My god. Imagine telling your son, your own child, to come take a job where is explicit purpose is to take a bullet for another person, for someone else’s son. Imagine bringing your 18 year old child into this situation where the risk of being shot to death is high. This is so intense.

I have no idea if this is something that Never Let Me Go is interested in dealing with, or if it’s just a hand-wavy thing to set the plot in motion. But my first thought upon hearing Palm say, "hello dad," was, holy fuck, he was recruited by his own father?!

the visual language of this scene between ben and neungdiao in episode 4 makes me absolutely feral. every single shot is divided by sharp vertical lines that act as jail cell bars—ben’s fear of his father versus his desire contrasting with neung’s sense of responsibility versus his fear—keeping each of them trapped and isolated inside a very uniquely queer kind of loneliness.

just as we see a thick rectangle around his chinese name 唯一 on both his necklace and the paper cutting from ben, neungdiao himself is trapped within a box.

neung asks ben to slow things down and get to know each other more, teasing him about dating but asking him to wait with the classic manipulative fake-smile that we’ve seen him wear before.

it absolutely kills me how ben’s hand is barely visible. neung is immobile and unresponsive like during their kiss in episode 3. he’s so lonely living in his box that he accepts ben’s advances, but he doesn’t reciprocate. he can’t. he just hasn’t accepted that yet.

his façade drops the second that ben leaves. the harshness of the background fades as neundiao’s attention is pulled back to palm:

the one whom he wishes would reach out and touch him instead.
