truly makes ME sick that you can be so hateful towards a teenage girl! A teenage girl who grew up abused and was morally taught to do all the wrong things for her mother's attention and affection. She didn't know any better. Furthermore, Mal exhausted every other option before turning to the love spell--she tried straight up getting the wand herself/with Jay. She tried befriending Jane for access to it. She tried asking Ben if she and her friends could be up front at the coronation. The love spell was the last option. Mal was running out of time when she knew she had to get that wand becuse her and her gangs lives depended on it! What, did you think Maleficent would just take them failing in her plan lightly? As well, Mal willingly and knowingly of the possible repercussions gave Ben the antidote, giving him back his choice. He could have left Mal and gotten back with Audrey at any time after his coronation. Mal gave him that option, knowing that she'd most likely die for it, if Ben sent her back to the Isle and she didn't have the wand.

Point One: While yes, you are correct that Audrey's feelings for Ben are never really explored. Flat out KISSING another guy not even a minute after Ben had broken up with her DOES NOT really scream genuine/deep feelings for him. Audrey did not even attempt to speak to Ben about what was going on before kissing Chad. Or even at any time afterwards. And please do not give me the "but it was up to Ben to talk to her!" line. Audrey is not an infant, she had a working mouth and legs to start the conversation. Do you not think that any girl who had been dating a guy for at least a year would want to talk to her boyfriend if he exhibits odd behaviour? Yet Audrey does not, she moves on, 30 seconds afterwards, showing she saw no true value in her and Ben's relationship. Mal is the one shown to have greater care for Ben, to the points of trying to save his life when she thinks he drowned even when doing so would put HER life in jeopardy, and "taking herself out of the picture" and going back to the Isle becuse she thought it would be best for him than Audrey is ever shown to.

Point Two: I never said I blamed Ben for the changes that happened to Mal. I merely wanted to point out that Mal put a lot of effort into trying to make things easier for Ben. Becuse she knew that he would more than likely get flack for her status as a VK. And on the night that she was supposed to get her 'pay off' (becoming Ben's Lady) it's seemingly taken away from her. Making all that effort be in vain. As to everyone being upset with Ben. Do remember that Ben planned the ENTIRE EVENT for Mal. So of course people are going to be upset and confused that Ben suddenly turns up with another girl. A girl that Auradon doesn't even know instead of Mal When, as said, the cotillion itself was planned around her. Judging by the reactions in D3 to her becoming future queen, people have grown to like Mal. At least more than they did Audrey, so yes, people are going to be upset that Ben 'blows Mal off' for seemingly no reason. No one but Mal. Ben and the other VK's there knew what had happened of the Isle. Or that Mal and Ben 'weren't together' any more. So as far as the kingdom knows this event's focus was Mal and then Ben seems to throw that out and demand that they pay attention to Uma with no explanation. Tell me that you wouldn't be upset in that type of situation.

Point Three: Mal did not make Uma think she was drowning. She WAS drowning! It is proven that she cannot swim in D1. She could have died, and she thought Uma left her to that. Do you really think Mal could let that go, living on the Isle? A place where they keep track of every slight made against them? With the expectations that were on her from Maleficent? Mal could not afford to be "soft." Furthermore, Uma gave as good as she got in the rivalry between them. It was Uma who brought uninvolved parties into the rivalry. You never saw Mal trying to kidnap/mess with/take away Harry from Uma. Uma may have been the original victim of the shrimp, yes, but she quickly lost 'victim' status with her actions afterwards. She went after Ben and turned up to cotillion deliberately and with malice just to hurt Mal.

In defence of Mal getting her 'karma' by the love spell in D2, and the people smirking, 'now she knows how it feels!'

It. Is. Different! 1 Unlike Audrey, Mal has genuine feelings for Ben at that point. (and think about the context of that. This is a girl who has never truly romantically loved someone in her life. And now that she has the person she let have her heart is getting taken away) 2. Mal has just come off months of putting herself through hell/Tartarus trying to be what she thought Ben needed. So that she wouldn't cause him issues with being a VK and on the night it was all supposed to pay off, Ben turns up with another girl. 3 Even if it's unknown to Ben and Uma Mal knows that that's not just any girl taking Ben. It's her cousin, her family that's just a deeper level of low/hurt!

So no, you cannot compare Mal and Audrey's feelings in that moment because the context of the two situations was not the same.

thoughts about the new rey movie and people’s reactions to the announcement

i was gonna reblog a post about this and just slide my opinion in the tags but it’s getting to be an essay so i think it warrants its own post

i’m not trying to attack anybody with this but this has been rampant since the announcement and i have thoughts:

i understand and share in the opinion that ben solo is a wasted character and that he (and TROS and the sequel trilogy in general) was severely mishandled, and i would not be sorry to see more of him. adam was one of the best things about this new trilogy. i was hardly a star wars fan until the day i went to see TFA on opening day. that experience was something i’ll never forget and i fell in love with kylo/ben and rey from the second they both appeared on screen during their respective intros. without them i don’t think i would enjoy SW the way i do now.

i’m so happy for daisy to have this new opportunity to continue rey’s story. She deserves it.

And before you chime in--yes, Ben deserves for his story to be continued, too. No one’s ever really gone, and all that. if he comes back i will be screaming on the way to the theaters with the rest of you.

but i have seen so many people state outright since the announcement that they refuse to watch the movie if ben isn’t coming back.

i understand that sentiment, i do--none of us want to get burned again TROS-style. we want to see the dyad together and alive and happy. we want lucasfilms to get a friggin grip and just--DO BETTER.

and remember, this is my opinion, but it rubs me the wrong way when people say they won’t watch the movie without ben (and i’ve seen it said over and over and over both here and on instagram) because it’s sort of implying that rey has no value without ben, like she is not interesting enough on her own.

now i don’t actually believe that’s what people mean when they say that (at least, not everybody) but that’s the feeling i get from it. i love rey and ben equally and so i’ll take any new content with them in it, even if they aren’t together. will it hurt? will it be bittersweet? yeah. but imagine if the new rey movie gets a really low turnout and then disney execs look at the numbers and go ‘hmm--let’s not do that again’ and then a new possible trilogy is cancelled or any chance we get of maybe a dyad reunion is also gone. bc we all know the mouse listens to money above all.

i love rey. i think she’s a great character who has just as much potential as ben and i can’t wait to see what she can do in a film where she’s top billing (until they throw in a mark hamill cameo because we all know he’ll be in it to some degree) but my point still stands. and daisy is a great actress who brought such depth to rey that i’m so excited to see her return and i can’t wait to see her as rey again.

do i still have a tiny bit of hope that it will be better this time and that ben will return? yes. i’m not gonna lie about it. this clown makeup is tattooed on. but it’s a cautious hope and i’m trying not to feed too much into it, because the reality is that it’s rey who’s back and i love her so i’m going to support her because i think she’s interesting and compelling on her own, just as she was in TFA before she ever met Kylo/Ben.
